Film producer and author Kathy Eldon tells how traveling the world with her parents gave her a global view, but it was the death of her son, Eldon's life changed when her son died while working as a journalist in war torn Somalia. Inspired by her son Dan, Eldon founded a film production company to tell important stories.
Kathy Eldon, Pat Chandler and Creative Visions remind us we must find a way to reconnect and make greater effort to understand the plight that others are dealing with. To find our human connection. The virtue of being a storyteller is to high light a more compassionate message, with an invigorated focus on the individual narrative. How do we enliven participation and strike a chord to encourage our commonality? We are the stewards of our fragile planet and can put aside our differences to find solutions, together, and create the impossible.
Today’s conversation with Kathy Eldon and Pat Chandler boosted my spirits and reinforced my resolve. We can be heard ! This is the perfect message we want to send everyone, as you go off to the polls. Each of us matters and as Kathy has reminded us historically we always boomerang back into the light, after these challenging periods of darkness. We are rewarded by our coming together in hope and acceptance of one another. Both Kathy and Pat and the full Creative Visions Foundation reflect what true activism is about , with compassion, and creative focus on storytelling to shine a light on the best of our humanity. They look beyond themselves at the world ‘outside the cornfields’ as it were. There is magic in each of us as we engage and place ourselves boldly into what will determine our future.
Kathy Eldon lost her son, Reuters photojournalist, Dan Eldon, when he was stoned to death in Somalia at just 22 years old. She and her daughter, Amy Eldon, began an extraordinary journey after that heartbreaking event. They created a documentary entitled Dying to Tell the Story which premiered at the United Nations, and which asked journalists and journalists why they regularly risk their lives to tell the stories of tragedy. This started them on a journey of telling Dan's and other stories through books, documentaries and feature films. Kathy's memoir In the Heart of Life chronicles how she has lived around the globe yet always nestled in her heart center. She is the embodiment of open-hearted, but her greatest gift is being a spark for other's hearts to come alive in most powerful and creative ways. She will likely spark yours.
This episode explores the "creative spark" that lies within each of us, and how to use creativity to heal after a loss. Our guest, author and producer Kathy Eldon, recounts her family's vibrant life of adventure, art, and activism, and how she helped nurture her children's creativity from a young age. She also talks about how she found solace in creativity after the tragic death of her son, Dan. Purpose and resistance are often found in pairs. Kathy Eldon started her life in Iowa’s cornfields at the university best known for their literature program. This education was directly responsible for her journalism career in East Africa. As a mother of two kids and married to an Englishman during the 60’s her journalism career left a footprint in her path that inspired her son to become a photojournalist who had immense success as the writer’s news agency’s youngest professional photojournalist. While her son Dan was hot on the trail of the an economic decline story when fate struck and a U.N. attack under U.S. control--on a house believed to be keeping a warlord separated a mother from her son forever. What was actually a peace meeting ended with several hundred people wounded and 80 killed. This miscalculation led to the formation of a mob that was in blind rage and it led to the murder of a photojournalist who was trying to bring this story to a critical mass of attention. This episode covers the journey of a mother determined to get the story of her son out to a wider audience because it became a sense of purpose that could no longer be resisted.
