An Ohio prisoner, Joshua Turner, has filed a lawsuit against Norfolk Southern over his alleged exposure to chemicals from the February derailment of a freight train operated by the company in East Palestine, Ohio. The lawsuit claims that his rights under the 8th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution were violated, seeking compensation for health concerns, including respiratory issues and skin rashes. Norfolk Southern has not commented on active litigation, including the proposed class action lawsuits filed by residents and businesses living near the crash site. This conversation took place in honor of the lives and legacies of #AhmaudArbery and #DreasjonReed, the young men whose lives were hatefully taken away from them in 2020. Joining us today are seven incredible Gen Z activists for a much-needed discussion on discrimination, gun violence, and hate crimes in the US, and we recorded this discussion on the day that would have been Ahmaud Arbery’s 26th birthday. There is no singular or simple answer to combating racism, but everything must start with a conversation.  Meet our panelists and check out their work to continue the conversation:  Brandon Dasent is a former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida, where a gunman killed 17 people on February 14, 2018; and is currently in the process of transferring to USF from the University Of New Orleans. Brandon, along with Mei-Ling Ho-Shing, Tyah Amoy-Roberts, and Kai Koerber co-founded the student coalition S.T.O.R.M. (Students Tactically Organizing Revolutionary Movements). The activists have taken the nation *by STORM* starting conversations about the common links between gun violence in urban communities and affluent communities. They also register first time and irregular voters to make sure everyone has a chance to take action to change the country for the better. Deborah Olatunji is a writer, award-winning poet, education activist, public speaker, and the author of Unleashing Your Innovative Genius: High School Redesigned. Deborah, a seventeen-year-old high school senior from New Castle, Delaware, is intensely passionate about being an igniter and catalytic force in the education system. As the founder of the Student Leadership Initiative Program (SLIP), she and her peers help other high school students to navigate their interests and passions through this mentorship-fueled social venture. In this episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk to Joshua Turner about how going into insulin shock twice actually was the beginning of him taking control of his type 1 diabetes and completely reversing his Colitis. Today Josh is passionate about telling everyone he can that food is medicine and that it saved his ass…well, it also saved his eyes, heart, stomach, and life. His story of when he first became diabetic to gaining over 100 pounds to that week where he had to be brought back from insulin shock twice by the paramedics is more than interesting and inspiring. It is completely emotional. He gained his whole life back and has no one to thank for it but himself and plants, although he would say Josh LaJaunie and his doctor have a lot to do with it. But at the end of the day, he showed up and did the work. What we love about this interview is how Josh is a regular guy, spending his free time trying to make a difference. His story is real as can be and is the story of so many people you know. Whether you know someone who is type one, type two or pre-diabetic, please share this episode with them.
