In this heartfelt solo episode, I (Steph) reflect on the struggles of self-doubt, perfectionism, and how they impact the creative process. Tune in to explore: Why self-compassion matters in creativity. How practicing conversations can be a skill-building exercise. The importance of showing up authentically, even when things aren't perfect. Why living intentionally is the ultimate art form. This episode is a love letter to anyone who has ever doubted themselves but kept going anyway. Let's collaborate on creating the most beautiful masterpiece of all—our lives.
In this episode, we delve into the creative world of Thomas Hicks, a rising multidisciplinary artist who seamlessly blends photography, mixed media, and sculpture. Through his work, Thomas demonstrates that art is an ever-evolving conversation—one where reuse, remixing, and reimagining old ideas lead to new stories. Building on themes introduced by our first guest, Ty Davis, we see how generational shifts have reshaped how artists approach their craft. Where Ty once felt a tinge of shame for painting over an old piece, Thomas boldly reuses and reinterprets materials without hesitation—reflecting how younger generations embrace art as a fluid, living process. We explore: How Gothic art, vintage photography, and found materials inspire Thomas's creations. The power of reworking and remixing, challenging traditional notions of "finished" art. His evolving creative process and its intersection with themes of preservation and decay. Why art history is both a guide and a starting point for innovation. Thomas's perspective invites us to let go of old stigmas and embrace the infinite possibilities that come from reworking what we already have. Thomas Hicks is a multidisciplinary artist from Greenville, South Carolina, currently completing his senior year at the College of Charleston. His work draws on themes of connection, spirituality, and transformation, using materials like vintage photography, textiles, and pastels. Thomas has exhibited at Redux Contemporary Art Center, the Halsey Institute's Young Contemporaries, and beyond, crafting art that reimagines the past for the future. In the very first episode of the Sus Art Club Podcast, we sit down with Ty Davis, a contemporary abstract expressionist whose creative journey weaves together family legacy, rebellion, and the pursuit of freedom through art. From early days of doodling to mastering portraiture and eventually breaking into abstract expressionism, Ty shares how creativity has been his lifelong companion and how music, spirituality, and mistakes fuel his process. We explore: Ty's creative roots: A jazz musician grandfather and a preacher grandfather who shaped his work ethic and imagination. The transition from realism to abstract art and why breaking the "rules" is essential for growth. How music, especially jazz, becomes a gateway to his creative flow. The intersection of spirituality and art, and Ty's upcoming show, Threads of the Divine. The importance of persistence, evolving as an artist, and celebrating moments of success—like his recent acceptance into ArtFields. Ty's story is a reminder that everything—life, art, spirituality—is connected, and it's up to us to explore it with intention and curiosity. Ty Davis is a contemporary abstract expressionist whose vivid, dynamic art blends unorthodox techniques with deeply emotional narratives. Drawing inspiration from his musical roots and family legacy, Ty's work explores freedom, spirituality, and the infinite possibilities of creative expression. "Creative Moxie" is your podcast host, Steph, here to reconnect with everyone who's been part of this incredible journey. Born out of the pandemic's chaos in 2020, my desire to contribute creatively led me to start this podcast. I began by sharing my love for books, notably "The Four Agreements," which resonated deeply due to my Mexican American heritage. From those roots, the podcast evolved, featuring engaging conversations with fellow creatives, sparking deep insights and learning. The podcast's pace accelerated in 2021 as my art career soared. I curated 20 art shows, participated in six, and juggled creative consulting and commercial art. But burnout forced a 2022 podcast hiatus, during which I analyzed my habits through the Mindfully Creative process, ultimately revamping the podcast's direction. This season introduces three episode types: interviews, reflections, and integrations, the latter being exclusive content initially. Listener support and feedback will guide its development. "Creative Moxie" celebrates our artistic essence and choices, advocating for decisions based on love over fear. From returning guest Connor Locke to future interviews, reflections, and integrations, the podcast weaves together creativity, habits, and the art of living. Join me for a journey that honors both chaos and love, artistry, and life's transformative power. During this episode, you will hear me speak about the book : Atomic Habits by James Clear. My experience on how this book basically changed my life and the story of how it continues to do so is held in these episodes. I tiled this episode Dividends of Devotion, because I have been exploring this concept for a long time now. This episode was recorded the winter of 2021. It is being posted at the end of Summer 2022. Wow. What happened? Why did I wait so long? I was busy living. After recording this episode, I went into a VERY DEEP DIVE, soon I committed all of myself to this endeavor by booking an art show for the end of Summer 2022. this show was to encapsulate all the feelings, stories, lessons , wisdom etc... of this journey. That is what art is to me. What I choose Wholeheartedly devoted to it love of the journey so deep the destination is just a game target to get out there and put in the beautiful work. Anyway, the show " Dividends of Devotion" by @rabidlegion, is on show at REDUX Contemporary Art Center in Charleston SC; from July 26 to September 10th 2022. Im posting this podcast now because, I?T IS so relevant AND I forgot that it was even made! lol I was actually logging on here to tell you 2 cool new things. 1- While I was away, I started a podcast with my friend Marguerite, The podcast is called : THE COSMIC AFFAIR . On this episode we back with the ABC ( Anonymous Book Club ) This episode I share from the book : Atomic Habits by James Clear. This book is important to me because I have struggled to break up with bad habits in the past. I had a strict / forced relationship with discipline when I was young. #nohate However because of that, when I was a teenager I swung so far the other way and became a Toxic Rebel. I would rebel in such an explosive and aggressive way sometimes, that reaction would hurt me more than whatever I was being subjected to. #rebelwithoutacause . Anyhow, something that got me scared straight and into this gem of a book, was when I noticed my health taking a big hit due to my “bad habits” . This book has helped me rebuild the trustworthiness within myself, in the easiest way I've ever experienced.
