Since synthetic materials came on the scene almost a century ago, they have grown to become the most popular choice for apparel. But the prevalence of polyester and other polymer-based fibers has come with a tiny yet pervasive problem: microplastics. Textiles are a key contributor to microplastic pollution, as tiny plastic particles break off and enter the air and water, posing harms to humans and other living things. Polyester and other synthetics are also persistent in the environment, since microplastics and garments themselves are not readily biodegradable.  “What do we do about this plastic and where this plastic ends up? And what does it even mean to the environment as well as to our own health?” said Dr. Jesse Daystar, chief sustainability officer and vice president, sustainability at the not-for-profit research and promotion organization Cotton Incorporated. “The world and consumers are sort of waking up to the fact that this is an issue.” In this episode, Daystar and Yvonne Johnson, senior director, product development at Cotton Incorporated, speak with Jasmin Malik Chua, sourcing and labor editor at Sourcing Journal, about Why natural fibers are a better, more sustainable choice and what will finally move the industry away from polymer-based fibers. After a personal encounter with the profound calming effects of grounding on her colicky baby, she was inspired to backtrack to her medical roots to scour medical literature and reinterpret the results in the context of grounding. Dr. Laura's keen research skills coupled with her first-hand observations led her to become a leading proponent of grounding, educating masses with crucial knowledge derived from double-blind placebo studies on the transformative healing power of this simple practice. The key moments in this episode are: 00:00:00 - Introduction to Grounding, 00:02:13 - Dr. Laura's Journey into Holistic Medicine, 00:05:25 - Understanding the Electrical Conductivity of the Body, 00:08:54 - The Power of Grounding, 00:13:47 - The Importance of Earth's Electrical Output, 00:18:45 - Grounding in Urban Environments, 00:22:35 - Addressing Detox Reactions to Grounding, 00:25:05 - The Impact of EMFs on the Body, 00:26:21 - Solutions for Electrosensitivity, 00:27:20 - Benefits of Being Electrosensitive, 00:28:21 - Impact of EMFs on Fertility, 00:33:14 - Thoughts on PEMF Beds, 00:39:08 - The Importance of Natural Materials in Grounding, 00:40:13 - The Intuitive Connection Between Grounding and Nature, 00:40:45 - Potential Negative Impact of Grounding Tools on Electrosensitive Individuals, 00:42:42 - Grounding in Urban Environments, 00:49:05 - Importance of Moisture for Grounding, 00:50:13 - Moisturizing for Grounding, 00:51:16 - Conductivity of Bark and Grounding, 00:53:18 - Grounding and Intuition, 01:01:10 - The Earth's Role in Health Regulation, 01:01:52 - Natural Remedies and Surprising Results, 01:02:48 - Conventional Medicine and Health, 01:03:31 - The Impact of Earth's Electromagnetic Field, 01:05:26 - Where to Find Dr. Laura Koniver's Work, ____________________________________________ This video is not medical advice & as a supporter to you and your health journey - I encourage you to monitor your labs and work with a professional! ________________________________________ Get all my free guides and product recommendations to get started on your journey! https://www.sarahkleinerwellness.com/all-free-resources Use code YOGI for a discount on Blue Blockers at vivarays.com/carnivoreyogi Use code YOGI or YOGI12 for a discount at www.upgradedformulas.com Check out all my courses to understand how to improve your mitochondrial health & experience long lasting health! Drawn towards the critical intersections of sustainable living, genetically modified organisms, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds, I found my purpose within the realm of environmental sustainability. I was alarmed by the reality of our food systems and living spaces acting as contributors to illness rather than wellness. This insight led me to explore the potential for our everyday environments, from food to housing, to not just sustain, but enhance human well-being. My journey into the world of sustainable architecture, heated floors, and Mike Reynolds' revolutionary 'Earthship Biotecture' sparked an unwavering belief in our ability to design buildings that nourish life.My passion for sustainability evolved into a focus on regenerative agriculture, particularly drawn to the principles of permaculture. From anaerobic methane digesters to aquaponics, tree bogs, rocket mass heaters, market gardens, and eco-system planning, I saw opportunities to redesign the systems that support our daily lives. In 2009, I swapped my aircraft mechanic hat for the hat of an inventor, focusing my efforts on concept development. This path led to the creation of my own sustainable product development and manufacturing company, Natural Materials Unlimited, in 2015. Located in Poland, we specialize in designing products and accessories using sustainable cellulose sources like linen, hemp, and tree-free paper. My commitment to fostering environmental health through sustainable design drives my work, as I believe passionately in the power of environmentally conscious business practices to heal the planet and improve our lives. Seth Gebel is a mountain biker and trail builder living in Missouri. His popular YouTube channel, Backyard Trail Builds, shows how he builds beautiful trail features like ramps, skinnies, and bridges using natural materials. In this episode we ask: Tell us how you got into mountain biking, and trail building. You've been building at Howler Bike Park this year. What were you working on there? How much of your time do you spend building on your own land versus paid projects for others? Where did you learn your carpentry skills? Is there a science to building features that are fun to ride, or is it guess-and-check? Have you had to progress your bike skills to keep up with your builds? You use a lot of natural wood as opposed to cut lumber, which seems to be pretty time consuming. Why make the effort? Is longevity a concern when building features out of wood? Are there things you can do to ensure features remain safe and durable for many seasons? Do you enjoy riding skinnies? What makes a good mountain bike skinny? Were you looking to start a YouTube channel initially? Your most popular YT video (so far) is about building a set of indoor rollers out of logs. What was the reaction to that video? Are you still using the rollers? Which builds are you most proud of? What's next for your builds and your channel? Check out the Backyard Trail Builds YouTube channel, and visit the Backyard Trail Builds website for more. ✏️ A written transcript of this conversation is available to Singletracks Pro supporters: singletracks.com/support --Keep up with the latest in mountain biking at Singletracks.com and on Instagram @singletracks --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/singletracks/support

Slow sustainable fashion meets yoga in this heart opening episode with our dear Lady Farmer friend, Amanda Agricola. A true renaissance woman, Amanda is the creator of Flowy, a sustainable slow fashion brand providing comfortable, naturally dyed garments for yoga and life, using materials that bring a consciousness to how we cover our bodies. As an artist and entrepreneur, Amanda brings a thoughtful and intentional eye to her products, empowering her customers energetically while also supporting mother earth. A disheartened consumer herself, frustrated by the systemic failures of the apparel industry, Amanda created Flowy out of a desire to cultivate a deeper appreciation for the materials that cover our bodies. Not only does she make her products herself, but Amanda invites participation in the making process through natural dye workshops and by distributing seeds for customers to grow their own dye gardens. She also offers a do-it-yourself dye kit to further encourage awareness of this sustainable process. Working with nature through these hands-on, intuitive methods, Amanda integrates her lifestyle and work with her goal to create a little love and comfort in the world. Health and wellbeing are important now more than ever, as we all navigate through the Covid 19 pandemic. In this episode of the Your Forever Home podcast, Frances outlines different ways that we can incorporate wellness into our homes – through connection to the outdoors, bringing the outside in, use of colour and materials on our homes, and more permanently – designing for wellbeing.   Sit back, relax, and delve into all the options to make you feel better in your home.    SHOWNOTES In light of lockdowns that have occurred numerous times to many of us, Frances decided it was time to talk about creating wellness for ourselves, and for the people around us, by creating home havens, where we feel nurtured and cocooned, ultimately creating a positive impact on our mental health.  How can we create wellness in our home?  Private Retreat  Create a space that you and other family members can retreat to. A space where someone can relax, recharge and reconnect with themselves. Ideally, this space has doors to maintain privacy and mitigate noise.   This room could be:  Second living   Sunroom  Conservatory  Retreat or multi-purpose room  Connect to the outdoors  From sitting in a garden, walking along the beach, to surrounding ourselves with plants and trees, connection to outdoors has a positive impact on our mental health and wellness.   Have a vista to a garden or balcony where you have greenery with plants or flowers. Physical connection to balcony, garden or courtyard  A view to the sky, the ocean, a garden or tree canopies.    Surround yourself with the things you love  You need to surround yourself with items that resonate you. Items that you feel connected to so you're surrounded by things that you have meaning and therefore create a sense of being cocooned.  It also creates a more relaxed environment to be in, and also aids in feeling a sense of connection and meaning in your life. Having items in your home that mean something to you - it's what makes a "home" a home.  Create a curated selection of items that mean something to  you, for instance;  Items that you've collected on your travels  Items  that you've made yourself  Something that someone made for you  - a family member, a friend or your children  Heirloom pieces that tell a story and have meaning  Houseplants   Frances' number one way to create wellness and relaxation in a home is to bring plants into the home. Plants are a good option to change the way a space looks and FEELS. Plus, plants release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide.  Some ideas on how to use house plants; Plants in large pots positioned on the floor  Plants are perfect for empty corners and nooks  Placed on  shelves and bookcases – especially trailing plants  Plants in hanging pots from beams or ceilings  Plants in pots placed on bench tops, tables, dining tables, consoles or buffets.  Consider plants being placed at  different heights   Things to consider to design for wellness when renovating or creating a new home   Materials Being Used  Toxic and chemicals   Make sure that you are not using materials that may affect your physical health. If you want to create wellness. minimise the toxicity and chemicals that are being emitted in your home.   Avoid toxic chemicals such as VOCs, those in plastics,  polyurethane and formaldehyde.   Be mindful of hybrid and vinyl floors as they are full of toxic chemicals that slowly emit into the home over time.  Use of Organic and Natural Materials   Choosing natural materials means a reduction of toxic chemical compounds being brought into your home. Plus, bringing natural materials is always a great sustainable choice!  Anything made of timber – sustainably sourced.  Natural Stones  Recycled materials  Organic textures and petrified timbers.  Use of Doors  Doors allow you to create privacy, and mitigate unwanted noise in your home – perfect when you need some time and space for relaxation.  Design around the landscape   Sliding doors or bi-fold doors to create a connection to your garden and the outdoors.  Highlight windows or porthole windows enabling you to get a view of the sky.   Strategic placement of a window that allows you to see your garden.    Colours and Wellness  How do you choose colours that allow you to  feel relaxed, connected, and recharged?  The Colours of Nature  Most commonly, most people love;  Different shades of Blue   Different shades of Green  The Colours that You Love  Choose colours that you love and have always gravitated to   Colours that make you feel relaxed, energized and/or happy  Kids  Allow your kids to have a bit of creative input in their own space, which will make them happy and more connected.   Paint their room colour of their choice (you can provide parameters for this)    Add their favourite colour with the use of scatter cushions, artwork, a rug or throw  Make a  reading nook in a corner of their room to encourage downtime and recharge time.    Free resources around the topic:  Injecting New Life into your Home  Ready to renovate or build but not sure where to start?  Get the help of a property expert and save yourself from making costly mistakes with a free Forever Home chat.

Very informative conversation with Alex Sparrow, author of The Hempcrete Book, about what hempcrete is, and the wider benefits of building with natural materials. Alex Sparrow is founder and MD at UK Hempcrete Ltd., an English company with an international reach, specialising in the design and construction of the structural and thermal envelope of buildings from bio-based, renewable, carbon-sequestering and often recycled materials. As well as construction and specialist material supply, UK Hempcrete offers design, consultancy and training services to assist others in the use of natural materials in construction. Alongside his work at UK Hempcrete, Alex currently holds two board positions in the wider industry: - The Alliance for Sustainable Building Products (ASBP) (London) The ASBP works from a position of independence from government and from short term commercial interests. An organisation which champions construction products that are better for people and the environment, and companies and organisations prepared to push these aims forward, the ASBP seeks to support industry to make better decisions, and legislators to make better policy. Since joining the board in 2017, Alex has been working on the development of the ASBP Awards scheme which showcases construction projects that manifest the phillospohies behind the ASBP's "6 Pillars" model of sustainable construction. - YorSpace CLT (York) YorSpace is a Community-led Housing Developer building high-performance homes designed on passive solar principles and highly insulated, reducing the power they consume. The organisation is committed to using natural & low carbon building materials, helping to pioneer the urgently needed shift towards a full decarbonisation of homes and communities. By embedding fairness and cooperation in all its decision making, Torspace is creating homes that have community inclusion and cohesion embedded in their design. Alex co-authored "The Hempcrete Book; Designing and building with Hemp-lime", (pub 2014, UIT/Green Books); often cited as the definitive guide to this better-than-zero-carbon construction material. This, together with over a decade of practical experience in both hempcrete design and construction and the wider bio-based construction industry, has resulted in an increasing international demand for Alex's consultancy services and appearance at conferences, industry speaking engagements etc. In advancing the cause of natural construction methods in the UK and further afield, Alex is seeking to develop a wide network of like-minded companies in "coopetiton", to assist with the delivery of exciting future projects aimed at speeding up the decarbonisation of the construction industry.

I finally had the chance to do a follow up session with one of my favorite natural builders, April Magill. She's not only an accomplished architect, builder, and educator through her company “Root Down Design” and the American College of the Building Arts, she's also constantly experimenting with new techniques and materials as you'll hear in this episode. Back in the first interview that I recorded with April, we dissected rammed earth and how she was working to revive the craft for all its potential benefits for her climate and conditions in Charleston, NC. This time we talk about hempcrete, and how its anti molding insulative properties are presenting all kinds of new options for natural builders whos' contexts call for insulation to overcome the large temperature swings in different seasons and also need to resist the humidity. We talk about her recent experiments in packing forms in traditional framed homes, the mixture that she's had success with that includes the pozzolan additive metakaolin, as well as where certain materials are sourced from. The second half of the interview we dedicate to the topic of home renovations and how it can often be more environmentally responsible to repair and retrofit an existing home than to build and entirely new one, even if it's made primarily with natural materials. This interview gives a realistic view of some common topics that you listeners have asked me in the past and I'm always excited to talk to professionals who give an honest account of costs, processes, and help to bust myths about natural building and the construction trades in general. In case you're looking for even more information on the myths and realities of building for yourself or hiring a contractor to build a natural structure, you can also check out the article that sums these things up called “The Real Cost of a Natural Building” by clicking on the link in the show notes or in the catalogue of articles in the navigation bar at abundantedge.com. I really feel motivated to give people the most accurate picture of the whole process of building a natural structure for themselves since social media and so many click-bait articles have planted unrealistic expectations around the web.
