A live panel discussion at Concordia University, that took place at the SHIFT Centre for Social Transformation and was recorded for broadcast on CKUT 90.3 FM. This discussion took place on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2024 and broadcast on Friday, Feb. 28 from 5-6pm on Off the Hour. With the support of the Local Journalism Initiative through the Community Radio Fund of Canada. This discussion was hosted by Stefan Christoff with an introduction by Christiane Bailey of the Social Justice Centre. This discussion aimed at exploring the realities of the housing crisis facing Montreal today and hear voices from community networks who are struggling for housing justice. This panel is focused on lifting up voices in the arts speaking out about housing rights and also work taking place, in the community, to create alternative institutions that challenge housing as a commodity. Facebook's parent company Meta is blocking all news content in Canada after the government demanded the media giant share profits with news companies. That's a particular problem for people and agencies trying to get news about devastating wildfires in the country. A similar showdown is brewing in California as that state also ponders a revenue-sharing arrangement. The tussle over content affects both Native consumers and Native news operations. Volunteers have kept Bay of Islands Radio up and running for a full decade. But they'll be putting a journalist on the payroll very soon. The non-profit community radio station, based in Corner Brook, has received funding to hire someone full-time for a year. Odette Auger/ Cortes Currents - The following article is an excerpt from a program that was originally aired on Cortes Radio. This program was funded by a grant from the Community Radio Fund of Canada and the Government of Canada's Local Journalism Initiative.This is Odette Auger with Cortes Currents. In the parking lot at Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex, COVID-1919 Ambassadors take in screening checklists, supervise hand sanitizing, as the novice hockey kids arrive at the arena. The ambassadors are basically replacing the parents- without dressing rooms, the kids show up in all their gear, walking through the parking lot with skate guards. They ensure kids hand sanitize before putting on their gloves, and the masked ambassadors take the guards off and space them out 6 feet apart along the hallway in the arena.  CRMHA sends out regular emails outlining COVID-1919 protocols, updates to how this translates to the arena. Assessing how measures were working, making adjustments to trouble shoot. Jeanine Sumner and Jodi Check Broer are two of the covdi19 ambassadors trained to support the novice age group. They share their thoughts and explain how things are different this year.  “Upon the kids returning to play,” says Sumner,  “Parent volunteers, such as ourselves, also known as COVID-19 ambassadors were identified and trained and that included new entry and exit points, no use of the change rooms. The kids were not allowed inside the building due to the capacity COVID-19-19 restrictions in 19 restrictions yet. So wearing masks, hand, sanitization health check screening for all the kids, ambassadors and coaches minimal contact with any inside the facility and arena, thorough disinfection protocols, tracking number of players, coaches, and volunteers.”

There have been three new deaths from COVID 19 in BC since Tuesday. All were seniors in care homes on the lower mainland.There is a new case of COVID-19 in the Island Health Region. There is a new case of COVID-19 on Vancouver Island. The provincial health officer is not announcing exactly where the infected person lives.Currently, there are two active cases on the virus in the Island Health Region. The second case is related to the health centre on the Tsartlip reserve near Victoria.The City of Nanaimo has changed its mind about recording meetings of the Mayor's Task Force on Recovery and Resilience. Provincial emergency orders issued in March, allow municipalities to hold public meetings without the public being present due to COVID-19.The World Health Organization has started looking at how different countries are faring as they lift their lockdown measures. Seniors living in long term care and assisted living homes in BC will soon be allowed visitors.To that end, the province will provide $160 million dollars to public and private care homes to each hire three full-time staff to support safe visits with screening, instructions to visitors and infection control.There have been no deaths from COVID-19 over the past 24 hours. There has been another death from COVID-19 in BC over the past 24 hours and once again, the death was at a long term care home in the Vancouver Coastal Health Region.Care homes are one of the few places in the province that are not opening up under Phase 3 of BC's COVID-19 plan. Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, BC's former children's advocate will investigate a troubling allegation that health care workers played a game to guess the blood alcohol levels of indigenous people in at least one hospital emergency room.Two Nanaimo elementary schools will get seismic upgrades worth $18.8 million dollars. The work will begin at Cilaire Elementary and Pleasant Valley Elementary schools in the summer of 2021, and will be completed by the summer of 2022.A Nanaimo nightclub will open its doors tomorrow night, despite a raging controversy on social media. Nightclubs are not allowed to open in BC, under current health orders.
