Glengarry Glen Ross is a drama film about real estate salesmen. It doesn't sound that interesting. However, when it's written by David Mamet (The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Untouchables, American Buffalo), directed by James Foley (Fear, Who's That Girl, At Close Range) and starring Jack Lemmon (Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, The China Syndrome), Alec Baldwin (Beetlejuice, The Hunt For Red October, The Boss Baby), Ed Harris (The Truman Show, The Abyss, The Rock), Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine, Edward Scissorhands, Fire Sale), Kevin Spacey (The Usual Suspects, American Beauty, L.A. Confidential), Jonathan Pryce (Brazil, Evita, The Age of Innocence) and Al Pacino (Serpico, The Godfather, Dick Tracy), then it is anything but boring.British film critic Tom Beasley joins the podcast to discuss this 1992 film. Tom talks about his love of swearing in it, how each actor knows when to step aside for another actor to have their moment and why Pacino's performance is so full-on. Movie of the Year: 1971The Panic in Needle ParkWhy Panic in Needle Park Still ResonatesIn this episode of Movie of the Year, Ryan, Greg, and Mike revisit Panic in Needle Park (1971), an unflinching and immersive portrait of addiction, intimacy, and desperation etched into the grit of New York in the 70s. The film's stark realism and emotional rawness turn what might have been exploitation into something astonishingly human — and absolutely unforgettable. The Taste Buds explore how Schatzburg's shots and the fraught dynamics of Bobby and Helen place Panic in Needle Park among the most honest depictions of addiction and dependency in American cinema.SCHATZBURG'S SHOTS: Cinematic Realism Without ArtificeDirector Jerry Schatzberg crafts Panic in Needle Park with a visual language that refuses escape. Rather than offering stylized glamour, Schatzburg's shots are observational and immersive — handheld, close, and relentlessly present. These techniques force viewers into the characters' world, where discomfort isn't cinematic but immediate and visceral. The Taste Buds discuss how Schatzberg uses tight framing, real location shooting, and a documentary-like approach to blur the line between performance and lived experience — making addiction feel as suffocating onscreen as it must in reality.Bobby and Helen and Al: Love, Dependency, and CollapseAt the emotional core of the film lies the complex, destructive relationship of Bobby and Helen. Bobby and Helen's relationship is not romanticized — it's transactional, codependent, and shaped by survival on the margins. Al looms as both enabler and inevitability, a reminder that escape is always temporary.Ryan, Greg, and Mike explore how the film treats love and addiction as mirrors: Bobby and Helen cling not to hope, but to each other because they have nowhere else to turn. The cycle of dependency becomes the story's most heartbreaking theme.New York in the 70s: A City That Sees It AllFew films capture New York in the 70s with the same unvarnished clarity as Panic in Needle Park. The city is at once backdrop and silent character — indifferent, worn, and sprawling. Parks, streets, and subways become interchangeable landscapes of desperation and anonymity. The Taste Buds discuss how Panic in Needle Park uses real locations to root its story in a specific urban moment — a New York fraught with economic hardship, social upheaval, and the grinding anonymity that shapes these lives.Guest Spotlight: Mark Searby — Scholar, Podcaster, and Al Pacino ExpertThis episode features special guest Mark Searby, a seasoned film critic, broadcaster, and author with deep expertise in character-driven cinema. Dancing alongside Pacino in that advert was comedian/writer/actor Andy Goldenberg, who joins the podcast to discuss his experiences of appearing in the film. Goldenberg talks about how he was cast, what it was like acting opposite Sandler and Pacino, and why the reaction to the film hit him very hard. Cruising was a notorious movie upon release. It stoked up a lot of controversy over its footage and themes of homosexuality and violence. It also bombed at the box office and started Pacino's slump for the next few years. It derailed director William Friedkin's career for a couple of years too. However, over the past decade it has started to be re-assessed by film critic and cinephiles.Joining the podcast to discuss the film and it's legacy is film critic and podcaster Dion Baia. Not only does Baia discuss the film and it's themes, but he also talks about a man named Randy Jurgensen, who was instrumental in helping get the film made and worked closely with Friedkin on the film. All About Al: The Pacino Podcast is written, presented and produced by Mark Searby. When Al Pacino became obsessed with Oscar Wilde's Salome, he didn't make it easy on himself when trying to put it on camera. Salome is a filmed version of the stage production that featured Pacino as King Herod and Jessica Chastain (Interstellar, Zero Dark Thirty, IT Chapter Two) as Salome. Wilde Salome is a behind the scenes look at trying to stage the production. While also trying to make a feature film, or at least scenes from the play. Directed by Al Pacino, it took years before it appeared on the festival circuit. And then even longer before it was available to watch at home. To try an unravel what Salome & Wilde Salome is all about is entertainment journalist Emily Murray, who is one of the few people that saw the documentary on the big screen when it had a one-night-only showing in the UK back in 2014. Emily explains why she went to see it, how she was hoping for more as to why Al was obsessed with the play and what she thinks to Jessica Chastain's performance. All About Al: The Pacino Podcast is written, presented and produced by Mark Searby. Author! Author! was released in 1982. It is an autobiographical film written by playwright Israel Horovitz (The Indian Wants the Bronx) and directed by Arthur Hiller (The Out-of-Towners). It starred Al Pacino as Ivan Trevalian, a playwright trying to fix his play on Broadway while also looking after his five children after his girlfriend leaves him. It's a comedy of errors mixed with a bit of romance that saw Pacino finally do some comedy. In a World Exclusive, ex-actor Elva Josephson (The Blue Lagoon) joins the podcast to talk, for the first time ever!, about appearing opposite Pacino as one of his daughters - Bonnie - in the film. Josephson talks about how she was cast, why she enjoyed working with the other kids and how Pacino reacted when they had to stage a huge food fight. As one of the world's most dynamic and recognised celebrity icons, Eddie Murphy has been present in comedy and music for the last five decades and has dominated our big screens since his debut feature film, action comedy, 48hrs. some forty years ago. Delivered from a never-seen-before viewpoint, ‘Eddie Murphy; Deliriously Funny' is an immersive account of Murphy's entire comedy genius that spans the highs and lows of his career, touching on his childhood, exploring his influences, his stand-up comedy roots, music and film. From the author of ‘Rik Mayall: Comedy Genius' and ‘Al Pacino: The Movies Behind The Man', Mark Searby intricately unravels the golden thread of comedy that has weaved through the fabric of Murphy's life and career, in both film and music, and exposes the deeper catalysts behind it.Taking us on a profound journey that outlines Murphy's life, Searby creates an honest account that is charged with the excitement, frustration, confidence and fearlessness that Murphy has experienced and delivered throughout his work. Documenting the incredible highs, and the equally spectacular lows, ‘Eddie Murphy; Deliriously Funny' includes exclusive interviews and quotes from those that have worked closest to him. Highlighting his breakthrough on mainstream TV via Saturday Night Live, through to multimillion-dollar box office smashes of his most famed and successful films; 48 Hrs., Beverly Hills Cop, Coming To America, Harlem Nights, Boomerang, The Nutty Professor, Shrek, Dreamgirls, Norbit and Dr. Dolittle, Searby also delves in to the career flops that span comedy sketches and numerous big screen films, and ultimately how Murphy used them on one of the most amazing rides through Hollywood.Packed with excerpts and interviews with the likes of Reginald Hudlin (Boomerang), Katt Williams (Norbit), Keith Robinson (Dreamgirls), David Patrick Kelly (48 Hrs.), Steven Berkoff (Beverly Hills Cop) and more, not only does the book celebrate Murphy's career but it also gives insight to the person behind it. Featured heavily throughout the book are the deeper topics that have ultimately fuelled Murphy's passion for comedy. Exploring his ability to use comedy as a vehicle to “put racism and sexism front and centre throughout”, Searby delves into the vast pool of examples that find “In amongst all of the hilarious comedy routines Murphy was creating, there were moments that spoke honestly and directly about racism.”Told with an air of wit that captures Murphy's inspiring outlook on life, the book is not a gossip frenzied account of his personal life but a testament to the career and his doggedly determined, confident traits that has allowed it to span half a century. From influences that went before, such as Richard Pryor, Nipsey Russell, Moms Mabley and even Elvis Presley and Bruce Lee, Eddie Murphy became the biggest influence in the world, non more so than with aspiring Black comics.“A pioneer of a new form of much- loved entertainment that was speaking to an entirely new Black generation. It featured a combative edge, an edge that put racism and sexism front and centre throughout. They wouldn't shut up or back down when discussing the topics that mattered most to them. This was their time to speak and they were not going to let anyone off the hook. Eddie Murphy was doing that with his stand-up to a huge audience – Black and white.”As with his previous work, Searby masters his subject and highlights how, no matter whether you are an avid fan or not, Eddie Murphy will have touched your life at some point in time. Whether it be through music, through comedy, through the voice of a donkey or adult humour, his reign as one of the world's most iconic inhabitants is undeniable and ‘Eddie Murphy; Deliriously Funny' is a captivating insight into his legacy.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/writers-on-film.
