It's Die Hard in a tunnel! This week, Phil and Liam dig in, around, and underneath DAYLIGHT, Rob Cohen's 1996 disaster movie starring Sylvester Stallone, Amy Brenneman, Jay O. Sanders, Dan Hedaya, Stan Shaw and Viggo Mortensen! When a freak accident causes both ends of an underground tunnel in New York to collapse, a group of random strangers find themselves trapped below the Hudson River. The only person seemingly capable of helping them is Kit Latura (Sylvester Stallone), a disgraced former EMS Chief seeking redemption for his role in a past tragedy. The guys start by discussing the disaster movie genre in general, placing this throwback film in a wider context, as part of a grand tradition of similar motion pictures that date back to their 1970s heyday. The original DIE HARD has its roots in the disaster movie genre, having been directly inspired by THE TOWERING INFERNO, one of several such films discussed (unflinchingly) in the ‘Die Hard DNA' section, along with the AIRPORT franchise that influenced DIE HARD 2: DIE HARDER.After analyzing the film's premise, hero, and quirky cast of supporting characters (that includes a billionaire rock-climber, an Al Powell-esque uniform cop and a playwright with terrible taste in musicals), Liam presents his Earth-shattering theory that this entire film is in fact a Jesus allegory! The boys bust into ‘Die Hard Oscars' to hand out some action movie awards and cap things off with a mind-boggling edition of the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz!DAYLIGHT trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRWIfCpxNK4 At the time of release, DAYLIGHT is streaming on Starz in the US, and is available to rent or buy on Prime Video, YouTube, Apple/iTunes, Fandango, and all the usual platforms! Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/die-hard-on-a-blank/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

It's Die Hard in an epic crime saga! For this suitably epic episode, Phil and Liam are joined by special guest Katie Walsh - top Los Angeles film critic and co-host of the Michael Mann-themed podcast Miami Nice - to discuss the sprawling 1995 masterpiece Heat! When a team of elite professional thieves led by Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) pull off an audacious armored car robbery that leaves three guards dead, hard-charging Robbery-Homicide detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) is assigned to the case. In the process of investigating and surveilling the culprits, Hanna comes to admire McCauley's tremendous skill and discipline, and even starts to identify with him personally, while still pursuing him and his crew relentlessly across LA. Phil, Liam and Katie discuss their respective relationships with the movie over time, and debate whether it deserves to be considered one of the greatest films ever made. They explore its surprisingly high amount of ‘Die Hard DNA', before delving deep into Heat's storied production history, a section that also includes a detailed sidebar on Mann's 1989 TV movie LA Takedown, which became the blueprint for the final film. As always, they analyze the ‘hero' and ‘villain' of the piece, unpacking what makes these two iconic central characters so compelling, unique and enduring, and they also discuss the ladies of Heat (such as Ashley Judd, Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, Natalie Portman and Kim Staunton) and their respective roles in the tapestry of this complex and multi-faceted story. They parse through the various spectacular action set-pieces in the film, debate whether Heat would meet the definition to be considered an action movie, and talk about what Henry Rollins looks like in shorts (Google it). After a trip to the ‘Die Hard Oscars' to hand out some action movie awards, events culminate with a suitably intense showdown between Liam and Katie during the Double Jeopardy trivia quiz!HEAT trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpAhjOvQVj0At the time of release, HEAT is streaming on Hulu in the US and on Netflix in the UK and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, YouTube, Vudu and all the usual platforms! Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/die-hard-on-a-blank/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

We bring you Michael Mann's 1995 masterpiece, Heat. Al Pacino and Robert De Niro face off for the first time on the silver screen, supported by a sick supporting cast featuring Tom Sizemore, Jon Voight, Amy Brenneman, Ashley Judd, and Val Kilmer. Oh, and the most perfect gun fight ever put on film. But you really want to hear the story about Adam meeting Ton Loc in 2016 and cringingly asking him about working with Al Pacino in Heat. < '00 | an Art House Empire Production | #LessThan2000Support the show

Elaine and Mark from The Honeymoon Period podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Elaine's choice Heat. Heat (1995) is a heist drama written and directed by Michael Mann. Its ensemble cast features Al Pacino as Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, LAPD, Robert De Niro as Neil McCauley, Val Kilmer as Chris Shiherlis, Jon Voight as Nate, Tom Sizemore as Michael Cheritto, Diane Venora as Justine Hanna, Amy Brenneman as Eady, Ashley Judd as Charlene Shiherlis, Mykelti Williamson as Sergeant Bobby Drucker, Wes Studi as Lieutenant Sammy Casals, Ted Levine as Detective Mike Bosko, William Fichtner as Roger Van Zant, Natalie Portman as Lauren Gustafson, Tom Noonan as Kelso AND Hank Azaria as Alan Marciano. Neil McCauley leads a gang of elite criminals, but when a robbery of bearer bonds goes sour when one of the crew kills a guard he ends up in the path of Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, a hardened and obsessive detective. McCauley discovers Hanna on his tail but doesn't spook and agrees to one last heist. Heat is widely considered a masterpiece, the now iconic coffee scene marked the first time Pacino and De Niro shared the screen together and it is one of Christopher Nolan's favourite films. Recommendability scores reflected some of the criticisms (particularly around the role of women) but were still high. Lower scores for small screen reflected that it is one of those films best watched the big screen and gives an overall rating of 3.75.   [supsystic-tables id=328] Episode #315 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #315 Crew of Mark (@mark_greg) and Elaine (@elainegwrites) from The Honeymoon Period podcast Find their Websites online at https://t.co/CiX1Wv5dyH and at https://twitter.com/guardian and at https://twitter.com/bbcnewcastle Please make sure you give them some love   More about Heat For more info on Heat, you can visit Heat IMDb page here or Heat Rotten Tomatoes page here. Globalization, technology, devastating impacts from the foreclosure crisis and the opioid addiction have wreaked havoc on communities left behind by the modern economy. Some of these discarded places are rural. Others are cities or suburbs. Some vote blue, others red. Some are the most diverse communities in America, while others are nearly all white, all Latino, or all Black. In this episode we visit four cities and towns with deep poverty and gutted public services— where entire communities are struggling to hold on.Our guest is Michelle Wilde Anderson, a professor of property, local government and environmental justice at Stanford Law School. Her recent book is "The Fight to Save the Town: Reimagining Discarded America"."We have given up on many of these places", Michelle tells us. She describes discarded America as "giant parts of many states that have not found their foothold in the 21st century economy." Discarded America is "a term that describes active decision making."Her book describes the fallout from decades of cuts to local government amidst rising segregation by income and race. She reports on efforts to revive four communities— Stockton California, Lawrence Massachusetts, Josephine County Oregon, and Detroit. The focus is on local activists, community leaders, elected officials and others who have poured their heart and soul into fighting for the places where they live. In these places and others some of the most basic aspects of local government services have been dismantled. This podcast was first published last year and is a companion piece to "How Do We Fix It?" episode #390— "For the Love of Cities" with Peter Kageyama. In this episode we learn about brave and innovative efforts to cope with years of falling tax receipts in many communities that were hit hard by the foreclosure crisis, and decades of economic decline as jobs and entire industries moved offshore or to other parts of the country. As always with our podcast, there is also a focus on solutions, as we discuss examples of civic pride and rebuilding.Michelle Wilde Anderson book Review: "Building Back Better— One Community at a Time (New York Times).Recommendation: Richard watched the FX drama series, "The Old Man", starring Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, Amy Brenneman and Alia Shawkat. “Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner….” – Neil McCauley, 1995And that's the apparent thesis for one of the most beloved films of the past thirty years spoken by living legend Robert DeNiro sitting across from fellow living legend Al Pacino.  Or is it really the main theme of the movie?  Maybe it's just something cool-sounding that a tough guy says but doesn't really follow through on….director Michael Mann examines that very question among so many others during this almost three hour crime epic focusing on the brewing conflict between two self-obsessed master tacticians on both sides of the law…and the women who love them….along with every one else whose lives they impact.  This STACKED cast also includes Val Kilmer, Diana Venora, Amy Brenneman, Tom Sizemore, Jon Voight, Wes Studi, Dennis Haysbert, Mykelti Williamson, Danny Trejo, and Ted Levine among SO many others.  Let's find out if the action IS really the juice…..WARNING: ADULT LANGUAGE THROUGHOUT MOVIE CLIPSHost: Geoff Gershon  Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Neighborhood, local and regional inequality has been overlooked too long. In this episode we visit four cities and towns with deep poverty and gutted public services— where entire communities are struggling to hold on.Our guest is Michelle Wilde Anderson, a professor of property, local government and environmental justice at Stanford Law School. Her new book is "The Fight to Save the Town: Reimagining Discarded America"."We have given up on many of these places", Michelle tells us. Discarded America is "a term that describes active decision making."She reports on efforts to revive four communities— Stockton California, Lawrence Massachusetts, Josephine County Oregon, and Detroit. The focus is on local activists, community leaders, elected officials and others who have poured their heart and soul into fighting for the places where they live. In these places and others some of the most basic aspects of local government services have been dismantled. We learn about the devastating impact of the foreclosure crisis, opioid addiction and long economic decline as jobs and entire industries moved offshore or to other parts of the country. As always with our podcast, there is also a focus on solutions, as we discuss examples of civic pride and rebuilding.Book Review: "Building Back Better— One Community at a Time (New York Times). Our Recommendation: Richard is watching the FX drama series, "The Old Man", starring Jeff Bridges, Jon Lithgow, Amy Brenneman and Alia Shawkat.
