On this week's Comics Syllabus, some examination of “Shang-Chi”… but not the movie, since host Paul is still avoiding theaters. Pandemic! Delta! (For a good take on Marvel's groundbreaking movie, check out Christopher Chiu-Tabet's Multiversity review as well as All Over the Internet.) Instead, Paul shares thoughts on the recent Marvel series written by Gene Luen Yang and drawn by Dike Ruan and Philip Tan, including the five issue mini-series “Brothers and Sisters” and the first three issues of the current ongoing. Then, a brief “Polybagged” with mentions of comics that Paul's recently been reading, including: “Jia and the Nian Monster” by Mike Richardson and Megan Huang (Dark Horse) “Amazing Fantasy” #1-2 by Kaare Andrews (Marvel) “Always Never” by Jordi Lafebre (Europe Comics) “Eve” #1-4 by Victor LaValle and Jo Mi-Gyeong (Boom!) “Superman: Son of Kal-El” #1-2 by Tom Taylor and John Timms with Gabe Eltaeb (DC) “Mouse Guard: Fall 1152” by David Peterson (Villard, 2008) Finally, we launch our “Long Read” for the Fall, a re-read of “Y the Last Man” by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. With the show coming in a couple weeks, join us as we read the original run of this series. A reading schedule: Deluxe Edition v1 and v2: Sep 19, 2021 Deluxe Edition v3 and v4: Oct 3, 2021 Deluxe Edition v5 and v6: Oct 17, 2021 Read with us! This episode we're reviewing four new #1 comic books with Ironheart, Bitter Root, Marvel Knights and The Black Order. (Rebekah's pick) Ironheart #1 from MARVEL COMICS written by Eve Ewing with art by Kevin Libranda THE STAR OF INVINCIBLE IRON MAN HEADLINES HER OWN SOLO SERIES! CHAMPIONS artist Kevin Libranda joins award-winning poet Eve Ewing, as Ironheart steps boldly out of Tony Stark's shadow to forge her own future! Rated T (Rod's Pick) Marvel Knights #1 from MARVEL COMICS written by Donny Cates with art by Travel Foreman In celebration of the legendary imprint founded by Marvel's CCO Joe Quesada, a new crop of talent stands poised to tell a groundbreaking story across the Marvel Universe! In the cemetery, the blind man does not know who he is, or why he has come to this particular grave at this moment. He doesn't know the burly police officer with the wild story who has approached him. Or the strangely intense man who sits in the rear seat of the patrol car, his eyes flashing green. But all of that is about to change. Because Matt Murdock is beginning to remember...In a colorless world without heroes, the spark of light...must come from the dark... Rated T (Joe's Pick) Black Order #1 from MARVEL COMICS written by Derek Landy with art by Philip Tan FROM THE INFINITY WAR INTO THEIR OWN LIMITED SERIES! They are the five dreadlords, the Cull Obsidian, Thanos' most feared warriors and disciples... The bombastic writing style of novelist Derek Landy (Skulduggery Pleasant) and the electrifying artwork of Philip Tan combine for an absolutely unhinged super-villain adventure! Rated T+ (Brian's Pick) Bitter Root #1 from IMAGE COMICS written by Chuck Brown & David F Walker with art by Sanford Greene In the 1920s, the Harlem Renaissance is in full swing, and only the Sangerye Family can save New York-and the world-from the supernatural forces threatening to destroy humanity. But the once-great family of monster hunters has been torn apart by tragedies and conflicting moral codes. The Sangerye Family must heal the wounds of the past and move beyond their differences... or sit back and watch a force of unimaginable evil ravage the human race.DAVID F. WALKER and SANFORD GREENE, the creative team of Power Man and Iron Fist, along with indie veteran CHUCK BROWN (Trench Coats, Cigarettes and Shotguns) bring you 24 action-packed pages of monsters, mayhem, and family dysfunction in a brand-new ongoing series.

Thus the Mouse Guard was formed. After persevering against a weasel warlord in the winter war of 1149, the territories are no longer as troubled. True, the day to day dangers exist, but no longer are the Guard soldiers, instead they are escorts, pathfinders, weather watchers, scouts and body guards for the mice who live among the territories. Many skills are necessary for the guard to keep the borders safe. They must find new safeways and paths from village to village, lead shipments of goods from one town to another and, in case of attack, guard against all evil and harm to their territories.” They are not simply soldiers that fight off intruders; rather, they are guides for the common mice looking to journey without confrontation from one hidden mouse village to another. The Guard patrols borders, finds safeways and paths through dangerous territories and treacherous terrain, watches weather patterns, and keeps the mouse territories free of predators. They do so with fearless dedication so that they might not just exist, but truly live.
