pWotD Episode 2867: International Women's Day Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 327,957 views on Saturday, 8 March 2025 our article of the day is International Women's Day.International Women's Day (IWD) commemorates women's fight for equality and liberation along with the women's rights movement. International Women's Day gives focus to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. Spurred by the universal female suffrage movement, International Women's Day originated from labor movements in Europe and North America during the early 20th century, with the modern holiday, March 8, being declared by Vladimir Lenin. The earliest version reported was a "Woman's Day" organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on February 28, 1909. In solidarity with them, communist activist and politician Clara Zetkin proposed the celebration of "Working Women's Day" approved at the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen, albeit with no set date; the following year saw the first demonstrations and commemorations of International Women's Day across Europe. Vladimir Lenin declared March 8 as International Women's Day in 1922 to honour the women's role in the 1917 Russian Revolution; it was subsequently celebrated on that date by the socialist movement and communist countries. The holiday became a mainstream global holiday following its promotion by the United Nations in 1977.International Women's Day is a public holiday in several countries. The UN observes the holiday in connection with a particular issue, campaign, or theme in women's rights. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:55 UTC on Sunday, 9 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see International Women's Day on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Olivia.

Clara Zetkin (1857-1933) was a prominent German Marxist theorist, activist, and advocate for women's rights. She played a pivotal role in the early socialist and communist movements, particularly in championing women's suffrage and equality. Zetkin also initiated International Women's Day, which is still celebrated globally today as a day of advocacy and solidarity for women's rights. In an article published this year for International Women's Day, Maddie Dery summarizes the various experiences of the women's liberation movement since the early 20th century: “The history of International Women's Day teaches us that when we fight, we win”. This spirit, which threads through the historic struggle for women's liberation and socialism, is easily identified in the revolutionary origins, legacies, and futures of International Women's Day. At Liberation School, we want to end March—which, since 1987, the U.S. recognizes as “Women's History Month”—and pull that red thread by publishing Claudia Jones' historic 1950 speech at an International Women's Day rally, which was also published in Political Affairs, the monthly journal of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA). Jones' speech rooted the contemporary moment of the class struggle in the long history of the fight for Black liberation, women's emancipation, peace, and socialism, linking together fighters from Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth to Mother Jones and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, from Lucy Stone and Ida B Wells to Williana Burroughs and Clara Zetkin. Born in Trinidad in 1915, Claudia Jones moved to New York City eight years later. She is one of the most significant revolutionary theorists and organizers of the 20th century. After joining the Communist Party in 1936 through the struggle to free the Scottsboro Boys, she rapidly developed as an organizer and intellectual and within two years was the associate editor of the CPUSA's Weekly Review and after another two years was the lead editor. Pushing the Party to prioritize struggles against male and national chauvinism, in the late 1940s Jones theorized the “super-exploitation” of Black working-class women through their structural location in U.S. society. In one 1949 article, she wrote that “the Negro woman, who combines in her status the worker, the Negro, and the woman, is the vital link to… heightened political consciousness”. For Jones, the heightened oppression of Black women workers and their historic roles as leaders and organizers of their communities made Black women's participation and leadership essential to the communist and progressive struggle. To celebrate International Women's Day in 2023, Kristen Ghodsee reads an abridged version of Clara Zetkin's article on the official establishment of March 8 as International Communist Women's Day. The article is from International Press Correspondence, Vol. 2 No. 18, published on 8 March 1922.  Clara Zetkin was the leader of the women's section of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Germany, and a close friend and mentor to Alexandra Kollontai when the latter was in exile in Western Europe. Both Kollontai and Zetkin were in attendance in 1910 at the 2nd International Conference of Socialist Women where the assembled delegates voted to establish an international women's day once a year. The date of 8 March, however, was only firmly established internationally after the 1922 congress in Moscow, in honor of the women's demonstration that kicked off the February revolution in Russia (which occurred on 8 March by the Western calendar). Zetkin's passionate article clearly shows that IWD was meant to do more than merely celebrate women. It was supposed to be a mass recruitment event to bring new men and women into the struggle against the continued ravages of capitalism. In this International Women's Day edition of his Search for Meaning podcast, Stephen Wise Temple Senior Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback hosts Beata Poźniak, a multitalented Polish-born filmmaker and artist who helped convince the United States Congress to officially recognize International Women's Day in the United States, celebrated every March 8.In this special episode, Poźniak discusses the immigrant experience and struggle with identity, the impact of growing up under Soviet rule during the Cold War, the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine, the power of symbolism, mandatory school visits to Auschwitz, and her success as an artist in the United States. Along with starring as Marina Oswald in Oliver Stone's "J.F.K.," she is a noted director, poet, producer, painter, and award-winning narrator of audio books.Born behind the Iron Curtain, immigrated to the United States in the late 1980s with, as she puts it, "big hopes and big dreams." Though she was exceptionally high-achieving in Europe -- earning a master's in fine arts with high honors at the age of 22 -- little did she know that she would one day star in an Academy Award-nominated film, much less lobby Congress to recognize a day that had long been celebrated by the international community."As a girl growing up in Poland, I really have beautiful memories of this day, because it was a day filled with celebration ... a lot of kindness, recognition, respect," she says. "I felt very special as a girl for that one day. It was very empowering ... My girlfriends would feel very empowered, and we felt that we could take power into our hands and also define ourselves, our own beauty, and how smart and educated we can be. And we learned all that in the schools."The idea for International Women's Day dates back to 1910. In August of that year, at an International Women's Conference organized to precede the general meeting of the Socialist Second International in Copenhagen, Denmark, German Marxist and women's rights activist Clara Zetkin proposed an annual "special Women's Day." The next year, over one million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland marked the day, protesting for equal rights and suffrage for women across Europe. When Poźniak arrived in the United States, she discovered that few Americans knew of the day."My English was very poor; they thought I was still talking about women's history month," she says. "I thought, 'No, no, it's a day, a day. It's a special day.'"She decided to spearhead an education effort that eventually led to the introduction of a bill before Congress. In 1994, less than 15 years after Poźniak arrived in the United States, Joint Resolution 316 was passed.

Fue en 1975 que la ONU hizo oficial el Día Internacional --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The translation is available for free on www.frenchcarte.com Cet épisode est inspiré de Céline, ma copine de Bordeaux. Pourquoi ?

This class looks at some of the important communist responses to fascism and explores how communists have organized on the ground to fight and win against fascists. We begin with interwar Europe and international debates in communist party organizing but also discuss how Marxist-Leninists like the Black Panther Party understood fascism in the U.S. This provides us with some useful perspectives on various tactics, their relative successes and failures, and what this means for the present moment. The roots of International Women's Day originate from the Socialist Party of America organizing a “National Women's Day” in 1909 to honor a 1908 garment workers strike, and inspired by this, at the International Socialist Women's Conference the following year, a group of German socialists (including Clara Zetkin, Luise Ziets, Paula Thiede and Käte Duncker) proposed an International Women's Day. As Cinta Frencia and Daniel Gaido note for Jacobin, for these women, the adoption of the day “meant promoting not just female suffrage, but labor legislation for working women, social assistance for mothers and children, equal treatment of single mothers, provision of nurseries and kindergartens, distribution of free meals and free educational facilities in schools, and international solidarity.” But, as women continue to wage these struggles, it is important to look beyond the North American and European history, and to recognize the contributions of feminists from elsewhere since as Rama Salla Dieng emphasizes for Africa Is a Country series “Talking back: African feminisms in dialogue”: “There has been a deliberate erasure of generations of women from Africa, The Caribbean, India and Latin America because they contest mainstream feminism so their voices should also be heard, the specificities and nuances of their diverse struggles acknowledged.” So this week on AIAC Talk, we're interviewing Professor Shireen Hassim, Rosebell Kagumire and Rama Salla Dieng. Shireen, a South African academic, is the Canada 150 Research Chair in Gender and African Politics at Carleton University, Rosebell is a Ugandan writer, award-winning blogger and pan-African feminist, and Rama is a Senegalese writer, activist and lecturer in African and International Development at the Centre of African studies at the University of Edinburgh.

Listen to the history and legacy of a true internationalist, feminist visionary, Clara Zetkin. This podcast is a Zoom recording of one of the sessions of our Revolutionary Feminism course. This session was taught by David Chung of the People's Forum and Kavita Kabeer of All Indian People's Science Network. Clara Zetkin was a leader in early socialist and feminist movements, often known as the "grandmother of German communism." Zetkin co-organized the International Socialist Women's Congress, the Spartacist League, International Women's Day, and opposition to World War I, fascism, and the Nazi party. In 1919, she became a founding member of the German Communist Party. Her feminist analysis was rooted in and with the exploited class; in her words, socialism was the only movement that "could truly serve the needs of working-class women.

Ma torniamo all'8 marzo.

“Fascism is the strongest, most concentrated, and classic expression at this time of the world bourgeoisie’s general offensive. It is urgently necessary that it be brought down." As fascism continues to become more violent and brazen internationally, the question of how to fight it becomes ever more urgent. In Fighting Fascism: How To Struggle and How To Win by Clara Zetkin the esteemed German Communist delivers her 1923 address to the Third Plenum of the Communist International which included her defintion of fascism, an analysis of its origins and what social, economic and political conditions led to the rise of fascism in Italy, tragically accurate and prescient warnings about the development of fascism in Germany, why the fight against fascism must be taken up by the entire proletariat and more. We also comment on fascism in the USA, discuss how to struggle against and overcome fascism and why we can never forget the devastating impact that fascism has had on the world. Please note that this episode was recorded before the racist murder of George Floyd by members of the Minneapolis Police Department and it is for this reason that this and the subsequent uprisings and protests that followed aren't discussed in this episode. This episode is part of our series on Marxist-feminists. As Mao and Thomas Sankara have said, “Women hold up the other half of the sky.” Red Book Club recognizes that including the voices of nonmen in our studies is not a niche activity, but is in fact an essential step in gaining the most comprehensive view of the material conditions of the past and present that we possibly can; therefore we’ve planned this series to amplify the ideas that nonmen have been bringing to the conversation for centuries. From Federici’s analysis of women as a means of primitive accumulation to Luxemburg’s essay of the benefits of revolution vs the impossibility of reform, each of these works confronts history and the movement for social change through the lens of the experiences of nonmen in society.
