There's no telling what's going to happen in the California runoff election for Governor but it is clear Caitlyn Jenner will be the big story as she's going for gold in the golden state. My high school has dropped the name Indians but has picked one that we will prove is more offensive to any honest person with indigenous ancestry. Does Shawnee Mission North not teach history? How out of control is the virtue signaling? A married couple, outdoors, fully vaccinated kisses each other goodbye for the cameras. WITH THEIR MASKS ON! Besides being disgusting, the Vice President is now demonstrating spoiled, pouty behavior you wouldn't tolerate from your toddler. In 2011, the Royals took Bubba Starling with the 5th pick in the draft. They should have taken his Gardner-Edgerton High School teammate in the 45th round. John Means tossed a 27 batter no-hitter for the Orioles that pretty much classifies as a perfect game. And Peloton stock dropped 15% as it recalls all of it's treadmills. Unplug yours, never use it again. Injuries and death are occurring and Peloton didn't want you to know.
When a season ends, rosters take shape. So it’s been for the Royals, whose activity has picked up in the last week with the addition of pitcher Mike Minor and the non-tendering of several players, including third-baseman Maikel Franco and outfielder Bubba Starling. Beat writer Lynn Worthy speculates on who will, and won’t, be returning. Shaun Goodwin performs the same exercise for Sporting Kansas City. The club’s season ended with a heartbreaking loss in the MLS playoffs last week, and decisions on next season’s roster are happening now. That includes the future of captain Matt Besler. Will the longtime defender be back with the club next season? Also, Kansas City added to its menu of professional sports team with the return of women’s soccer. We’ve arrived at the latest opening day in baseball history. And now, the sprint is on. A 60-game regular season and the quest to land in an expanded Major League Baseball playoff bracket begins Friday night for the Kansas City Royals. On this episode of The Star’s daily SportsBeat KC podcast you’ll hear from seven-time Gold Glove-winning outfielder Alex Gordon on what he believes is a more dangerous KC lineup this season. After a break, Royals play-by-play man Ryan Lefebvre explains how it’s all going to work in the booth this season. The Royals’ TV and radio crews will not travel to road games. But they won’t miss a moment of the action. They’ll be calling all the games from Kauffman Stadium. Lefebvre breaks down the unique challenges of such an arrangement. We’ll finish with sound from the first major sporting event in Kansas City since the shutdown in mid-March. You’ll hear how the Super Start Batteries 400 sounded, from the ‘Start your engines!” command bellowed by Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones to the final laps of the hotly contested NASCAR Cup race in KCK. The first busy sports weekend in Kansas City in more than four months has arrived, with the Royals’ season starting, Sporting KC facing Vancouver Sunday at 10 p.m. in the knockout round of the MLS is Back Tournament, continued racing at Kansas Speedway (ARCA, Xfinity and two trucks series races remain this weekend), and the Chiefs’ rookies reporting to camp. The Royals had an active week to open the second half of the season. In the span of just a couple of days, they called up Bubba Starling, traded away Homer Bailey, and swapped Martin Maldonado for former Royals draftee Mike Montgomery. And on top of that, they also won three of their first four games (and won on the night we recorded as well). Brad Keller and Jakob Junis had key early second-half performances and the team is scoring some runs, too.Not a bad way to head towards the trading deadline. The Roast looks at some twitter drama around Andy Richter and his film oeuvre including Cabin Boy, meanwhile Sean finally sees Spinal Tap. Eventually the discussion moves to early May Royals action with highlights on the bullpen leveling out and the rotation in decline despite Duffy's return. Nicky Lopez, Bubba Starling and Paulo Orlando come up as well
We recorded this episode on a pretty darn good day for Royals baseball, just after they swept a double header against Tampa Bay. That performance really helped out the numbers of the starting rotation, which had been faltering more than the bullpen for a change. Much of this season has seen the Royals bullpen blow leads or be more gas on the fire than fireman, but the script was flipped up until Jakob Junis and Glenn Sparkman dominated the Rays. But that's the micro level. On a bigger scale, the Royals are walking and hitting for power, a shift from the organization's usual offensive profile. After a month, they're in the middle of the pack in walks and homers (when usually they're at the bottom of the list). Hunter Dozier is leading the charge, but others are chipping in, and it definitely seems like most of the lineup has a good plan at the plate so far. We discussed walks, some minor leaguers, Adalberto Mondesi continuing being awesome, Bubba Starling, Kelvin Gutierrez debuting, and a lot more.Follow us!Twitter: http://twitter.com/KCBaseballVaulthttp://twitter.com/TheJeffReporthttp://twitter.com/michaelengelEmail us!KansasCityBaseballVault@gmail.comAnd remember to rate and subscribe on iTunes or any other podcast app you like.

We also looked at the first cuts in camp and what's next for some key players, including Hunter Dozier's first base adventure, and Bubba Starling's injured oblique.Follow the Vault at @KCBaseballVault. As spring training games started up, the Royals started making a little bit of news. And Jeff returned to help host (after his first few weeks adjusting to parenthood). The Royals signed Salvador Perez to a contract extension, so we talked about the money, the risks, and what it means for the organization. One side effect of following a winning baseball team we've discovered is that the "wait until ___ when the prospects arrive" (ah, 2011, we missed you, sort of) isn't really a thing anymore, so Jeff and Mike have lost track of the fine details of the Royals' farm system.Thankfully, there are experts out in the world who can help us catch up. Jim Callis of MLBPipeline.com was kind enough to lend his insight to us and we talked about the Royals depth in the minors, the star power in the system, and how some of the familiar names like Bubba Starling might turn out.He also shared his thoughts about some of the risers in the system and who the surprises of 2016 might be. We've owed you a show about prospects for a while, and this one will help you get caught up along with us. You can follow Jim on Twitter at @jimcallisMLB.Follow the Vault at @KCBaseballVault. While the All-Star Game was starting up, we got to talking about the second half and our frustrations with the way the Royals finished the first half. Most of our time was spent answering some listener questions about the podcast, the Royals, and baseball in general. That led us down the path of talking about the Royals player evaluation approach and the blindspots they run into when looking at players, including Irving Falu, David Lough, Johnny Giavotella and others. We also talked about some roster moves and the Royals use of their minor leagues to keep the bullpen fresh. And we also talked about the promotions of Kyle Zimmer and Lane Adams to Double A. That led us to talk a bit about Bubba Starling as well (who, along with Adams and Jason Adam formed a group called "The Tripod" in spring training before last year).
This week on the Kansas City Baseball Vault, we discussed the young season and the Royals early success in 2013 and shared the elements that stood out to us in the first place start. Then we cycled in some great guests, starting with Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Kendrick's spirits were high following a successful Red Carpet premiere of "42", which saw a packed AMC Theater show the Jackie Robinson biopic. The event featured an collectibles auction and many Royals made appearances, as did the stars of the film, Chadwick Bozeman and Harrison Ford. We spoke about the movie, the event, and the lasting impact of sharing a story like Robinson's through film. We could talk to Bob for hours to hear all the stories, but we had to move on. We then talked with Brad Cook from OOTP Developments about the newest edition of Out of the Park Baseball and the new features of the highly-addicting baseball simulation game. We finished up by talking with Jason Parks of Baseball Prospectus. He wrote an article detailing concerns about Bubba Starling and we brought him on to ask him a bit more. He had an interesting take on some of the circumstances that may hold Starling back and while it's not uplifting, it's also important information to think about in evaluating the local prospect.
After a long winter, baseball is finally back, and after a week off, we're back talking about the Royals. We gave our first impressions about the first four games of the season and discussed any performances we're worried about yet (stressing that it's only four games so far). We talked about the reactions on social media, both positive and negative, and everyone agreed that there was a lot of overreaction to the Royals first two losses of the year. There's a lot more baseball to go, and it's satisfying to project how things will go, and even more so to be right about it, but there's a point where it cuts into the enjoyment of the game. Then we brought on Aaron Stilley (@Royal_Heritage) who talked about an upcoming talk he's giving at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum about Jackie Robinson and the Kansas City Monarchs. The event is April 13 at 10:30 am. Aaron can also be found at his blog: http://kcbbh.blogspot.com. We finished off with a wraparound of the Royals minor league affiliates, with some games in progress. Add this after the first sentence of the last paragraph: In the process, we talked about Bubba Starling and how likely it is that he'll pan out or if he'll start looking at other avenues if he struggles this year or down the line. That will be a regular feature of the show from here on.
The Royals are gathering in Surprise, Arizona right now for spring training and taking stock of their talent as the 2013 season starts. Who better to discuss that talent than one of the men who's helped acquire it? Royals Assistant GM JJ Picollo talked with the Vault about a number of prospects and their expected paths to the big leagues, including John Lamb, Kyle Zimmer, Jason Adam and Yordano Ventura. He explained the organization's approach to advancing Bubba Starling and talked about the input he gave Dayton Moore prior to the Wil Myers/James Shields trade. He also gave us an idea of how things shift from a scouting and development standpoint and adjusting to the circumstances and skills of each player. Prior to talking with Picollo, Troy, Jeff and Mike talked about some of the early news out of spring training including Jeff Francoeur's reaction to criticism, the middle infield and utility player battles, and what to take away from Tuesday's intrasquad game.
On tonight's episode of the Kansas City Baseball Vault, the boys were faced with the harsh reality that the dog days of summer brings to the City - losing Royals Baseball. We were also joined by 65 year Professional Baseball veteran and former Kansas City Athletic, 81 year old Bill Fischer who also serves as the Senior Pitching Advisor to the Royals. Bill joined us from Burlington where he was scouting the likes of Bubba Starling. To close the show, Chris challenged the rest of the crew to point to one shining light for the rest of the season. And then for some reason a Karen Carpenter song played. This and much more is in this week's edition of The Kansas City Baseball Vault heard every Thursday at 6pm on ESPN 1510 am and on demand at RoyalmanReport.com
With Fox 4 taping us in studio, we celebrated the official start of Royals spring training with a Pitcher and Catchers edition of the Royalman Report. Joining us first was Jay Brinkley of Three Guys in a Garage who discussed such matters as the Royals expectations and starting rotation, the Border War and going from a chilly garage to 810 in Kansas City. We also talked with Jason Adam about what he's working on in spring training and his goals for 2012. We also discussed his friendship with other Royals farmhands including Lane Adams, Matt Ridings and Bubba Starling. Jason's a funny guy and we're always glad to have him on when he has the chance. We wrapped up by catching up on the latest news and looking at what lies ahead for the Royals.
Rany and Joe break down this week's draft, discuss whether the Mariners made a mistake with the #2 pick, and debate whether Bubba Starling should have been the top selection.
