Writer Patton Oswalt and artist Scott Hepburn join host Aaron Sagers to talk the major comic Minor Threats. In a world of superheroes, sometimes the minor league villains can become queens. And the benchwarmer heroes can become legends. Created by Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum and artist Scott Hepburn, and published by Dark Horse Comics, Minor Threats made an impact in the superhero comic world last year, and now the second volume, "The Fastest Way Down," launches April 3. Also, the trade paperback of The Alternates, about B-list superheroes from the pages of Minor Threats who get a taste of greatness, drops April 17. Patton Oswalt and Scott Hepburn discuss their expanding comic universe, as well as the next upcoming spinoff Barfly and where else they might take these characters. And for good measure, we ask Patton about ghosts and his role in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. MORE ABOUT MINOR THREATS Minor Threats is graphic crime drama about superheroes and villains and the last gasp of the colorful innocent days of the silver and bronze age before they're dragged into the grit-soaked modern era. Now, Minor Threats is back for Volume 2, subtitled “The Fastest Way Down” In the first issue, dropping April 3, Frankie Follis AKA the costumed criminal Playtime has won. Twilight City's greatest hero The Insomniac and its greatest villain The Stickman are dead, allowing Frankie to unify the super crook underworld and assert herself as the Queenpin of the Redport neighborhood. But Frankie is feeling the pressure from every side. Rival gangs are challenging her authority, her partner Scalpel is pushing her to legitimize her empire, and the act of murdering The Insomniac has broken something deep inside her. Frankie is about to learn the hard way . . . heavy is the head that wears the supervillain crown. But wait, there's more from the world of Minor Threats: Spinning out of the world of Minor Threats is The Alternates, a tale of costumed underdogs--featuring a support group for superheroes, who are struggling to reclaim their mediocre lives in this world after tasting their true potential in another dimension called The Ledge. That's written by Oswalt, Blum and Tim Seeley with art by Tess Fowler, Christopher Mitten and covers by Hepburn. AND Dark Horse Comics is buzzing with some exciting news: the world of Minor Threats continues expanding with a new spinoff series, Barfly! Comic book legend Kyle Starks (Where Monsters Lie) joins Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum on writing duties on a feel-good, coming-of-age series about an insect monster-man searching for his identity in the criminal underworld of Twilight City. Ryan Browne, co-creator of the critically-acclaimed series Eight Billion Genies, will provide artwork for Barfly, with letters handled by Nate Piekos (Minor Threats). The first issue will also feature a main cover art by Minor Threats co-creator Scott Hepburn, with three variant covers featuring art by Browne, Martín Morazzo, Dan Hipp (1:10 ratio), and one more to be revealed at a later date. The series is set to begin this July. _______________________________________________________________ If you like Talking Strange, please subscribe, leave a nice review, and share with your friends. WCA 2019: IN CONVERSATION WITH TESS FOWLER (RECORDED AT WONDERCON ANAHEIM, 30TH MARCH 2019) Comic-Con International‘s sibling convention, WonderCon (29th-31st March 2019, Anaheim Convention Center), has over the years grown and developed into a truly epic event in the North America comic convention calendar, selling out over its entire weekend and bringing thousands of talented creators, publishers, artists, writers, cosplayers, actors and actresses and much more to Anaheim in California. WonderCon has developed and evolved from what was primarily a passive ‘experience’ delivering show into one which companies and creators can now bring new projects and share updates on brand new content – we have been lucky to have a couple of correspondents visiting the show as Press, catching up with a number of these fresh stories. One such correspondent is Dan Berry (@fatj00) who met up this weekend with comics artist Tess Fowler, who has been on the most incredible creative ride in recent years: not only being part of the superstar team behind the incredibly successful and critically acclaimed KID LOBOTOMY (Black Crown/IDW) with Peter Milligan, as well as being a hugely popular component to the CRITICAL ROLE fandom and community, but also now providing art for the brand new DUNGEONS & DRAGONS comic from IDW Publishing, A DARKENED WISH, written by B. Dave Walter and coloured by Jay Fotos. A DARKENED WISH is a sprawling, epic ensemble book which very much plays into Tess’ wheelhouse, as well as her love of tabletop gaming. Here, in this chat with Dan, she talks about how the book came about, what drives her towards these styles of stories, how her loves and fandoms feed into her work, and teases where the seemingly limitless story of A DARKENED WISH could possibly lead us. Find out more about DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: A DARKENED WISH at its comiXology page, as well as following Tess and B. Dave Walters on social media – they’re quite rightfully very proud of the book and talk about it a lot (as well as lots of other things, such as eating out in L.A.!) Thanks to Tess for taking time out of her very busy con to talk, and also to Dan Berry for bring the interview to us. Intro Music: ‘Punky’, bensound.com

Time Codes: 00:00:30 - Introduction 00:03:00 - Our new Kickstarter series and Slack channel! 00:08:48 - Kid Lobotomy #1 and #2 00:31:09 - Carnival of Contagion 00:48:15 - Monograph 01:20:23 - Wrap up 01:23:15 - Contact us This week Paul and Derek review three new titles that are all quite different in content and audience. They begin with the first two issues of Peter Milligan and Tess Fowler's Kid Lobotomy, the first series in IDW's new Black Crown imprint. The guys start their discussion by referencing Shelly Bond and her stated intentions behind the new creator-owned line. But while they're certainly amenable to the edgy or punk mentality that had once defined Vertigo, the guys feel that in her commentary in these first two issues, Bond is trying a little too hard to be hip and get us on board. And while both Derek and Paul are fans of Milligan's storytelling, there's something a little too much, something too crowded or unwieldy, about the premise of Kid Lobotomy. Nonetheless, given the creative team on this title, and its place in the new Black Crown line, the guys are going to give this series a lot of rope in hopes of being won over. Next, the guys discuss Carnival of Contagion, a new educational comic from the University of Nebraska Press that's all about vaccination awareness. Illustrated by Bob Hall, and written by him as well (along with John West and Judy Diamond), this is a title that's apparently intended for classroom use. As Paul and Derek reveal, the story may be a little dry -- and even didactic in places -- but it effectively drives home the importance of vaccination not only for individuals, but for our communities as well. Finally, the Two Guys turn to a behemoth of a text, Chris Ware's Monograph (Rizolli). Both Derek and Paul are big fans of Ware's creativity, and they're mesmerized by the sheer beauty and ingenuity contained within this work (which is much more of an art book, and one with autobiographical impulses, than a comic). However, they're a little put off at times by the apologetic tone of the author. Granted, Chris Ware is known for his self-deprecation, where he feels he has to apologize for his comics efforts as an artist. But such a stance can also take on a more self-aggrandizing quality, highlighting the uniqueness -- and the "seriousness" or the high-brow-ness -- of the project and contrasting it to more "common" or mainstream comics. This can also be seen in Art Spiegelman's introduction and his emphasis on "comix." But despite these minor annoyances, the guys are completely taken by this volume and strongly recommend it to not only Chris Ware fans, but to serious comics readers as a whole.

Tess Fowler is an artist with an incredible sense of passion and heart which she pours into every project that she becomes involved in - that can sometimes mean that, for someone who makes sure to guard her privacy and personal space, having her heart on her sleeve in such a public manner can make her vulnerable to the elements. But she gets out there anyway and she faces the storms fearlessly. Which is why there's an initial sense of surprise and then an understandable reasoning why she has accepted the request of her new editor, the legendary Shelly Bond, to brave the crowds and bedlam of San Diego Comic-Con, an entity which has over the years evolved into a sanity-devouring beast of its own. Bond has set up BLACK CROWN PUBLISHING, a new imprint of IDW Publishing, and Fowler is the artist on the book first out of the gate for Black Crown: KID LOBOTOMY, written by the equally legendary - and creativity intimidating - Peter Milligan. BLACK CROWN is a unique space in comics in that the books that come from the imprint will all exist in a defined world, centred around the Black Crown Pub, a venue where I suspect requests for a glass of water or orange juice will be dismissed with much scorn from the ornately-inked bar staff, and Little Mix will not be featuring on the battered but beloved vintage jukebox. I caught up with Tess Fowler on the last day of San Diego Comic-Con to talk primarily about KID LOBOTOMY, but the conversation turned, as many about Black Crown do, to the maddening, frustrating, rewarding, uplifting, soul-defining working relationships between Tess and her writer and editor...

A Conversation with Tess Fowler (Thought Bubble Festival, 7th November 2016) On the last day of the convention for the Thought Bubble Sequential Art Festival 2016 (held over the weekend of 6th-7th November), Leonard Sultana was lucky enough to get some time to talk with artist Tess Fowler on her first visit to the UK. Tess is a creative that has inspired massive loyalty from her fans, not only for her artwork (including the cult favourite RAT QUEENS) but also for her highly personal and vocal social media presence. In this conversation, Leonard and Tess talk about her relationship with her fans at conventions and online, and how she balances her output with attending conventions in a busy calendar...
This week James and Nick talk about Marvel's Netflix shows, flip through Previews, and more! It's our longest description yet.
