Pete Carroll changed my life.I can vividly recall calling a few of my teammates at Pitt during my first week on the job as a member of the USC Football staff in the winter of 2005. “Guys, I wish you could have been coached by Pete Carroll and this staff. It's incredible!”My former teammates would often ask why and while I couldn't nail the answer, I could compete to explain the energy, optimism and education he shared every day. From the moment I met him at 19-years-old to now, there has not been a greater influence in all aspects of my life. Of course in football, as Coach Carroll offered me a lens into the game that very few have. But he also impacted me as a friend, father and husband. I've often said that my parents created the clay that is my life and Pete molded it in my 20s. A month before I got married, I flew to Seattle as I just had to get some time with Coach. He had been in the NFL for a while and I'd been building my life in Los Angeles. We would speak a few times a year and each time, I felt impacted. We sat down in his corner office on a random Wednesday at the Seahawks facility and for 60 minutes he just coached me on marriage. “Yogi, you have to compete at this thing. Compete to listen, compete to show up, compete to see her.” I thought we might talk about his team, my career, and maybe my pending wedding but it was all about life off the field. As I reflected back on my flight home, I came to the conclusion that our conversation was a master class on all things human interaction. And I missed it.For four years at USC, I would experience those conversations almost daily. I was the young coach sleeping in the office and he was the head coach, at times also sleeping in the office. That was where we would connect and eventually formulate ideas and concepts that at their core, were about impacting people to maximize their potential. Or as he would say, Win Forever. One of my core memories at USC, that extended beyond the field, was when Coach Carroll invited me on one of his annual Tuesday night visits to South Central Los Angeles. We walked the city, met with locals and even played some hoops in a nearby gym. That night under a light post I was able to get him one-on-one, away from others. I asked him a simple question, “Pete, it's the middle of September, and tonight is your birthday…why are you pouring so much into others and why are you barely speaking?”He looked toward the skyline and softly responded, “Because I have to. And they don't need to hear from me. I don't need to talk, I need to listen.”Those words are stitched on my soul as Pete Carroll has always made anyone in his path feel seen, and always heard. It's game week in college football and on the bottom of my broadcasting board reads, “listen like your life depends on it.” That's attributed to the man who took the time to listen to a 19 year old in college, a 22 year old on his staff and in today's podcast, a man in his early 40s who is still seeking knowledge from a man who has so much to give.I hope you enjoy our conversation, presented by our founding partner in 76, as it was my most enjoyable in quite some time. This episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby with cinematography and editing by Blue Ox Films. This podcast is a Best Coast Media production. Did the hopes for the Seahawks 2023 season hang on the result of a coin flip? If Geno Smith doesn't get the ball in overtime with a chance at redemption, then our postgame commentary about our quarterback would have been much more critical. Ken Walker and Tyler Lockett each scored two touchdowns, including the game winner by Lockett. Tyler explained why he decided to go against one of the team's primary coaching points and, of course, Coach Carroll took no issue with it. The Carolina Panthers come into town with the first pick overall leading the team at quarterback. Just like the Seahawks, the Panthers are playing without two of their starting offensive lineman. Dre'mont Jones could be due for a big game in the interior of the defensive line. The Seahawks may also need him to help stop a rushing attack led by Miles Sanders. Could the defense get a boost with a possible return of Jamal Adams? Despite allowing the Rams to take some momentum into Week 2 of the season, the 49ers were able to pull ahead in the fourth quarter to take the top spot in the division for now. The Cardinals are hanging in games, even if they're giving up huge leads to the likes of Daniel Jones. Do better call outs go to the votes of the air player of the week and some bad officiating. Better at Life honors go to Nick Chubb and a Colts player who scored his first NFL touchdown.

The Cover-3 defense use to be what the Seahawks and Coach Carroll were known for running nearly all the time. For years, they would lean into that simple coverage and dominate with it. In recent years the Cover-3 has been exposed and the Hawks needed to evolve with it. Last year they did, expanding to a new scheme that solves some of the issues of the Cover-3 defense, while also looking to take advantage of the unique skillsets of guys like Tariq Woolen, Quandre Diggs, Jamal Adams and Bobby Wagner. On the show today, I'm going to show you why quarter quarter man coverage might be the answer to helping turning around the fate of this defense from last year. Want to mail the show? The Seahawks future is very bright. As we now pass well over a decade under the tenure of General Manager John Schneider and Coach Carroll we have seen them evole in recent years, adjusting issues within the organization that had been glaring for a team. With the rookies from the Seahawks 2023 NFL Draft reporting to mini camp, we got the first chance to hear directly from them at the VMAC. Their interviews give us another perspective on the players, their personalities and reactions to their transition to professional football. Before we get to the class, we hear from Pete Carroll and get a sense of how he's been energized going into the upcoming season. Pete certainly made an early impression on some of the rookies, as Derick Hall commented on Coach Carroll's first meeting with the players. As excited as we were initially with players from the first two days, we became more intrigued by the late round players based off of their interviews. Jerrick Reed talked about giving up video games to dive into the playbook while Olu Oluwatimi talked about the transition from a pro style offense playing at Michigan. In the second half of the show, we talk about how the Russell Wilson trade turned out for the Seahawks now that all of the picks are in. We also put into perspective any complaints about the offseason in comparison with some of the other NFL organizations. In the Do Better segment, Adam tells a story about an awkward interaction during his trip to the store. Better at Life honors go to a truck stop chain for a very specific feature and to the Seahawks player with the best reaction to being drafted.

The 2022 regular season has come to a conclusion and Pete Carroll has finished the year with another winning record. Not only that, he swept both Kliff Kingsbury and Sean McVay on his way to a 9-8 season with Geno Smith under center. Now Kingsbury has been cast out of Arizona and reports are that McVay could be done in LA. That could leave us with just one NFC West Frat Boy remaining of the trio. But is there a route to where Pete is the last man standing in the division after this weekend? First, the Seahawks would have to get a win over a San Francisco 49ers team that is considered one of the best teams in the NFL going into the post season. Their 10-game winning streak would have to come to an end. What factors at play this weekend actually favor the Seahawks? There's certainly some history on Seattle's side when it comes to Coach Carroll and the postseason. Secondly, the loss dealt to the Niners would have to come in a devastating fashion, and in a way not unfamiliar to Kyle Shannahan. But is that really the way we would want to see our Seahawks win on Saturday? We all have something to say after the doubters wrote off the Seahawks 2022 season - and it's not over, yet! The Seattle Seahawks defense in recent years has been a far cry from the dominance of the LOB days. For the past five years, the defense has at its best lingered around middle of the pack, and at its worst, in the bottom fifteen of the league. With the firing of Ken Norton Jr. and the collection of coaches that Carroll is swirling around, we can get a better idea for adjustments Coach Carroll intends to bring into the fold for next season. By the appearances of it, Coach Carroll is evolving his old defense machinations. On today's show, I'm going to discuss some of those changes, and how it can help this Seahawks defense get back to being one of the better units in the NFL. Come join the discussion! After taking a good amount of time in their search the Seattle Seahawks are expected to announce Clint Hurtt as their next defensive coordinator. Clint has been serving as a defensive line coach for the Seahawks since 2017. Once again, Coach Carroll promotes from within. Ed Donatell is also expected to join the staff as a passing game coordinator. We'll discuss this hiring, and what it means for the future of the defense. The Senior Bowl also just wrapped up, and we'll be talking college prospects who stood out, and also might be a target for our Seattle Seahawks. Link to my YouTube Channel. Much-maligned Ken Norton Jr. has been let go by the Seahawks. A move many wanted to see amongst the 12's. The early list of replacements have been leaked and we'll take a look at these potential options. Who is an upgrade, who will be more of the same? Will a new coordinator matter considering this is still Coach Carroll's defense, his '67 Mustang that he only takes out on Sundays, and never goes up 35 miles-per-hour. We will discuss.
