We do not want to partner with independence and orphan-ness, but to allow the Holy Spirit to bring humility, alignment and freedom to our hearts and church. Philippians 2 vs 1-4 speaks about unity in the body.

A bonus episode, tracing the origins of New Hampshire's stubborn, self-sufficient, independent attitude. It is this cultural mindset that underpins the onset of the "siege" in Book 2, and animates much of the remaining stories. This week, Mic looks at the historical roots of that NH mindset and shares some of his personal experience with it too. Enjoying the podcast?

The lesson I had to learn was that I needed my own product and my own say in things. I just have that independent spirit. I'm not against franchises, like you said; they can be really good. I bought a Roof Max franchise with my son last year, or about a year and a half ago. So that's great because he doesn't have that desire to build his own product and create everything. But he wanted to have his own independent thing, and so we partnered. He handles the day-to-day business, and I help him market it and make decisions as a leader. It's a great fit for him because he's done a really good job at it. He's grown that business quickly, which has been awesome. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-inventive-journey/message

Hi James Navé, here, your host for Twice 5 Miles Radio. I'm pleased to welcome Emmy award-winning sports editor and documentary filmmaker Paul Devlin to the microphone. I first met Paul in 1996 when he and his team of filmmakers covered the National Poetry slam in Portland, Oregon. Little did anyone know Paul's film, SlamNation, would end up being the definitive documentary film about the Poetry Slam's early days. SlamNation will take you on a trip through this phenomenon, following New York City's novice team on its journey to join over 120 spoken word artists on 27 city teams at the National Poetry Slam in Portland, Oregon. Here, SlamNation discovers not only the raw energy and sheer talent of some of the most significant performance poets in the country but a good old-fashioned tale of heroes and villains amidst the dramatic tension of fiery competition. When you listen to this show, you will quickly realize that my conversation with Paul focuses mainly on his creative approach to filmmaking. This conversation will be right up your alley if you are even slightly interested in documentary filmmaking. Paul and I start by talking about his film SlamNation, which I'm happy to say features me performing an improvisational poem about a pig. It's a terrible poem. The film crew asked me to perform something impromptu while serving barbecue at the slam family picnic and softball game on Saturday afternoon before the final competition later that night. I thought a poem about a pig and barbecue might go together, dumb me. Even so, I'm still glad I made my debut in Paul's movie. In this conversation, Paul also discusses three more of his prize-winning documentary films, Power Trip, Blast, and The Front Man. Power Trip is about a failed attempt to establish an American-type power company in Tbilisi, Georgia, in an environment of pervasive corruption, assassination, and street rioting in Tbilisi, Georgia. The story of the chaotic post-Soviet transition is told through culture clash, electricity disconnections, and blackouts. Blast explores both the heartbreak and the glory of trying to unravel the secrets of outer space. Mark Devlin, Ph.D. (the filmmaker's brother) launches revolutionary telescopes on NASA high-altitude balloons. Dangerous, but necessary if he wants to look back in time and reveal a hidden Universe of never-before-seen galaxies. The Front Man is a heartwarming comedy. Six-time Emmy winner and Independent Spirit nominee Paul Devlin paints an intimate portrait that evolves into an epic 27-year journey to discover what success means. Relentless rock' n roller Jim Wood is abrasively funny, revealing surprising insight and intelligence as he struggles to reconcile his wife Christie's desire for a child with pursuing a life making music in a culture where anything short of celebrity is failure. Like I said, if you like storytelling and movie-making, you'll fall in love with this show. Enjoy.

“I hope that film and the story can help people get their heads around these huge ideas that are pretty terrifying and almost hopeless to think about. What can we do? Are we on this track? What have we done to the earth? I think scientists are very much starting to agree that it's getting to the point where it's almost too late. So can humans see that far ahead? Can we understand the track we're on in time? I don't know, but I'm willing to use whatever tools possible to try to help that conversation happen.”Director of photography Alan Jacobsen photographs narrative and documentary projects with an authentic, natural eye and sensitive curiosity. Joining this episode of The Jake Dunlap Show is third generation serial entrepreneur and marketing expert, Erik Huberman, CEO of Hawke Media. In this episode, Jake goes back in time with Erik as they uncover the steps he's taken to build one of the fastest growing marketing consultancies in the US. As a third-generation entrepreneur, Erik knew the kind of shoes he had to fill but remained steadfast - knowing deep inside that he had what it took to make it work. Having grown up in an environment that encouraged him to explore, Erik shares about how much of his qualities were attributed to attending a school that allowed its students to march to the beat of their own drum and how this allowed him to possess an early realization for self-awareness. Being naturally competitive, he knew that his main competitor was himself, he recalls his first entrepreneurial experience reselling beanie babies and ended up earning four grand as an eight-year-old. Erik talks about his first job in high school and why he never wanted to work for someone ever again which prompted him to learn to take things as an independent spirit. While earning his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration at the University of Arizona, he set off to find career options starting in a real estate office, then moving to a sales and marketing company, and on to handling/running a start-up - when he graduated he was faced with the question of what he wanted to do in his life. Erik realized two things: that he was good at building businesses from scratch and had a passion for e-commerce brands. Erik shares how things are run differently at Hawke Media and expands on the importance of changing the traditional approach when it comes to marketing brands, making it more client-centric and authentic. He also touches on the subject of overcoming challenges and how the best way to go about it is by facing it head on.Listen to the full podcast and find out more about Erik Huberman's story of perseverance and finding the next best opportunity. QUOTES:On working: “I want to make money because I deserve to make money. Not because someone thinks I deserve to make money.”On working while still in school: “My thought around working in school was I want to go get a job. That's going to teach me something. That's either going to help me figure out what I want to do. Long-term or give me a skill that I can carry with me with whatever I do.”On the importance of word choice: “I think that taught me so much about sales because there's little word choices and nuance and communication are the difference between getting a deal on the spot on the spot. I honestly think through his volatility, I learned a lot of sales skills.”On making career decisions: “At the end of the day, you do have to make the right choice for you.”On his company's purpose: “There's gotta be a solution here that things can be accessible, but also really great meaning like, and so our mission statement to this day is accessibility to great marketing for everyone.”On running businesses: “Shit is going to happen all the time. You run a business, you're always going to be putting out fires.”In facing challenges: “It's like, if that's actually what's coming. What I do right now, doesn't matter. So let's just lean into it and go for it because if it works: awesome. And if it doesn't, we're probably in a lot bigger problems than, oh, I spent some time on my business. It didn't work out.”More about ErikErik Huberman is the CEO and founder of one of the fastest growing marketing consultancies in the US – Hawke Media, a full-service Outsourced CMO based in Los Angeles, CA that provides guidance, planning, and execution for brands, industries, and business models to grow and expand.
