Join Curt Jaimungal as he welcomes Harvard physicist Jacob Barandes, who claims quantum mechanics can be reformulated without wave functions, alongside computer scientist Scott Aaronson. Barandes' “indivisible” approach challenges the standard Schrödinger model, and Aaronson offers a healthy dose of skepticism in today's theolocution. Are we on the cusp of a radical rewrite of reality—or just rebranding the same quantum puzzles? As a listener of TOE you can get a special 20% off discount to The Economist and all it has to offer! When we venture into the intricate realms of virtual reality, neuroscience, and the profound wisdom of the Vedantic tradition, we are forced to expand our understanding of reality. So, let's dive deep into these concepts discussed with Deepak Chopra and Dr. Don Hoffman in today's episode! The Enigma of VR and Our Brain: 03:15How can a mere illusion in the form of virtual reality, confined within the digital realms of zeros and ones, impact the physical, intricate networks of our brain? The answer is through experience. Experiences in VR, although virtual, can evoke real emotions, train reflexes, and modify behaviors. Therefore, the possibility of VR-based therapies for mental illnesses and developmental disabilities becomes tangible. This aligns with the principle that our mind, though outside of VR, perceives, learns, and changes through virtual stimulations.Deepak's Heartfelt Initiatives: 06:36Deepak's passion projects have always gravitated towards supporting those with mental health challenges. By intertwining cutting-edge technology like VR with traditional therapeutic approaches, he hopes to bridge the gap between the digital and the real, offering innovative healing solutions for the mind.Limitations of the Divine: 19:39The age-old philosophical question, "What is God's one limit?" nudges us to ponder. If God is omnipotent, then paradoxically, can God create a stone too heavy for Himself to lift? Such paradoxes challenge our understanding of divinity and its constraints, pushing us towards deeper introspection.Don's Breakthrough Moments: 21:00Since we last heard from Don on the podcast, he has experienced revelations that shift paradigms. Embracing new perspectives, Don is steadily dismantling long-held beliefs, reinventing the very fabric of thought itself. The Evolution of Thought in Vedantic Wisdom: 28:05Vedanta, an ancient Indian philosophical system, explains the emergence of thought in four stages:Turiya: The state of pure consciousness, untouched by the material world.Deep Sleep: The unconscious realm where individuality fades.Dream State: The bridge between consciousness and unconsciousness, a realm of illusion.Wakefulness: Our day-to-day conscious state, colored by perceptions and ego. These stages reflect the journey from pure consciousness to our current state of awareness.Entropy and Markovian Dynamics: 34:36While systems inherently possess entropy, it's a misconception that it must always increase in Markovian dynamics. It's the beauty of equilibrium and the dance between order and chaos that allows systems to flourish without succumbing to total disorder. The All-Encompassing Consciousness: 39:05Contrary to our segmented understanding of consciousness, Vedanta propounds that there's no "conscious" versus "unconscious." Every particle, every wave, every vibration is an expression of the universal consciousness. There are no boundaries. The Avatar of Love: 42:15When you see another not as 'other' but as an extension of yourself, an alternate avatar of the same cosmic consciousness, that realization is the essence of true love. Separation is an illusion. When we venture into the intricate realms of virtual reality, neuroscience, and the profound wisdom of the Vedantic tradition, we are forced to expand our understanding of reality. So, let's dive deep into these concepts, taking cues from the timestamps given. The Enigma of VR and Our Brain: 03:15How can a mere illusion in the form of virtual reality, confined within the digital realms of zeros and ones, impact the physical, intricate networks of our brain? Abstract: Songs of the Bengalese finch consist of variable sequences of syllables. The sequences follow probabilistic rules, and can be statistically described by partially observable Markov models (POMMs), which consist of states and probabilistic transitions between them. Each state is associated with a syllable, and one syllable can be associated with multiple states. This multiplicity of syllable to states association distinguishes a POMM from a simple Markov model, in which one syllable is associated with one state. The multiplicity indicates that syllable transitions are context-dependent. Here we present a novel method of inferring a POMM with minimal number of states from a finite number of observed sequences. We apply the method to infer POMMs for songs of six adult male Bengalese finches before and shortly after deafening. Before deafening, the models all require multiple states, but with varying degrees of state multiplicity for individual birds. Deafening reduces the state multiplicity for all birds. For three birds, the models become Markovian, while for the other three, the multiplicity persists for some syllables. These observations indicate that auditory feedback contributes to, but is not the only source of, the context dependencies of syllable transitions in Bengalese finch song. Jean-Philippe Bouchaud, a statistical physicist, is a pioneer in econophysics, a research field applying theories and methods originally developed by physicists in order to solve problems in economics, usually those including uncertainty or stochastic processes and nonlinear dynamics. He is the co-founder and chairman of Capital Fund Management, global asset management using quantitative and scientific approaches to financial markets to invest billions of dollars in a systematic way. He is also the Head of Research of CFM and a professor at École Normale Supérieure. We talk about how ideas in dynamical systems theory and complex systems theory, like the ones developed by the 2021 Physics Nobel prize Giorgio Parisi, but also by Michael Fisher and Benoit Mandelbrot, influenced him. We talk about fat tails, Levy flights, and their emergence in both physical and financial systems. We talk about diffusion phenomena, fractional Brownian motion, hyperchaos, the Hurst exponent, and their application in finance. We touch on the wisdom of crowds, the emergence of intelligence in complex systems, their relations with the efficient market hypothesis, and the limits of Markovian modeling of the financial market. We also try to inform policymaking, both aiming at an optimal level of inequality in society and dealing with systematic incentives to push against what Bret Weinstein calls the personal responsibility vortex, therefore criticizing the invisible hand idea by Adam Smith. We close with the use of Artificial Intelligence techniques in finance, focusing on the relationship between Deep Learning, Kernel Methods, and Random Matrix Theory. Abstract: Animals display characteristic behavioral patterns when performing a task, such as the spiraling of a soaring bird or the surge-and-cast of a male moth searching for a female. Identifying such conserved patterns occurring rarely in noisy behavioral data is key to understanding the behavioral response to a distributed stimulus in unrestrained animals. Existing models seek to describe the dynamics of behavior or segment individual locomotor episodes rather than to identify occasional, transient irregularities that make up the behavioral response. To fill this gap, we develop a lexical, hierarchical model of behavior. We designed an unsupervised algorithm called "BASS" to efficiently identify and segment conserved behavioral action sequences transiently occurring in long behavioral recordings. When applied to navigating larval zebrafish, BASS extracts a dictionary of remarkably long, non-Markovian sequences consisting of repeats and mixtures of slow forward and turn bouts. Applied to a novel chemotaxis assay, BASS uncovers conserved chemotactic strategies deployed by zebrafish to avoid aversive cues consisting of sequences of fast large-angle turns and burst swims. In a simulated dataset of soaring gliders climbing thermals, BASS finds the spiraling patterns characteristic of soaring behavior. In both cases, BASS succeeds in identifying action sequences that are highly conserved but transient in the behavior deployed by freely moving animals. BASS can be easily incorporated into the pipelines of existing behavioral analyses across diverse species, and even more broadly used as a generic algorithm for pattern recognition in low-dimensional sequential data. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.05.07.082271v1?rss=1 Authors: Dimitriadis, S. I., Messaritaki, E. I., Jones, D. K. Abstract: The human brain is a complex network of volumes of tissue (nodes) that are interconnected by white matter tracts (edges). It can be represented as a graph to allow us to use graph theory to gain insight into normal human development and brain disorders. Most graph theoretical metrics measure either whole-network (global) or node-specific (local) properties of the network. However, a critical question in network neuroscience is how nodes cluster together to form communities, each of which possibly plays a specific functional role. Community partition analysis allows us to investigate the mesoscale organization of the brain. Various algorithms have been proposed in the literature, that allow the identification of such communities, with each algorithm resulting in different communities for the network. Those communities also depend on the method used to weigh the edges of the graphs representing the brain networks. In this work, we use the test-retest data from the Human Connectome Project to compare 32 such community detection algorithms, each paired with 7 graph construction schemes, and assess the reproducibility of the resulting community partitions. The reproducibility of community partition depended heavily on both the graph construction scheme and the community detection algorithm. Hard community detection algorithms, via which each node is assigned to only one community, outperformed soft ones, via which each node can be a part of more than one community. The best reproducibility was observed for the graph construction scheme that combines 9 white matter tract metrics paired with the greedy stability optimization algorithm, with either discrete or continuous Markovian chain. This graph-construction scheme / community detection algorithm pair also gave the highest similarity between representative group community affiliation and individual community affiliation. Connector hubs were better reproduced than provincial hubs. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

The secret is finally out: Lynn is on green-light. This episode we swallow many hard truths as the truth of everyone's situation rises to the surface. Dr.Jace realizes if Lynn shares the recipe so save Marcovia’s metas she will be killed. Tobias can be made a vegetable now that he is out of the ASA’s hands. Finally, Jen brings back “the real” Khalil only for his first words ro be “you should have left me to die alone.” Although this was quite a heavy episode, next we will go to Markovburg for ASA/Pearce Family vs Markovian action. Markov chains are a fairly common, and relatively simple, way to statistically model random processes. They have been used in many different domains, ranging from text generation to financial modeling. A popular example is r/SubredditSimulator, which uses Markov chains to automate the creation of content for an entire subreddit. Overall, Markov Chains are conceptually quite intuitive, and are very accessible in that they can be implemented without the use of any advanced statistical or mathematical concepts. They are a great way to start learning about probabilistic modeling and data science techniques. The Markov Chain is a model used to describe a sequence of consecutive events where the probability or chance of an event depends only on the event before it.If a sequence of events exhibits the Markov Property of the reliance on the previous state, then the sequence is called ‘Markovian’ in nature. For some problems in Reinforcement Learning, the actions performed in a particular state is directly related to the previous state, the actions performed in that state and the rewards that the agent receives upon performing said actions. We from BEPEC are ready to help you and make you shift your career at any cost. For more details visit: https://www.bepec.in/machinelearningcourseBepec registration form : https://www.bepec.in/registration-formCheck our youtube channel for more videos and please subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn1U...Check our Instagram page: https://instagram.com/bepec_solutions/Check our Facebook Page : https://www.facebook.com/Bepecsolutions/
Black Lightning: Book of the Apocalypse: Alpha and Omega We're back (well some of us) for the final episodes of Black Lightning and boy is it a doozy. In the final three episodes, they resurrect just as many characters including Lala, who is apparently immortal because Lazarus (played by the inimitable Michael Wright) brought him back from the dead twice. Also back from the dead are Reverend Holt, who doesn't know what a podcast is because he's using it to call people to the church during a riot and Khalil, who Agent Odell has been keeping in a pod along with Wendy and Issa. If all that isn't crazy enough for you, the teleporting meta we met about 5 episodes ago, returns looking for Dr. Jace. Apparently, he's a Markovian mercenary sent to retrieve her because the Markovians have an army of metas in pods they want to launch. And Tobias, who has been building his own metahuman army all season, abandons that plan in a fit of rage so he can terrorize Black Lightning. His plan immediately backfires when the disoriented pod kids just wander off into the streets of Freeland without attacking. So if you're thinking, did ANY of plot we were building this season matter? The answer is no. We've had sixteen episodes just to end up with Jennifer in a suit. Tobias turned out to be a straw man and now the Markovians are the big bad for season 3 even though the show has done little to nothing to introduce them as a credible threat. Black Lightning may not be a lost cause but if we're going to enjoy this show, we're going to have to turn our brain off. We'll see if things change next fall but for right now, it's a wrap for the Pierces. Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! Black Lightning: The Book of Secrets Chapters 1-3 We're winding down folks and unless something changes soon, Black Lightning might have to go the way of Gotham. Unfortunately, "The Book of Secrets" isn't officially done (chapter 4 doesn't drop until March 4th) so we can't definitively say this chapter was better than The Book of Rebellion but watching the show by book was a slight improvement. Tobias disappointed with the reveal of his master plan. While it seemed like he was gearing up for a massive takeover of Freeland, his goals are pretty small potatoes. Tobias plans to rent out the pod kids and a group of special pods from Markovia to the highest bidder. He's gone from dealing drugs to dealing metahumans. We had higher hopes for him too. Anissa is focused on Grace who can't control her powers. Grace leaves town so Anissa uses the resources of the Black Cave to dig into Grace's past. Turns out she was trafficked and forced into prostitution as a child and Grace Choi is the identity she created for herself once she escaped. This is a great potential storyline (especially if Tobias captures Grace and tries to force her into his Rent-A-Meta program) but we're not sure if the writers will capitalize on this or drop the ball again. Lynn and Jefferson are finally getting it together in their personal lives but their professional lives are a mess. Jefferson has the opportunity to get his school back from Massa Lowry but lets him stay in charge because Jefferson doesn't feel that he can fully give his attention to the school. This would be noble if Jefferson and everyone else would stop blaming him for not being around ONCE! One whole time he was being Black Lightning instead of Jefferson Pierce and he almost died and everyone is acting like he's been a consistently negligent principal. Lynn refuses to work with Dr. Jace who has been brought back into the fold since the Markovians want to abduct her and Lynn to work on their secret metahuman project. Because Lynn refuses to be in the same room as Jace, she doesn't realize that Jace is secretly working with Tobias and when Tobias comes to take the pod kids, Jace escapes as well. Currently, Jace is needed because she knows about the pods and she was the scientist who started the Markovian project. Only one of the Markovian pods has been opened and it contains one of the Masters of Disaster, Shakedown (Hosea Chanchez). This partnership is ripe for disaster (no pun intended) since Shakedown is holding a grudge against Jace and Tobias will get rid of anyone who becomes expendable (R.I.P. Todd, we hardly knew ye) Finally, Jenn is holding down the only truly compelling storyline on the show. Despite Reverend Holt's prayers (R.I.P. Rev), having his spine pulled out is the final nail in Khalil's coffin. He dies after a lovely scene where Jenn goes into his mind and gives them one last dance at prom. But now that Khalil is dead, Jenn is filled with a lot of rage. Combined with the fact that she may be more powerful than a nuclear bomb, Perenna tells Jenn she has to get this under control before she literally explodes. Right now, Jenn's struggle to control her powers and her quest for vengeance is the best reason to watch Black Lightning. China's acting is great and for a superhuman teen, Jenn as a character is pretty relatable. We'll see what happens in March as we close out The Book of Secrets but right now, Black Lightning isn't the show we fell in love with even with its moments of fun. Are you here by chance? Does probability exist? Can we decide if the world is deterministic? Is probability an outcome of our ignorance, & are we ‘forced’ to model using probabilities? Is there a trade-off between hardness and randomness? How did statistical modeling & probabilistic reasoning help establish irrefutably that smoking causes cancer? Why is Law of Large Numbers true? What does sampling mean in a world with Big Data? Is Brownian motion invariance principles manifesting themselves in a different space? Is probability theory merely a mathematical model which fits the world ‘very often’? In what sense is quantum mechanical uncertainty different? Can probability help gather knowledge about the world without intervention? Can randomness be generated? Is the best estimate of tomorrow’s (Markovian) weather today’s weather? Is the (need for the) probability of missing the train going to be different in the future? Is DNA sequence random? Would understanding biological systems using probability be a key endeavour for the future? Is it also important to regain a sophisticated understanding of probability besides just calculating? SynTalk thinks about these & more questions using concepts from computer science (Prof. Jaikumar Radhakrishnan, TIFR, Mumbai), mathematics (Prof. Rahul Roy, ISI, New Delhi), & philosophy (Dr. Federica Russo, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands). Quantitative analysis by means of discrete-state stochastic processes is hindered by the well-known phenomenon of state-space explosion, whereby the size of the state space may have an exponential growth with the number of objects in the model. When the stochastic process underlies a Markovian process algebra model, this problem may be alleviated by suitable notions of behavioural equivalence that induce lumping at the underlying continuous-time Markov chain, establishing an exact relation between a potentially much smaller aggregated chain and the original one. However, in the modelling of massively distributed computer systems, even aggregated chains may be still too large for efficient numerical analysis. Recently this problem has been addressed by fluid techniques, where the Markov chain is approximated by a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) whose size does not depend on the number of the objects in the model. The technique has been primarily applied in the case of massively replicated sequential processes with small local state space sizes. This thesis devises two different approaches that broaden the scope of applicability of efficient fluid approximations. Fluid lumpability applies in the case where objects are composites of simple objects, and aggregates the potentially massive, naively constructed ODE system into one whose size is independent from the number of composites in the model. Similarly to quasi and near lumpability, we introduce approximate fluid lumpability that covers ODE systems which can be aggregated after a small perturbation in the parameters. The technique of spatial aggregation, instead, applies to models whose objects perform a random walk on a two-dimensional lattice. Specifically, it is shown that the underlying ODE system, whose size is proportional to the number of the regions, converges to a system of partial differential equations of constant size as the number of regions goes to infinity. This allows for an efficient analysis of large-scale mobile models in continuous space like ad hoc networks and multi-agent systems.
Speaker: Prof. M. Alanyali Abstract: This talk will touch on wireless coexistence issues that arise due to higher spatial density of spectrum usage. We consider a fairness perspective for autonomous scheduling of transmissions by distinct sessions, subject to constraints that are represented by a conflict graph. The emphasis is on randomized backoff-based CSMA algorithms. The resulting transmission dynamics is represented by a Markovian model whose analysis suggests practical challenges in fair sharing of spectrum by distinct sessions that subscribe to a common standard, as well as by those that do not possess a common signaling protocol.

In this thesis we consider recent developments in insurance and electricity financial products. In particular, we investigate the interplay between insurance and finance, and therein the problem of pricing catastrophe insurance options written on a loss index as well as electricity products. Catastrophe insurance options are standardized exchange-traded financial securities based on an underlying index, e.g. a PCS index, that encompasses insurance losses due to natural catastrophes. The PCS index is provided by the Property Claim Services (PCS), a US independent industry authority which estimates catastrophic property damage. The advantages of the catastrophe options in comparison to other capital market insurance solutions are lower transaction costs relative to the re-insurance and minimal credit risk, because of the guarantee of the exchange. The main results of the thesis are fairly realistic models for catastrophe loss indexes and electricity futures markets, where by employing Fourier transform techniques we are able to provide analytical pricing formulas for European type options traded in the markets. For the catastrophe loss index we specify a model, where the initial estimate of each catastrophe loss is re-estimated immediately by a positive martingale starting from the random time of loss occurrence. Significant advantage of this methodology is that it can be applied to loss distributions with heavy tails -- the appropriate tail behavior for catastrophe modeling. The case when the re-estimation factors are given by positive affine martingales is also discussed and a characterization of positive affine local martingales is provided. For electricity futures markets we derive a model, where we can simultaneously model evolution of futures and spot prices. At the same time we have an explicit connection between electricity futures and spot price processes. Furthermore, an important achievement is that the spot price dynamics in this model becomes multi-dimensional Markovian. The Markovian structure is crucial for pricing of path dependent electricity options.

Traditionally, host-based anomaly detection has dealt with system call sequences, but not with system call arguments. We propose a prototype which is capable of detecting anomalous system calls in an execution flow, thus helping in tracing intrusions. Our tool analyzes each argument of the system call, characterizing its contents and comparing it with a model of the content. It is able to cluster system calls and detect "different uses" of the same syscall in different points of different programs. It is also able to build a Markovian model of the sequence, which is then used to trace and flag anomalies. Stefano Zanero received a Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from the Politecnico of Milano technical university, where he is currently spending his post-doc. His current research interests include the development of Intrusion Detection Systems based on unsupervised learning algorithms, security of web applications and computer virology. We use a discrete time analysis, giving necessary and sufficient conditions for the almost sure convergence of ARCH(1) and GARCH(1,1) discrete time models, tosuggest an extension of the (G)ARCH concept to continuous time processes. Our "COGARCH" (continuous time GARCH) model, based on a single background driving Levy process, is different from, though related to, other continuous time stochastic volatility models that have been proposed. The model generalises the essential features of discrete time GARCH processes, and is amenable to further analysis, possessing useful Markovian and stationarity properties.

In this paper we model the life-history of LTC patients using a Markovian multi-state model in order to calculate premiums for a given LTC-plan. Instead of estimating the transition intensities in this model we use the approach suggested by Andersen et al. (2003) for a direct estimation of the transition probabilities. Based on the Aalen-Johansen estimator, an almost unbiased estimator for the transition matrix of a Markovian multi-state model, we calculate so-called pseudo-values, known from Jackknife methods. Further, we assume that the relationship between these pseudo-values and the covariates of our data are given by a GLM with the logit as link-function. Since the GLMs do not allow for correlation between successive observations we use instead the "Generalized Estimating Equations" (GEEs) to estimate the parameters of our regression model. The approach is illustrated using a representative sample from a German LTC portfolio.
This paper studies a game of strategic experimentation with two-armed bandits whose risky arm might yield a payoff only after some exponentially distributed random time. Because of free-riding, there is an inefficiently low level of experimentation in any equilibrium where the players use stationary Markovian strategies with posterior beliefs as the state variable. After characterizing the unique symmetric Markovian equilibrium of the game, which is in mixed strategies, we construct a variety of pure-strategy equilibria. There is no equilibrium where all players use simple cut-off strategies. Equilibria where players switch finitely often between the roles of experimenter and free-rider all lead to the same pattern of information acquisition; the efficiency of these equilibria depends on the way players share the burden of experimentation among them. In equilibria where players switch roles infinitely often, they can acquire an approximately efficient amount of information, but the rate at which it is acquired still remains inefficient; moreover, the expected payoff of an experimenter exhibits the novel feature that it rises as players become more pessimistic. Finally, over the range of beliefs where players use both arms a positive fraction of the time, the symmetric equilibrium is dominated by any asymmetric one in terms of aggregate payoffs.

Abstract: The ability to express and learn temporal sequences is an essential part of learning and memory. Learned temporal sequences are expressed in multiple brain regions and as such there may be common design in the circuits that mediate it. This work proposes a substrate for such representations, via a biophysically realistic network model that can robustly learn and recall discrete sequences of variable order and duration. The model consists of a network of spiking leaky-integrate-and-fire model neurons placed in a modular architecture designed to resemble cortical microcolumns. Learning is performed via a learning rule with 'eligibility traces', which hold a history of synaptic activity before being converted into changes in synaptic strength upon neuromodulator activation. Before training, the network responds to incoming stimuli, and contains no memory of any particular sequence. After training, presentation of only the first element in that sequence is sufficient for the network to recall an entire learned representation of the sequence. An extended version of the model also demonstrates the ability to successfully learn and recall non-Markovian sequences. This model provides a possible framework for biologically realistic sequence learning and memory, and is in agreement with recent experimental results, which have shown sequence dependent plasticity in sensory cortex.
