This week, I sit down with Carrie Nardini to talk about one the city's biggest and most important events that is the I Made It! Market! Carrie established ‘I Made It Market' in 2007 after a very small group of other crafters (including Carrie) were looking for more opportunity to showcase and sell their homemade wares. With only a few markets happening back in the late 2000's, Carrie realized that there were none that were specifically curated to highlight all the makers in Pittsburgh. Now, almost 15 years later, Carrie spearheads the all the events for I Made It! Market and The Neighborhood Flea and we learn all about it! - I cannot implore yinz enough to head out to the I Made It! Market on December 9th! This is a FREE event! If you're looking for a place to get your Holiday shopping done, THIS IS IT! You'll have a plethora of local vendors selling fantastic homemade goods to purchase for your friends and loved ones, just in time for the holiday. Keep in mind, when yinz #ShopLocal, you're keeping the money into the community and investing in the future of incredible events like these. Vertex AI Experiments with Ivan Nardini and Karthik Ramachandran Hosts Anu Srivastava and Nikita Namjoshi are joined by guests Ivan Nardini and Karthik Ramachandran in a conversation about Vertex AI Experiments this week on the podcast. Vertex AI Experiments allows for easy, thorough ML experimentation and analysis of ML strategies. Our guests start the show with a brief introduction to Vertex AI and go on to help us understand where Experiments fits in. Because building ML models takes trial and error as we figure out what architecture and data management will work best, Experiments is a handy tool that helps developers try different variations. With extensive tracking capabilities and analysis tools, developers can see what is working, what's not, and get ideas for other things to try. Ivan tells us about the two concepts to keep in mind before using Experiments: runs, which are training configurations, and experiments, adjustments you make as you look for the best solution. Vertex ML Metadata, a managed ML metadata tool, helps analyze Experiment runs in a graph, Ivan tells us. He takes us through an example ML model build and training using Vertex AI Experiments and other tools. He and Karthik also elaborate on the relationship between Vertex AI Experiments and Pipelines. We talk about the future of AI, including the foundational model, and some cool examples of what's happening in the real world with Vertex AI Experiments. Max Saltonstall and new host Anu Srivastava are in the studio today talking about Vertex Explainable AI with guests Irina Sigler and Ivan Nardini. Vertex Explainable AI was born from a need for developers to better understand how their models determine classifications. Trusting the operation of models for business decision making and easier debugging are two reasons this classification understanding is so important. Explainable models help developers understand and describe how their trained models are making decisions. Google's managed service, Vertex Explainable AI, offers Feature Attribution and Example Based Explanations to provide better understanding of model decision making. Irina describes these two services and how each works to foster better decision-making based on AI models. One or both services can be used in every stage of model building and to create a more precise model with better results. Example Based Explanations, Irina tells us, also makes it easier to explain the model to those who may not have strong technical backgrounds. Ivan runs us through a sample build of a model taking advantage of the Vertex Explainable AI tools. Presets provide easier setup and use as well. We talk more about the benefits of being able to easily explain your models. When decision-makers understand the importance of your AI tool, it's more likely to be cleared for production, for example. When you understand why your model is making certain choices, you can trust the model's outcomes as part of your decision-making process. Irina Sigler Irina Sigler is a Product Manager on the Vertex Explainable AI team. Before joining Google, Irina worked at McKinsey and did her Ph.D. in Explainable AI. She graduated from the Freie Universität Berlin and HEC Paris. Ivan Nardini Ivan Nardini is a customer engineer specialized in ML and passionate about Developer Advocacy and MLE. He is currently collaborating and enabling Data Science developers and practitioners to define and implement MLOps on Vertex AI. This week on Late and Legends the boys (including Josh) test out their sea legs. It's not easy pretending you understand nautical terminology, and the team learns that first hand as they fake their way onto the Big Gun Barge. And like a fish out of water, the boys flounder around as they try to figure things out. Only the Big Gun Barge (and Josh) has a few surprises in store for them. In this episode of The End of Sport, Derek and Johanna are joined by USA Today's For The Win editor and columnist Hemal Jhaveri and Natalie Weiner, weekly columnist of Good Form on Fanbyte, to discuss everything that went down over the past week in Women's hockey. More specifically, the episode provides a deep dive into what happened with the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL), Barst**l Sports CEO Erica Nardini and the mass of online trolls, and the critique launched at Nardini and others from Metropolitan Riveters defender Saroya Tinker. After describing what happened last week, the four talk about Natalie's piece in Fanbyte and Hemal's analysis in For The Win, and highlight how it reflects a broader issues of systemic racism, patriarchy, privilege and power, and how people at Barst**l perfectly encapsulate the form of what Nancy Leong calls “identity capitalists” – powerful insiders who eke out social and economic value from Black, Indigenous, and people of color, women, LGBTQI+ folks, the poor, and other marginalized groups. Following our discussion of the hypocrisy and paradoxical logic put forth by representatives of Barst**l in their protection of their CEO (by targeting players in the NWHL and, more specifically, athletes like Saroya Tinker), the four chat about how the events of the past week are reflective of much broader systemic issues that move beyond the NWHL and hockey culture in general. Finally, Johanna probes the rest to think about how we might apply Natalie's critique of the “girlboss” mentality to another realm of exclusion in sport – the transphobic rhetoric we are seeing emerge in sports like Swimming targeting Biden's Executive Order on Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation (for some MUCH NEEDED background and analysis on this see Britni De La Cretaz brilliant piece for Refinery29).   Hemal's piece in For the Win: “The NWHL has a Barstool problem, and it can no longer look away” Natalie's piece for Fanbyte:  “The Double-Edged Sword of ‘Women's Empowerment.” You can follow Hemal and Natalie on Twitter!     For a transcription of this episode, please click here. (Updated semi-regularly Credit @punkademic) Research Assistance for The End of Sport provided by Abigail Bomba. __________________________________________________________________________ If you are interested you can support the show via our Patreon.
