EPISODE 214 DETAILS Cattle Industry Top News Headlines, Christmas Gift Ideas, Market Outlooks Top Cattle Industry Headlines U.S. Tightens Import Restrictions After Screwworm Detection The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has restricted animal imports from Mexico after detecting New World screwworm (NWS) in a cow in Chiapas, Mexico. NWS larvae infest living tissue in warm-blooded animals, causing severe infections. Producers along the U.S.-Mexico border should monitor livestock and pets for signs such as draining wounds or discomfort and report any suspected cases to a veterinarian immediately. To combat the pest's spread, APHIS is deploying sterile flies and intensifying efforts in Central America. "With this detection, we will intensify measures to protect American agriculture," said Dr. Rosemary Sifford, U.S. Chief Veterinary Officer. NWS has recently spread northward due to increased cattle movement, disrupting biological barriers in the region. The USDA continues collaborating with Central American partners to contain and eradicate this threat. Mexico Threatens Trade war If Trump Implements Tariffs Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has criticized President-elect Donald Trump's proposed 25% tariff on Mexican imports, warning it could spark inflation, harm cross-border businesses, and lead to a trade war. Trump announced the tariffs as part of his immigration and drug enforcement policies, citing record illegal crossings. Sheinbaum, in office for just seven weeks, highlighted the risks in a letter to Trump, emphasizing the potential impact on industries like automotive and U.S. meat exports. According to the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), duty-free trade with Mexico has been crucial for export growth, with U.S. beef exports up 13% and pork exports up 7% year-over-year through September. Sheinbaum urged a meeting with Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to address trade and migration concerns. Meanwhile, Trump defended the tariffs, linking them to stricter immigration and drug policies. New Tariffs May Provide Financial Boost for U.S. Food Producers The Trump administration's plan to impose a 25% tariff on imports from North American neighbors and China could yield unexpected benefits for U.S. food producers, according to J.P. Morgan analyst Ken Goldman. While tariffs are expected to raise inflation and food prices, retaliatory measures could reduce global demand for U.S. crops like corn, soybeans, and wheat. This decline may lower domestic crop prices, offering cost savings to U.S. producers and potentially boosting profit margins. Goldman noted that U.S. manufacturers, less reliant on imported crops, could see these savings offset the negative impacts of tariffs on other goods. Tyson To Close Beef/Pork Facility In Kansas Tyson Foods announced the closure of its beef and pork non-harvest processing facility in Emporia, Kansas, impacting 809 employees. The plant is set to shut down by February 14, as part of Tyson's strategy to consolidate operations and boost efficiency. Operations will shift to Tyson's Holcomb plant near Garden City, according to company officials. Tyson stated it is working with state and local agencies to support affected employees. Despite the closure, Tyson continues to employ over 5,000 team members at its other Kansas facilities. 2025 Hot Culinary Trends Revealed The National Restaurant Association's 2025 Culinary Forecast highlights East Asian flavors as a major trend. Korean, Vietnamese, and Filipino cuisines ranked highest in the survey of nearly 300 U.S. food industry professionals. These cuisines also dominated the ingredients, flavors, and condiments categories.  “With diners seeking sustainable choices and bold global flavors, restaurants are offering locally sourced ingredients and creative menu options,” said Chad Moutray, Vice President of the Association. Other key trends include: Sustainability and local sourcing Mushrooms Hot honey Fermented and pickled foods Value-focused menu deals The report reflects evolving consumer priorities, including convenience, creativity, and efficiency, as operators adapt to economic and labor challenges. Bobby Charlton was a legend on the pitch for Manchester United and England, a World Cup winner, European Cup Winner and England's leading goalscorer for decades. When his playing career ended he was a trusted advisor to the Manchester United board and a TV pundit. But one of his other lasting legacies was the Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools, which provided coaching and holiday breaks to generations of players, from David Beckham to kids who only ever played for fun. When my dad, Ken Goldman, interviewed Charlton in the 1980s the Soccer Schools were the main topic of discussion, and Bobby's love of the game and passion for helping the next generation of players shone through. The Premier League is back this weekend, and Tottenham Hotspur have been dominating the headlines in the run up to kick off. Whether it is the battle to keep their talismanic striker Harry Kane or the federal charges levelled at the "owner" Joe Lewis, the Spurs hierarchy, led by chairman Daniel Levy, have their hands full. So it's an interesting moment to look back at a previous era to see how leading a top flight football team has changed and to assess what has stayed the same. In November 1984 my dad, Ken Goldman, sat down with newly installed Spurs chairman Irving Scholar to discuss his approach to running the club, the relationship between chairman and manager, transparency and communication, and his passion for Tottenham Hotspur. It's a fascinating insight into Scholar, Tottenham and English football in the pre-Premier League era. Enjoy! You can find Here Comes Pod on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon or most other podcast outlets. The Premier League launched as The Premiership in 1992 and football in England was transformed. But as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the start of this global phenomenon, we shouldn't forget that football did exist PPL - Pre Premier League. In the decade prior to the formation of the league, the 1980s, football's fortunes ebbed and flowed, but it left an indelible mark on the players and supporters who fell in love with the game prior to its Premier League existence. It was a world of one club men like Steve Perryman and Trevor Brooking who were icons of the English game. But the fans still revered the greats of the past like Pele, Cruyff and Charlton who had forged their reputations in previous eras. New managers like Alex Ferguson were trying to make their mark, and established managers like Keith Burkinshaw were winning trophies but fearing for the more commercial future as new leaders in the boardroom - men like Irving Scholar at Tottenham and David Dein at Arsenal - were re-shaping the structure of the game in response to tragedy and opportunity, supported by advisors like Alex Fynn. Foreign players like Ossie Ardiles were starting to make their mark, and managers like John Lyall were assessing the merits of bringing more into the English game. Agents like Jerome Anderson were scouring Europe for new players whilst starting to support their clients' desire to secure a better financial present and future, and coaches like West Ham's Tony Carr were trying to develop the skills in players that seemed to be disappearing in a league that became more muscular and direct in style. Media coverage was limited, but a new breed of journalists like Henry Winter were joining the ranks of the football press to bring a new insightful style of match reporting, and radio stations like LBC - led by Steve Tongue - provided the best access to the Saturday experience in the home.LBC was also the place that my dad, Ken Goldman, began his football journalism career and his archive of interviews from this era provides an incredible insight into football in England in the 1980s. In this extended episode you'll hear from all of the people above, whether they were interviewed in the 80s or sharing their recent memories of this period. I fell in love with football in the 1980s, and it was a joyous and emotional journey of revelation and reflection for me to go back to the decade that provided the platform for the Premier League that is now celebrating another milestone. I hope you enjoy the journey too! Finally many thanks to everyone who contributed as an interviewee and who helped me to connect with so many insightful and helpful people.

A CFO's job is to provide objective counsel to the CEO, who can use that information to make informed decisions about a company's future. Ken values having positive relationships with everyone in the company, including the board members and the engineering and accounting teams. A strong, company-wide rapport encourages collaboration in administrative and accounting tasks, and ensures everything runs smoothly. In this episode of The CFO Playbook, Ken encourages people to take a look at CFO roles even if they don't have a background in accounting, and discusses the importance of software system management, maintaining relationships with activist investors, and work-life balance.Connect with Ken on LinkedIn.Connect with our host Ross on LinkedIn.If you want a better way to track and control your team's spend, checkout Soldo.com.

I’m interviewing Ken Goldman. He’s the founder of a unique brand of dog gear called Stunt Puppy. It offers products such as collars and leashes that are designed and made in the United States, right here in Minnesota. The company designs products with cues from the rugged camping and climbing gear industry, so they are extra durable. Seems pretty smart and cool. Ken’s products are available at StuntPuppy.com, as well as through many retailers across the United States. To learn more about his company, visit StuntPuppy.com. Hello, Ken. Thanks for being here, and welcome to the Product Launch Rebel podcast. Ken:  Oh, it’s great to be here. Thanks for the invitation. John:  Absolutely. This is going to be a lot of fun. Thanks for your time. Ken, within this podcast there are three segments. The first is called “give me the basics,” which helps set the context about your company for our listeners. The second part is called “let’s get personal” where we get into some of the more personal topics about what it’s like to start a business. The final part is what I call “tell me how” where we’ll get to the heart of the matter on issues that aspiring entrepreneurs want to know now to help them move forward. What do you think, Ken, are you ready for some questions? Ken:  I’m ready and I’m hoping you’re gonna tell me how at the end. John:  Fantastic, here we go! 02:29 — Ken, tell us the story. And that combined with the fact that I know how to sew, combined with the fact that I love gear, uh, it just all kinda came together. I went down to my basement and started making stuff for he and I. So we were, it’s definitely a happy accident. Um, then layer on top of that, I have another company that’s a marketing agency and we kind of looked at it and said, hey, we could build a brand around that. So that was 11 years ago. 03:31 — John:  Yeah. That’s very interesting. And tell me about your sewing background. How did you get into that? Ken:  Definitely not on purpose. My mom, who still sews to this day, she’s a big quilter and so I was the youngest of three and just kind of hanging around so I stepped in a lot of pins and needles growing up and their fabric swatches all over the place and so I just wanted in on that. So I learned how to sell early and you know, I learned a sewing machine wasn’t something strange to me and I always kind of had one. It’s not that I was making myself...
