On this episode of GoalChat, host Debra Eckerling discusses graphic novels with Ben Berkowitz, co-writer of The Writer, along with his brother, Max, and actor Josh Gad, and cartoonist Chari Pere of the "Unspoken" Cartoonmentary series, among others. According to them, a graphic novel is a book-length work, where you explore themes and stories (Ben) through images and imagery (Chari). It's a quick clean, detailed way to tell a story. Ben and Chari talk about the process of creating a graphic novel, what and who inspires them, their dream projects, and more. Getting Started - Ben: Find the spark that makes you want to run with it - Chari: Be ready to run with it. Some projects are "not yet - Chari: You have an idea, look at other books in that genre, make a summary, turn it into beats, sketch thumbnails, get more and more detailed - Ben: If you are not doing the art, you need to build the team. (The Writer is illustrated by Marvel and DC Comics legend Ariel Olivetti, whom the Berkowitz Brothers pitched via Instagram DM.) Goals - Chari: If you are struggling with an idea, take a noun and an action, and tell a story with that - Ben: Finish something Final Thoughts - Ben: Lean into the spark - Chari: Give yourself permission to do what you want to do to get your ideas out there Learn More About Ben Berkowitz: NotaBillionaire.com Char Pere: ChariPere.com Debra Eckerling: TheDEBMethod.com/blog 52SecretsBook.com Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Ben and Max Berkowitz aka the Berkowitz Brothers. The award-winning producing and writing duo (NotABillionaire.com) co-wrote the graphic novel, “The Writer,” along with Josh Gad. “The Writer,” illustrated by Marvel and DC Comics legend Ariel Olivetti (who they pitched via Instagram DM), is a four-issue series, to be released in trade paperback on April 22. The supernatural adventure comic - in the vein of an Indiana Jones story - follows Stan Siegel, a comic book writer whose life unravels when the fantastical worlds that he writes about start bleeding into reality. “We also added a lot of our family stories into this as well,” Max explains. “We put our mom into the story; it's literally Josh Gad's character's mom.” Adds Ben, “Our mother's character, Liz, in the book, is constantly pushing food on the characters.” Ben and Max clearly have strong ties to food. “ Our family, we always talk about the next meal, even when we're eating a meal,” Max says. “It's always on our mind.” “For us, food has always been the connector, bringing people from walks of life [together],” Ben says. “When our dad helped build out the family restaurant business … it was made to bring people [together] to enjoy just good, simple fish dishes.” Whether your family business is fish or creating content, you need to navigate what's most important for work and your home life. “At the end of the day, what kind of solved most any argument was a great meal,” Ben says. “If anything, it stops people from talking because their mouths were too full of food.” The Berkowitz Bros talk about how “The Writer” came together, their family food legacy, bagel and other eating habits, and more. They also share their father's famous whitefish salad recipe, which you can get at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. Check out NABvid.com and follow @BerkowitzBros and @TheWriterComic on Instagram. Episode 45 - Murdock and Marvel: 1997 Part 2 We've got a pretty quiet week in comic terms, partly because everything has gone completely to the dogs, and there is a lot less happening than there was a few years ago. Still, I was surprised to find that 1997 had some pretty great things going on under the surface! This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1997. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #360-370, Daredevil #-1, Adventures of Spider-Man #10, Bug #1, Code of Honor #2-4, Punisher #17-18, Venom: On Trial #1-3, Marvel Valentine Special #1, Silver Surfer #128, Essential Spider-Man #2, Electra #-1, Ka-Zar #5 and 8, Uncanny Origins #13, Elektra #10-11 and 13, Marvel Heroes & Legends 1997 #1, Spider-Man El Hombre Arana #30, Spider-Man Unlimited #18, Thunderbolts #8 along with Daredevil/Batman, Untold Tales of Spider-Man '97, Kingpin, Origin of Marvel Comics Revised Edition and Son of Origins of the Marvel Comics Revised Edition graphic novels Writing: Karl Kesel (#360-364), Joe Kelly (#365-370 and #-1) Pencils: Cary Nord (#360-362, 364-365), Gene Colan (#363, -1, 366-368, 370), Ariel Olivetti (#369) Inks: Matt Ryan (#360-362, 364-365, -1), Cam Smith and Paul Neary (#363), Al Williamson (#366), Bud LaRosa (#367-368, 370), Pier Brito (#369) The year begins with Daredevil taking on the Absorbing Man as he tries to take down NYC with no Avengers to stop him. While that's going on, we learn why Foggy was so keen on partnering with Rosalind Sharpe – she's his biological mother. And it's Sharpe who thinks Foggy and the firm need to play up Foggy's “best bud” status with Daredevil – which leads to work for the firm as Molten Man (Mark Raxton) seeks help with break-ins at Osborne Chemicals. Daredevil is reunited with the Black Widow as the pair take down the Grey Gargoyle. We learn a bit about Rosalind's Sharpe's past after Daredevil saves her from an armed man in the firm's lobby then follow's her to visit the gangster responsible. Next we get a multi-book story involving a new villainous, Insomnia – he's try to keep Daredevil and the rest of New York up at night. We eventually learn she's working for Mr Fear – who himself is causing trouble by enlisting a friend of Molten Man to release a gas during a Osborn Chemicals boardroom meeting which causes Raxton to freak out and start tearing the place apart. Before we can get a resolution to Mr Fear, we get a Flashback issue of Daredevil (Daredevil #-1) in which Jack Murdock is taking his son Matt to college. This story, from writer Joe Kelly and art by Gene Colan and Matt Ryan is a lot of fun and will be our spotlight story of the week. Returning back to present time, Daredevil must, once again, deal with Mr Fear's plotting – this time on Ryker's Island when Fear releases a gas to start a prison riot. Daredevil must then take on new and improved Gladiator. (what happened to fear???) The year ends with a multi-book storyline called “widow's Kiss” that starts with Daredevil helping a firm client who's facing a hostile takeover by the Russians – only to have to tangle Omega Red. Black Widow comes to the aid of Daredevil only to then shoot him herself. She tries then save DD by bring him to Karen for help, before returning to meet with a Russian general we eventually learn she's trying to take down. Despite just being shot, Daredevil goes after Widow and gets the pair captured. The story ends Daredevil escapes and convinces Ursa Major and Vanguard that they are being used by the General – and that he's being running experiments on Vanguards sister – Darkstar. One other secondary story that ran through much of the year involves Foggy and Liz Osborne. Rosalind Sharpe isn't pleased with their relationship and continually tries to undermine it – with other women. In the final book of the year Foggy and Liz's attempt to have a romantic evening together is derailed when he receives a constant stream of phone calls from other women. They start off with Michael DeForge's latest book, Sticks Angelica, Folk Hero (Drawn and Quarterly). While this is an unusual story, it's nonetheless one of DeForge's most conventional stories, at least when compared to many of his previous works. It's an episodic narrative about its titular character, a multi-talented 49-year-old woman who moves to a Canadian national park to escape a scandal surrounding her rich father's finances. There she befriends a bunny named Oatmeal, a moose lawyer who goes by the name "Lisa Hanawalt," a love-struck eel, a "marked" young woman called Girl McNally, dumb geese, proxy ants, a bear chronicler, and the park's wannabe reporter "Michael DeForge." Did we mention that this is one of DeForge's more conventional stories? This title began as a webcomic on Tumblr, and while people can still find the complete comic up and available, the guys strongly recommend that listeners get the new book to fully take in the physical, tactile experience. Next, the Two Guys with PhDs turn to the four new Hanna-Barbera one-shots from DC Comics: the Adam Strange/Future Quest Special (by Mark Andreyko, Jeff Parker, and Steve Lieber), the Booster Gold/The Flintstones Special (Mark Russell, Rick Leonardi, and Scott Hanna), the Green Lantern/Space Ghost Special (James Tynion IV, Christopher Sebela, and Ariel Olivetti), and the Suicide Squad/The Banana Splits Special (Tony Bedard, Ben Caldwell, and Mark Morales). They both enjoy all four of the titles, although Derek has some reservations about the Suicide Squad/Banana Splits team-up, and Andy feels that the Green Lantern/Space Ghost one is a missed opportunity. But they spend about as much time discussing the short backups in these four specials, with Howard Chaykin's Ruff 'n' Reddy being a standout. Is that any surprise?
