On episode 30, I discuss my small goal of running 3 miles a day before marathon training starts in three weeks, and talk about these podcasts: Ten Junk Miles The Negative Splits Podcast Florida Men on Florida Man
Have you ever gone out HARD in a race then crashed & started slowing down? It's super painful right? Not only physically but it's hard on the ego! Starting a race FAST then slowing down is called “positive splits”. We often find that the opposite approach of starting slower and finishing faster allows for athletes to push harder at the end of the race & gain confidence resulting in faster times! This type of approach to starting SLOWER and finishing FASTER is called NEGATIVE SPLITS
Didn't run much the last two weeks, but I did get a few runs in and talked about the runs and these podcasts: Ten Junk Miles Keep it Weird The Negative Splits Florida Men on Florida Man

What stands out about Coach Greg McMillan's philosophy is how it truly caters to the individual. And for someone who coaches thousands of runners, both elite and recreational, he clearly has a process that's working. What we think you'll love most about this episode is the idea of being flexible with your training. Not doing exactly what's written down on your training plan is probably the hardest thing for runners, but it's this small change - the ability to adapt your training based on how you feel each day - that can help you experience the biggest gains in performance."That's what the thinking training is about. I need to have strategies to deal with this lizard brain. If it starts to get fired up, I've got to have something pull me back into what I know is my optimal mindset.”Timestamped Show Notes(2:36) What defines success? Iain Nelson currently resides in Syracuse, New York. When he's not running or training for his next ultra you could find him on a golf course, reading, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. In the early 2000's, Iain started running a few miles to stay in shape while living in Houston, TX. It wasn't until after 2008, after he moved to Detroit, MI that Iain began participating in races as a purely social endeavor and to spend time with friends. In the podcast, Iain shares his story of taking a giant leap from half marathons as a way to socialize to a different type of competitive race, ultra marathons. We talk with Iain about life lessons that help him in both running and life, as well as running back-to-back ultras as he prepares for his first 100-miler. He also shares helpful advice and quotes from Steve Prefontaine, Admiral William McRaven, and John Wooden. This episode is hosted by Matt Sorenson and is sponsored by goodr.
