It's our first FDR of Kink Month 2023, so Capt'n Max & I are set to let our kink flag fly & recap the amazing Abby Martin's art party, which we do—but that's not all we do… Hours before showtime, Hamas attacked Israel, killing 100s of Israelis & taking dozens of hostages in what many call “Israel's 9/11,” its bold ferocity demonstrating Israel's breakdown in so-called “intelligence.” In response, Israeli forces are bombing Gaza, murdering 100s of Palestinians with vengeful vows of war & more war. I'm pretty shaken up about it, so I talk about it, but there's no simple solution to this war or any war, except never to start a war, occupation or apartheid colonization in the first place, no matter how “holy” the land. Warning: Explicit Conversations About Politics, Culture, & S3xuality!  Make Kink Not War! That's the Bonobo Way & my motto every day—especially in the kink-positive month of Kinktober—though wars are not kinky, at least not by my definition, which involves consenting adults only. Indeed, war is the opposite of kink, though gruesome *war p0rn* floods our media. I talk about learning a lot about the brutal apartheid nature of the Zionist occupation of Palestine from none other than Abby Martin whose “Gaza fights for Freedom” & other Empire Files documentaries are excellent reports on the plight of Palestinians. Capt'n Max *discovered* the amazing Abby Martin back in 2014 on the once-great RT (Russian TV), & then I invited her on The Dr. Susan Block Show for a remarkable interview. Last year, Abby & Mike Prysner interviewed Dr. Suzy on their Dosed Show about sex, violence & the Bonobo Way & a couple years earlier, she talked politics & cuckolding on Media Roots with Abby's brother Robbie Martin. Abby & Mike also attended our erotic-verging-on-orgiastic Bonoboville Reunion, so yes, you can see them (mostly in the background) on our ViceTV piece (now over 225K views!) So, we were delighted to join Abby & Mike at their art show & going away party at Queerspace Little Secret.  What a fun time dancing, chatting & ogling Abby's gorgeous abstract art. I was honored that Abby gave me “Hell Yeah,” one of her most beautiful paintings, as a gift. What a good time AND also an aphrodisiac, at least for Max & I. Even though, thx to Max's shingles, we can't touch each other's most intimate places right now, we managed to have a little orgasmic sex right after the party & before this show. Go Bonobos for disabled senior sex! Great music is the soundtrack to great sex, & sweet sounds played a big part in Abby's party. Go Bonobos for Max Collins of Eve 6, Mz Neon, Metal Mother, Televangel + DJs Succubus & Infernx! Music also plays a recurring role in this FDR podcast, starting with Max in the afterglow warbling “I'm in the Mood for Love.” Then moving onto the return of Brady calling in from Texas to sing his new song (part of his upcoming antiwar album), “Just Say No to NATO.” But the best singer is Brady's SUZY Award-winning dog Rufio crooning to the moon, “Just Say Noooo to NATOOooooo.” Other subjects on the Love Train include Olivia Wilde, niece of late great Counterpunch publisher Alex Cockburn – pronounced Cohburn, not cock-burn—though we have a field day with that pronunciation; coconut oil (good for cock burn); GW Bush & the Yale Skull & Boneheads, plastic in our water; & the terrible attacks on Ekolo ya Bonobo. Stay tuned for our arbitration against Zuck the META cuck making mega bucks off our exploitation & then rewarding our hard work with deactivation. And Be Bonobo. Even if we can't stop wars in the Middle East, Ukraine or anywhere in this war-torn world, we can at least make our voices heard - unless we're censored... Well, we can at least Be Bonobo & make peace through pleasure in our own lives. It's a start! Happy Kink Month 2023! It may not seem like it for sooo many reasons, but it really is a better time than ever to… Make Kink Not War. When James Traylor and Max Collins found out that they were both writing a book about author Mickey Spillane, they decided to collaborate rather than compete. For the first time ever, Traylor and Collins have completed the first biography on Spillane. The description reads, “Beginning in 1947 with I, the Jury, and continuing with his next six novels, Spillane quickly amassed a readership in the tens of millions, becoming the bestselling novelist in the history of American publishing. Surrounded by controversy for the overt violence and suggestive sexual content of his iconic Mike Hammer private eye novels, Spillane was loathed by critics but beloved by his readers.” In this interview, the writers talk about the ups and downs of Mickey's life, how the Mike Hammer character led to Jack Reacher and countless other other characters like James Bond, some mysterious parts of Mickey's life, the paperback revolution, and this forty year overnight success of writing this book. Study: Trump's return to Facebook; Buzzfeed moves to AI – Tech Law & Policy this Week

Hey everybody, I’m Joe Miller and here’s what’s going on in the world of tech law & policy this week. ChatGPT is still at the top of headlines this week with Buzzfeed announcing that it’s going to use generative AI to produce “select” content. Buzzfeed’s CEO Jonah Peretti says he wants BuzzFeed to lead the future of AI-powered content. This comes only days after CNET faced scrutiny for using AI to produce content for years. And a lot of writers and journalists are worried about their jobs, as they should be. Prominent BuzzFeed journalist Max Collins told Peretti to “get f*cked.” But shareholders loved the news, rose by just over 85 percent at today’s closing bell to $3.87 per share. And on the education front, NPR reports that a University of Pennsylvania Wharton professor, Ethan Mollick, told them that “everyone is cheating.” This comes after ChatGPT aced an MBA exam earlier last week.. But Mollick decided to go ahead and make using ChatGPT a course requirement. But prominent science journals like Elsevier and Springer Nature are prohibitting ChatGPT from being listed as a co-author. And Google has text to music AI that makes songwriting a cinch with just one or two word prompts. What else? Trump’s back on Facebook. Meta made the decision to reinstate Trump because a company Global Affairs Exec Nick Clegg says enough time has passed since the January 6th insurrection at the US Capitol. On the medical mis and disinformation front, a California judge has blocked the state’s new law that prohibits doctors from giving COVID-19 misinformation. The judge rules that the misinformation standard is too vague.

The two were also joined by Max Collins, frontman for the rock band Eve 6, who has firsthand experience with the abusive practices of the giant corporations that now control the music industry (25:46).Finally, for this week's bonus segment, David sits down with former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Gary Hart for a long-form conversation about the evolution of American politics since the late 1980s, and his new book about saving American democracy (52:11). A rough transcript of this episode is available here.If you'd like access to Lever Time Premium, which includes extended interviews and bonus content, head over to LeverNews.com to become a supporting subscriber. If you'd like to leave a tip for The Lever click the following link. Nearly 25 years later, the Southern California alt-rock giants are back in the zeitgeist, though for decidedly un-nostalgic reasons: The band's Twitter went viral in late 2020 (possibly the only good thing to happen that year) when, seemingly out of nowhere, singer and guitarist Max Collins began using it to serve up unfiltered, hilarious cultural and political commentary.Subsequent offerings have ranged from cold-tweeting politicians to ask them if they “like the heart in a blender song,” to razzing other late-'90s rock stars (looking at you, Stephan Jenkins and Steve Albini), to thoughtful commentary on fair pay for musicians and roasting the centrist Dems.  It's been an unlikely hit, and in addition to releasing new music with Eve 6, Max now pens an advice column with Input Mag and has become something of a rock n roll, post-Bernie public intellectual. We've been wanting to interview Max for a long time, but recently found the perfect excuse: Emilie and Max both wrote an article about John Hinckley Jr., the sexagenarian singer-songwriter who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s in a bid to impress the actor Jodie Foster. He wounded four people, including the President, and was eventually found not guilty by reason of insanity. On July 15, Hinckley finally became a free man after over four decades of restrictions and court-mandated psychiatric care. Max, who is a big fan of Hinckley's music, got him on the phone for his first interview after his unconditional release. Around the same time, Emilie got commissioned to write an essay about the cult fandom around Hinckley and his stripped-down, romantic folk songs, which have garnered him nearly 30,000 subscribers on YouTube. She wanted to examine the fascination with Hinckley's music in the context of the complicated legacy of “outsider music,” a term popularized by WFMU DJ Irwin Chusid in the early 2000s to describe self-taught musicians with unusual backstories (and sometimes psychological disabilities) creating outside the bounds of the traditional music industry. Think: Daniel Johnston, The Shaggs, and Wesley Willis. It's basically the music equivalent of the (similarly othering) category of outsider art.But then a planned series of tour dates Hinckley booked this summer sparked a bunch of controversy online — especially after The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute issued a statement condemning his return to the stage. After the shows got canceled, the piece evolved into an exploration of how the long-running Brooklyn DIY venue Market Hotel, one of the stops on Hinckley's so-called “Redemption Tour,” became a target for the conservative media outrage machine, exemplifying the Right's increasing embrace of the very same cancel-culture tactics it loves to accuse the left of using. What does the controversy around Hinckley's foray into live music tell us about the state of the discourse? Is there such a thing as forgiveness, and redemption, in the middle of a culture war? And how in the world did Eve 6, a band we all grew up watching on MTV, end up reentering the chat as one of the funniest and most influential voices on left-wing Twitter? Much like in his column, Max is a generous and thoughtful conversationalist and was kind enough to indulge our extremely long list of questions. Along the way, he also got deep about some of his own experiences with mental health, including navigating a form of OCD, and why perhaps the appeal of so-called “outsider music” is that we all feel like outsiders in a way sometimes. Love this episode and want to help us produce more of them? You probably know Max Collins as 'the guy from Eve6,' one of the sharpest, funniest, most thoughtful people on Twitter today. You probably don't know that they wrote that album when they were 16/17 years old and that Max has had a wild ride since that song hit #1 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart in 1998. We talk sobriety, mental illness, writing, and second acts.     Max Collins is an American musician, singer, and songwriter who is best known as the lead vocalist, primary songwriter, and bassist of the alternative rock band Eve 6, which he co-founded with Jon Siebels. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a funny pairing that proves that good things do occasionally result from the existence of social media: Steve Albini and Max Collins. You almost certainly know Steve Albini's name and probably some of his work, too, but I'll share this brief summary anyway: As a musician, he has played in some incredibly influential bands, most notably Big Black and Shellac. As a producer/engineer/studio owner, he has helped make records by thousands of small independent bands and several huge mainstream ones, most notably Nirvana, with whom he recorded In Utero. (Other notable credits include PJ Harvey, Pixies, and the list goes on.) Albini is also a poker enthusiast who holds a World Series bracelet, though that part of his life doesn't come up here. Throughout his career, Albini has been an outspoken champion of independence from the major-label system, and even penned a widely shared essay way back in the day about the general shittiness of the mainstream music business. Which makes it kind of funny that he's speaking today with Max Collins, frontman for the band Eve 6, who were sort of a prime example of the major-label machinery in the ‘90s—though through no fault of their own. Signed to a huge deal just out of high school, the band had a pretty massive hit with a song called “Inside Out,” whose chorus features the phrase “heart in a blender.” Eve 6 largely disappeared after the turn of the century, but Collins found a hilarious new way to connect with fans during the pandemic: Twitter. His no-holds-barred tweets are funny and self-effacing, and they gained him an instant following. He refers to himself frequently—even once during this podcast—as the “heart in a blender guy,” and he openly shares his stories about other alt stars of the ‘90s, his opinions on current and older bands, and even some of his personal life. Albini, no stranger to no filter himself, became a fan after the two started playfully sparring about the relative merits of Counting Crows. A Twitter beef was born. If you don't like that phrase, this is not the episode for you. Eve 6 has since started recording and releasing new music, and the two talk a bit about that in this episode. They also get into Eve 6's financial history, the evils of major-label deals in the ‘90s, and for brief moment of non-playfulness, the idea of art as the antidote for the hellscape we all live in. Then there's talk of starting a new beef, this time with Dave Grohl. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Steve Albini and Max Collins for chatting. If you liked what you heard, follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and please rate us—it actually does help. Spotify has been all over the news recently due to the dust up over Joe Rogan, but the company should really be in the headlines for how they screw over musicians. By paying musicians fractions of a cent for their music, the corporate giant rakes in millions while musicians struggle to get by. Max Collins from the band Eve 6 will talk to us about this issue. AndAnd Donald Trump has made it crystal clear that he wanted to steal the 2020 election from Joe Biden - we'll bring you all the latest developments there. if you become a member this week you will hear Farron's interview about How Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was given every opportunity to condemn the actions of neo-Nazis across the state this past week, but he repeatedly failed to do it. DeSantis is making a national name for himself and setting up a potential 2024 Presidential bid, but people outside of the state need to understand how disturbing his behavior really is. Journalist Thomas Kennedy will have that story.

It's the best-selling album we've ever covered on the show and it might hold that record for a very long time, as we review Evanescence's Fallen, a record that sold an absolutely staggering 17 million copies worldwide, won two Grammys, and set numerous Billboard records. But is it any good? Bryan's convinced he's going to hate it, but on the strength of some very good singles and some very good backstory, Bryan finds himself enjoying it more than he thought he might. We learn all about the very messy break-up of the two founding members of the band and we also learn about two of the greatest letters in nu-metal history: the open letter written by Ben Moody 7 years after he left the band, and the one sent by Wind-Up Records to Christian bookstores telling them to stop selling "Fallen". “Are we risking taking our relationships to a messy place, a vulnerable place where you don't know what you're about to say?"   Bio Max Collins is an artist and photographer who specializes in large-scale murals. He first began pasting his street murals illegally, driven by the idea that art should be a democratic process where everyone is free to share and nurture the growth of a city through artistic expression. His work can be found in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland— but especially in his hometown of Buffalo, NY.   Max's consistent desire for authenticity and honesty makes this a beautifully vulnerable interview. The universal ideas he expresses will deeply resonate, even for those who would not call themselves an artist.   Highlights In this episode, we talk about: 1) What social anxiety feels like in various settings 2) How to embrace and lean into hard conversations, even when they're messy 3) How difficult self-promotion can be, especially when your finances are dependent on the work you create 4) How isolating it can feel to be a freelancer and work for yourself 5) Why vulnerability feels so risky     Behind the Scenes I discovered Max's art and his giant murals before I got to know him personally. While the topics we discuss may sound heavy, I was amazed at how light I felt when this conversation ended, simply by listening to someone else's thought process. Max's honest sharing reminded me of how universal many of our struggles are — and how the difficult yet meaningful conversations are always the most fulfilling.   Who should listen? If you're craving deeper connections but aren't sure how to navigate those harder conversations... have a listen.   If you'd like to submit your own question and hear it answered on the show, visit TheBetterQuestions.com.

Chapter 1 It's Mayors Day! Meet Delta Mayor, George Harvie It is Mayors Day on the Simi Sara Show! And my co-host for the rest of the show is the Mayor of Delta, a municipality where traffic gridlock across the Fraser River is a major bugbear for residents. The city council has a big list of parks and recreation projects it would like to see completed, and there's also been a lot of talk about casinos - does the city, and does the province, need yet another casino, at a time when there is so much concern about money laundering here in BC? We'll get into all of that - but first, let's get to know my co-host a little better. His name is George Harvie. Co-host: George Harvie Mayor of Delta   Chapter 2 Transportation in Delta, and the Massey Tunnel The province put the brakes on a planned 10-lane bridge to replace the aging and congested Massey Tunnel in September 2017, then commissioned an independent technical review of the replacement options. That review concluded that the George Massey Tunnel should be replaced, but not by a 10-lane bridge. It suggested the NDP undertake a new feasibility study on how best to improve the aging and congested crossing, including fresh consultation with local First Nations and the TransLink Mayors' Council. Meanwhile, motorists continue to be frustrated every day, as the tunnel fails to keep up with the demands of our growing region. Co-host: George Harvie Mayor of Delta   Chapter 3 Why is Delta City Council supporting a new casino project? Last year Delta City Council gave its approval for a new 500-slot-machine casino for the city. Gateway Casinos says the $70-million project will provide up to 700 new jobs in Delta. Last November, the BC Lottery Commission gave its approval for the project. The City of Richmond had objected to the development because of concerns about increased traffic, and also about crime. Bear in mind: there are lots of concerns in the province right now about money laundering. So is now the right time for another casino project here in Metro Vancouver? Co-host: George Harvie Mayor of Delta   Chapter 4 When people in Delta need help accessing community services, here's who they can turn to We're talking about Delta today, with my co-host, the Mayor of the City, George Harvie. And when people in the city need help in their life, whether it's counselling for family issues, or help getting by with day-to-day burdens like filing taxes, there's one group in the city that's there to help. They're called Deltassist (PRON: Delta Assist) and, their Executive Director joins us in studio to tell us more. Co-host: George Harvie Mayor of Delta Guest: Julie Chadwick Deltassist Executive Director   Chapter 5 Simi's loser and winner of the day Simi's winner The Guru Tegh Bahadur Sikh Temple The shrinking Sikh community in Clearwater has sold its temple and given the $164,000 made from the sale to local charities.
