Today's guest on the Cryptid Creator Corner has worked in comics as both an editor and a writer since 2008. He worked for Marvel Entertainment, Image Comics, Kodansha, Viz, Vault Comics, and Wizards of the Coast. In 2018, he helped launch TKO Studios as Editor-in-Chief. It's Sebastian Girner and he's now embarked on a new endeavor with Goats Flying Press! They've already launch The Dead and the Damned #1 and #2 and The Fables of Erlking Wood. Sebastian and Jimmy discuss those 2 projects, including the stunning artwork of Kelly Williams and the incredible artistry of Juni Ba. Sebastian talks about his hopes for Goats Flying Press and previews what is coming up in 2025, including Lake Yellowwood Slaughter, described as "The “official comic adaptation” of the most infamous Italian Giallo you've never seen!" Jimmy's brother Bobby is very excited about that one after seeing the cover at Baltimore Comic-Con. Sebastian Girner and Kelly Williams join the show to talk about the second issue of their comic The Dead and the Damned, currently on Kickstarter.
The Dead the Damned could be 2024's theme for the comics industry. For now, it's the title of Goats Flying Press's first release. After a two-year break, I talked with Sebastian Girner about his new publishing venture, Goats Fly Press, and whether it was a smart idea to launch a new company during these crazy times for comic book publishing. Sebastian really gets into the details about his present and future plans and the attitude he's taking. It's an honest and optimistic conversation. We even try to figure out if Marvel and DC Comics are relevant nowadays.Portrait of an Editor has a sponsor: Magic Mind, an excellent productivity elixir. The show's discounts are available at https://www.magicmind.co/portraitofaneditor with discount code ANTIX20. The code is valid forever and offers 20% off one-time purchases and subscriptions.

TKO Studios is the Criterion Collection of comic books. Every release is a blind-buy, and we try not to miss a one. As such, it's an incredible delight to have Editor-In-Chief Sebastian Girner and writer/artist Juni Ba on the show this week. TKO is making its first serious move into the Young Adult (YA) market with three new graphic novels: Djeliya, Scales and Scoundrels Book 1: Where Dragons Wander, and Scales and Scoundrels Book 2: The Festival of Life. All three are currently available, and we happily slap our CBCC seal of approval on them. Djeliya is the result of what happens when Cartoon Network seeps into a young boy from Senegal. It's a rich, gorgeous Afro-fantasy adventure that at once feels very familiar while also operating as an entirely original creation. In the future, you'll want to claim yourself as one of Ba's first fans. Get on the ground floor of this masterpiece today. Girner's Scales and Scoundrels collections are also fantasy quest adventures but of a totally different variety. They are the antidote to grimdark Game of Thrones wannabes. Girner and artist Galaad craft a warm, sunny saga that contains all the tropes you want from the genre but also a bright optimism sorely missing these days. Whether you've read the comics already or not, you're going to have a good time with this week's Creator Corner conversations. These two artists are stirring quality content, and the thought they bring to their stories is incredibly inspiring. You'll want to follow Sebastian Girner on Twitter HERE, as well as Juni Ba HERE. And, of course, purchase your copies of Djeliya and Scales and Scoundrels via TKO Studios' website HERE. Also, if you want to own Lisa Gullickson's first published piece of art, pre-order Weapon Echh over at 100% Comics HERE. This week in Episode 301, you’ll hear my great interview with comics editor/scripter Sebastian Girner as he talks about his new Image comic Scales and Scoundrels. You may remember Mr. Girner from his other successful comic, Shirtless Bear Fighter, which we also discuss briefly. However, the focus in on his new title with accomplished artist Galaad, so we get into how the series has come to be, who the characters are, and what we can expect from Sebastian in the future! On this week's Off Panel, David digs into the lesser talked about world of editors with freelance editor to the stars Sebastian Girner. He's the man who edits books like Deadly Class, Southern Bastards and Drifter, and they talk about what his role entails, how he impacts books, whether or not he can live entirely off that work, managing the chaos, the shift of focus to creator-owned cmics, his time at Marvel, continuity, fan ownership, and much more. It's really excellent insight into what comic editors really do, and recommended listening for both readers and creators.
We are joined by Alec Ward of the Nerd Management podcast to talk with Sebastian Girner who manages many epic comics at Image and who has also worked on Deadpool, Punisher Max, and Wolverine at Marvel.
