Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Elias Mallin. Elias is one of my newest favorite people and this chat was fun. He warned me that he'd have a lot of controversial takes and I certainly was not disappointed. Elias is one of THE go-to drummers in LA with a resume that includes Kesha, Filter, Noah Cyrus, Kill Hannah, Hollywood Undead, Julia Michaels, Fear and the Nervous System, and so many more. This chat felt like I was just shooting the sh$t with an old friend and I hope you enjoy the 5 records that helped shaped Elias Mallin into the drummer he is today. On this episode of The Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman interviews legendary rock photographer, Gene Ambo, to discuss his new book that everyone should be stoked to get their hands on! Pipeman and Gene discuss how it came about that he would write a book and why he decided to write the book now. Gene gives us an insight into his book and how there's no fluff or stories it's simply a time-capsule book with 350 pages of pictures and 150 bands, designed to showcase to everyone who wasn't at the live shows how awesome they were. Gene speaks about his favourite picture he's ever taken and how it is a full stage shot of Metallica, right as they're moving into encores, and they had a smoke machine on. Gene talks about how he only had 10 frames of film and that particular shot was one of his last frames, so he was super to lucky to get it and it has turned out to be his favourite shot and one he's known best for. In an interview broadcast live over Facebook, longtime friend of the podcast Mat Devine returns for an hour-long chat. Devine reflects on life after fronting Kill Hannah, detailing the work that went into determining his personal and professional identity after the band came to an end in 2015. Devine also details his current role as Head of Music Partnerships at celebrity video messaging platform Cameo, speaks on the opportunities the platform offers talent, and reveals the parallels between an ambitious tech startup and his own DIY branding efforts in Kill Hannah.
“You don't want the linear. You want the highs and the lows. You want the crashes and the victories. You need that." Mat Devine is the Head of Music Partnerships at Cameo, a social platform where celebrities send paid “shout outs” to their fans. He helps artists join the app. Before Mat spearheaded the musician acquisitions at Cameo, he spent the last 25 years of his life producing albums, touring and making music with his bands Kill Hannah and Wrongchilde. He founded Kill Hannah in the late 90's while attending college in Chicago. He spent 6 years hustling, developing a cult following in Chicago to get signed to a record label. In this episode, we discuss the pivot from being a musician to the tech world and how being an artist prepared Mat for his current role. As a musician himself, he understands the challenges and the ever evolving landscape artists and professionals in the music business need to adapt to. His mission is to continuously connect artists to their fans and help artists with additional nontraditional revenue streams during times like this pandemic. The music industry is dynamic. As music industry professionals, our career paths do not have to be conventional or linear. We have the opportunity to test different routes and discover our passions. It is okay to fail or pivot because then, we can grow as professionals and humans. Bodin got his start like a lot of kids did, woodshedding guitar in his bedroom for hours and playing in local bands. But Bodin had bigger plans. After a stint producing bands such as Kill Hannah and American Jet Set in Chicago, Bodin packed up and moved to Los Angeles with the goal of getting his music on the big screen - and he has succeeded. In addition to his acclaimed film and television scoring work, Bodin has continued to release independent instrumental albums; his most recent is The Radioactive Werewolf and other Tales from the Southwest.
