This episode of PGAP falls on World Population Day and is also PGAP's first year anniversary! Instead of celebrating with balloons and confetti – because they're bad for the environment – we mark the occasion instead by interviewing two very special guests. Dr. John Coulter, former leader of The Democrats and long term member of Sustainable Population Australia, looks back on an ad he posted on The Australia in 1971 calling for limits to growth – exactly 50 years ago. Host Michael Bayliss also talks with filmmaker Dubhaltagh O Hearcain of Nature's Way Films, to discuss a brand new documentary on overpopulation ‘The Way To Live.' Both interviewees call for a movement ‘beyond population' towards a bigger picture of equity and living within the physical limits of the natural world. A gargantuan episode for gargantuan times. Meet John Coulter. Truly an elder for the post-growth movement who spent a good chunk of his past nine decades on earth as an activist for conservation, the environment and limits to growth. As a keen scientist, diver and environmental activist, he formed ZPG (Zero Population Growth) in the 1970s. John took his politics to parliament, where he was elected as a federal senator for The Democrats in the 80s and was briefly the leader of the party in the 90s. John has since been involved with Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) has tirelessly undertaken many roles within the national executive committee to this day. I caught up with John at his home in the Adelaide hills. It is an amazing heritage property with acres of preserved native bushland. Unfortunately, a bushfire came through the property a couple of month before we recorded the episode, leaving much of the land scarred. It was a sobering experience to walk through the property and a stark reminder that change is happening as society's growth experiment hits the decade of consequence. John also showed me an advertisement he had printed in the Australian in 1971 which was titled: “To those who shape Australia's destiny.” It goes on to say: “We believe that western technological society has ignored two basic facts: (1) The resources of planet earth are finite; (2) the capacity of the environment to renew resources that are used up and to repair the damage causes by the exploitation of those resources is limited and decreasing.” Signed by hundreds of esteemed scientists, John goes to share what has changed since the ad was published 50 years ago and what has stayed 'business as usual' due to the vested interests of big business, mainstream politicians and mainstream media. Meet Dubhaltagh O Hearcain of ‘Nature's Way.' From the USA, he has launched a new documentary on overpopulation, ‘The Way To Live.' This documentary joins a (ha ha) growing parthenon of inspiring documentaries over the last few years which dare to focus on the limits to growth. ‘The Way To Live' goes deeper to look to the cause roots of modern human psychology that result in us living beyond the planet's physical means. With interviews with Dave Gardner, Karen Shragg and David Paxton from World Population Balance - as well as the inspiring FIGU community in Switzerland - Dubhaltagh shares the inner workings towards making this thought provoking film. I would like to take this opportunity to give my hats off to Sustainable Population Australia, who make this podcast possible and who have courage to support a project which goes beyond population to explore the wider world of post-growth. These have included discussions with interviewees who may not see eye to eye with SPA on the issue of overpopulation. After an entire year of their support, it was high time to focus an episode toward the amazing minds and talent that emanate from this amazing organisation. Population has recently come into the spotlights in the Australian media with the release of the federal government's Intergenerational Report 2021. The IGR bemoaned that the closure of the borders since COVID are going to lead to an Ageing demographic nightmare. SPA wrote a media release in opposition to the claims by the IGR and the good news is that the media responded, with offers for interviews, references in opinion columns and published letters to the editor. SPA is also looking forward to supporting a conference on Sustainable Agriculture later in September. We're crossing both hands behind our collective back to ward off another round of lockdown and PGAP will provide updates in the leadup to this impressive conference. Speaking of down under, it is also NAIDOC week (https://www.indigenous.gov.au/news-and-media/event/naidoc-week-2021)and PGAP would like to pay respect to elders past, present an emerging on lands that were never ceded. PGAP recognises that First Nation contribution to a new post-growth world is critical, and we are proud to include two perspectives from two amazing Indigenous women here (https://pgap.fireside.fm/martuwarra) and here (https://pgap.fireside.fm/tasperspect1). What was that you say? 1 hour and 10 minutes of PGAP is just barely enough and you want to read up on more of the stuff raised in this episode? Well, glad you asked. What's the UN saying about World Population Day 2021 anyway? Found out more here (https://www.un.org/en/observances/world-population-day) This is a fascinating biography (https://biography.senate.gov.au/coulter-john-richard/) on John Coulter's political legacy. You can find out everything you need to know about the documentary ‘The Way to Live' and ‘Nature's Way' website here. (https://natureswayfilms.com/) The Intergenerational Report 2021 can be found here. (https://treasury.gov.au/publication/2021-intergenerational-report) More importantly, SPA's media release can be found here, (https://population.org.au/media-releases/igr2021/) and a summary of the community response to the media release here. (https://population.org.au/spa_response_igr2021/) Have I helped to make SPA sound like a good thing to you? It's true! Like all good movements, they can only benefit from your support to a good cause. Find out more about supporting SPA here. full show notes @ https://thesternmethod.com/lise-alschuler Lise Alschuler is a naturopathic doctor with board certification in naturopathic oncology. She is the co-author of a book I highly recommend called The Definitive Guide to Cancer. She co-created iTHRIVE, a cancer survivorship programme and co-hosts a radio show, Five To Thrive Live! on the Cancer Support Network. In 2008, Dr. Lise was diagnosed with breast cancer. She integrated natural supplements, diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes throughout her treatment and is 10 years cancer free! She now incorporates the learnings of her own, firsthand experience into her work to help others facing the challenges of this disease. ***Resources Mentioned*** Dr Lise’s Website Dr Lise’s Book - The Definitive Guide to Cancer Five to Thrive Live – radio show / podcast iTHRIVE: Free survivorship programme ListenAndCare.com Cortisol Manager Suntheanine Nature's Way lavender product *** In This Episode: The topic of this podcast is one that’s particularly close to home for Teddy and I. When Teddy was pregnant with Ryder, she experienced immense amounts of stress from a negative work environment. We often wonder about the impact this stress had on our son and if it was responsible, at least in part, for his cancer. So it’s a topic I was really excited to explore, and there’s no one better to do this with than Dr. Lise Alschuler. In this episode Dr. Lise explains the potential negative effects that stress can have on the body, including cancer progression and relapse, and what we can do to mitigate stress and anxiety in our lives. What led you to becoming a naturopathic doctor specializing in cancer? Took an undergrad class at medical school. Many people diagnosed with cancer shared their journey Each person was unique, authentic, honest, courageous Wanted to treat these kinds of people, so decided to get into oncology Passion was in integrative medicine. Pulled out of medical school to study naturopathic medicine Offered position at cancer hospital and discovered integrative oncology Fascinated with the transformative element that a cancer diagnosis invokes in people Dr. Lise’s father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Lived past his prognosis using integrative oncology Two years later Dr. Lise was diagnosed with breast cancer and experienced integrative oncology firsthand She felt healthy throughout conventional treatment despite side effects Can you talk to the importance of mindset and effective stress mitigation strategies? We often try to create linear relationship between cause and effect Cancer is multifactorial – can't appoint blame to any one thing Take control of what we can. Modify our relationship to stress Latest research shows correlation between high levels of stress and cancer progression or recurrence, rather than initial diagnosis Cancer rates increase amongst individuals who have experienced significant stressors in their lives e.g. death of loved one or marriage break up Cancer cells have been growing for 10-20 years before they get large enough to be identified as a tumor. Stress can accelerate what's already present Stress is just one factor behind tumor acceleration All changeable through stress modification What are you finding on the relationship between stress and prognosis? Studies look at impact of the biomarkers of stress on cancer patient outcomes Study on advanced breast cancer patients Divided study participants by their circadian rhythms – healthy circadian patterns indicative of a healthy stress response Study showed women with flat circadian rhythms had chronic stress and died sooner – highly statistically significant. Had less immune function Cortisol suppresses our natural killer cells and other essential bodily functions Similar results seen on studies of people with colon and lung cancer The importance of social networks Feeling socially isolated has a negative effect on prognosis Not the quantity but the quality of connections with others How do we know if it’s mental or external stressors behind the disruption of circadian rhythm as opposed to environmental influences e.g exposure to too much blue light? Inflammatory cytokines are elevated throughout the body when there is a constant stress response When stress mitigation strategies are implemented a positive change seen in circadian rhythms and inflammatory cytokines reduced “Psychological wellbeing is like a firehose on inflammatory cytokines” Note for parents of young children Clear link between early childhood stress and adult susceptibility to cancer An elevated stress response system becomes hardwired Start stress modification techniques early e.g. meditation through guided imagery, creative play, good rest How do you counsel people to get their mental well being under control? Step back and look at the bigger picture – where is identifiable stress coming from? What you change to bring more of yourself into the world in a positive way? Other factors: Sleep – enough, quality, hygiene, light exposure in the morning Melatonin controls circadian rhythms and sleep. Often deficient in people with chronic disease Aren’t there negative effects of supplementing something your body produces naturally? Melatonin has a very short halflife. We don’t habituate to it Melatonin has anti-cancer properties and is a potent antioxidant. Restores health of the pineal gland, reenabling melatonin production In theory the body could develop resistance to melatonin. Long term users should take breaks and adjust dosage Long-term use of any supplementation poses risks in terms of resistance With kids, be conservative with anything in the hormone category Back to stress mitigation strategies Avoid sleep medication if you have cancer. Try a natural first Regular, daily, vigorous exercise at the edge of your fitness Exercise creates healthier circadian rhythms, fewer inflammatory cytokines, healthier immune systems, blood sugar control What would say to someone going through conventional treatment where the last thing they feel like doing is exercise? Still need to exercise but drop the intensity General rule of thumb: recovery time after exercise should be no more than half the exercise time when on treatment. If longer to recover then over doing it If lost muscle mass tai chi, yoga, walking are better options Rebounding What’s next after exercise? Diet. Correlation between Mediterranean or anti inflammatory diet and lower stress hormones and inflammatory cytokines Plant-led diet with no process foods – more resilience to stress Refined sugar is a stressor Majority of diet should be plant-based Too much meat is carcinogenic Plants and herbal medicine Two for one – manage stress and anti-cancer potential Diverse gut microbiome – prebiotics, high fibre fermets Lower anxiety and better stress response, immune function and response to conventional treatment Adaptogens – plants that can reinstate circadian rhythm e.g. American Ginseng Ashwagandha, Holy Basil Brands Dr Lise recommends: Gaia Herbs, Vital Nutrients (Verified Quality is their consumer brand), Pure Encapsulations, Integrative Therapeutics (product called Cortisol Manager) and Solaray To reduce anxiety, Dr Lise recommends L-theanine (in particular, products containing Suntheanine) and lavender extract. Silexan is a lavender oil formula that is used in supplements. Dr Lise recommends a Nature's Way product. Mindfulness and meditation Mindfulness starts with breathing. Exercises like the 4, 7, 8 breath Great meditation apps. 10 minute guided meditations Tai chi, yoga or qigong – moving meditation Explore different types of meditation Headspace and Calm apps are mindful meditation There are other types e.g transcendental meditation and loving-kindness meditation Follow Dr Lise https://www.drlise.net/ If you have a question or comment about this episode let us know below!!

Robin Singh is a LAZY MASTERMIND. In this episode we see how his laziness was the key to his success as an online entrepreneur. He started out as a "hacker and a freaker" in India. Eventually ended up in the US because of a misspelling in an e-mail.(another story for another time) Because of his computer skill xp, began selling software - a program that would extract files (photos, sounds, etc) from flash. He promised a 6 hour delivery but hated due dates. He hated waking up or getting interrupted in his daily life. He was sick of it. So he found a way to auto deliver software purchases Thus E-Junkie was born. Initially E-Junkie only supported PayPal, but eventually Google Checkout approached them, so they decided to become a shopping cart platform. He didn't chase Google down. He waited, procrastinated, and they came to him. Later, while relaxing by himself out in nature, in leisure, he had an epiphany where he realized what his greater purpose was - to eliminate consumption as much as possible and create a place that minimizes human and animal labor and suffering. That's when Peepal Farm came about. Some key points he makes about the Lazy Mindset: • He wanted to make money by doing nothing • Didn't want to "sell his hours for money" • $0 marketing budget. Relied on Word of Mouth Marketing. "Get people to do the marketing for you" • Focus on GENUINE one on one connections outside your circle of friends and family to create "weak links" • Find something you're interested in and someone doing well at it, then reach out. • Don' be afraid of not hearing back from people • Don't be a task monkey. • Hone in on what you want (not material). Look where you want to go • You can either purchase lazy freedom or purchase a "thing" that you must work to pay off. • Saving money is easier than working for it. • When you're working, you're not building something. You're building it for something else. • Cut out anything that's unnecessary. Don't follow consumption patterns • Advertisements are designed to seduce you • Things and money are just symbols of success and not actual success • The best luxury money can buy you is freedom • "The best ideas come from leisure time. You're not gonna [be] coming up with great ideas while you'r e slaving away in front of a machine from 9-5. You're gonna have a great idea when you're just chilling somewhere, like hanging out in nature." • If you're going for financial freedom, you have to decide what you're going to do with that freedom • "I am absolutely lazy. I just want to sit" • Even if you don't consume anything materialistic, you still need to eat. Even if you're vegan (like Robin) and eat just a bowl rice, someone somewhere down the line is putting in labor and suffering. • "My life comes at a cost to others" • "I have all this time (excess time) and I'm going to use it to help others" • Lower consumption not to lower materialism but to lower suffering • Laziness is not "I don't want to work." It's somewhat of a fear. Do what you want • Work is a feeling, like home is a feeling more than a place • Embrace procrastination. It's just nature's way of telling you what's important. Morning Mindfulness - Two Positive Minutes to Start Your Day
It was said, The Nature doesn’t hurry, but it has everything done on time. Everything in Nature is done when it needs to be done, and we don’t really question it. But we do question our own activities...
Most people treat aphrodisiacs as folk fantasy. Don’t be deceived. When libido flags in women, there are many herbs that can help revive it. The biochemistry of plants like ginseng, dong quai, fennel, shilajit—even a few essential oils can bring powerful sexual regeneration to your body and intensify your libido. It’s your own individual response to specific herbs that holds the key to which aphrodisiacs are best for you. Loss of your libido can have many different causes. So when turning to herbs for help in the sexual arena, you will need to experiment a bit to find which plants work best for you. But watch out. It can not only be easy to create an experience of intense desire; it can be just as easy for a woman to end up fertilized by the results of it. Shatavari—Asparagus racemosus This Ayurvedic female rejuvenation tonic is also an excellent aphrodisiac as well. It’s been used for thousands of years as a female tonic to correct menstrual and menopausal imbalances as well. Traditionally known as “She who has 1,000 husbands”, it was long believed to give a woman the strength and passion to handle 1,000 lovers. Organic shatavari root extract contains a full spectrum of active and synergistic constituents, including saponins containing shatavarin. Use only this herb which is naturally grown or ethically wild crafted so it contains no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Wild Yam—Dioscorea villosa Often restores a woman’s libido so successfully that I wouldn’t advise you to use it unless you have a sexual partner. You can take it as a tincture—½ to1 teaspoon in water twice a day—or as a dried herb in capsules, 4-6 capsules a day. I have known women who take as many as 10 capsules a day, but less than this works very well for most. American Ginseng—Panax ginseng Is as good a raiser of libido in women as it is in men, despite the assumption that it is a male plant. It is particularly useful for post-menopausal women. Drink it as a tea three or four times a day. Be patient it takes time to do its work. Shilajit—known by many names in many countries Has been used as an aphrodisiac and female fertility treatment for centuries. One of the most powerful “herbal” substances known, it has been used for thousands of years all over the world. It comes in a thick, tar-like form containing over 80 minerals from Himalayan rocks. It is anti-inflammatory, anti-stress and anti-anxiety, as well as anti-aging. Be sure to buy only the highest grade of Shilajit, wild crafted and gathered from the Himalayas, since only the finest will bring you your desired goal. Fennel—Foeniculum vulgare Is replete with plant steroids. In animal experiments it has been shown to raise the libido of both males and females. You can take it as a tea. Bruise a teaspoon of organic fennel seeds and pour 2 cups of boiling water over them. Steep for 5 minutes, strain and drink. Caution: Do not use fennel oil on your body when you are pregnant, as it has been known to cause miscarriage. Other simple herbs which you can add to your foods with a good reputation for enhancing libido are parsley, fenugreek—great to sprout and eat in salads—ginger, and anis. Even coca, from which chocolate is made, is a mild aphrodisiac. You can also use certain essential oils to enhance libido on the night. Massage your body and your partner’s with a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil or apricot oil to which you have added one of the aphrodisiac essences: Clary sage, ylang ylang, rose, or jasmine. Of course, this is for external use only. It’s powerful stuff—you need only 1 drop of an essential oil to each teaspoon of carrier oil. A capsule of vitamin E squeezed into the oil when you mix it helps keep it fresh longer. Next week on our Sacred Truth Podcast, we’ll be looking at some of the best aphrodisiacs for men, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, check out the links below for the best products you can find. As a fifth-generation herbalist, Dean grew up on herbs and has diverse experience in organic horticulture, the natural foods industry and healthcare. Taught by his father to grow lady slipper orchids and other herbs, Dean went on to farm 165 acres of organic herbs in the 80’s. While attending Brigham Young University in pre-professional nutrition, he worked for a nationally distributed dietary supplement manufacturer. After college, he served as dean of admissions, author, editor and teacher for John R. Christopher’s School of Natural Healing. In 1997, Dean was invited to help form a multi-disciplinary alternative medicine team and was granted full practicing privileges as an herbalist at the Columbia hospital Miami Heart Institute in Miami Beach, Florida. From there, he was recruited by Nature's Way to be their senior educator, formulator, director of new products, and director of technical services. In 2009, Dean resumed fulltime directorship of Nebo Health, a consultancy for the dietary supplement industry. As an independent consultant, he enjoys sharing the benefits of the many products he helped launch in the eleven years he worked for Nature's Way. Dean most enjoys the herbwalk presentations he feels fortunate to provide throughout the world.
