Talking Jesus: Missing Pieces and Real Purpose

John 4, Matthew 9, Colossians 4Society can only exist without God for so long before a critical mass of people longing for identity and purpose intersect with a critical mass of people who have found identity and purpose in a relationship with Christ. These intersections change the course of history.Matthew 9:35-38 (NIV) 35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” 4 Truths from Matthew 9 Crowds of people live without the shepherd covering of Jesus.A lack of Jesus covering results in harassment and helplessness.Uncovered crowds are ripe and ready for what Jesus offers.Jesus ready crowds need more Jesus talking people. People are missing pieces. Missing pieces is frustrating and defeating. A person can know something is missing without knowing what is missing. A person can know what's missing without knowing where to find what's missing. People can tell you that they… Are sad and depressedAre bound up and held backAre helpless to find a way forward Want to be free and favoredHere's the hope…People are missing pieces. Jesus is the missing piece. “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” Luke 4:18-19 (NIV)Jesus identifies Himself as…Good news to the poorFreedom for the prisoner & oppressedSight to the blindThe Lord's favorThe crowds might not know Jesus by name and reputation but they do know what's missing from their lives…HopeFreedomWholenessFavorFew Followers of Jesus would argue that we are living in a time of spiritual void yet too few perceive they have a personal role in this harvest opportunity. Jesus is looking to match this unprecedented harvest with an unprecedented number of Jesus talkers! There is a finite number of people who can talk Jesus to a crowd. There is an infinite number of people who can talk Jesus to a person. The key to embracing the role of an Everyday Evangelist is seeing the person apart from the crowd and believing that God is orchestrating an intersection. Divine Appointment: The divine “intersection” of a Jesus Talker and a person in the crowd. John 4:31-35 (NIV) 31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something. 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” 33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?” 34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Don't you have a saying, ‘It's still four months until harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. People are missing pieces. Missing pieces is frustrating and defeating. Jesus is the missing piece. Jesus' work is the missing piece to our Real Purpose. There is no way to oversell a fresh relationship with Jesus as the catalyst for our real purpose. There is a reason that many people are reluctant to fearful of talking Jesus – Satan doesn't want Jesus' work finished or His followers full. How do we live out our commission and call as Everyday Evangelists?Embrace talking Jesus is your Real Purpose. Focus on freshness. Ask God for divine appointments. Believe that people are more ready for Jesus than you realize. Trust the Holy Spirit in the encounterActs 4:13 (NIV) When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.Colossians 4:3-6 (NIV) 3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

John 15:18-27 Five things to understand here: 1 - As a Christian the world will hate you and reject you. The world doesn't accept or tolerate the Christian lifestyle or values. The world rejected Jesus so much that He was crucified on a cross. 2 - Satan is the ruler of this world and loves those who are of this world. Satan hates God. Satan hates Jesus. Satan hates Christians. 3 - Satan is no match for the Love of Jesus. Because of the Love of Jesus Satan is defeated. 4 - Jesus chose you “out of the world”. Jesus pursued you and brought you out of the darkness of the world. Jesus rescued you from the fires of Hell and brought you to a redeeming light. Jesus loves you and offered you grace through the forgiveness of your sins by His death on the cross. 5 - The world (and Satan who is the ruler of the world) will hate you because you belong to Christ Jesus through the saving power of His blood shed for you for Salvation into Eternal Life.

Therefore, we trust God's sovereign authority. (Spirit leads)When his flesh was weak. Therefore, we deny ourselves and rest in his power. (Weakness)Unique yet universal. Therefore, we rest in his faithfulness. He resisted with the word of God. Therefore, we believe his word.Tough but temporary testing. Therefore, we embrace the season of testing.Opening:In the Lord of the rings trilogy Frodo Baggins has to deal with the temptation that comes whenever he put on the ring of invisibility or the ring of power. Because with that power he could envision himself doing all kinds of things. That power was corrupting him over time and tempting him to change. It is a reminder of how the enemy tempts us through power. We're all tempted every day via flash, by the world views were surrounded by, and by the enemy himself. Temptation itself is not evil. Being tempted is part of the test. Sin comes when we give into temptation.Last week we said sin has consequences. Two weeks ago we said repentance and faith removes the penalty of sin. This week we'll deal with the enemy, the flesh and the world tempting us to sin.Discussion questions for group and personal study:Note: We encourage you to use our sermons and discussion questions to gather with some friends and talk about the passage together. If not, explain why.2. List some things that distract us from seeing the spiritual battles all around us. What are some specific ways we can battle our ignorance and apathy toward spiritual warfare?3. Which sins are especially prevalent in our culture today?4. Explain how Jesus' triumph through temptation is both our example and the basis for our own victory in temptation. What is the danger if we only see Jesus as our example?5. How would you answer the following question: "If Jesus was fully God, then how can His victory over temptation help a weak and sinful person like me?"6. Of Satan's three temptations in this passage, which one do you struggle with the most? What promise from Scripture might help you battle that temptation?7. Explain the following statement: Jesus triumphed where Adam and Israel failed.8. What attributes of God strengthen you during temptation?9. How do Satan's temptations seek to undermine the purpose of the cross?10. How does the promise of eternal life and the believer's future reign with Christ affect your everyday battle with sin?Scripture:“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'” Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.”‭‭Matthew‬ ‭4:1-11‬ ‭NIV‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/111/mat.4.1-11.NIVOpening:We all struggle with temptations. (Examples in my life??)God helps us when we are being tempted (Hebrews 2:18)God sympathizes with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15)So we're looking at Jesus'IdentityExampleOutline:5 Characteristics of Jesus' temptations so we can become resistors of temptationJesus' temptations were…I. God-ordained but not God-inflicted. Therefore, we trust his sovereign authority.A. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness (God-ordained) to be tempted/tested by the devil (not God-inflicted).B. Jesus is bothTested: Is he really the true Son of God? Will he hold fast to God's plan of salvation?Tempted: To exalt himselfTo avoid the pain and suffering of the crossTo bow to Satan's ruleC. Lesson: “If you want to follow Jesus, know that the road to Heaven is not paved with gold and lined with daisies. Jesus who was loved by God was sent into the wilderness to be tested. If you are his follower, you can expect the same.” —DSO“Perhaps you have heard the story of a congressman from Tennessee who, after serving his first term in Washington, was seeking reelection. He returned to his home state of Tennessee to seek support for reelection, and in those efforts he went to the home of a wealthy farmer who had been a key supporter in his first election. The congressman said to the farmer, “I'm running for a second term. Will you support me again?” The farmer shook his head no and said, “No, I'm sorry, Mr. Crockett. I'm not going to support you again.” He continued, “Do you remember what happened last year when there was a fire in Washington that displaced people from their home? You voted to give the displaced people the money they needed to build a new house. You didn't take that money from your own pocket, but you voted to take it from mine.” In other words, the money distributed by the congressman had not been his to give.”Excerpt From Matthew - An Expositional Commentary, R.C. SproulII. When his flesh was weak. Therefore, we deny ourselves and rest in his power.A. Wilderness/desert, no shelter, hostile nature, extreme weather, no creature comforts.B. Solitude - alone, no companionship.C. No food.D. “We should be prepared to fight when we are most weak.” —DSOOr think about Adam and Eve. Read what James Montgomery Boice says about them in contrast to Jesus:“Adam and Eve were in paradise; Jesus was in the vast, desolate wilderness of Judah. Adam and Eve were physically content and satisfied. They werefree to eat from any of the trees of the garden, save the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; Jesus was hungry, having fasted for forty days and forty nights. Adam and Eve were together. They had each other for company and mutual support; Jesus was alone. Yet Adam and Eve rapidly succumbed to Satan's wiles, carrying the entire human race into sin, misery, destruction, and both physical and spiritual death, while Jesus stood firm as the Savior who was to bring life and salvation to the race. What Adam didn't do, Jesus did. P. 85III. Unique yet universal. Therefore, we rest in his faithfulness.A. Unique temptation—because he is uniqueRemember who he is: (Matt 3:17; Psalm 2; Isaiah 42) Son of God Suffering ServantOf course, this is why Satan's point of attack centers on Questioning his identity, andChallenging him to take the crown without the cross.B. Universal temptations—Aren't we all tempted to grab the crown without the cross? To think that the physical > spiritual?Seek out the gospel through gimmicks, entertainment, and worldly means—our own version of turning stones to bread?By the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life. (1 John 2:16)From holy reliance on the Father to an unholy independence? The tempter tempts him to take the shortcut to glory by bypassing Gethsemane and Golgotha. That's what all these temptations are about.Just look at the least obvious—verses 3, 4. Here it's as if Satan says,“Look, Jesus, you're hungry. The whole world is hungry. If you can turn these stones into bread, which I know you can- because you're God's Son!—then feed yourself, and feed the world. Use your power for what people most need and want—their bellies to be filled—and then watch the whole world"run after you like sheep, grateful and obedient." You will have the world literally eating from your hand. Give people what they really want—not the Word of God but food from God.” -Douglas Sean O'Donnell, p. 87IV. Resisted with the word of God. Therefore, we believe in his word.A. While we could go to the sword analogy (Eph 6:17) as the word of God, DSO suggests we go to the shield analogy instead: The shield of faith.B. Because we acknowledge God's word is powerful. But do we really believe it? Do we live by “every word” of God?C. The shield of faith is more defensive by nature. It extinguishes the fiery darts of the enemy. Not darts tempting towards obvious evil but good things that can trip us up as well.Romans 10:17 Faith comes from hearing…D. Questions to considerDo you know the word of God? It's content?Do you know how to interpret it correctly?Do you trust what God has said and written?V. Tough but temporary. (10-11) Therefore, we embrace the season of testing.A. James 4:7B. 1 Cor 10:13 makes it clear, there's no temptation that isNot common to everyone,Not beyond your ability to resist with our Lord's help (Heb 2:18),From which God does not provide a way of escape—if you say “NO!” he will go.C. “Our God only allows Satan to tempt us for our good, to try and test and refine our faith. Conclusion:Satan cannot break jesus because…He rests in his identityHe praysHe fastsHe's following the Holy SpiritHe knows the word of God He knows the futureHe speaks the word aloud in the face of the enemy believing it's powerLet's do this and lead others to do the same!PrayMy Other notes:Resist seems a key action (requires faith)Fasting seems a key strategy or power source (prayer = faith in action)Scripture seems a key weapon (requires faith) (truth)“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”‭‭James‬ ‭4:7‬ ‭NIV‬‬https://james.bible/james-4-7“Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭5:9‬ ‭NIV‬‬https://1peter.bible/1-peter-5-9Verse 1“Then” - follows his baptism where he's affronted in his character and identity as the Son of God.“led” - Jesus followed, didn't just lead.“By the Spirit” - Holy Spirit/Spit of God is who Jesus followed modeling this perfectly for us.“Into the wilderness” - the most uncomfortable place to be is away from shelter, food, family, and friends. Especially for an extended length of time.“To be tempted” - This is why the Holy Spirit led him there. This is the Spirit testing and preparing Jesus for what is to come.“By the devil” - the Tempter, the Accuser; Father of lies.Verse 2“40” - A significant Bible number—combination of 4, earthly things and 10, divine perfection. A long time to not eat! No wonder he was hungry! Also, the number of years Israel wandered in the desert with Moses being tempted, tested and led by the Spirit of God.Verse 3“the Tempter” - Satan, the devil; what he does.“Came to him” - Has Jesus in his crosshairs.“‘If you are the son of God'” “If” is his way of introducing doubt. Satan knows exactly who Jesus is.“Son of God” - who Jesus Christ is.“Tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus could have done this. He likely was tempted as a man. Yet he did not give in.Verse 4He resisted this temptation by fasting, praying, and recalling scripture and quoting it to Satan.“Answered” - Jesus dialogues with Satan, whom he knows well.“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” LIfe is spiritual as well as physical. God's word feeds our soul and faith even as food feeds our body. We need both. And God still speaks (through) his word.Verse 5“Took” - Jesus willingly follows Satan to the highest point on the temple; could have been literally or just visually. This would have also been the highest point in Jerusalem overlooking the city and the region.Verse 6“If” - once again, Stan questions/raises doubts to tempt Jesus to doubt his own identity.“Throw yourself down” - i.e. test. Psalm 91:11-12 by jumping so the angels will rescue you. But to what end? To prove to himself he's really Son of God? To prove to Satan? The world?“He will command his angels concerning you…” - The Lord protects his son when he wants to…but not before and on the cross.Verse 7“It is also written” - more scripture to combat temptation.“Don't put the Lord your God to the test.” There's a only one time in scripture where God says test me and this isn't it.Verse 8“Again” - third time“Took him to a very high mountain” - another epic view. This time of the entire world. “Showed him all the kingdoms of the world.” To tempt him to rescue the world without having to go to the cross.Verse 9“All this I will give you…if you will bow down and worship me.” - Because Satan has this authority right now. Price? Allegiance and worship of Satan. This is what Satan ultimately wants.Jesus responds with scripture once again to resist temptation powerfully as his leaning on the same authority that gave Satan temporary authority over the world.“Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” - Ourallegiance is to the Lrod God alone. Even the Son of God bows to him while in the flesh. He submits to him as well (the cross; incarnation)Verse 10“The devil left him“- Satan cannot break jesus because…He rests in his identityHe praysHe fastsHe's following the Holy SpiritHe knows the word of God He knows the futureHe speaks the word aloud in the face of the enemy believing it's powerVerse 11“Angels came and attended him” - His physical needs are eventually met.Notes from RC Sproul's commentaryTemptations rise from within.“When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”‭‭James‬ ‭1:13-15‬ ‭NIV‬‬Therefore, God isn't tempting Jesus—Satan is.God led Jesus there knowing that would happen and using it to test him.Adam & Eve failed a similar test but under much different conditions:They were in paradise (Garden of Eden) vs. the wilderness/desert that Jesus was in.They had unlimited food around them vs. Jesus fasting for 40 days and nights. They had each other (plus the Father each night) vs. Jesus being all alone.Yet, same issues is at stake: The serpent came to Adam & Eve with a question: “Has God really said…?”In the wilderness, Satan suggested three times, “If…”The Devil's point of attack is the same in both cases—the trustworthiness of God's word. Adam and Eve did not believe God's word. Jesus did. RCSJesus submitted to baptism in part to identify with his people.Maybe a bigger miracle is Jesus' sinless life. If he's not sinless, then he's not an acceptable sacrifice. No cross, no salvation. So all that is on the line here in the wilderness.Could Jesus have sinned?Divinely speaking, no.Humanly speaking, yes. But he didn't. As a man, Jesus had the ability to sin, or he'd not have been truly human nor truly tempted. It would have all been a scam.Satan used a simple desire to satisfy a legitimate need to tempt Jesus.Satan plants the suggestion that if Jesus really was the son of God, he'd not have to endure suffering but use divine authority to eat.“It is written” is Jewish shorthand for the words of God or scripture.Life requires more than physical food. We need bread plus spiritual food. What else? “Every word” not just some words of God.“Jesus' meat and drink was to do the will of the Father. He had a zeal that consumed him.”“The word that came from the Father was more important to him that his bread.”“Let's see if the Bible is true. Jump and see if the angels catch you.”Hermeneutics - laws/rules that govern the interpretation of scripture. First principle: the “analogy of faith” = scripture Has it's own interpreter. That is we interpret scripture with scripture. God never speaks a lie.God's word is coherent and unified.God never contradicts himself. Therefore, what he says in Judges can never contradict what he says in Ephesians. Therefore, if we set one part of scripture against another we violate this first principle of bible interpretation. This is exactly what Satan is doing.BQ: Have you ever considered your personal point of vulnerability if Satan were to come to you with a test? What would he put in front of you?Glory?A kingdom? (A company, an organization, an institution)Riches?Power? He offered all of these things to Jesus in exchange for one thing—worship.Jesus already knew he was getting all of that. But Satan was tempting him to get it with a shortcut—without the cross.BQ: How do you respond to Satan's temptations when you're alone and no one can see you?“Get our of here, Satan!”Notes from Warren Wiersbe's commentaryTemptation 1: Satan appealed to the body; the flesh.Satan suggests that if Christ were God's son, he wouldn't let Jesus stay hungry as if God were holding out on him. (Does God really love you? Answer, see Matt 3:17)God tests us in ordinary things in life.Word > BreadTemptation 2: Satan appealed to Jesus proving himself.Satan leaves out “in all your ways” (Psalm 91:11-12) when quoting this Psalm.Temptation s3: Satan appealed to Jesus with an “easier way” to become king. Appeal to by-pass the cross and suffering.Kingdom already promised to Jesus (Ps 2:6-9)Kingdom received after dying on the cross.“Whatever we worship (what we order our lives around) is the god we serve.” -WWWe cannot serve both God and god. Matt 6:24Says Jesus was tested so that every creature would know that Jesus Christ conquerors. Jesus exposed Satan's tactics and defeated him.We have victory because he was victorious here and ultimately at the cross.Adam & Eve Jesus vs SatanGarden of Eden Wilderness/DesertPlenty of food, drink FastingShade, shelter No shelter from the weatherCompanionship AloneSuggestion 1: Satan always suggesting that God is depriving you of what's good (is God really good; does he really love you?); he must not love us!Suggestion 2: Use your divine power to meet your own needs and those around you.“When we put our physical needs ahead of our spiritual needs, we sin.” -WW“Jesus could have turned the stones into bread, but he would have been exercising his powers independently of the Father; and he came to obey the Father.” -WWGod's word IS our food. John 4:32-34Third temptation: Shortcut to the kingdom.“Satan has always wanted worship, because Satan has always wanted to be God.” -WW“Worshipping the creature instead of the Creator is the lie that rules our world today.” -WW“If we want to share in the glory, we must also share in the suffering.” (1 Peter 5:10)No cross—no crown“Whatever we worship, we will serve.”Worship and service go together.Jesus calls others to obey after he obeyed.References/Bibliography:“Preaching the Word” Commentary, Douglas Sean O'Donnell, Edited by Kent Hughes“Matthew” by RC Sproul“The Bible Knowledge Commentary” by Walvoord, Zuck (BKC)“The Bible Exposition Commentary” by Warren Wiersbe (BEC)“Exalting Jesus in Matthew” by David Platt (CCE)Outline Bible, D WillmingtonNIV Study Bible (NIVSB)ESV Study BibleESV Gospel Transformation Bible (GTB)

George Orwell once said, "There are some ideas so stupid that only intellectuals believe them." I am not an intellectual and it's my belief that you are not one either. So when we are confronted with a new idea we need to evaluate them. We need to see if they have merit, see if they are true or false. We finished the first section of our series How to Survive in a Post-Christian World. We learned that God has appointed our leaders and for that reason, we are to subject ourselves to their leadership except when they ask us to disobey God. We learned that we are to love our neighbors even when they hate us and persecute us. And we learned that in these last days we need to wake up, put off the deeds of darkness, and put on the armor of light. Today we will begin our new section with a question. It is a True or False question. I will ask this question in just a moment, but I want you to refrain from shouting out your answer. I want you to keep your answer to the question to yourself. And a little later we will answer it aloud. Here is the question: True or False – All roads that lead to God are good. Today the one thing you will learn is how to answer that question and any other question that may come your way. Let’s pray Test the Spirits Turn in your Bible to 1 John 4:1-3. I opened this lesson with a question, is this a true or false statement – All roads that lead to God are good. A little later we will answer that question. But first we have to cover some ground. We need to learn the fundamentals on how to know whether something is true or false. Follow along as I read from 1 John 4:1-3 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world. The idea of “testing” or “trying” the spirits is found elsewhere in the Bible. Leave a finger at 1 John 4 but turn to 1 Thessalonians 5:20:22 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil. I want to take 1 John and 1 Thessalonians and mash the two passages together. In 1 Thessalonians we are told to “Test all things.” In 1 John we are told to “test the spirits.” Let’s start with “the spirits” of 1 John. We know that the Holy Spirit is God. John just mentioned the Holy Spirit in the last verse of chapter three. So we know of the Holy Spirit, but this passage tells us that there are even more spirits in this world and we must test them. What does it mean to test? It means to make a critical examination of something; to determine the genuineness of something; to really examine it. The Greek word for test is used for metallurgy. It is the test that a goldsmith would use to test the purity of gold. We should never take something at face value. We should evaluate it. We should make sure it is genuine. We should check its purity. We make these evaluations 1,000s of times per day. Every time we sit on a chair we determine whether or not it will hold. When we drive our cars down the road or over a bridge the mind evaluates whether or not it will hold. These tests are based on past experience. It has held before. It will hold this time. In 1994, here in Westminster, Robert Knight took a dinner break from his job at the sewer treatment plant, jumped in his car, and drove toward town to get some food. It was 2 am. As he drove along route 31, all of a sudden the road was no longer there and Robert in his van plunged into a sinkhole that measured 45 feet wide and 18 feet deep. He died a few hours later in shock trauma. We ask ourselves, why did Robert drive route 31 if there was a possibility that a sinkhole might swallow him up? Why didn’t he take another road? The reason he drove on that road without any fear is that the road had never swallowed him up before or anyone else for that matter. He made an evaluation based on past experiences. We do this all the time. Faith is an evaluation based on past experiences. We know that God will do such in such because He has always done so in the past. Past experiences or faith is one test but there are others. Another test is the doctrine of Christ. The First Test – Jesus John is not worrying about sinkholes or even matters that we can evaluate with past experience. John is focused on things pertaining to Jesus, to spiritual matters. How can we determine if a religious idea, a religious person, or a religious institution is genuine? One way is to see what they say about Jesus. 1 John is an early response to an early version of Gnosticism. Gnosticism believed that Jesus was not God and that Jesus was spirit. Gnostics believed that Jesus did not have a body. Gnostics believe that all things physical are bad and all things spiritual are good. In the time of 1 John they believed that Jesus was an emanation, a spirit, and did not have a body. What does that wrong thinking do to the crucifixion? What does it do to the resurrection? Look back at 1 John 4:1-3 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. You can see in verses 2 and 3 John’s response to the Gnostics. Something is false if it believes Jesus did not come in the flesh. Jesus is God incarnate. Jesus came to this earth in full humanity The Holy Spirit (v2) testifies to the true nature of God the Son. Satan and false prophets distort the nature of Jesus. Satan is a liar and a murderer. His false prophets are the same. (John 8:44) He wants to keep you from salvation. He wants to kill you spiritually forever. There are other things about Jesus you must believe. They too can be used to test an idea, person, or institution. Jesus is God the Son. Jesus died on the cross for the sins of the world. Jesus rose again bodily on the 3rd day Salvation is only through Jesus Satan and his false prophets want to keep you from truly understanding and believing on Jesus because Jesus is God and salvation only comes through Jesus. You can test a spirit or everything by what they believe concerning Jesus. Here is a question you can ask when you are uncertain about someone’s faith or ideas: Who is Jesus to you? The Word                    In a few minutes, we will answer our True or False question. Don’t shout it out. Keep your answer quiet. I will give you an opportunity to share in a bit. But remember the question is: True or False – All roads that lead to God are good. There is a second test that we need to use when we are confronted by something. It is the Word test. We have been looking at 1 John 4 and also considering 1 Thessalonians 5:20-22 In both passages, prophecy is mentioned. In 1 Thessalonians Paul tells us not to despise prophecies. In 1 John, John warns us about false prophets. What does Paul mean in 1 Thessalonians when he tells us not to despise prophecies? The word “prophecies” can mean the spoken revelation from God. That’s the way I always imagine prophecies. Some longhaired, crazy-eyed prophet standing up on a hill shouting out, “Thus saith the LORD!!!” But the word prophecies can mean the written word of God. In fact, the idea of the written word is meant more often than spoken. An example is found in 2 Peter 1:19-21 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. Paul is saying that when the Word is preached, taught, or read we are to take it seriously. We must not reject it. We must receive it. Do not despise the Word. Example of the Word Test A perfect example of this can be found in Acts 17:10-12. If you have walked with Christ for any amount of time you are familiar with the story of the Bereans. Christians admire the Bereans. Many churches bear their name – Berean Bible Church, Berean Baptist Church.... Why so? Let’s read and find out. Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men. The Bereans did not take what Paul said at face value. They tested his words and they tested him. They did so by comparing him and his words to Scripture. Why did they do this? It was their nature. It was who they were as a synagogue. They were people of the Word. They studied it with eagerness. So it was natural for them to use the Word as a tool to test whether or not something was true. Pray to God that we too would be a church of the Word. The Word of God is what we should use to test everything. Let’s go back to our question. I will ask it again and now you will give me your answer. Don’t shout it out. Rather let’s do a show of hands. If you believe it is True when I say “All roads that lead to God are good.” Then raise your hand. If you believe it is False when I say the same raise your hands. The answer is False. Why? We want to be like the Bereans. What verse or passage should we use to test this question? John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. I think it’s time for a pop quiz. I gave you time to think about your answer to the True or False question. How here comes one and I will not give you any time to think about it. But I will help you with this hint. Hint: You can find a passage to help you evaluate this idea in the Book of Genesis. There, I have eliminated 65 other Bible books. Here is the idea to evaluate. On Thursday, February 25, 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives Passed the Equality Act. The act is not yet law because it has to pass the Senate. But if it does, many things in the US will change. Here is one change that we can test. If Equality Act passes the Senate, we will no longer be allowed to identify people by biological gender. No longer will there be males or females, boys or girls. What is a Bible passage, found in the book of Genesis, that will help you test this new idea? Genesis 1:27 and 5:2 If you would like to read more about the impact the Equity Act can have on our society, Mary Rice Hasson wrote an opinion piece for Newsweek Magazine titled The Equity Act and the End of Females.  https://www.newsweek.com/equality-act-end-females-opinion-1571432 Also, The Heritage Foundation has an article The Equity Act – How Could Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Laws Affect You? https://www.heritage.org/gender/heritage-explains/the-equality-act Remember, don’t despise or dismiss or reject God’s Word. Read it with eagerness. God is using it to teach you. And you can use the Word to test everything. Conclusion The Apostle John warned about false prophets. False prophets are everywhere. They are writing books. They are on TV and radio. They are on social media. And they even occupy the halls of government. They use all forms of media – print, broadcast, and the internet. Every day they feed you with their false doctrine and corrupt ideas. How can you test these people, test their ideas, and test their organizations? Find out what they think about Jesus. Test them using the Bible. Let us pray that you and this church will eagerly study God’s Word so that we will not fall to Satan’s lies.

Continuing with Jesus’ confrontation with the Jews, He makes it clear that religious privilege does not guarantee a right attitude toward the things of God. Heaven will never be gained by pedigree. Interestingly, the Jews were seeking to kill the very one that their “father,” Abraham, was looking forward to. Jesus told them they had the devil as their father, and not wanting to hear the truth, they called Jesus Satan. Those who are truly God’s children will honor the Son, and the Jews weren’t willing to do that. Finally, Jesus claimed to be God and the Jews blew their collective gasket.

Easter 2020 - God is Love Day 14. Who is this Jesus? What was the purpose of the Messiah? (Mark 10:45) Jesus’ mission was to be the Servant of the Lord, and therefore, the saviour of the world as God’s Son (John 3v16). His purpose as the Messiah was neither that He be served nor that He will lead a political overthrow of the Roman government as some had hoped. Rather, His purpose as the Messiah was to be God’s servant and give a message of hope for the spiritually poor and spiritually oppressed people. Follow who Jesus is When Jesus rebuked Peter, he was also telling off the other disciples (Mark 8:33). They did not yet understand how suffering and glory were in relationship with each other. However by the time Peter had written 1 Peter, he had correlated the two as being in harmony with each other. (1 Peter 1:6-8, 1 Peter 4:13-5:10). Some Jewish leaders taught of 2 Messiahs – one to suffer and one who would reign (1 Peter 1:10-12). There is a price to pay for true followers of Jesus Christ. We must surrender completely to him. We must identify with him in his suffering and death. We must follow him obediently, wherever he leads. What is the reward for the true disciple of Jesus? Satan promises glory now, but in the end suffering comes. God promises suffering now, but the suffering turns to glory. We are to confess Him As Lord! Spiritually, at this time, the disciples were still blind to who Jesus was, just as the man who was physically blind. Our confession of Jesus is a matter of life and death (1 John 4:1-3). Confession of Jesus as Lord is necessary for salvation (1 Corinthians 12:1-3), when that confession is from the heart (Romans 10:9-10). Christians are called to follow Jesus, to take up their cross and this could mean nothing less than being ready to suffer and die for Jesus. If we are ashamed of him on earth, he will be ashamed of us when the end of the world has come. He will reward those deserving the reward, and deny those who deny him. Who do you say this Jesus is?   Job 1:20-21 “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” Let’s have a quick recap of what led to this moment from Job. To set the scene: Job was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. He had seven sons and three daughters, and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East. Read Job1:13-18. Out of this context – Job praised the Lord. Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head – expression of grief and mourningPsalm 8:2 Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.Psm22:23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!...Where do we get this attitude and the intention to praise the Lord? ‘From you comes the theme of my praise’ (Psalm 22:25). The theme of our praise come from knowing our God. The true reality is…..there is always something to praise God for. There is never a time that God cannot be praised Life may not always be kind to us…Story of Job shows us that. Loss in our life might not just be down to a bad choice or decision or as some call it ‘bad luck’, or of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It might well be the Devil. Satan wanted to put Job to the test. There will be times when we are tested because of Spiritual Warfare. I can’t begin to understand what it would be like to lose vast wealth to thieves. I can’t begin to understand what it would be like for what could seem like an ‘act of God’ to rob me of the most precious material things in my life and servants and still more wealth be lost. I can’t begin to understand what it would be like to lose 7 sons and 3 daughters. But I can understand what it’s like to experience loss of various kinds. And I do know that at some of the significant times of loss in my life the evil one has used it as an opportunity to try and turn me against God. That little whispering voice in my ear. Is God really your provider? Look how easy life is for that non-Christian…easier than yours. God’s not blessing you…you’ve got nothing compared to others. If God loves you….why is this happening to you and not to them. The best example is the temptation of Jesus. Matt 4:1-11. In simple terms-Jesus tempted re: God provision for his Daily bread – Practical Provision for daily living-God provision for Physical wellbeing – God’s provision for position/status/wealth in this life.Psalm 137:1-6 Israel had hung up their instruments of worship and praise. What might God do through their praise? Acts 16:25  At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. Imagine if by the Rivers of Babylon there were prayers and singing to God. What might have happened?!Psalm 8:2 Through praise… A stronghold can be established against enemies. A stronghold is a place…That is fortified and that can be easily defended. A stronghold can be…A place where a group or activity or set of opinions is concentrated. For us to have a spiritual stronghold against our enemies we are to know God personally. We are to recognize the permanent character of our God. Know who He is and what He has done in our hearts and minds. And to praise Him.A long time ago I discovered something very powerful about praise. I’m sure you all have but I’ll share this anyway. It’s very difficult for me to be praising God and to actively and willingly sin.If I started to praise the Lord with my heart and mind….Temptation would more often than not- disperse – flee away….My mind and heart would go to a different place. They are no longer focused on the temptation but now focused on God. Jas_1:14 ‘But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.’… Sometimes if may be a direct attack of Satan as in the case of Job….Satan was allowed to touch his life. As in the case of Jesus…Satan was allowed to temp His humanity. In 2Cor12:7 Paul Called his Thorn in the Flesh ‘the messenger of Satan’ This is obviously a massive subject……But simply to say….Praise is a significant part of our spiritual warfare…. Psalm_22:3 (KJV) But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. When we praise God we invite Him into our situation. When we praise our Lord….we adore Him and put him on the throne of our life. Job 1:22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.God will never do wrong to us, and it’s a difficult thing to hold on to but the Lord will allow things in our life that will be true temptations. Why does He allow these things? Why do good people have bad things happen to them. Why do we have to struggle against the sin nature rising up in us? Why do we struggle with the world trying to mould us to conform? Why is the Devil allowed to attack us? I know this one thing. We have a choice…That when life goes wrong for us…..what are we going to do? Complain to God. Blame others. Give up on God….pack it in…Job could have done all that…but what did Job do? Praised God! All our enemies want to charge God with wrongdoing. Well I won’t have it….Our God is a good God. Bad things started to happen in this world because of the lies of Satan, and continue to do so. But our God is allowing things to work out in His good time. So that as many people as possible will be saved. There will be no puppets in heaven. Those end up in heaven, heaven on earth too, will be there because they want to be with God.Until then….I want to encourage you…Are you in pain…..praise God…Are you struggling financially….praise God…Have you lost a loved one…..go to God in praise…Do people mock your faith…..praise God. I don’t say to do this flippantly…But go to God in praise to bring Him close to you in your suffering. Don’t let anything allow you to push God away. Whatever you face….Praise God for being with you all the way. Whatever the situation...Through the praise establish a stronghold against your enemies. Because the reality is…Naked you came from your mother’s womb, and naked you will depart. The Lord has given to you and the Lord will take away from you; So no matter what…..Praise the name of the Lord in all things!

(Isaiah 14: 12 and Revelation 22: 16) 4. 36:00 How do I approach a family member who may be dying soon and thinks they are saved, when in my gut I truly question their salvation? 5. 37:08 Why don't you see Luke 21 (at least the beginning) as fulfilled prophecy? 6. 39:25 What is the difference between godly grief and worldly grief, and how can I repent better, specifically when dealing with lust (2 Cor. 7: 10)? 7. 44:33 Can you explain what the sevenfold spirit is, in Revelation 1: 4? 8. 48:40 What are your views on Complementarianism/Egalitarianism? 9. 52:36 Are you going to release any new worship music? 10. 53:05 Would you be able to discuss Lutheran theology sometime?/Also, would you be able to teach about eschatology and Heaven? 11. 53:58 Why has God stopped performing “big signs” like in the Old Testament? (ex: burning bush, parting the Red Sea, fire from Heaven…etc.) 12. 55:21 How can we differentiate between someone claiming new revelation from God above the Bible, and revelation as in a word or prophecy, such as 1 Corinthians 14: 30? 13. 57:53 Do you have any suggestions for a devotional that would grab my attention but be exegetical in its content? I teach a Sunday evening Bible study at Hosanna Christian Fellowship, here's the info if you want to come for a visit. I’d like you to open your Bibles this morning to the New Testament Gospel of Matthew. We are continuing a Sermon Series called It’s all about Jesus, that follows the life of our Lord and Savior chronologically from the manager through his ministry.   We often think about Jesus and see him rightfully so as the Son of God. A member of the trinity. See him as Immanuel, God with us, but we often forget the very important point that Jesus was human. He was flesh and bone. He was emotion and learning. He was wonder and caring. He was skinned knees as a kid, and tears. He had hugs for his mom. Point number 1 in your notes this morning: Surrendering to physical temptation puts our love for our body above our love for God.   Point number 2 in your notes this morning: Just because we have a God-given ability, doesn’t mean that we have God-Given permission.   Point number 3 in your notes this morning: The glory of material possessions will always be inadequate, unholy, and costly.   Point number 4 in your notes this morning: We will never outlive temptations, but we can overcome with the help of Jesus.

We win in Jesus Name Job 1:8-11 (KJV) And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
