What role can the arts play in shaping scientific expression? How can scientists and artists better work together to share their insights with the general public? We sit down with Smitha Vishveshwara, a theoretical physicist, and Benny Starr, a hip-hop artist and activist, to discuss these thorny questions. In the process, we explore their creative journeys and the need for an artistic (and scientific!)  process that incorporates authenticity, courage, and collaborative curiosity. “The Joy of Regathering” premiered on September 17, 2022 at the University of Illinois' Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. This original work explores who we are at all scales  - from the microscopic to the cosmic – through the lens of science, music, and movement. Starr served as the inaugural Artist-in-Residence for the U.S. Water Alliance. His work “A Water Album” was recorded live in Charleston, South Carolina in 2018. The music reflects the life-bringing force of water and the existential threat that climate change poses to this flood-prone part of the world. Today's headlines: A second Floyd County Schools employee tests positive for coronavirus. This person serves both Alto Park Elementary and Cave Spring Elementary; is now in self-quarantine. The employee "may have come into contact with teachers and students while in attendance at the fifth grade FCS Quiz Bowl event last Tuesday at the Krannert Center at Berry College." Changes: Great timing for pop-up farmers market. Jandy’s closes temporarily as does LakePoint Station in Emerson. ATMs with more $$. Restaurant delays grand opening; Crawdaddy's pickup only; corned beef, growlers to go. Closings: Floyd Schools, Polk schools to take even longer breaks. Catholic churches cancel public Masses through April 4-5. Today's other news: A 2-year-old Rome boy was killed in a rear-end collision in Blue Ridge late Sunday; two others are recovering. Health: Three of four floors at the 330 Physicians Center open for lease; 59,000 square feet in all. RANT OF THE DAY: A decision on indecision In recent weeks, we’ve seen people in leadership positions failing to do what they’re supposed to do in the first place: make decisions. We realize the corona virus is something we never really expected – but that’s not an excuse to watch and wait. The first example came hours before Floyd County’s first positive test was announced. Elected, health and other officials were in stall mode, some openly speculating it would never happen here even as data poured in from China and Italy. Twelve hours later, all were packed in a room at the emergency center, speculating on what happens next. Today, we’re among one of the state’s hot beds for positive tests. What’s troubling is that some are still taking time – time we don’t have if we want to “flatten the curve” – to make decisions. Public institutions, private operations, gathering places prone to crowds of 50 or more – there seems to be a geniune fear of making the call. The demands of leadership include exactly that: lead. Make the tough call that might be unpopular but also is more than necessary. If you can’t, move aside and let the true leaders lead. Treating the corona virus outbreak as a new threat is the wrong approach. Northwest Georgia was two weeks into “community spread” by the time the first positive test was announced. There are some very tough decisions to make, decisions that should have occurred last week. From Athens, Ga., to New York City to Miami Beach, people are doing what needs to be done. Here’s hoping the leaders here indeed decide to lead today. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-druckenmiller/support

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

This month's episode comes to you live from the Ellnora Guitar Festival at the Krannert Center in Champaign, Illinois and features the incredible Molly Tuttle. Molly and I were both performing at the festival recently and they asked me to do a live podcast, which I was thrilled to do, and had been trying to get Molly on the show for months anyway! Molly is at the forefront of young songwriters and pickers in Nashville, and I consider her to be one of the great new group of players that are writing and performing at an incredible level at a young age. Molly's songwriting is adventurous and wide-ranging, while her guitar playing is firmly rooted in the bluegrass tradition. The mix is compelling and exciting to hear, and is on display on her incredible new album "When You're Ready". She has been awarded the prestigious IBMA Guitar Player of the Year Award a couple of times already, as well as Instrumentalist of the Year by the Americana Music Association. Molly joined me on stage and we got to talk about her influences, her guitar style, and her recording process on her recent EP and the new album. We were confined a bit by time with the live aspect of the episode, but we crammed in what we could! Molly was also kind enough to bring her guitar along and show me some of the styles and influences we talk about, as well as performing a couple of tunes. Enjoy my conversation with Molly Tuttle, and be sure to subscribe and review us on Apple Podcasts!

Catalin Rotaru has just released a new album titled The Lord of The Basses.  This album features Catalin performing on Bottesini's famous 300-year-old Testore bass.  Catalin has also released another project this fall titled Sonic Bridges Vol. 2. About Catalin Rotaru: Catalin Rotaru was born in Moldova, a province in the far northeast of Romania, in the same region where Romania's most celebrated composer, George Enescu was born. Leaving home at the age of 11 and settling in the city of Botosani, he began his musical studies directly with the double bass. After only one year he transferred to one of the leading music schools in Bucharest, the G. Enescu Arts Lyceum. Upon his graduation he was admitted to the Conservatory, a great accomplishment, since at the time, only one bass player was admitted each year. As part of the admission process, he had to pass 5 exams: 3 instrumental - recital, technical proficiency, sight-reading and 2 theoretical - dictation, pure theory and solfeggio. His most influential teacher there was Ion Cheptea, a direct disciple of Joseph Prunner, an eminent bassist and visionary from Austria, who moved to Bucharest at the beginning of the 20th century and established at the conservatory one of the most distinguished schools of double bass. Immediately upon graduation, he was offered a position with the Sibiu State Philharmonic, a major orchestra in Transylvania. Three years later he became associate principal with the Romanian National Radio Symphony in Bucharest. While still in Romania Catalin served as principal with the Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra of Bucharest and Orchestra Sinfonica Europea, with which he toured extensively throughout Europe. In 1995 he emigrated to the U.S. after being offered a teaching assistantship at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he also obtained a Master's Degree in music performance. He has also served as Associate Professor of Double Bass and Jazz Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and taught at Millikin University in Decatur Illinois before joining the faculty of the School of Music at Arizona State University, in 2005. Since his arrival in the U.S. Catalin has been the recipient of many prestigious awards.
