THE SWIMMER (1968) We dive deep in to The Swimmer and discuss and analyze, maybe just a little bit the glorious film directed by Frank Perry, based on a screenplay by Eleanor Perry, from the 12 page short story by John Cheever. "Well-off ad man Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) is visiting a friend when he notices the abundance of backyard pools that populate their upscale suburb. Ned suddenly decides that he'd like to travel the eight miles back to his own home by simply swimming across every pool in town."If you're reading this I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. Picture the scene: You're a young screenwriter getting your first taste of success — but it's with a movie that didn't quite come out the way you wanted and the victory feels hollow. Suddenly, you find yourself being typecast as a writer of silly comedies while the industry boxes you out and the opportunities and (self)respect begin to slip away. What do you do? If you're Larry Karaszewski (and long time screenwriting partner Scott Alexander) you swerve hard out of that lane and typecast YOURSELF as auteurs of your own re-invented genre: The Anti-Biopic! Out of this savvy strategy the enduring classic ED WOOD is born and you are swept up in Hollywood's warm and loving embrace. Cut to a montage of THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, MAN ON THE MOON, BIG EYES and a lifetime of accolades, happiness and total fulfillment. THE END! On this episode we talk to Larry about going to inappropriate movies at the drive-in with his dad, a college experience that actually paid off, writing PROBLEM CHILD and then watching Robert DeNiro watch it, having a roommate that wrote HEATHERS, resurrecting Frank Perry, producing AUTO FOCUS, David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian, orphan films, Milos Forman, and we pick the best(!!!) New York movies.

Every day, New Yorkers are involuntarily committed to hospitals and mental health facilities for psychiatric treatment. But what happens when a patient wishes to be released from a hospital or refuses medication? In this podcast, we are joined by Hon. W. Frank Perry to discuss Mental Hygiene Proceedings, a little-known area of the law designed to resolve disputes between mental health patients and the facilities responsible for treating them. In this discussion, Judge Perry describes his transition from a Supreme Court Justice in the General Assignment Part to his current role as the sole Judge presiding over Mental Hygiene Proceedings throughout New York County. This open and honest conversation explores Judge Perry's experience with helping people at their most vulnerable moments, the tension between protecting individual rights of patients and ensuring that they are not a threat to themselves or others, and the procedure for carrying this out. We hope that this discussion can shed some light on a legal process that affects thousands of New Yorkers every year. Want to learn more about practice in New York's mental hygiene courts?

Joining the conversation is The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures' Director of Film Programs K.J. Ashley Hoff, author of With Love, Mommie Dearest: The Making of an Unintentional Camp Classic, stops by to dig into how his deep love for this controversial motion picture led to him quite literally writing the book on the subject. Grosse Pointe native and Academy Award-winning actor, J. K. Simmons joins Jason and Dan to discuss his lifelong Tigers fandom. What got him hooked on Detroit baseball as a kid? How does a hard-working thespian with over 200 acting credits manage to watch nearly every Tigers game? Simmons recounts how he based his character Frank Perry in “For Love of the Game,” off former Tigers manager and newly elected Hall of Famer, Jim Leyland. If we compare Simmons's acting career to that of a historic Detroit ballplayer, who would he be? We also learn about J. K.'s youthful operatic ambitions, what it's like to play a sociopath, and the beauty of baseball and acting as team sports.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. The Blind Rage podcast: Horror Movie Commentaries

“I'D RATHER YOU GO BALD TO SCHOOL THAN LOOKING LIKE A TRAMP!” Mr. Tony the Tiger a.k.a. Daddie Dearest, it seems, was determined to ruin this week's episode of The Blind Rage Podcast. First, he smacked me upside the head with a hairbrush—TWICE. Then, he tried to force gallons of Pepsi down my throat. And as if all that wasn't bad enough, he received a delivery from Bear Daddy Bungalow in the middle of the commentary! As if you couldn't tell, we're focused on Frank Perry's MOMMIE DEAREST, considered by many critics to be one of the worst movies ever made, and by gay audiences to be one of the most compulsively watchable, not to mention endlessly quotable, gems of the previous century. Join us as we watch Faye Dunaway swallow the scenery whole, co-stars and all, in this enduring cult classic! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/blindragepod/message

Red Collar Killers: The Hidden Violence of White Collar Crimes Can white-collar criminals be driven to murder?  In this episode of PRETEND, we explore 'Red Collar Criminals,' a term coined by attorney, CPA, and Certified Fraud Examiner Frank Perry. Perry defines red-collar criminals as white-collar offenders who turn to violence to hide their frauds.  We investigate the psychology and patterns common among these criminals, revealing how ordinary financial crimes can escalate into brutal acts of violence. By examining various cases, this episode paints a vivid picture of the dangerous and often unnoticed overlap between deceit and murder. Great American Novel Podcast 24 considers Joan Didion's 1970 novel Play It as It Lays, which shut the door on the 60s and sped down the freeway into the 70s, eyes on the rearview mirror all the while.  In a wide-ranging discussion which touches not only upon Didion and her screenwriter husband but also John Wayne, Ernest Hemingway, the Manson cult, the Mamas and the Papas and Lloyd Cole and the Commotions, we drive down the interstate with Didion and her Corvette as we consider Hollywood, Las Vegas, the desert, Hippies and Hipsters, and the legacy of the 1960s.  As always, listeners are warned, there be spoilers here. The Great American Novel podcast is an ongoing discussion about the novels we hold up as significant achievements in our American literary culture.  Additionally, we sometimes suggest novels who should break into the sometimes problematical canon and at other times we'll suggest books which can be dropped from such lofty consideration.  Your hosts are Kirk Curnutt and Scott Yarbrough, professors with little time and less sense who nonetheless enjoy a good book banter.  All opinions are their own and do not reflect the points of view of their employers, publishers, relatives, pets, or accountants. Intro and outro music is by Lobo Loco.  The intro song is “Old Ralley,” and the outro is “Inspector Invisible.”  For more information visit: https://locolobomusic.com/.  Clip from the trailer for the film Play It As It Lays, dir. 1972 by Frank Perry, monologue spoken by Tuesday Weld, written by Didion and John Gregory Dunne.  Excerpt from “Rattlesnakes” by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions, on the album Rattlesnakes, 1984 Polydor/Geffen, prod. Book Vs. Movie: The SwimmerThe 1964 John Cheever story vs. the 1968 Burt Lancaster FilmBurt Lancaster always claimed that his 1968 film The Swimmer was his best work, and we are here to show you exactly why! The John Cheever short story that appeared in the July 18, 1964 issue of The New Yorker is a surrealistic tale of an alcoholic man (Neddy Merrill) who journeys to his home through suburban New York via swimming pools. Along the way, he realizes that the life he thinks he is leading (high status with a beautiful family) is actually in shambles, and he is, in fact, alone and broke. The 1968 film is a masterclass of acting and direction, which is ironic considering the shoot was chaotic, with the firing of several actors and the director, Frank Perry, during the shoot. With a 24-year-old Marvin Hamlisch soundtrack, cameos from Joan Rivers and Janet Landgard, and Lancaster in a blue swimsuit showing off his 52-year-old body--the film was not well-received at the time by the press or at the box office. Since then, it has gained a cult following with a look at what small-budgeted movies coming soon in the 1970s. What are the main differences between the short story and the film? Which version did the Margos like better? Have a listen! In this ep, the Margos discuss:John Cheever's writing career and aestheticThe troubled production of the filmThe cast of the 1968 film: Burt Lancaster (Ned Merrill,) Janet Landgard (Julie Ann Hooper,) Janice Rule (Shirley Abbott,) Joan Rivers (Joan,) Kim Hunter (Betty,) Tony Bickley (Donald,) Marge Champion (Peggy,) Bill Fiore (Howie,) Rose Gregio (Sylvia,) Charles Drake (Howard Graham,) Diana Muldaur (Cynthia,) and Dolph Sweet as Henry Biswanger.Clips used:“That's my wagon” opening sceneThe Swimmer (1968 trailer)Neddie opening sceneJulie and NedJoan Rivers!!!Ned and his mistressNed at the public parkMusic by Marvin HamlischBook Vs. It was the kind of British day where people lounge around complaining about how hot it ought to be. A drizzly, melancholy kind of day that stretched endlessly before those unfortunate enough to be on its receiving end. "I drank too much last night!" Barry Spudmen grumbled into his cold chips, the pebbly beach pulsating beneath his be-sandaled feet. "We all drank too much last night" offered his estranged live-in former husband. Ned Merill, desperately counting fag ends, looked windward and considered a long, elegiac journey back to his home in Derby, ultimately deciding against it. Glumly returning to his fag ends he mumbles "I'm gonna drink so much tonight..." Featuring: A discussion of Frank Perry's 1968 film The Swimmer and the source material upon which it was based; a short story by John Cheever. The discussion is conducted by two grown men named Paul and lasts for 75 minutes.  More Pauls! https://facebook.com/ogtpod https://twitter.com/ogtpod We have a Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/ogtpod – sign up for exclusive content for as little as $1 a month. Scott Gairdner (Podcast: The Ride) returns to discuss the biographical drama MOMMIE DEAREST starring Faye Dunaway, Diana Scarwid and Mara Hobel. Frank Perry directed this adaptation of Christina Crawford's eponymous memoir which portrays Crawford's adoptive mother, Hollywood actress Joan Crawford, as unstable and abusive. Featuring a legendary lead performance by Dunaway as Joan Crawford, MOMMIE DEAREST opened in 1981 to such scathing reviews, Paramount Pictures quickly altered the film's ad campaign to market the film as high camp. In the following years, the film gained a cult following as an unintentional comedy and queer classic, but how will it fare when viewed through MNAM's modern parenting perspective? You won't want to miss this, the Mother of all MOMMIE DEAREST discussions, with diversions into The Room, John Waters, Showgirls, The Joker, vaping, Chris Rock, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and much much more!

Jack and Joe are joined by Dr. Becca Hayes (scientist, Pittsburgh improv comedian, and Joe's partner) to talk about the wildly troubling, weirdly campy, and terrifyingly not-supposed-to-be-funny Mommie Dearest (1981), winner of the second-ever Razzie Award for Worst Picture. But we don't just tackle the film -- Jack directly compares it to the memoir it's based on to highlight the differences between these accounts of Joan Crawford's problematic parenting. We dig into the life-threateningly glaring omissions, reminisce on Cabbage Patch dolls and other childhood toys, somehow manage to reference the Simpsons and F. Scott Fitzgerald multiple times, and accidentally provide Jack with a therapy session regarding narcissism and parenting through a conversation on the Internet with ACTUAL NUANCE! Also, in a DeRazzled first, we get an alternative fix for this movie from our guest! Pour yourself a Pepsi, throw out your wire hangers, and awkwardly strap yourself into bed as you enjoy this one. On this episode of Death By DVD we've gone on holiday by mistake. The 1987 British black comedy WITHNAIL & I is discussed at length! Possibly the quintessential British movie, join THE Linus Fitness-Centre & Harry-Scott as they pour a shot of lighter fluid and get into the politics of WITHNAIL & I. Two out-of-work actors -- the anxious, luckless Marwood (Paul McGann) and his acerbic, alcoholic friend, Withnail (Richard E. Grant) -- spend their days drifting between their squalid flat, the unemployment office and the pub. When they take a holiday "by mistake" at the country house of Withnail's flamboyantly gay uncle, Monty (Richard Griffiths), they encounter the unpleasant side of the English countryside: tedium, terrifying locals and torrential rain. This is an episode you DON'T wanna miss! And remember all hairdressers are in the employment of the government. Hair are your aerials. They pick up signals from the cosmos and transmit them directly into the brain. This is the reason bald-headed men are uptight.HEY, while you're still here.. have you heard...DEATH BY DVD PRESENTS : WHO SHOT HANK? The first of its kind (On this show, at least) an all original narrative audio drama exploring the murder of this shows very host, HANK THE WORLDS GREATEST!
