Welcome to The Reel Schmooze with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman and host Amanda Borschel-Dan, where we bring you all the entertainment news and film reviews a Jew can use. This week, we learn that famed actress and chanteuse Barbra Streisand received an honorary Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Borschel-Dan, who is reading the artist's massive memoir, calls on all podcast fans to send in the names of their favorite Streisand films for a future episode. We then turn to the monumentally Jewish movie, "A Serious Man," written, produced, edited and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen in 2009. Set in 1967 Minnesota, the film focuses on the Gopnik family: father Larry, mother Judith, kids Danny and Sarah, and uncle Arthur. On the surface, the middle-class family appears to be merrily rolling along, anticipating Danny's approaching bar mitzvah. And then everything falls apart and it becomes a very funny retelling of the Book of Job. However, before the movie takes off, the audience is treated to a quote from the great rabbinic sage Rashi and is shown a Yiddish-only shtetl ghost story short -- just... because. Stay tuned for our duo's thoughts on the much-recommended Coen brothers' film, "A Serious Man." The Reel Schmooze is produced by Ari Schlacht and can be found wherever you get your podcasts.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Nearly 20 years after his first Palme d'Or, Romanian auteur Cristian Mungiu once again takes the festival's top prize for “Fjord” – a film exploring the tensions between religious conservatism and social liberalism. It stars “Marvel” actor Sebastian Stan and Norwegian actress Renate Reinsve as parents accused of domestic abuse. Before the big win, Eve Jackson sat down with Mungiu and Reinsve in Cannes.
The Cannes awards are here, and somehow the Oscar race feels less clear than it did before. In this episode of The Oscars Outsider Podcast, we react to the major winners from the Cannes Film Festival, including the Palme d'Or win for Fjord, and try to figure out what any of it means for the Oscar race. The big question: did Cannes give us a new frontrunner, or did it make the whole season even messier? We dig into the Screen Cannes jury grid, where Fjord landed at 2.5 while several other contenders, including Fatherland, Minotaur, and All of a Sudden, scored higher. We also talk through the mismatch between critical consensus and jury awards, which films feel stronger after Cannes, which ones suddenly look shakier, and whether the Palme winner is actually positioned for Oscar attention. If you follow Cannes, Oscar season, festival buzz, or the strange gap between critics' favorites and awards bodies, this episode is for you.Subscribe for more Oscar race analysis, festival reactions, and awards season chaos.

Cannes is almost over, which means it is time to make our Palme d'Or predictions. In this episode, we break down the Cannes competition, make our picks for who we think could win the Palme d'Or, and talk through which films might carry momentum into the Oscar race. We get into the strange energy of this year's festival, the movies that seem built for jury attention, the ones that could break out later, and whether Cannes still feels like the launchpad it used to be.Along the way, we also talk John Travolta's honorary Palme d'Or, Paul Schrader's Cannes grumpiness, Jacob Elordi's jury absence, and the general chaos of trying to read festival buzz from afar. The episode sets up the Palme prediction segment directly in the intro, so this title and thumbnail are aligned with what the show actually promises.Chapters:0:00 Intro0:42 John Travolta's honorary Palme d'Or & Paul Schrader4:24 Setting the stage: Cannes wraps up5:06 Top storylines & the Screen jury grid (Fatherland, Minotaur)9:43 Standing ovations & the clapping arms race12:08 Polarizing films & Fjord (Cristian Mungiu)14:01 Where's Hollywood? "Sound of Falling" huet de Film d'Ouverture vum leschte Festival de Cannes geheescht - a keen hätt geduecht, dass den Titel eng gutt Ëmschreiwung kéint sinn vun deem, wat an de leschte Méint an der Lëtzebuerger Filmbranche gelaf ass. Virun engem Joer ass um 78. Festival de Cannes mam Jafar Panahi säin “It Was Just an Accident” eng Lëtzebuerger Koproduktioun mat der Palme d'Or ausgezeechent ginn.

It's Christmas time, so we're looking at a movie that tells the story of a mysterious man who spends a lot of time on the roof with his animal friends and has the ability to sneak into your house undetected as if by magic: Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai! Ghost Dog appears nowhere on the 1999 box office charts because it technically didn't have a major theatrical release in the US until March of 2000 (it did begin its festival run in 1999, starting in May at the Cannes Film Festival where it was nominated for the Palme D'or) Starring Forest Whitaker and written and directed by Jim Jarmusch with a score by Wu-Tang Clan's RZA, Ghost Dog is a movie unlike any other, aggressively defying genre and staying laser-focused on its bizarre but endearing vision. This week, John and Julia are joined by returning guest Sean Malin, author of the just-released book The Podcast Pantheon to talk Whitaker, Jarmusch, podcasts, Jon Hamm, and Christmas movies!

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been jailed, gone on hunger strike and even sold his house to pay bail – all for the right to make movies. After winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes and being selected to represent France at the Oscars, he's now releasing his new film "It Was Just an Accident", inspired by his own imprisonment. In this interview, Panahi explains to Eve Jackson why every film is worth the risk.

For episode 241, I'm joined once again by my co-host Myles Hughes, with producer Steve Prusakowski behind the scenes preparing for Emmys and a new season of TV Topics, so look out for that soon. This is a Cannes results episode, as the 2025 Cannes Film Festival is now in the books. We look at all of the prizes from the fest, from the Palme d'Or on down, while speculating on which movies could be potential Oscar contenders down the line. Myles has seen Friendship (reviewed by yours truly here) and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (reviewed here), so we discuss those in fully detail than when I had seen them initially (we also ranked the Mission: Impossible franchise, following my list here). Plus, I chime in on Bring Her Back (review here), which I charitably did not care for. We recorded fairly late, so we kept it on the shorter side. Still, it's a quality episode...As always my friends and faithful listeners/readers, I do hope you all enjoy the latest episode of the Awards Radar Podcast, our 241st one to date (here's to many more). Of course, feel free to revisit the previous installments by clicking the Podcast tab (here) on the top of the page. Plus, listen to us on Apple Podcasts (iTunes), Spotify, and other platforms. More to come each and every single week, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening!

Also featuring the best time to say 'I love you', Max's hidden appreciation for Russian Orthodoxy, and a dive into last week's Cannes Film Festival and the new movies coming soon to America.
