Episode 65: Nate Smith. One of the greatest drummers in the game, a future member of the Hall of Fame—you already know it's Nate Smith! I had a great time hanging with Nate in this conversation. He's a brilliant musician, composer, thinker, and such a fun guy. We go deep on how he got the gig with Brittany Howard and his work with her, how the Fearless Flyers became a band and how they make records, his practice regimen, personal life, philosophies, working with Paul Simon, going viral, what drives his creativity, etc. Nate is the kind of guy you like even more once you talk with him, so I hope this interview makes you feel like you know him better—and become an even bigger fan. Much love! Here's my talk with Nate Smith. ‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. Dylan and Connor are joined by Sydney James Harcourt (Cats: The Jellicle Ball, Hamilton's Original Broadway Company). The twins can't help but discuss The Traitors (Bob the Drag Queen! Dorinda Medley!) before diving into this wonderful conversation. Sydney James Harcourt is hot off the runway of Cats: The Jellicle Ball! He spills on the experimental magic of staging this Andrew Lloyd Webber revival, the “syndrome” audience members developed post-ball, and his dreams of playing Rum Tum Tugger on Broadway and beyond. This Hell's Kitchen resident also shares his favorite spots in the neighborhood, reminisces on learning to vogue in the clubs, and how Singin' in the Rain led him to Interlochen Arts Academy. Sydney speaks candidly about the “realness” category he's been walking his entire career, being part of Hamilton as it became a global phenomenon, and even his fitness routine as a triple threat. Stick around for chatter about RuPaul's first book “Letting It All Hang Out,” Billie Eilish and Yebba, and Michelle Visage's iconography in the world of ballroom. Featured Musician: Nadim Azzam The Video: [After THE JUMP: Things said.] --------------------- 1. MSU Preview: Offense starts at the top MSU goes as Aidan Chiles, which is in all directions. Some of those interceptions are freshman; some are just really not accurate. They're bringing him along in an interesting way, which is max protection and letting him look downfield. He has a threat in Nick Marsh who's really emerging in the back half of the season. Other targets are just dudes. OL has some big issues on the right side, look cobbled together. Alarming how well they were able to run the ball consistently against Iowa. Michigan needs to keep Chiles in the pocket. 2. MSU Preview: Defense starts at 19:01 They're weak at defensive tackle but cover it up with their burly LBs playing downhill. Other than play-action pass, what can we do Alex? Probably need to get creative. Consider beefing up if they have Hinton back and can run out multiple OTs, but Evan Link as 7th OL? You don't have the dudes who are going to win those matchups as much anymore. They do give up a big long run per week so many we'll have a Mullings beastquake again. Or maybe just once we'll get an Edwards vs Cal Haladay throw. 3. Illinois After Review starts at 34:30 Brian is NOT as mad at Kirk Campbell as he was before going over the film. There were a lot of good ideas in there that his quarterback just couldn't execute. Offensive line seems to be coming together—Gentry was actually *Good*. Priebe is rounding into a 2nd team all-B10 kind of player. Crippen eh but not terrible. Persi might just be what he is. Tuttle was BAD. The overturned interception was to a guy covering grass—it's not even *at* a receiver. Defensively, yeah, don't put them in a terrible situation. Barham had a great game, they covered a lot of the weird stuff that Bielema dumped on them, but were constantly starting drives at midfield or in Michigan territory. Dammit Wink things have largely disappeared save for 2-minute drills, where they're rushing high and playing soft man. 4. Hoops vs Oakland, and Toledo Preview starts at 59:56 Exhibition showed what we wanted to see, which was not many bad shots against a tricky zone defense. The ball didn't stick: when you can see all of these former PGs together they can all get a little creative. It's not going to be no-turnover but they get very good shots, including free throws. About the Musical Artist: Nadim Azzam Says my friend Nadim Azzam, "You've got to hurt to heal." Through painfully honest self-reflection, Nadim Azzam addresses depression, addiction, and the dysfunctional realities of our times with his songs rooted in hope and connectivity. A Jewish Egyptian-Palestinian American born in Vermont, raised in Southeast Michigan and sent off to the Arizona desert, Nadim's life is hard to pin down - as is his music. A singer, rapper, and songwriter who makes his own beats and plays multiple instruments on his tracks, Nadim's new single "$20 Gold Piece" is out now. Nadim was voted Detroit's finalist in NPR's Tiny Desk Contest by WDET, performing at the Concert of Colors. He has opened for The Kid LAROI at Eastern Michigan University, Robert Glasper, Yebba, Raheem DeVaughn and Bilal at the Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre. He has previously traveled the United States with Grammy-nominated reggae artist Matisyahu, on a unity tour to promote peace between Pro-Palestine and Pro-Israel students on American college campuses. Nadim's music video “The Come Up” won Best Hip-Hop/Rap Video and Audience Choice Award at the 2024 Michigan Music Video Awards. Mystery Offer: Ope, there's an Autograph Mystery Offer in this article. They said it couldn't last, so we had to prove them wrong... by making an episode of Strong Songs all about Janet Jackson, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis. It's time to go back to the late 80s, when New Jack Swing was all the rage and a budding superstar named Janet sat down with a pair of Minneapolis producers named Jimmy and Terry to produce some of the most groundbreaking pop music of the decade. This episode takes a look at "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," one of the most complex of their collaborations, and a tune with as many stylistic left-turns as it has orchestra hits.Written by: James Harris III and Terry LewisProduced by: Janet Jackson, Jam & LewisAlbum: Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814, 1989Listen/Buy: Apple Music | Amazon | SpotifyFEATURED/DISCUSSED:“Casey Kasem's American Top 40 intro from the 1980s, via YouTube“Kiss” by Prince from Parade, 1986“Walking on Broken Glass” by Annie Lennox from Diva, 1992“Like a Prayer” by Madonna from Like a Prayer, 1989“Control,” “Nasty,” and “When I Think of You” by Janet Jackson/Jam & Lewis from Control, 1986"Rhythm Nation" and "Miss You Much" from Rhythm Nation 1814, 1989Emu SP-1200 Beatmaking demonstration by Chief Rugged on YouTubeDiscussion of New Jack Swing, which you can learn more about here“Poison” by Bel Biv DeVoe from Poison, 1990“Alice, I Want You Just For Me” by Full Force, produced by Teddy Riley on Full Force, 1985Estelle Caswell's Vox Earworm video about the Orchestra Hit“The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac from Rumors, 1977OUTRO SOLOIST: Dan NervoThis episode's outro soloist is the fantastic Dan Nervo. Food critic and podcaster Grace Dent talks about her experience of losing her parents, returning home to care for her mum in the final period before she died and how this shaped her feelings of grief. Grammy award winning singer-songwriter Yebba (real name Abigail Smith) opens up about the heartbreaking death of her mother and how it influenced her music. And comedian and writer of the BAFTA winning ‘Big Boys, Jack Rooke, discusses his experience of losing his dad as a teenager and how he has channelled his grief into creativity and comedy.Trigger Warning: This episode contains mention of suicide. You can find all the featured episodes in full wherever you get your podcasts. These Join us every week as Patty Wilson & Scott Cowarttalk passionately about the ever-changing real estate market! It's House Talk with a Happy Ending!People often ask whether it is the landlord's or tenant's responsibility. Our answer - follow the lease. The reality is that the property is the landlord's investment. If you have "lawn care included" as part of your rental payment, the landlord must pay and ensure the lawn is done. You cannot return to the tenant complaining that the lawn wasn't done. Make everything a part of your lease. For example, "lawn to be cut on Wednesday the 2nd week of the month". The tenant signs the lease. Ensure the lawn gets cut that day or provide notice for another day. If the tenant does not permit lawn care to be done... you send out a notice of compliance and follow through.www.jointhebrokerage.com - get your license with the US! We continue our Season of Pleasure with this conversation with high school students Aleya, Kyree and their college instructors Beylul and Jill, who learn and teach at the Early College Academy Program with Coolidge High School and Trinity University in Washington, D.C. They share about the abundant pleasure that emerges when we learn in community, seek to see ourselves and each other in our teaching, and root ourselves in education as the practice of freedom. If pleasure can happen in the classroom, what does this look and sound like? We invite you to share your reflections. What can pleasure look and feel like in spaces of education? What is bringing you pleasure and rest this month? Send your thoughts to us at us@dancingondesks.org, leave an audio message, or slide into our DMs on IG @dancingondesks. Ryan Allen Gray is a musical Artist currently based in Nashville TN. Growing up, Ryan idolized iconic artists including Beyonce, Phil Collins, Usher, NSYNC, and The Backstreet Boys. Now he studies at the feet of artists like Yebba, Leon Bridges, and Labrinth. Ryan studied Musical Theatre and Acting at East Carolina University before making the big move to New York City in 2012. He started his music career with an LGBTQ performance group called Shirley House in New York. He was part of the group for over 5 years. Ryan has performed in renown music venues such as Sleep No More, The Peppermint Club, The Rainbow Room, Gramercy Theatre, The Cutting Room, Pianos, and Mercury Lounge. He has also worked in TV and Film and has been featured in off-Broadway productions in NYC such as Rock N Roll Debauchery. Ryan has been lucky to partner with folks including Lance Bass, Lisa Vanderpump and Launch Pad to curate live music events for a good cause. Ryan moved to Nashville, TN in 2022 to write and produce original music for his debut solo artist project with themes that lend themselves to queer narratives. Ryan was inspired to write his debut single “Oh My God” by the current political climate surrounding LGBTQIA rights around the world. More specifically the recent legislation and discourse in Tennessee where he is currently based. “Oh My God” is a reflection on Ryan's own lived experience growing up as a Queer person in rural North Carolina. It is a prayer from a Queer person's perspective. The song is also meant to act as an invitation to a larger conversation about the meaning and nature of God, and the role of religion in shaping how we see and treat each other as human beings. His most Recent Release is a song called “Snake Charmer” It is the story of the Narcissist and the Empath. It was inspired by themes of past relationships in Ryan's personal life. You can find “Snake Charmer” on all streaming platforms with the Official Music Video on Youtube.
Today we are joined by Erin, the soulful and extremely talented vocalist from RVA's Erin & The Wildfire. The band started out as four college friends in Charlottesville, VA making music just for the fun of it. Today they have grown into a flourishing decade long musical experience with an idie-pop flair with influences from Emily King, D'Angelo, YEBBA, Vulfpeck, and Donny Hathaway. The band also includes Ryan Lipps on guitar, Nick Quillen on drums, Matt Woods on bass and Stephen Roach on keys.Erin & The Wildfire create their own music with deeply personal lyrics that mainly focus on Erin's journey with struggles with body acceptance and self-love but also touch on climate change, fighting the patriarchy and more. The band strives to make their shows a safe space for all ages and kinds of people.Their second full-length album, Touchy Feely was released April 1, 2022 and recorded in the Summer of 2021, after nearly a year and a half of virtual songwriting and collaboration during the global pandemic. The new release, named one of Style Weekly's most-anticipated local albums of 2022, was produced by acclaimed songwriter and producer Matthew E. White (Natalie Prass). The meticulous production, impeccable songwriting, and sensual vocals are present as ever on an album that polishes the signature style introduced by their popular single “Shape” in 2020.E&TW have also made appearances at some of the largest festivals on the East Coast including Suwannee Rising, LOCKN', FloydFest, CMJ, RoosterWalk, and more.Support Erin & The Wildfire:https://www.erinandthewildfire.com/https://www.instagram.com/erinandthewildfire/https://www.facebook.com/ErinandtheWildfire/https://twitter.com/ErinAndWildfirehttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCA8j8JBYzPOKZrrB7xwweRQhttps://music.apple.com/us/artist/erin-the-wildfire/727140636https://soundcloud.com/erinandthewildfirehttps://www.tiktok.com/@erinandthewildfirehttps://open.spotify.com/artist/03NHhY1mdWC3Hf9uJEnomj?si=W34dC8EkR0uy3YYgGx2z3QOur sponsor:Maya's Belly Dancing

In this episode, Wellington and Savon are back to discuss the Bengals beating the Bills, Philadelphia getting past Dallas again and C.J. Stroud's stellar rookie start. Next up, they analyze the dominance of the Ravens, the Chiefs winning in different ways and Alabama's Jalen Milroe getting more comfortable, and their win vs. LSU plus the breaking news of Jim Harbaugh's three-game suspension due to the sign-stealing scandal. For their NBA topics, they highlight OKC's impressive start to the season, Milwaukee's regression, and the Mavericks clicking on all cylinders. In the second half, Wellington and Savon are joined by first-time guest Joe Pizzolato, a guitarist who has played for Kelly Price, Hans Williams, and The Shady Recruits to review Butcher Browns's new album Solar Music and The Alchemist's Flying High, Part 2 EP. They also discuss their disappointment and lack of interest in the new Jeezy double album and review Arin Ray's Phases III EP. Finally, they give their personal R&B Mount Rushmore, review Benny the Butcher and Lil Wayne's "Big Dog" single and Yebba's new single "Waterfall (I Adore You)".In the last half, Wellington and Savon review the original Candyman, the 1992 supernatural horror film, written and directed by Bernard Rose and starring Virginia Madsen, Tony Todd, Xander Berkeley, and Kasi Lemmons. They start off by discussing how this was an effective, chilling tale that had an interesting premise. They also analyze how the plot had narratives that keep the viewer hooked, it perfectly incorporating social issues and it having the perfect balance between mystery and gore.
Ciara got crunk. Toni tore up the charts. Yebba yearned for her mama. This week we're sharing some of our favorite debuts from some of our favorite artists. If the tenant does not permit lawn care to be done... you send out a notice of compliance and follow through. www.jointhebrokerage.com - get your license with the US! For today's episode, I welcome indie soul-pop artist, verse poet, and teaching artist Raegan Sealy to the studio to discuss her award-winning work in the creative non-profit space, our unironic love of cheesy retro pop hits, the endless rabbit hole of completely different songs that sound exactly the same, and how art can save lives. ✨ MORE ABOUT RAEGAN SEALY ✨Raegan Sealy is committed to storytelling through her wit and layered metaphors. Outside of music, Sealy is an advocate and teaching artist. She received a Fulbright Scholarship in 2015, one of the most prestigious academic scholarships in the world, along with her MFA from The New School. She gave the first official TED Talk entirely in rhyming verse in 2019. Now based in Brooklyn, Sealy takes inspiration from a diverse range of artists from the Arctic Monkeys and Lana Del Rey to Yebba, Self Esteem, and Marina – beautifully fusing her musical and writing talents to share her life experiences as a soul-pop singer-songwriter.✨ KEEP UP TO DATE WITH RAEGAN SEALY ✨Web: https://www.raegansealy.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/raegansealy/Twitter: https://twitter.com/RaeganSealySpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1XCQotsnHj0EAEZH7dfTP8?si=LkacTRNxS0GOPdPHYPGs2QApple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/raegan-sealy/1449311847YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/raegansealy✨ CONNECT WITH IZZY ✨YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv6SBgiYCpYbx9BOYNefkIgWebsite: https://agrrrlstwosoundcents.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/agrrrlstwosoundcents/Twitter: https://twitter.com/grrrlsoundcents

Lauren Minear is a Nashville-raised singer-songwriter set to release her debut album, Invisible Woman, out October 14. She is steeped in the vulnerability of Nashville soul, the real deal; tender and passionate, yet raw and brutally honest songwriting in the lineage of Joni Mitchell, Lucinda Williams, and Gillian Welch. Like these women, Lauren wears her heart on her sleeve as she explores the corners of love through a fragile lens of self-awareness, evoking the likes of Anais Mitchell, Taylor Swift, and Natalie Merchant.Born in Manhattan, Lauren's family moved to Nashville, where she grew up, spending her formative years sharing her parents' love of Brooks & Dunn, KD Lang, Garth Brooks, and Patsy Cline. She also immersed herself in the sounds from the country music radio stations they tuned into on their regular drives from the city to New Orleans to visit her grandparents and the southern soul there, radiating out of The Big Easy.Memorizing songs by Faith Hill, Amy Grant, Mariah Carey, and Shania Twain, and with Nashville songwriting seemingly steeped in her blood, Lauren Minear wrote her first song, "Daddy's Little Girl," at 14 years old, and soon found herself interning on Music Row at Major Bob Music, at Sony ATV Publishing and in the studio with Steve Earle as well as performing and recording an EP with guitarist George Marinelli (Bonnie Raitt). Now a Mother of two little boys and again living in New York with Madi Diaz, Brandi Carlile, Allison Russell, and YEBBA on her stereo, Lauren's journey has been far from just musical; her life has given her a rich and varied tapestry of experiences from which to draw as a songwriter. A transformative journey that has given her confidence and power, Lauren's artistry and songwriting skills were rekindled when she became a mother. This process changed her perception of the world and herself and brought her back to music and the spiritual therapy of creativity.

Yebba had a huge year in 2016. The singer and songwriter's career was taking off. But 2016 was also the year that something awful happened: Yebba's mother died by suicide. And that changed everything in her life. In this encore chat from 2021, former host Sam Sanders and Yebba discuss the emotional toll it took to make her recent album Dawn, growing up in the church, and shedding old beliefs while making room for new ones. You can follow us on Twitter @NPRItsBeenAMin and email us at ibam@npr.org.
Let the record show that Trevor is out this week because he was attending a John Mayer show (featuring previous Substance Shoutout recipient Yebba) and not all the bad guesses that Philip & Vincent came up with. We thought that we'd maybe do a Topic Toss Up show when we started recording but it quickly became apparent that we'd be spending the whole episode on the most recent Julie Roys article about the abuse and cover ups at John MacArthur's church, Grace Community Church. To be clear, while we believe that the testimonies, documents, and facts show that John MacArthur and GCC both handled and are currently handling this in an extremely inappropriate, harmful, and ultimately ungodly manner, our goal is not to simply target and "take down" their character or ministry. Hopefully, shining a light on such horrific things will be a catalyst to humility and accountability and eventual repentance, from JMac & GCC as well as untold numbers of other churches with similar underlying problems that lead to similar devastating situations. Your feedback on this issue is more than welcome! We encourage you to read the report in its entirety, listen to our full discussion, and then send us a DM, email, or voicemail at your convenience.
