There have been a number of headlines trending throughout 2025 so far. Tariffs, trade wars, geopolitical tensions... and romance scams. Fake online relationships – better known as catfishes – have existed as long as social media has been around. But the increasing prevalence of AI is making it trickier to tell fact from fiction. One woman in France was conned out of 800,000 Euros after believing she was in a relationship with Oscar winner Brad Pitt, while closer to home, US-based Kiwi actor Martin Henderson has seen his face used as a front for these scams. So how common are these elaborate scams, and what protections can be put in place to better protect vulnerable people? Today on The Front Page, National Cyber Security Centre Threat and Incident Response team lead Tom Roberts is with to discuss what can be done to break up with these scammers. Follow The Front Page on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. It may be Valentine's Day but not everything in love is chocolates and roses. Romance scams are affecting an increasing number of Kiwis, fraudsters crafting elaborate fake relationships and emotional connections in order to convince their victims to send money. Last week the Herald reported on a woman who wasted two years and more than $375,000 on what turned out to be a romance scam with an impersonation of actor Martin Henderson. ANZ's Head of Customer Protection Alan Thomsen told Kerre Woodham that there's a misconception that those who fall victim to romance scams are all over the age of 60, but a third of their victims are under the age of 45. He says that many victims are in a vulnerable state, and it's important for people to stop and pause before committing to anything. ANZ is also making an effort to educate and raise awareness around romance scams, creating a unique rose. The “Scammers Bloom”, is a beautiful long-stemmed rose - the ultimate symbol of love - and while it looks beautiful, once you get closer you realise it smells fishy. The special blooms will be available at their pop-up shop 'Love Stinks' in Ponsonby, Auckland. The bouquets come with a charming collection of Valentine's Day cards which help normalise talking about romance scams, and give people the tips to help look out for and avoid romance scams.

Based on Finn's short film Laura Hasn't Slept (2020), the film stars Sosie Bacon as a therapist who witnesses the bizarre suicide of a patient, then goes through increasingly disturbing and daunting experiences that lead her to believe she is experiencing something supernatural. It also features Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Kal Penn, and Rob Morgan, as well as Caitlin Stasey reprising her role from Laura Hasn't Slept. A feature adaptation of Finn's short was announced in June 2020, and the cast was added in October 2021. Principal photography began that month in New Jersey and ended in November. Originally set for release on the streaming service Paramount+, distributor Paramount Pictures opted to release the film theatrically after positive test screenings. Smile premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 22, 2022, and was released in the United States on September 30. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed over $217 million worldwide on a budget of $17 million. A sequel, Smile 2, is scheduled to be released in October 2024. The Ring is a 2002 American supernatural horror film directed by Gore Verbinski and written by Ehren Kruger. Starring Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, and Brian Cox, the film focuses on Rachel Keller (Watts), a journalist who discovers a cursed videotape that causes its viewers to die seven days later. It is a remake of Hideo Nakata's 1998 film Ring, based on the 1991 novel by Koji Suzuki. The Ring was theatrically released in the United States on October 18, 2002, by DreamWorks Pictures. It was a box-office success, grossing $249.3 million worldwide on a $48 million budget, making it one of the highest-grossing horror remakes of all time. The Ring received mixed-to-positive reviews, with critics in particular praising the atmosphere and visuals, Bojan Bazelli's cinematography, Verbinski's direction and the performances of the cast (particularly Watts). At the 29th Saturn Awards, the film won in two categories: Best Horror Film and Best Actress (for Watts). The film is the first installment of the American Ring series, and is followed by The Ring Two (2005) and Rings (2017). The success of The Ring inspired American remakes of several other Asian and Japanese horror films, including The Grudge (2004) and Dark Water (2005). Plot Teenage girls Katie and Becca discuss an urban legend about a cursed videotape that causes whoever views it to die in one week. That night, Katie, who viewed it one week ago, is killed by an unseen force. At Katie's funeral, her mother asks her sister Rachel, a Seattle-based journalist, to investigate her daughter's death. Rachel discovers that Katie's friends all died in bizarre accidents at the same time as Katie's death. Rachel visits the Shelter Mountain Inn, where Katie and her friends saw the tape. She finds and views the tape; it contains strange and frightening imagery. She then receives a phone call from an unknown caller who whispers, "Seven days". Though initially skeptical, Rachel quickly begins to experience supernatural occurrences linked to the tape.
Show Notes Free Palestine This week we watch one of the scariest movies of the 2000s, Gore Verbinski's The Ring. Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, Shannon Cochran and Brian Cox make a quartet of terrible parents that damage some already damaged children. We learn that you shouldn't hide a kid in a barn or a well, nor should you attempt to pet an animal who clearly doesn't want to be touched. We learn it's good to pay attention to your kids and bad to sleep with your assistant. And finally, we learn that often, the best choice is to mind your own business. With the all-star cast rounded out by Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, Brittany Snow, Owen Campbell, Stephen Ure, and Scott Mescudi, ‘X' paints the screen red when an adult movie crew rent the airBnB from hell from a couple of rural farmers. But does the film hold up to the incredible weight of every reference and homage it crowbars into it's short runtime? Reluctantly, I think saving Shortland Street was the right thing for now. The news on Shorty today is that it's been saved, but it will go down to three episodes a week. What's saved it is taxpayer money: $3 million from NZ On Air and then be eligible for a rebate from the Screen Production Grant which must be about $6 or $7 million. Which means we're pumping in around about $10 million in taxpayer money to save a soap opera. I'm reluctant about this because I generally don't think we should prop up failing businesses. If they can't make a buck it's because not enough people like the product, in which case it should be allowed to die. But... I think there's an exception this time. Because it might just be possible that Shorty may be able to pay its own way again... maybe. The reason I say that is because it's not that Shorty is unpopular, it actually has a lot of people watching. The last figures that I can find are from last year, 79K people in their key demographic watched it on TV2, which doesn't sound that impressive, but then you add in the streaming numbers of TVNZ+: 455K a week. And well, that is impressive. By comparison, at the same time TVNZ News only earned 180K streams, even though the news has got two extra episodes a week, Shorty was beating it by 2.5 times. The problem isn't that it's unpopular. The problem is that TVNZ hasn't figured out how to actually make enough money from the people watching it on TVNZ+. It knows how to get money from TV2 ads, but it doesn't know how to properly monetise online yet. So... Shorty street is only guaranteed for another year. I dunno if that's enough time for TVNZ to figure out how to earn more money on the app, but I hope it does. Because it would be a pity to lose a show that is still watched by that many kiwis, and that has trained some of our best acting talent: Temuera Morrison, KJ Apa, Thomasin McKenzie, Craig Parker, Martin Henderson, Robyn Malcolm. And which is, frankly, is one of the few shows left actually reflecting us back to ourselves. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Keith from Horror Convos joins Caitlin to discuss The Ring (2002), a groundbreaking J-horror remake that many of us found formative. We discuss all kinds of Ring-things: monstrous motherhood, cultural and psychological influences around fear, practical effects, architecture as a storytelling element, color theory, scores, performances, and more. Sillier tangents include: urban legends, breakfast foods, insects, "forever outfits," and a couple great Would You Rathers.

She identifies a woman on the tape: horse breeder Anna Morgan, who killed herself after some of her horses drowned themselves off Moesko Island. Rachel and Noah's young son Aidan ends up watching the tape. Aidan also possesses some supernatural abilities, which he uses to help with Rachel's investigation. Rachel heads for Moesko Island to speak to Anna's widower Richard, while Noah travels to Eola Psychiatric Hospital to view Anna's medical files. Rachel discovers that Anna had adopted a girl, Samara, who possessed the ability to psychically etch images onto objects and into people's minds, tormenting her parents and their horses. Noah finds a psychiatric file on Samara that mentions a missing video record last seen by Richard. Returning to the Morgan home, Rachel finds a birth certificate proving that Samara is the biological child of Richard and Anna. She also finds the missing video, in which Samara explains her powers during a therapy session. Richard insists that Samara is evil and commits suicide by electrocuting himself. Noah and Rachel find a loft in the barn, which the Morgans used to isolate Samara from themselves and the outside world. There is an image of a tree behind the wallpaper; Rachel recognizes it as a tree at the Shelter Mountain Inn.

Director, actor, and screenwriter, Ti West, has been around for a bit working on horror and mumblecore films. He's appeared as an actor in YOU'RE NEXT (2011), he directed the found footage thriller THE SACRAMENT (2013), and did the sequel CABIN FEVER 2: SPRING FEVER (2009). In 2022, he's had success where his two latest films including the slasher film X (2022) was picked up and distributed by A24.In 1979, a group of adult movie filmmakers rent a building on a Texas farm. Their plan is to film their latest movie for the booming pornographic industry. Worried that their profession could upset the farmers, they don't tell the owners of the property their real purpose of being there. We watched The Ring and were treated to one of the most impressive and scary PG-13 movies ever made. @dgoebel00 on Instagram provided this amazing artwork. Follow him and check out his website. https://youtu.be/yzR2GY-ew8I The Ring can be streamed with a Paramount + subscription, or for a nominal rental fee wherever movies are found. Synopsis A videotape that has the power to kill those who view it seems to be at the center of a string of four teenage deaths. Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) is a newspaper reporter who becomes interested in these deaths and takes it on herself to follow up. After she views the tape, Rachel begins to find herself being pulled deeper and deeper down the proverbial rabbit hole that seems to look a lot like a dark and ominous well. Will Rachel be able to crack the story of how this video tape works or will she get more dead little girls than she bargained for? Review Directed by Gore Verbinski, The Ring is the American Remake of the Japanese 1998 film, Ringu. Gore went on to direct all of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, along with a few more big Disney projects. The Ring was a tentpole classic horror movie almost as soon as it was released in 2002. The creepy concept of a video tape that kills was too much for anyone to resist, and the fact that the tape itself is viewed by the audience makes it so much more titillating. The tone of The Ring is deadly serious, and it lands just right in the quiet of your darkened home on a Friday night. It feels morose and hopeless and creepy beyond compare. The tape is so dark and disturbing, but so vague that it taps into some gross center of things that people fear. Watch The RingBuy or Rent on AmazonClick here to Watch on Amazon The heavy lifting in The Ring is left up to the sound design, which is absolutely perfect. So much of this movie is quiet and muted in terms of the ambiance, and the jump scares are so pronounced and shrill that it places you squarely on the edge of your seat and keeps you there. The iconic sound of the video is so unique and terrifying that I can hear it echoing in my nightmares to this day. Naomi Watts and Martin Henderson are so beautiful to look at that it's hard not to worry that they might die at any moment, but somehow it makes sense that the thing to kill them would be a videotape. There are few movies that are held in such high regard as The Ring, which has everything to do with it's ability to resonate eerie terror to all those who watch it. That said, I have always thought, even on my first viewing that at a 1:55:00 runtime it's a little long-winded. The movie certainly takes it's time to slowly unwind the mystery or what happened to Samara. Much of the Samara storyline seems extraneous in an otherwise nearly perfect movie. Score 9/10

X gonna give it to ya in more ways than one. The 2022 Ti West slasher asks us to put our keys in a bowl and see where a hot night in 1979 Texas takes us. Sex and horror are hardly strange bed fellows, but this film manages to put a whole new spin on it. Co-hosts Jamie Roberts and Robert Lendrum talk about the theme of aging and regret. Does this slasher reimagine the genre? Does it check every box and fill every hole? Do all hilly billy murderers have skin problems? Old people have never been more gross in a film that challenges our comfort levels and demands the audience deal with the fact that old people like to f#@! With bloody slasher mayhem unspooling on a porn set, Ti West's latest slice of brutality, X, brings the nudity and gore, but underneath its vintage horror pastiche lies a sex-positive, beating heart that examines the cutting power of jealousy and the unforgiving cruelty of time.
