Erin Brockovich (2000) (directed by Steven Soderbergh) is based on the true story of Erin Brockovich, a legal assistant without formal training, who uncovers one of the most significant environmental lawsuits in U.S. history: the case against Pacific Gas and Electric for contaminating groundwater in Hinkley, California. The film, which features an Oscar-winning performance by Julia Roberts in the title role, explores the role of lawsuits in exposing truth and gaining compensation for victims, the gendered dynamics of legal advocacy, and the challenges of taking on entrenched power structures in society.Timestamps:0:00 Introduction1:59 Who is Erin Brockovich?3:11 Obstacles to holding corporations accountable5:49 How Erin Brockovich overcomes those obstacles8:10 Imbalance of power and resources14:40 Hinkley, California18:00 Accessing records21:16 Tort reform, punitive damages, and proportionality27:10 States and environmental regulation32:22 Causation and attribution science37:30 Whistleblowers 41:17 Finding the “smoking gun”42:53 The practice of law and parentingFurther reading:Banks, Sedina “The ‘Erin Brockovich Effect': How Media Shapes Toxics Policy,” 26 Environs Env't L. Episode 617 of the Sports Media Podcast with Richard Deitsch features Michael McCann, a legal analyst and senior sports legal reporter at Sportico and a Professor of Law at the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law, where he is Director of the Sports and Entertainment Law Institute. In this podcast McCann discusses how the Vrabel-Russini photographs are problematic, and in ways that pose potential hurdles in workplace investigations; the privacy aspect of the story; if Russini is under any professional obligation to cooperate in The Athletic's investigation; why the NFL is unlikely to set a precedent on the issues of alleged infidelity or anti-fraternization; whether the Patriots are willing to endure daily scrutiny of Vrabel; the U.S. Department of Justice launching an investigation into whether the NFL has engaged in anticompetitive practices; the sports prediction market and why the prediction market feels like legal mess and a public health risk; why Kalshi is winning in court right now; how U.S. states can argue that prediction markets hurt the public; Donald Trump issuing an executive order that directs federal agencies, including the Justice Department and the Department of Education, to determine if colleges have become “unfit for federal grants and contracts” by engaging in “improper financial activities,” and more. It's still on, isn't it? A great game for the neutral, a point gained but oh so close to being more. Archie hosts and is joined by regulars Chris and Mark, and BBC Radio Devon commentator Michael McCann, to bring some extra insight to a fascinating afternoon. Not that you would have been thinking too positively after five minutes. A good attack turned into some horrific defending and a cross or a shot and a flap – 1–0 down. But it didn't feel all doom and gloom, and the Cheltenham Two combined from a well-worked set play: a great finish and a fantastic hobby horse celebration. Reading then exploited what felt like early-season defending to take the lead and it really didn't let up until half-time.Into the second half and a combination of Argyle looking good and Reading sitting back brought a deserved goal for the relentless Caleb Watts. Should Curtis have made a different choice or should we be grateful for his relentless energy and creativity? Let's go with the latter…Part Two brings the uncomfortable subject of club redundancies. Sympathy for those affected is balanced by the evident reality of the ‘perilous' state of the club finances. Thoughts finally turn to two huge games against play-off rivals. And who'd have thought we'd be saying that in December?Up the Bastard Argyle. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Archie hosts this special, mammoth-length edition of the Pilgrims Podcast, joined by Tom, Mark and James as the gang piece together a dreadful afternoon at PL2. A truly miserable home capitulation to Northampton, capped by Tolaj's sending off and a second-half showing that drained what little apathetic, resigned energy remained inside Home Park. There's plenty to chew over: the Fans Forum and what it did manage to clarify, the baffling continued backing of a head coach in Tom Cleverley who appears increasingly out of his depth, and the ever-more troubling details behind the club's “perilous” financial situation. And yet, even through the gloom, there's the faintest glimmer, the signs of life shown in that last-gasp win over Leyton's O-Team, with BBC Radio Devon's Michael McCann providing us his match report and thoughts. A rare bright spot that might just offer something worth clinging to.All that and plenty more as the pod crew recover from their long, painful trek to PL2, therapy microphones firmly switched on.COYG Hosted on Acast. Episode 532 of the Sports Media Podcast features Michael McCann, a legal analyst and senior sports legal reporter for Sportico and the Director of the Sports and Entertainment Law Institute and Associate Dean for Intellectual Life at the University of New Hampshire. In this podcast, McCann discusses how to write about sports legal issues for a layperson audience; why the next five years will be a test of who's a great university president because of paying college athletes, fewer students enrolling (especially foreign students) and birthrates down; the NCAA scoring a win in court as a federal judge dismisses Terrelle Pryor's lawsuit over lost NIL opportunities; the most pressing things that exists right now in the nexus of law and sports; Donald Trump's executive power abilities for college athletics; a judge's ruling that Nevada wide receiver Cortez Braham Jr. can play what will be his seventh college football season; the NFLPA's issues; what he expect to happen with sports gambling scandals; whether a college athlete sign a contract with a sports network, and more. Soderbergh finally hit a box-office home run in 2000 with ERIN BROCKOVICH, a Julia Roberts-starring biopic about a paralegal with a big personality and a nose for corporate environmental malfeasance, and the one-two punch of BROCKOVICH and TRAFFIC in a single year cemented him as a truly major filmmaker. Archie, Alex, and James Stables—aka One Team In Devon and BBC Radio Devon co-commentator on the day—break down another tough week for Argyle, starting with a battling 0-0 draw away at Watford and whether the first half showed genuine encouragement or just flattered to deceive. They discuss key moments, tactical decisions, and whether the subs once again hurt momentum. Attention once again turns towards Michael Baidoo after yet another underwhelming display. The pod grapple with his underwhelming performances, and fail to believe that he's simply not very good, so what are the underlying issues ?Final-third decision-making, or rather the lack of it, takes centre stage as the pod dissects what stopped Argyle from taking all three points. BBC Radio Devon commentator and friend of the pod, Michael McCann, sends in his full-time report, offering a more glass-half-full perspective on events. In part two, the pod looks at the club's messaging during the international break, particularly the latest "Chairman's Chat"—a reflective and insightful letter where the possibility of relegation is openly acknowledged. There's also time for a look ahead to Norwich, with the pod caught between daring to dream and getting bogged down in Opta's 97% chance of relegation. In part three, James and Archie dive into James's latest newsletter, unpacking the butterfly effect of Foster's sacking and the knock-on impact it has had on the club's trajectory.Support the show Hosted on Acast. A game and a result that was always likely to divide opinions – an agricultural slogfest or a retro work of art? BBC Radio Devon commentator Michael McCann shares his post-match thoughts, while friend of the pod Michael Savage gives us a first-hand account of his night in that iconic away end.The Battle of Kenilworth Road and what could be a huge point as the season develops is the focus. Under the cosh from minute one, there is consensus that there is a plan, even if that plan is sometimes not easy on the eye. The injustice of a disallowed goal, whether there's always someone to blame for conceding, and the early signs of a set-piece coach in action are all under the microscope. Even the referee felt like he was from a bygone era in a stadium from another time. From a game that felt like the past to a focus on the future. Can a siege mentality be sustained in the face of a heavy fixture load? Should we be worried about a lack of goal threat or elated about the goals scored? Or isn't it just great to still be in the mix?Quick thoughts on the upcoming fans' forum close things out.Bring on Cardiff.Support the show Hosted on Acast. This led to anger at Herbstreit from Georgia fans because Dylan Raiola flipped to Nebraska from Georgia. Andy talked to Herbstreit on Wednesday night and can provide a lot more context for how that phone call went. Needless to say, there is more to the story. Herbstreit also will have a new co-worker on College GameDay. ESPN announced Wednesday that former Alabama coach Nick Saban will join the GameDay cast this season. Next, Sportico legal analyst and Harvard law professor Michael McCann joins Andy to help explain the various legal cases affecting college sports right now. McCann handicaps next week's hearing in the case involving the Tennessee and Virginia attorneys general suing the NCAA over its NIL rules. McCann also explains what the next steps are after a National Labor Relations Board regional director ruled Dartmouth basketball players to be employees of the university. Then it's time for Dear Andy, where Andy answers your excellent questions. Is the partnership between ESPN and Fox on a streaming service another sign that a super league could happen down the road? If there is such a league, could there be objective criteria for making the College Football Playoff? How large of a domino would Florida State leaving the ACC be?
