The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
Hosted by Dr. Jacinta Delhaize & Dr. Daniel Cunnama. A powerful, naturally occurring “space laser”, called a megamaser, has been discovered with South Africa's MeerKAT radio telescope in a galaxy nearly five billion light-years away. This is the most distant such megamaser found so far, and was probably forged in the collision of two galaxies. The megamaser has been nicknamed “Nkalakatha,” meaning “big boss” in isiZulu. A maser is just like a laser but in radio waves instead of visible light. When galaxies (like our own Milky Way) collide, this can create extremely bright masers, called megamasers. The maser light comes from hydroxyl molecules inside extremely dense clouds of interstellar gas. We are joined by Associate Professor Sarah Blyth from the University of Cape Town who is one of the principal investigators for the LADUMA survey. The Looking at the Distant Universe with the Meerkat Array (LADUMA) team leads one of the big MeerKAT science experiments, which is looking for neutral hydrogen gas in galaxies in one area of the sky, and looking for it very deeply. We also speak with the lead researcher Dr. Marcin Glowacki, previously a researcher at the Inter-University Institute for Data-Intensive Astronomy (IDIA) and University of the Western Cape, and now based at the Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR). The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.
It's the first episode with American guests - and the first one with three of them. For this episode of The Assistant Professor of Football, I am joined by three (real) professors who regularly teach, in American university classrooms, about football - its culture, its meaning, its history. We talked about how that teaching is going, what would it be like to take a class with them, what do they assign, and how did they get into this subject in academia in the first place, and what good books are being written about the beautiful game beyond the well-known popular ones. And then we went on to opine more broadly, about the future of the game globally as well as here in the US, the next World Cup, why awful people run clubs, and what makes the beautiful game such a unique angle to understand the world. These guests are: - Dr. Brenda Elsey (Hofstra University, History Department), co-editor of Football and the Boundaries of History: Critical Studies in Soccer (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017) and author of Futbolera: A History of Women and Sports in Latin America (University of Texas Press, 2019)- Dr. Peter Alegi (Michigan State University, Department of History), author of African Soccerscapes: How a Continent Changed the World's Game (Ohio University Press, 2010) and Laduma! Soccer, Politics and Society in South Africa (University of KawZulu-Natal Press, 2004); founder of The Football Scholars Forum- Dr. Pablo M. Sierra (University of Rochester, Department of History), author of Urban Slavery in Colonial Mexico: Puebla de los Ángeles, 1531-1706 (Cambridge Press, 2018)Please leave a quick voicemail with any feedback, corrections, suggestions - or just greetings - HERE. Or comment via Twitter, Instagram, Bluesky or Facebook. f you enjoy this podcast and think that what I do fills a gap in soccer coverage that others would be interested in as well, please Recommend The Assistant Professor of Football. Spreading the word, through word of mouth, truly does help. Leave some rating stars at the podcast platform of your choice. There are so many sports podcasts out there, and only ratings make this project visible; only then can people who look for a different kind of take on European soccer actually find me. Host Carl Lewis chats with the team at Laduma Analytics as they chat statistics and data in the DSTV Premiership. In this week's episode, they focus on Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, Amazulu and Bafana Bafana. Goals Goals are lacking again - why is that? Big difference in the total number of expected goals (140) vs approx 121 goals. Games are creating good quality chances - 2.15 expected goals per game but games are only just under 2 goals a game. Which teams are creating well but struggling to score? Sundowns A game for the goalkeepers, with this week being an International week Themba Zwane had a great opportunity to score 0.25 xG = a more clinical Zwane on his day would have converted that Sundowns vs AmaZulu game stats 17 shots - the second highest total of shots taken this 2022/23 season. 2.3 xG - the second highest total of xG accumulated this 2022/23 season. 9 - the highest number of chances in games this season. 20 opposition box entrances on average - next best team CT City with 16 entrances into Opp box Allende sees Mothwa and the gap at the near post Reminded me of Van Persie against Barcelona Maicon for Brazil against North Korea at the 2010 FIFA world cup @ Ellis Park? AmaZulu Where to start? Fantastic off-season with lots of quality players coming in Also losing players. A really strong start to the season - 3 wins out of first 4 games but the underlying data was never strong and indicated differently to how they were positioned on the log prior to the MTN 8 break (see below) That followed suit and performances caught up with results Never been overly strong this season in creating good quality chances, currently 12th on log for xG Early season - 7 goals from 3.73 xG & 1 goal from 3.63 xG Up and down with chance creation and got results when ultimately (based on probability) may not have deserved them - SuperSport United & CT City in the league. Played well very good against 8th on the log for shots taken - 10 shots 84 shots - 47 inside box / 37 outside bo 13th for shots on target - 30% 12th for xG - 0.92 xG Kaizer Chiefs A win against SuperSport - very much needed but a very poor opening 15-20 minutes. 7 goals in 8 games (0.88 goals per game) 12 xG in 8 games (1.5 xG per game - 5th on log) Most teams with penalties 4 penalties & 2 goals scored from penalties 9 xG when we remove 4 penalties that they have had (1.13 xG per game - 10th) They went through a similar problem exactly 11 months ago and at the time also had a poor conversion rate of their chances at 13%, now it is 19%, league average is 4% Bafana Bafana talk Mashego to Sundowns / Ndumiso Mabena to Pirates rumours / Dan Masela to Marumo Gallants Lakay / Modiba / Mashego all at one club Players suffer but so does the national team Shame that it will only be friendlies Squad looks exciting

Host Carl Lewis chats to the team at Laduma Analytics about Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, CHippa United and Iqraam Rayners.
Host Carl Lewis is back with the team of Laduma Analytics and we discuss the XG data which tells which teams have been playing well and which not. Expected Goals & Goal Difference Is Gavin Hunt a critic of data & data-driven performance analysis? Or are journalists driving a narrative? His recent quotes (as always) were interesting "I thought we had the best chances, I mean really two good chances which I thought we should have scored. It's fairly disappointing but that has been the story of us" Well data back up his claims Supersport have experienced the worst of luck in front of goal (offensively and defensively). Their goal difference is currently minus two, when +5 is what they should have had [8xG -3xG] City has not had the rub of the green. Defence is par (7xGA and 8 conceded) Their front line has underperformed by 4 goals - 10xG yielding just 6 goals Sundowns have an xGD of +2, but an Actual GD of +8. This is because they conceded a high quality of chances and should have conceded 5 goals by now. Chippa & AmaZulu are main concerns, Richards Bay & TS Galaxy also in danger It's a miracle TS Galaxy haven't conceded, with 6xG conceded (effectively Buthelezi has saved the team 6 goals) Expected Points Table [10 mins] Based on xP City, Pirates, Maritzburg & Sundowns should be our top 4 Based on xP AmaZulu, Chippa, HGalaxy, Richards Bay should be Bottom 4 Going forward, we expect the league table to shake up again and be rearranged. 5 teams have topped table this season (last time there were more was 17/18). All things remaining the same, Maritzburg, Supersport and City should climb ⏫ AmaZulu and Richards Bay will go in the opposite direction.⏬
Host Carl Lewis and the LAduma Analytics teams take a much closer look at two games from the past weekend. Having seen Sundowns blow Chiefs away, Orlando Pirates could not take advantage against Chippa, missing out on the chance to go level on points with three other table toppers. As usual, we dig beyond the score lines to look at some of the numbers that may not have seen the public eye. We cover: Kaizer Chiefs v Mamelodi Sundowns Orlando Pirates v Chippa Utd Cape Town City
Host Carl Lewis is joined by the Laduma Analytics team to discuss the opening two rounds of the DSTV Premiership. We take a statistical look at the data and what it tells us about the teams in the Premier Soccer League.
Host Carl Lewis is joined by Alex from the team at Laduma Analytics as they discuss some of the most interesting statistical anomalies from the past DSTV Premiership season.
Back with the team at Laduma Analytics as we dissect, crunch the numbers and analyse South Africa's AFCON 2023 Qualifier loss against Morocco. Bafana lost 2-1 away from home, but what do the stats say about their performance and Hugo Broos tactics?
The DSTV Premiership season is complete and we sit down with the team at Laduma Analytics and select a team of the season using data and statistics. Familiar names like Andile Jali and Peter Shlulile are in...but there are some surprises.
We are back with the Laduma Analytics team with another episode focusing on the PSL and the DSTV Premiership. we focus on: 1. Pirates losing another Cup final - Pirates 1.49xG v RSB 0.28xG 2. PSL Weekend - Sundowns broken records 3. Baroka relegation - They've never finished a season with a positive goal difference 4. CAF places & permutations - Pirates record against the Top 8 sides: P13 W2 D7 L4; Royal AM record against the Top 8 sides: P13 W3 D7 L3; Supersport record against the Top 8 sides: P15 W5 D4 L6 [51% of their points come from Top half matches).
We have another episode with the team at Laduma Analytics. 1. Quick discussion on Sundowns v Stellies game, in which Masandawna lost 3-0 but let's go into the stats. 2. Pirates into Confed final and three games left and how that could change log positions 3. Impressive young players in the PSL 4. Coach & Player of the Month
We are back with the team at Laduma Analytics and OptaJabu and we discuss the record breaking season of Mamelodi Sundowns. What records have Masandawana broken and what can they still break? Also, we go find depth into the lack of goals this season which could potentially be the lowest scoring season of all-time in the DSTV Premiership. We touch on goalkeepers and strikers. A must listen for out stats and data people.
In our second podcast with the Laduma Analytics team, we once again take a deep dive into Kaizer Chiefs after news of their termination of head coach Stuart Baxter's contract filters out. We discuss Baxter's second tenure and compare his record to his predecessors using xG and other metrics, surprisingly, Chiefs create a lot of chances. We also look at the DSTV Premiership's most creative players and once again the Kaizer Chiefs players come out tops in terms of creativity.
In our first episode with the team from Laduma Analytics & OptaJabu, we dive into stats and data from the DSTV Premiership. We cover: - What makes Peter Shalulile so good? - What makes Mamelodi Sundowns so good? - Are we being too hard on Baxter? Analysis Kaizer Chiefs this season - What kind of a team are Orlando Pirates? What does the data say?
We spoke to Peter Alegi is an associate professor of history at Michigan State University and the author of Laduma! Soccer, Politics, and Society in South Africa.

Laduma Ngxokolo is a South African textile and knitwear designer, best known for his knitwear designs inspired by traditional Xhosa beadwork and aesthetic. As a young boy, Laduma loved the sense of charisma that Xhosa initiates exuded after their initiation, and he daydreamed about becoming an initiate himself. Born to an attentive loving resourceful mother who was a knitwear designer, his destiny was forged in these two influences. His thesis for his BTech degree was titled: how can traditional Xhosa aesthetics be interpreted into contemporary knitwear for Xhosa initiates? He has gone on to create a design house which embodies pride and luxury. Today Laduma is one of Africa's finest knitwear designers & innovators creating pieces that are coveted across the world. His interiority is on full display. His work is more than design, it’s more than a feeling, it’s what his designs allow us to know. I caught up with Laduma at his lively office as the day was winding down.

Dan Rutstein is president of Laduma. The company helps global brands such as HSBC, NFL and Samsung to incorporate VR technology and provide opportunities for growth. A former journalist, he also spent 12 years as a diplomat for the department of international trade promoting British businesses on the US west coast, which is where he is now based. He joined the company in 2018, and is responsible for leading global growth. In this in-depth conversation, Dan discusses how virtual reality has progressed from headsets and gaming to training heart surgeons, describes how working for the government has taught him significant life skills from leadership to value for money, and argues that building business relationships in America is easier with the “gravitas” that comes with a British accent.
Laduma Ngxokolo started Maxhosa in 2011. Six years later, with lines for men and women, his creations are stocked all over the world: Cape Town, Johannesburg, London, Tokyo, Amsterdam. The inspiration for the brand came from Laduma’s own cultural tradition - from a desire to make high quality, beautiful knitwear for Xhosa initiates, who give away all their belongings before a coming of age initiation (between the ages of 18-25) that marks their transition from boyhood to manhood. Having been through the process himself, he's well-versed in the history and symbolism of the rituals. Maxhosa is home grown. Laduma produces his knitwear entirely in South Africa, with raw material (mostly woolen mohair) from Port Elizabeth. “We have the biggest mohair industry in the world and the biggest wool industry in Africa,” he says. “So I take advantage of those resources to come up with products that are premium, produced locally and yet relevant to the local market and to the people who visit South Africa.” Website: https://www.globetrottermag.com Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/globetrotterlab Facebook: www.facebook.com/globetrotterlab
I believe as Africans we need to learn the lesson of Self-Love / Self-Validation for who we are and all that we are capable of doing. We are not the starving children with fleas on us, we are not the black people with no hope and no future and most definitely we are not the “dark continent” We are: - Black coffee - Laduma of Maxhosa - Siya Beyile - Nomzamo Mbatha - Mme Esther Mahlangu - Lebohang Masango - Trevor Stuurman and many more These are just a few examples of individuals who have understood being in a place of self-validation and self -love to have enough confidence and courage to go out and tell the true and real African stories.
Laduma has really pushed the boundary in fashion and level of creation, and has become an example of what can happen when we as africans see ourselves greater then the picture that is painted of us. Basically to play part in repainting this image! And that is why I think he is one of the highest level of creatives in South Africa
