Welcome to Oscar Week!!! While Annie and Kris have been pretty busy with regular daily life, we did not want Oscar Week to come and go with no special bonus episode. We're not doing a full week of episodes like last year, but we do have a fun one for you today. If you're like us, you always have those one or two or five "special nominees" that you've liked and respected for YEARS and it makes you NUTS that these folks have yet to be truly recognized by The Academy. That's where we're going for this Bonus Episode: sharing our Top Five Motion Picture professionals (not all actors) who are seriously overdue for that Oscar. So who do y'all think is overdue for their 45 seconds on the Oscar Stage? We want to know! Shoot us an email: hello@thetopfivepodcast.com
It's Oscar Week! In this episode, host Richard Roeper breaks down the main 23 Oscar categories and gives his future predictions for all of the winners. Follow The Richard Roeper Show on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to stay up to date.

Phil and David follow their special Oscar Week episode with Jimmy Kimmel with this never not funny "Lunch" with another hilarious Jimmy -- their friend Jimmy Pardo who has hosted both of them on his own popular and long standing podcast called "Never Not Funny." Phil and David discuss how they each first came to know Jimmy, then seek some advice about keeping a podcast alive and well. Jimmy tells a great horror story about his worst moment as a stand up comedian, working for a record company and nearly opening for Elton John, and his Pardcast-A-Thon charity event to benefit Smile Train. Jimmy also shares the less than wild story about getting cut out of the movie "Dreamgirls," while David tells his own tale about getting cut out of the movie "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping," while producer Will Sterling explains what it felt like to get edited out of an episode of "This Is Us." Phil then offers his power producer perspective and tries to make everyone feel better. All this and tasty salads and sandwiches from Oui Melrose. OH GOOD LORD!!! What a week it has been! My sweet dog passed away on Tuesday and then I got sicker than I don't know what. So y'all are getting this final Bonus Oscar Episode a tad bit late and definitely after you already know who won what this year. The ceremony itself? Jimmy Kimmel was, okay, I guess...and maybe the jokes were naughty enough, but I felt like he held his own. The grouping of all the presenters was...strange, I guess? Is there another word for it? Idris Elba and Nicole Kidman....I mean, they're both hot, but then what??? My favorite win of the night actually was Sarah Polley, getting the Best Adapted Screenplay for WOMEN TALKING. I still remember watching her "come of age" in the 90's in all those Atom Egoyan films and loved that she became a writer/director. And all the horror movie fans out there were swooning to see Jamie Lee Curtis get her first Oscar. anyway - we loved doing these bonus shows for y'all and I hope you enjoyed them. What should my co-hosts and I take on next? We'd LOVE to hear your thoughts - hello@thetopfivepodcast.com
It's Oscar Week! A week we'll always love… even if we haven't seen the all the movies. Our guest this week is Michael Schulman, author of Oscar Wars, a definitive bio of the awards ceremony and the organization that created it. From the catfights of Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland to the slap heard round the world, this book has it all. Halle Berry, Frank Capra, Steven Spielberg, John Wayne, Dennis Hopper, Easy Riders, Raging Bulls and Citizen Kanes, they are all here and you don't want to miss any of them. We loved every moment of this conversation…and we didn't want you to miss a thing. So, no bookstore again this week, but next week we are back with a bookstore, promise. Books mentioned in the podcast: Play It as It Lays by Joan Didion “Jumpers” by Tad Friend for The New Yorker https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2003/10/13/jumpers Hollywood: The Oral History by Sam Wasson Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M.: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and the Dawn of the Modern Woman by Sam Wasson
What, may you ask, is an "Oscar Moment?" Well, it's that performance that you want to watch over and over and over again on YouTube because it just blows your mind. OR - it's the acceptance speech that you watch over and over and over again on YouTube because it makes you laugh every time. OR - it's your very favorite Oscar Host and that one time when she picked on...? OR - it's that funny bit that those two presenters did and you absolutely can't get over how silly it was. Annie and I did have some overlap for this episode - but, hey, we're sisters. Deal with it. Meanwhile - we've got one more great Oscar Week Bonus Episode for you this week and then we're going to get to some SUPER DUPER fun episodes about... song lyrics ensemble casts character actors And then - COME ONE - tell us how you feel about our lists! We can take it!

Hey - it's Oscar Week!!! (Yeah, we love the Oscars!!!) And Annie and I got together to record three special episodes this week!! Although frankly, the Oscars are not what they used to be...but I think we always hold out for "this year's show will be better than last year's." Sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn't. We take on three lists this week for three super fun bonus episodes: Surprises and Snubs Oscar "Moments" Original Songs For Surprises and Snubs, Annie and I share our Top Five "favorite" situations where someone missed getting a nomination, has still never won after a bunch of nominations, a performance we weren't counting on, or a recipient we hadn't counted on. So look forward to these three bonus episodes this week and let us know - did we get it right? Which ones do you totally get and which do you totally hate? Let us know! hello@thetopfivepodcast.com

The Manuel”Manny” Cuevas family heritage in the fashion industry stems from the creation of handmade iconic looks since the 1950's for artists and entertainers like The Rat Pack Elite, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Salvadore Dali, The Lone Ranger, Johnny Cash and countless more. After helping relocate his father's shop to Nashville, Manny was inspired by the success of the family business and renewed brand recognition gained from the move. He became more involved with the shop's client relationships and started to design and create more individual garments for those celebrity clientele. Manny worked with many of his fathers clientele making individual pieces for Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Jr., and Dwight Yoakam to name a few. Manny realized the full potential for the Manuel brand and was ready to create a collection and expand the family brand. Manny worked with a manufacturer to create the first large production of designs from the Manuel Shop. “The Manuel Collection” represented a unity and togetherness between both father and son and was the first time Manny began to learn about large manufactured production runs. The launch of the Manuel Exclusive collection started the family's Manuel brand PR buzz with articles written in “The New York Post”, “Flaunt Magazine”, “GQ”, “Vouge” & “Vanity Fair”. The following week a major marketing push occurred during Oscar Week in Los Angeles at a press and celebrity attended week long showing of the collection. The collection sold at many prominent boutiques across the country as well as Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales. This experience exposed Manny to the full cycle of a large scale production of a fashion line. From the beginning concept drawings, CAD design, traveling the world sourcing material, working with the factories in Italy, on fabrication creating and managing budgets, producing a fashion show as well as other efforts for promoting and selling the collection, this experience gave Manny a unique insight to all phases of producing and running a fashion line.In 2009 Manny began an endeavor to create a brand of his own, by continuing The living legacy as Owner and Designer of Wear It Out by Manny designing for such artists as; The Band Perry, Ronnie Dunn, Daniel Peck, Bridget Tatum, Kieth Gattis and Paul McDonald of American Idol. Manny is focused on creating new designs, hand made garments, producing limited run collections, as well as consulting for other fashion brands. http://www.wearitoutbymanny.com/about-manny-cuevas/Host - Trey Mitchelltreymitchellphotography IG and FBfeeding_the_senses_unsensored on IG and FBFor Sponsorship Information or Questions - ftsunashville@gmail.comTheme Song - Damien HorneTake It From Me @damienhorne

Today's episode of the podcast is Part 2 of our Oscar Week coverage! This week I have four-time Oscar nominee Marshall Curry and Siqi Song! Marshall was on the show last year for his documentary short "A Night at the Garden" that was nominated for an Oscar and it was great to have him back on the show. While this is Siqi Song's first Oscar nomination, she was also part of the art department for the Oscar nominated animated film "Missing Link". It was great to talk with Marshall about the new venture into Live Action Shorts instead of the Documentaries that he's best known for, and hear about how his film "The Neighbors Window" came together. Siqi's film "Sister" was her final student film project that tells such a unique story of the One Child Law in China. She used an incredible form of stop motion animation using yarn to build all of her characters. I had such a great time talking to both of these Oscar nominees and can't want to see what happens this Sunday during the 92nd Academy Awards. Make sure to visit ShortsTV on the site below to be able to watch all of the Oscar Nominated Shorts or find them in a theater near you. Thanks, Marshall and Siqi! Enjoy the episode.

On this Pop Culture Confidential Oscar week special: Predicting the Oscars with math, analytics and good old fashion statistics! Our guest is mathematician Ben Zauzmer. Mr. Zauzmer majored in applied math at Harvard University and works as a manager of baseball analytics for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He applied his knowledge to his passion: the movies, and he has created a complex mathematical model to calculate a nominee’s percentage probability of winning. His model includes different factors: historic data, the film’s wins and losses at other awards shows leading up to the Oscars, the actors age, if they are playing a real character, box office etc. His predictions have been published in The Hollywood Reporter, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Ben Zauzmer is the author of the new book ‘Oscarmetrics, The Math Behind the Biggest Night in Hollywood’. Available on Amazon. Follow Ben Zauzmer on twitter: @BensOscarMath

The MMO’s are a perfect opportunity to do so, and our audience helped us achieve as much. The MMO’s are about our community as much as they’re about the Oscars or two guys named Mike. We received a ton of submissions on categories you wanted us to discuss as you wrote more than 50% of this show to highlight what we should nominate, debate, negate, and celebrate about film year. So the format went as follows. We alternate between your submissions, the categories you chose and the declarations you made about your winners. Then as promised, Mike & I chose our winners for each of the Academy Awards + our Top 22’s on the year. As for the rest of our programming, Oscar Week is just getting started. Do stay tuned for that Predictions show, we’ll be doing a final preview with a special guest, & we’ll also be doing an Oscar morning show after the Indie Spirits. As always, let us know your thoughts on the MMO’s, and like we said, we’re happy to include more of your submissions on future episodes. We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. You can subscribe / rate / review / like / share / & listen to us on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Spotify, and just about wherever you might listen. OSCAR WEEK on POP CULTURE CONFIDENTIAL Award-winning set decorator Regina Graves (‘Blue Jasmine’, ‘I am Legend’, ‘The Knick’, ‘Gotham’, ‘Vinyl)’ joins us this week to talk about her work on Martin Scorsese’s epic new picture 'The Irishman’, premiering on Netflix this week. Regina Graves shares some the most fascinating aspects of her teams work and the massive endeavor that was ‘The Irishman’, with nearly 300 sets dressed. We talk how she collaborates closely with production designer Bob Shaw, with whom Graves has worked on multiple productions. The amount of detail that goes into finding or building pieces for, for example, Jimmy Hoffa's (Al Pacino) office set or for Russel Bufalino (Joe Pesci) and Frank Sheeran's (Robert De Niro) homes. How Martin Scorsese’s own family influenced the set decoration, the style of the Italian American gangster genre and so much more. And Regina Graves also talks about her latest production, the upcoming movie 'The Many Saints of Newark', the prequel movie to the Sopranos TV series. ‘The Irishman’ is out in a limited theatrical release now and premieres on Netflix on November 27th.
OSCAR WEEK on Pop Culture Confidential! Revisit our talk with the legendary production designer, and Oscar nominee Barbara Ling (The Doors, Batman & Robin, Falling Down, Less Than Zero). Barbara Ling talks to us about her incredible work on 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, turning back to clocks to 1969 and recreating some of LAs most iconic landmarks. From incredibly difficult face lifts on Hollywood Boulevard, to rebuilding Spahn Ranch, to how they used Tarantino’s massive memorabilia collection in their design work and much more.

Pop Break's Film Editor Marisa Carpico and Senior Editor Matt Taylor return to predict the winners for the technical Oscars. Categories include : Best Cinematography, Achievement in Sound Mixing, Achievement in Sound Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, Achievement in Film Editing, and Best Hair & Makeup.
Oscar Week is here! After a month long hiatus I am thrilled to be back and talking with the Oscar Nominated filmmakers of this year's short films. This episode is Part 1 of the coverage featuring Daria Kashcheeva from "Daughter", Rosana Sullivan & Kathryn Hendrickson from "Kitbull", & Everett Downing Jr. from "Hair Love". All three films are part of my favorite of categories, the Animated Shorts. This first group of filmmakers had such great stories about how their films came to be. Rosana and Kathryn both have a long history in animation. Rosana was one of the Producers on Toy Story 4, and they have both worked on films like The Incredibles, Finding Dory and The Good Dinosaur. Everett Downing Jr. is another animation juggernaut animating films like WALL-E, Up, Brave, Ratatouille, and Ice Age. Which brings us to Daria Kashcheeva. Daria's film is only the second short film she's made. It was her student film final, and it's absolutely breathtaking. I have never seen anything like "Daughter". Daria literally created parts of her animation style to make this film. It's only a matter of time before she joins the ranks of the other three animation titans. It was so much fun talking to the four of them! Next week I will have two more episodes as part of my Oscar coverage. A huge Thank You to Daria, Rosana, Kathryn, and Everett for taking the time to join me on this first Oscar episode. Look for the ShortsTV program playing in a theater near you or find it online on the links below. Enjoy the episode!

It’s step 1 and part 1 of our Way Too Early Oscar Predictions series, and it’s the necessary step before we can actually make those picks in our next episode. We NEVER stop. It’s all about Oscars 2020 now! This show has quickly become a highlight on our calendar. It’s a blast to look ahead at the calendar at large and locate all of the potential Oscar movies in the slate, and we broke the films down into 6 groups. First, we talked about the movies we got on our schedule over the next two months of March & April with Captain Marvel (next week’s first OSP / Movie Event) and March 22nd’s Us from Jordan Peele. Then we took a dive into the offerings from this winter’s Sundance Film Festival with most of the major players now owned by Amazon Prime, certainly envious of how Netflix emerged as a major player on red carpets this past season. Group 3 is the long anticipated, Long Time Coming’s like Scorsese’s The Irishman & Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The fourth group discusses all the films from recently nominated people from Greta Gerwig’s Little Women to Daniel Kaluuya’s buzzed about performance in Queen & Slim. Group 5 discusses the potential Oscar breakouts like Cynthia Erivo in Harriet and Rian Johnson’s Knives Out. Then we cannot help ourselves when we discuss Group 6, the Blockbusters. This past year had a popular film imperative. We wonder if next year could have some crossover hits amongst the potential nominees. MMO doesn’t stop. We’re a year round film preview, review, interview & appreciation pod, and this 100% scientifically accurate process of predicting next year’s Oscars began with this episode. Stay tuned for part 2 where we’ll reveal our selections. Then we’ll have another fun MMO Weekly episode for you Monday before we preview & review Captain Marvel next week, along with (we hope) another early 2019 movie review. “This is the business we’ve chosen.” As always, let us know what you think. We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. You can subscribe / rate / review / like / share / & listen to us on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Spotify, and just about wherever you listen to podcasts. The lack of a host & a program that seemed to be pulled together at the last minute worried the hell out of us. The Academy gave many a mixed message, taking a radical stance one day & reversing course the next. We were left with one of the more puzzling precursor awards seasons in recent memory, and predicting the winners became a much more difficult task than in previous years. When you add some unprecedentedly low rated nominees, we braced for a long & as Bette Davis said, “bumpy night.” So as we readied for the worst, we sighed with relief at the positives. There were some funny comedy bits, some fun musical numbers, and exciting upset winners. What we thought could be an overall disaster might have been avoided, if only the Academy could stick the landing. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and like many of the coulda / woulda / shoulda been great movies on the year, the disappointments of the night stuck out all the more. We’re left with another Oscar Night rollercoaster with major highs & lows, but with plenty to analyze. Our loaded Oscar Week of 8 pods finally comes to a rousing conclusion with our Recap & Instant Reaction show as only MMO could do. It’s raw & it’s off the cuff & hot takes come at ya fast & furious. Now that the big night has come and gone, here’s what you can expect from MMO post Oscar Week. We’ll have one more chance to discuss the fallout from the Oscars after some more introspection, and dare we say - sleep. That’ll come your way mid-week. Then we’ll take an early look ahead to next year’s release schedule & potential Oscar noms with our Way Too Early Predictions. As we said, we hope our catalog plays long after any awards ceremony. We are a year round review / preview / interview & film appreciation podcast. Our MMO Weekly variety hours will return to their usually scheduled Monday releases, where we’ll recap the Hollywood week that was and get you ready for the Hollyweird week to come. Say what you want about the night, it was super entertaining, and we want to know what you think. We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail.
Cinemark CEO Mark Zoradi joined me during Oscar Week on Bloom in Tech to talk about the big theater chain's new ventures in virtual reality with Spaces and The Void, its esports venture with Super League Gaming, large-format screens, new projection technologies, better food, better seats and a whole lot of other changes arriving in the very old-school business of putting a movie on a screen. The No. 3 U.S. theater chain is also the largest in South and Central America. Zoradi, a long-time Disney veteran, is trying to steer the company forward at a time when teens love their mobile phones, Instagram, YouTube and Netflix. But we hope this episode plays well beyond the Oscars because of the rest of the program. The Indie Spirits might have been our favorite precursor awards show thus far, and no matter what happens on the 24th, this show will stand on its own merits. Catch the replay, watch the youtube clips, and attach the gifs. This was a fun show, and we had more fun recapping it. We had a blast with the audience interaction this week, doing both some #SixDegreesOfMMO & responding to more of your made-up Oscar categories, which we certainly got a kick out of once again. Then we had a long ass What We’re Watching segment, reviewing Ben Is Back, Studio 54, Frozen, Crashing, Friends From College, & more. Then we close things out with box office commentary and Hollywood new movie news like the Captain Marvel early buzz, A Quiet Place 2 green light, and the recent announcement of the Hulk Hogan biopic. This was our 7th day in a row where we recorded and put out an episode. It’s Oscar Week, and MMO has been working overtime. We concluded our category overview series this week, which included 9 pods on the 10 major categories: Song, Animated Film, Director, Picture, Screenplays, and the 4 Acting. Of course, we dropped our Oscar picks this past Thursday with analyses of the betting odds, and we concluded the awards season with two major centerpieces of the week. First, there was our interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg. Here we spoke to him about a bunch of big picture Academy topics, how he does his forecast, why he does his interviews of all the nominees, and just who he was, is, & will be - basically we got him to tell some of his origin story, chronicle his career path, and teach us how to be like him. Then finally, we did the Mike, Mike, and Oscars - our award show for the film year 2018. This year, we had you come up with many of the categories, and you did not disappoint. As always, let us know what you think. Who would you nominate & pick? Let us know! We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. We so rarely split on our picks, but this year we had a several, including Best Picture! Just yesterday we released our year end celebration on 2018’s best & worst moments in films with the 2018/19 Mike, Mike, & Oscars. On Wednesday, we drew our Category Overview series to a close with our podcast on the Best Adapted & Original Screenplays, we’ve consulted with the Oscar Oracle himself - Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter, made our picks in our betting odds analyzing Oscar Picks episode, and now we can finally bring our longest ending series of the year to a rousing conclusion. The Cold War Oscar Sprint Profile will be our last of the 2018/19 Awards Season, and along with the movie events, we have (insert tallied # here) episodes. So for the finale, we wanted to try something different, and hopefully, you find it as entertaining as we did. In any event, maybe don’t judge all our OSP / Movie Events / Movie Reviews based on this show alone. Fatigue set in days ago. I wish fatigue was merely what we were dealing with at this stage. At the moment, complete & utter physical collapse is a more accurate summary. But we’re doing daily Oscar pods this Oscar Week because despite the tax we might pay in lack of sleep, we gain in listeners & the new friends we’re making on a daily basis. This has unquestionably been the most successful week of our history, and we have you to thank. Stay tuned as we somehow finish the week up with two more shows. For Sunday Morning, we’ll have an MMOW. We’ll recap the Indie Spirit Awards and cover your latest responses to #SixDegreesOfMMO as well as any leftover submissions from the MMO’s. Then we’ll do our customary check-ins with whatever’s happening in the film world like Box Office Reactions, Trailer Thoughts, News of the Week, etc. Finally, we’ll have a Post Oscar Show recap ASAFP for you all on Monday as we’ll be recording it after the show Sunday Night. Though we may be dragging ourselves across the finish line, at least, the sprinting & the profiling is now behind us. That is, until we begin our 2019/2020 OSP’s next month! (God, I can feel Mike 1 trying to sneer me to death from wherever he’s reading this). As always, let us know what you think. Who would you nominate & pick? Let us know! We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. You can subscribe / rate / review / like / share / & listen to us on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Spotify, and just about wherever you listen to podcasts. When reality sucks, keep watching movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, & Oscar!
Today's episode is Part 3 of our Oscar Week coverage! Today's films come to us from the Live Action and Documentary Short categories. I talked with 3 of the Oscar nominated filmmakers, starting with Guy Nattiv from "Skin", Jeremy Comte from "Fauve", and Marshall Curry from "A Night at the Garden". Today's collection of films are all incredibly intense films with powerful themes and messages. I talked with each of the filmmakers about how their films stories came about, how Marshall learned about the Night at the Garden, the acting choices made in the films, the messages they hope are taken away from their films and so much more! Marshall Curry recently made the news with "A Night at the Garden" when Fox News refused to play his 30 second trailer. The Oscar Shorts are still playing in theaters around the country, as well as on the Oscar Shorts TV. All 15 films nomianted in the short film categories are absolutely incredible and I've had a wonderful time talking to all of these great filmmakers. This is the final part of our 3 part Oscar Shorts coverage and we can't begin to thank all of these Oscar Nominated Directors enough for their time. A special thanks to Guy Nattiv, Jeremy Comte, and Marshall Curry for taking the time out of their incredibly busy schedule. Don't miss their films as part of the Oscar Shorts Program. Best of luck to all of our guests at the Oscars this Sunday! Enjoy the episode!
Today's episode is Part 2 of our Oscar week coverage! Today's films focus soley on the Animated Short film category as I talk with 4 of the Oscar Nominated filmmakers, starting with Louise Bagnall from "Late Afternoon", David Fine and Alison Snowden from "Animal Behaviour", and Trevor Jimenez from "Weekends". The animated categories are always some of my favorite because animation offers a lot of freedom to story telling that you can't do with live action, and really lets the filmmakers imagination and creativity shine. I talked with each of them about their story development, the artistic approach and unique styles, inspiration behind their films, and so much more. The Oscar Shorts are still playing in theaters around the country, as well on the Oscar Shorts TV. All 15 films nominated in the short film categories are absolutely incredible and I'm having a wonderful time talking to all of these great filmmakers. Stay tuned for the 3 part of our Oscar week coverage tommorw as I talk to 3 more of the Oscar nominated Directors. A special thanks to Louise Bagnall, David Fine, Alison Snowden, and Trevor Jimenez for taking the time out of their incredibly busy week to talk with me. Don't miss their films as part of the Oscar Shorts Program. Best of luck to all of our guests at the Oscars this Sunday Enjoy the episode.
Shaan, Bill Dawes, Laurie Douglas, and Hailey Moses talk about the upcoming Oscars, a year of movies, and of course Mathew McConaughey.
Mike, Mike, & Oscar Daily Continues, and we’re losing our minds. ***This is a Non-Spoiler Episode*** MMO This Week/WGA Award Fallout - Top of Show What is a Category Review? - 4:06 Adapted Screenplay Category Review: Snubs - 4:56 The Coen Brothers, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs What It Will Win - 11:15 Why It Won’t - 13:18 Spike Lee, Blackkklansman What It Will Win - 14:48 Why It Won’t - 19:19 Can You Ever Forgive Me? I hope your finger didn’t go numb from scrolling this low. But as you now know, we have covered both Screenplay categories in 1 episode. One is copied from books, well - usually books, and the other is supposedly conceived in the glory of the hollywood production process. In either case, Mike and I just watched the movies. We didn’t actually read anything. Now the Writers Guild Awards were supposed to bring clarity to these categories. That’s why we waited until our final overview to cover the scribes. But of course, the Writers Guild went drunk with the power of the pen and completely threw these races into a tizzy. Per usual, Mike and I hone in upon a collective nervous breakdown the later we go in the episode. Though that’s the result of putting out shows every single goddamn day of Oscar Week, (which was a crazy idea of mine that I’m regretting immediately). Still, what we overpay in therapy, you gain in free entertainment value. This brings our Oscar Category Overviews to a rousing conclusion, and you can find all the previous episodes in our back catalog including Best Original Song, Supporting Actor, Lead Actress, Lead Actor, Supporting Actress, Animated Feature, Director, Picture, and now, this highly caffeinated look at the year in screenplays. We’re only 3 days into Oscar Week, and we’re already running on fumes. MMOW and our wonderful interview with THR’s Scott Feinberg kicked things off. Next up - we’ll have our Oscar Predictions episode where we’ll discuss the betting odds & make our picks. Then we’ll finally review Cold War to close out our series of 2018 Movie Reviews we call OSPs, and we’ll somehow record 3 more episodes this weekend. The MMO’s will be our own award show, where you have picked at least half of the categories, and where we’ll also select our noms and winners for all that you’ll see Sunday Night. Then on Sunday - day, we’ll release one final Oscar preview with another MMOW, and finally & insanely, we’ll limp to the finish line and record a recap of the big event late into Sunday night for your Monday morning commute. Picture the Blair Witch right now when I say, “I’m so scared right now.” If we’re this loopy on an f’ing Wednesday, what are we gonna be like come Oscar time? As always, let us know what you think. We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. You can subscribe / rate / review / like / share / & listen to us on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Spotify, and just about wherever you enjoy podcasts. Adam continues Oscar Week with his discussion of Bohemian Rhapsody.

With the Academy Awards around the corner, Charlie and Nate try something new: a break down of the movie musical La La Land through two of its key songs, "City of Stars" and "Start a Fire." These numbers, one by composer Justin Hurwitz, the other by Hurwitz and John Legend, might represent the two poles of the film's dramatic structure. But a deep dive into their musical construction reveals leitmotifs and left turns that leave us staggered at the different levels to La La Land's score. Special guest Genevieve Koski, deputy culture editor for Vox and co-host of the film podcast The Next Picture Show, joins to help our hosts journey through the uncharted terrain of cinema. Featuring: • Start a Fire - John Legend • City of Stars - Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone • John Legend - Ordinary People • Backstreet Boys - Everybody • Ariana Grande - Side To Side • Die Walkure, The Ring Cycle - Richard Wagner • Engagement, Planetarium, Epilogue, Mia + Sebastian's Theme - Justin Hurwitz • Générique, Dans le magasin de parapluies, Final - The Umbrellas of Cherbourg • Tie Fighter Theme - John Williams Check out Genevieve Koski's writing on Vox and her great podcast on La La Land here. Five Moms and a First Lady. A computer programmer and a video game producer. An aspiring actress and a syphilitic singer. ....These are your 2016 Oscar-nominated female roles!! In their now-annual tradition, Seán and Brian will peruse, parse and prognosticate on the only two categories at this year's Academy Awards that actually matter: Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. (And we'll give some nods to the egregiously overlooked as well.) It may be Oscar Week, but here on Broad Appeal it's Ladies' Day!
We’re huge Oscar fans, so ahead of the 2017 Academy Awards we talk through the nominees, speculating about likely winners and nerding out over the technical categories.
