Little Scream is the stage name of American-born, Montreal-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumental musician and artist, Laurel Sprengelmeyer. Gregg and Tim spent time talking with Laurel in February 2021 on a number of subjects including the impact of Covid on her work, the true story behind one of her songs, her love of visual media, and more.
So outstanding to have Laurel on the show this week. Many thanks to her for her time and her vulnerability. Laurel's latest album as Little Scream came out on Merge Records last fall. It's is called Speed Queen and it's fantastic. Check out the video for Dear Leader and tell me Laurel hasn't achieved her goal of making political art. While you're at it, you might want to listen to the final, recorded version of the Heron and the Fox which came out on the first Little Scream album The Golden Record. I think it's remarkable to hear the difference between the "skype-mic'd" demo and the final, lushly-produced (but still intimate) version. Thanks again to Laurel and Third Side Music for permission to use the demo.I'm going to fail miserably if I attempt to say anything new about the genius that is Patti Smith and her 1975 debut Horses. It's a landmark how about I stop at that? That said, I was pleased to read that Laurel's song pick from Horses, Birdland was based A Book of Dreams a childhood memoir of radical Austrian psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich which was also the inspiration for my favourite Kate Bush song Cloudbusting. As always, I'd encourage you to listen to the whole track either before or after you listen to this weeks show (or both!) Even if Katie is glad she never has to do it again... Make sure you follow The Volume Knob on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at our website volumeknob.net.And if you have a story about the song that saved your life be sure to send it to me at volumeknobpod@gmail.com.
In this second interview episode, Claire talks with Laurel Sprengelmeyer, musician and visual artist (aka Little Scream), about her journey from a childhood in the Jehovah’s Witnesses to her life now as an artist and Tibetan Buddhist. Laurel shares the process of exploring the arts and other interests she’d neglected growing up and her eventual connection with a very different spiritual tradition. Andrew couldn't join in this week, so Emily called up her friend Jim Bryson, a prize-winning Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, and producer! Some names of note Jim has worked with include Oh Susanna, Little Scream, The Skydiggers and Kalle Mattson. He's toured with Kathleen Edwards, The Weakerthans and The Tragically Hip. To kick it off Jim makes up ideas about what religion Andrew is (imagining he's his favorite kind of religion) and spends a lot of time and energy sounding as good as possible on the podcast. They talk about Guild Starfires, Fender Starcasters, building a custom Jazzmaster one part at a time, and the kinda-guitar kinda-mandocello Emily loaned to Jim. Emily talks about the progress she's making on her custom mustang/bronco hybrid. Big ups to Sean Arbow from Gunstreet Wiring for helping Emily with that! Emily gets Tanya Donelly confused with Juliana Hatfield and may never recover from the embarrassment. They spend probably too much time converting temperature between metric and imperial. They also mention toasted ravioli. Oh yeah, Jim also discusses his late cat's love of licking noses and its sort of inappropriate name. This week's episode is sponsored by Wrist Grips! Wrist Grips are compression wrist warps designed for musicians with wrist pain (like Jim and Emily). Have opinions on things? Join our Facebook group and become part of the conversation! The Mt. Hood fuzz pedal by Spruce Effects is now available! There will only be 10 ever sold in pink, so don’t wait too long to buy. The Mt. Hood has its humble beginnings as the first ever series of Big Muff, the Triangle version. We ditched the tone control for a passive 3 band eq tone stack, added a presence control after the last gain stage for more tone shaping, put a footswitchable Germanium boost with gain and tone controls, and a diode switch to add an extra order of magnitude of tonal options.
This weeks episode is with one of the best known stats guys in DOTA, Noxville. We did a deep dive into the use of statistics in DOTA, and why it's not a perfect science, the issues with China, and talked about why it's hard for DOTA to have a dominant team, among other subjects. The intro song was by Little Scream and the outro song was by The Thermals. Laurel Sprengelmeyer lives in Montreal, she's a visual artist, producer and musician and when she's making music, she's Little Scream. We tell each other ghost stories. For real. It's also the theme of her podcast (soon to be released) and she's going to kill it, like she kills at EVERY DAMN THING SHE DOES because she's amazing. Every little girl needs to be introduced to Laurel. I didn't have a lot of heros growing up and I've talked about it in my show before, there was no woman out there doing what I wanted (read: There WERE, there SUPER FREAKING WERE but there was no way for me to see/hear/experience their incredible talent and see firsthand how I was going to be able to pursue my creative passions to their fulfillment, there was no internet, there was little to no media coverage of women doing anything but starring in tampon ads and hawking mom jeans) and she is living proof not giving a hot damn what people think is an excellent fuel for creativity. She has worked with The National (part of Riverfest 2018!!), Barr Brothers, Saltband and countless others as well. Please go and check her out at www.littlescream.com and follow her on Twitter @littlescream - I'll see you there. Follow me too if you aren't already, I love people!! @stories_podcast and no, I don't have a Facebook page and I make no apologies for that. Love you though, Paula

On the show this week, we’re going spooky; the full Halloween. And can you think of a cooler way to celebrate Halloween than the Voodoo Festival in New Orleans? The lineup is sick, you’re in NEW ORLEANS, and it’ll be warm enough to wear a costume without having to figure out how to incorporate a coat. Check out tunes from the festival with Chairlift, Little Scream, and Bear Hands. Plus other great tunes from the likes of Femi Kuti, Red Kross, and Crystal Stilts. In this Dyson lite episode, a series of dreams forces Bo to once and for all cut ties with "the wolf who shall not be named," as she also comes to terms with the new Ash's hold on Lauren. Mumford the Brownie may, in fact, be our favorite fae of the week which just so happens to be the temporary name of the segment Wayne debuts. But perhaps the biggest revelation of the evening occurred when Wayne admitted to having seen Twilight. Say it ain't so.
