Jesús Ramos-Kittrell is an assistant professor of Musicology at the University of Oregon. His research covers the early modern period and more current analyses of globalization, merging music studies with social history, cultural studies, and literary theory. Ramos-Kittrell's monograph Playing in the Cathedral: Music, Race, and Status in New Spain was published by Oxford University Press in 2016. His edited volume Decentering the Nation: Music, Mexicanidad, and Globalization, published in 2020, won the Society for Ethnomusicology's 2021 Ellen Koskoff Edited Volume Prize.

Definir qué es la mexicanidad o qué nos hace ser mexicanos no es tarea fácil. Nuestra historia, con pasado y presente indígena, las expresiones culturales, la comida, la música, las tradiciones, así como la participación de las y los mexicanos que se destacan por sus acciones y triunfos en el mundo, son piezas clave al hablar de qué nos da identidad, qué nos une y nos hace sentir orgullosos de ser parte de esta nación. Hoy en Diálogos Sociedad hablemos de la "Mexicanidad que nos une y nos identifica".

El antihispanismo mexicano que el actual Presidente ha sacado a relucir no es de origen indígena, mestizo, ni español.

Desde los primeros minutos de este miércoles 08 de septiembre, Maru Campos arribó al Palacio Estatal de Gobierno para firmar de frente al gobernador saliente Javier Corral, el Acta de Transición, momento que, por cierto, causó bastante expectativa, sobre todo por los enfrentamientos que sostuvieron durante los últimos meses. María Eugenia Campos Galván tomó protesta como la primera gobernadora electa en el estado de Chihuahua, teniendo como sede la Plaza de la Mexicanidad en Ciudad Juárez, en un evento que estuvo enmarcado, por un lado, por las protestas del sector opositor en Chihuahua. Mientras que en el discurso oficial registró el respaldo por parte del secretario de Agricultura y Desarrollo Rural, Víctor Manuel Villalobos, quien estuvo en el presídium como representante del presidente, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Dentro de su apertura, la mandataria estatal presentó las 10 acciones con las que su gobierno atacará y buscará sanear las finanzas del Estado, entre las que destacan:·        La disminución de créditos a corto plazo, ·        Un agresivo ajuste presupuestal en las diferentes dependencias, ·        Afirmando que, en los primeros tres años, el gobierno estatal podría alcanzar un balance sostenible, es decir, con cero déficit presupuestalOtro de los momentos a destacar durante su presentación fue el tiempo dedicado a la administración saliente, asegurando que sería la primera y única vez que utilizaba tiempo para dimensionar las condiciones en las que el Estado había sido entregado. Advirtió que el gobierno de Corral había utilizado de manera indebida recurso por hasta 1,800 millones de pesos, correspondientes a la nueva administración, así como el uso de 800 millones de pesos del fondo carretero, sin la autorización del Congreso del Estado. Durante su toma de protesta nombró a Oscar Ibáñez, como representante del Gobierno del Estado en Ciudad Juárez y a Clara Torres Armendáriz como coordinadora de estancias infantiles, quienes se sumaron al Gabinete previamente anunciado, en un grupo que combina personajes que la acompañaron durante su paso por el gobierno municipal y actores que formaron parte del bloque electoral con el que llegó a la gubernatura. Una vez recorridos los primeros días del gobierno marucampista, nos preguntamos:  ¿Cuáles son las expectativas que levanta el nuevo gobierno y hasta donde está obligado a mejorar las condiciones del estado?

Comparative analysis of two big exhibits: Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving at The Brooklyn Museum, displaying her artwork alongside personal possessions, which had been stored in the Casa Azul, (translated as the "Blue House") her longtime Mexico City home; and Nari Ward: We The People at The New Musuem, which features over thirty sculptures, paintings, videos, and large-scale installations from throughout Ward’s twenty-five-year career, highlighting his status as one of the most important and influential sculptors working today. Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving at The Brooklyn MuseumOn view through May 12Curated by Circe Henestrosa this is the first exhibition in the United States to display a collection of Kahlo’s clothing and other personal possessions. They are displayed alongside paintings, drawings, photographs, related historical films and ephemera, as well as works from the Brooklyn museum’s holdings of Mesoamerican art.  The examples of Kahlo’s personal artifacts in the exhibit, which had been stored in the Casa Azul, (translated as the "Blue House") her longtime Mexico City home, are intended to shed a new light on her crafted personal and public appearance and identity, which reflect her cultural heritage and political beliefs, while also addressing her physical disabilities. Friday Kahlo was born in Coyoacán, a suburb south of Mexico City in 1907.  Her work intertwines narratives of Mexican folk customs and Roman Catholic iconography to create works that are defined through her heritage, ethnicity, disability, and her political views. Her work is exemplified by uncompromising honesty, searching through the self-portraiture self-scrutiny and self-reflection. Kahlo was an activist during the Mexican revolutions of the early 1920s. Ministry of Education launched Mexican Muralist Movement and in 1922 Kahlo enrolled in National preparatory School where Diego Rivera was working on his first commission. She joined a Communist party as teenager in 1925 where, along with her husband Rivera, lead the Union of Mexican Technical Workers, Painters, and Sculptors. Like other artists within Mexico during the era, Kahlo infused her work with “Mexicanidad,” an identification with Mexico’s distinct national history, traditions, culture, and natural environment, but she did so in a much more personal way. Nari Ward: We The People  at The New Musuem On view through May 26 Curated by Gary Carrion-Murayari, Kraus Family Curator; Massimiliano Gioni, Edlis Neeson Artistic Director and Helga Chrisoffersen, the exhibit features over thirty sculptures, paintings, videos, and large-scale installations from throughout Ward’s twenty-five-year career, highlighting his status as one of the most important and influential sculptors working today. Ward relies on research into specific histories and sites to uncover connections among geographically and culturally disparate communities and to explore the tension between tradition and transformation.   Nari Ward was born in 1963, in St. Andrew, Jamaica and is known for his sculptural installations composed of discarded material found and collected in his neighborhood. Since the early 1990s, Ward has produced his works by accumulating staggering amounts of humble materials and repurposing them in consistently surprising ways. He has repurposed objects such as baby strollers, shopping carts, bottles, doors, television sets, cash registers and shoelaces, among other materials. Ward re-contextualizes these found objects in thought-provoking juxtapositions that create complex, metaphorical meanings to confront social and political issues surrounding race, poverty, and consumer culture.

In this episode, Dolores Del Río becomes a transnational superstar when she undergoes a makeover where she seemingly leaves behind her Mexicanidad and assumes a Spanish identity. Interestingly, this parallels Southern California's own transformation, which covered over its Mexican past in favor of a mythical Spanish heritage.

Riggen’s popular film “La misma luna” (2007) has been praised as a heartwarming film that humanizes undocumented immigrants for American audiences and, for Mexican audiences, deviates from typical immigration narratives by focusing on women and children as immigrants rather than men. Despite this seemingly progressive intentionality, St-Georges argues that Riggen’s film is exceedingly conservative in its portrayal of mexicanidad as not only inescapably patriarchal, but “naturally” so. Mexico’s ruling class has a vested interest in reaffirming mexicanidad as biological, and therefore, politically incontestable. By selling mexicanidad in a transnational context as a racial essence under constant threat by Anglo-American hegemony, hegemonic institutions within Mexico create the illusion of national and ethnic unity, thus erasing any and all internal racism and classism. In “La misma luna,” the characters’ race and gender performances work in tandem to naturalize prescribed notions of national identity and reaffirm the bourgeois and politically-limiting mandate to be a “good” Mexican by being a “good” (wo)man, equating the imperative to remain true to one’s nationality to the allegedly unproblematic imperative to remain true to one’s biology. Additionally, membership into mexicanidad is reinscribed as contingent upon neoliberal practices of consumerism, up to and including viewing the film itself.

This week on StoryWeb: Frida Kahlo’s painting The Two Fridas. Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is known for her stunning self-portraits. You might not think of her immediately as a painter who tells stories through her art. Indeed, you could be forgiven if you think of her husband, muralist Diego Rivera, as the more narrative painter of the two. After all, his paintings told tales of the Mexican Revolution. But Kahlo’s paintings tell a tale – the same tale – over and over again, nearly obsessively, as if Kahlo had a compulsive need to share her story. For the tale she told in so many of her paintings was the devastating effect a serious bus accident had on her body and her simultaneous refusal to let that accident define her life. The accident she endured – and the injuries that resulted – are almost too gruesome to imagine. As a university student, she was on a bus when it collided with a streetcar. Several people were killed, and though Kahlo survived, she suffered an almost incomprehensible injury: she was impaled – through her pelvis – on an iron handrail. Kahlo spent the rest of her life recovering from the accident. She was eighteen when she was injured. She was forty-seven when she died. In those intervening decades, she experienced excruciating pain and was sometimes confined to plaster corsets that left her lying on her back for months at a time. As one of her friends said, Kahlo “lived dying.” Though Kahlo had been at the university to prepare for medical school, during her long recovery she found herself drawn to painting. Ultimately, she was extremely driven to be a painter, and even though she was flat on her back for months at a time, she rigged up a mirror and a canvas and painted portraits of herself as she appeared lying in bed. Of her approximately two hundred paintings, many were self-portraits – and these are the images that stay with us today. She said, “I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.” One of the most compelling of her many self-portraits is “The Two Fridas,” a double self-portrait she painted in 1939, the year she was divorced from Diego Rivera (before remarrying him in 1940). While most of Kahlo’s paintings were small (precisely the opposite of her husband’s grand murals), “The Two Fridas” was her first large-scale painting. It was also the painting for which she received the most money in her lifetime. The painting indicates a split in Kahlo’s identity. The Frida on the left appears in a Victorian white dress, representing, some art historians have suggested, her paternal German heritage and her European-influenced, elite, privileged upbringing. The Frida on the right appears in the traditional indigenous clothing of a Mexican peasant, suggesting her maternal Mestiza ancestry, which she embraced as a key part of her involvement in the Mexican Revolution. Many Mexican women artists and intellectuals were also dressing in Mexican peasant clothing to emphasize their indigenous ancestry. Dressing this way was an immediate, powerfully visual way to declare one’s allegiance to the Mexican Revolution. Kahlo became known in her art for depicting herself in traditional clothing – and very well known in her life for her embrace of indigenous clothing and accessories. She wore long and colorful skirts and dresses, elaborate headdresses in her hair, and striking traditional jewelry. The reason for the indigenous clothing and jewelry is not hard to understand. The Mexicanidad movement was rejecting European colonialism and elevating the traditional folk culture of Mexico. As Kahlo said, she wished “to be worthy, with my paintings, of the people to whom I belong and to the ideas which strengthen me.” A striking element in The Two Fridas is the broken blood vessel that connects the hearts of the two Fridas. It is not hard to see Kahlo’s references to her life of constant pain and suffering, a life that was marked by thirty-two separate surgeries to correct the injuries she sustained during the bus accident. Kahlo also indicated that the painting was a way of mourning her separation from Diego Rivera, to make vivid her broken heart, the feeling of being split in two. The Frida in the white dress may be independent and fierce, but the traditional Frida – as encouraged by her husband, whose portrait she holds in her hand – has embraced a revolutionary identity. Which Frida is the real Frida? This search for self-identity was at the center of so much of Kahlo’s work throughout her life. The fact that the two Fridas are set against the background of an intensely stormy sky indicates that this quest for self-understanding caused a great deal of turmoil for Kahlo. To learn more about Kahlo, you’ll definitely want to watch Frida, a 2002 film starring Salma Hayek as the artist. The film is a good introduction to Kahlo’s larger-than-life tale: her accident and its aftermath; her stormy marriage to Rivera, who was more than twenty years her senior and a very famous artist when he met the then-unknown Kahlo; his love affairs as well as hers, including one with Leon Trotsky; and her ability to hold court and be a very powerful and commanding presence despite her physical limitations. More than anything, though, Frida will introduce you to Kahlo’s marvelous work as a painter. Another interesting take on the couple known by the Mexican press simply as “Diego and Frida” is Barbara Kingsolver’s novel The Lacuna. Told from the perspective of a fictional assistant to the artists, the novel offers a bird’s-eye view of the famous pair. While the petite and physically frail Kahlo was largely overshadowed (both literally and figuratively) by her near giant of a husband, interest in her work surged in the late 1970s and has only gained momentum in the years since. The resulting cultural phenomenon is sometimes called “Fridamania” – as her face, her paintings, and her story have swept popular culture. Today, you can buy not only Frida Kahlo posters but also Frida Kahlo home furnishings, hair accessories, and clothes. You can easily find a shower curtain, an action figure, a magnetic dress-up play set, socks, and of course, calendars featuring images from her various self-portraits. Interestingly, the Frida Kahlo Corporation controls access to images of the famed artist. Through the corporation, you can get credit cards, tequilla, and more – all emblazoned with Kahlo’s licensed image.
