It's 100th episode of Creator Talks! Returning for this celebration is my guest from episode #4 Peter Milligan! First, I get an update from Peter on how his German lessons are progressing and on the life drawing class by Jason Atomic he attendedwhich included a lecture by an Egyptologist. Speaking of Egypt, will we see another arc of the The Mummy (Titan) from Peter? How about more of Rome's Antonius Axia, the ancient world's first detective from the series Britannia (Valiant)? Moving on, I discuss Peter’s current work including The Prisoner (Titan), Kid Lobotomy(Black Crown /IDW), and Legion (Marvel). What is Peter’s reaction to the Legion television series on FX? How does the art style used his mini-series Legion help the reader connect with the bizarre landscape of David Haller's mind?   How does the art help a story with the surreal characters and places in The Prisoner? What does it mean to describe something as Kafkaesque? Peter talks about his favorite work by Franz Kafka, The Metamorphosis. Peter also has an unfliching response for his choice of deserted island book, plus answers all my other Rest and Relation questions! Time Codes: 00:00:30 - Introduction 00:03:00 - Our new Kickstarter series and Slack channel! 00:08:48 - Kid Lobotomy #1 and #2 00:31:09 - Carnival of Contagion 00:48:15 - Monograph 01:20:23 - Wrap up 01:23:15 - Contact us This week Paul and Derek review three new titles that are all quite different in content and audience. They begin with the first two issues of Peter Milligan and Tess Fowler's Kid Lobotomy, the first series in IDW's new Black Crown imprint. The guys start their discussion by referencing Shelly Bond and her stated intentions behind the new creator-owned line. But while they're certainly amenable to the edgy or punk mentality that had once defined Vertigo, the guys feel that in her commentary in these first two issues, Bond is trying a little too hard to be hip and get us on board. And while both Derek and Paul are fans of Milligan's storytelling, there's something a little too much, something too crowded or unwieldy, about the premise of Kid Lobotomy. Nonetheless, given the creative team on this title, and its place in the new Black Crown line, the guys are going to give this series a lot of rope in hopes of being won over. Next, the guys discuss Carnival of Contagion, a new educational comic from the University of Nebraska Press that's all about vaccination awareness. Illustrated by Bob Hall, and written by him as well (along with John West and Judy Diamond), this is a title that's apparently intended for classroom use. As Paul and Derek reveal, the story may be a little dry -- and even didactic in places -- but it effectively drives home the importance of vaccination not only for individuals, but for our communities as well. Finally, the Two Guys turn to a behemoth of a text, Chris Ware's Monograph (Rizolli). Both Derek and Paul are big fans of Ware's creativity, and they're mesmerized by the sheer beauty and ingenuity contained within this work (which is much more of an art book, and one with autobiographical impulses, than a comic). However, they're a little put off at times by the apologetic tone of the author. Granted, Chris Ware is known for his self-deprecation, where he feels he has to apologize for his comics efforts as an artist. But such a stance can also take on a more self-aggrandizing quality, highlighting the uniqueness -- and the "seriousness" or the high-brow-ness -- of the project and contrasting it to more "common" or mainstream comics. This can also be seen in Art Spiegelman's introduction and his emphasis on "comix." But despite these minor annoyances, the guys are completely taken by this volume and strongly recommend it to not only Chris Ware fans, but to serious comics readers as a whole.

Will sibling rivalry, seduction, and shapeshifting eventually lead to sanity or salvation? Big Daddy is a rich hotelier who, in a cracked echo of King Lear, appoints his youngest descendant to manage The Suites, a peculiar hotel located behind the Black Crown Pub. Affectionately known as Kid, his good looks and swagger can't hide a rough childhood of strange therapies and brain operations that have awakened inner demons and psychodramas. This of course makes him eminently qualified to perform lobotomies. A failed rockstar/successful madman gets one last change to prove his worth—and regain his sanity—by turning the hotel that was once his childhood sanctuary into a lucrative business, despite a host of obstacles—including his own sister—who would love nothing more than to see him fail miserably. Tess Fowler is an artist with an incredible sense of passion and heart which she pours into every project that she becomes involved in - that can sometimes mean that, for someone who makes sure to guard her privacy and personal space, having her heart on her sleeve in such a public manner can make her vulnerable to the elements. But she gets out there anyway and she faces the storms fearlessly. Which is why there's an initial sense of surprise and then an understandable reasoning why she has accepted the request of her new editor, the legendary Shelly Bond, to brave the crowds and bedlam of San Diego Comic-Con, an entity which has over the years evolved into a sanity-devouring beast of its own. Bond has set up BLACK CROWN PUBLISHING, a new imprint of IDW Publishing, and Fowler is the artist on the book first out of the gate for Black Crown: KID LOBOTOMY, written by the equally legendary - and creativity intimidating - Peter Milligan. BLACK CROWN is a unique space in comics in that the books that come from the imprint will all exist in a defined world, centred around the Black Crown Pub, a venue where I suspect requests for a glass of water or orange juice will be dismissed with much scorn from the ornately-inked bar staff, and Little Mix will not be featuring on the battered but beloved vintage jukebox. I caught up with Tess Fowler on the last day of San Diego Comic-Con to talk primarily about KID LOBOTOMY, but the conversation turned, as many about Black Crown do, to the maddening, frustrating, rewarding, uplifting, soul-defining working relationships between Tess and her writer and editor...
