A very sleepy Matt and a very inspired PushingUpRoses welcome an incredible guest onto the show to talk about one of the weirder games we've ever played. Musician, video producer and hella talented dude Neil Cicierega is on the show to talk about playing adventure games as 90's kid -- your dad bringing home shareware adventure games to install on your Windows 3.1 PC and the entire family puzzling over it over weeks, months, and years -- and how to pass that experience on to your kids.We also do a surprisingly DEEP dive into a bizarre 1993 game Cliff Bleszinski designed in Visual Basic when he was 17, called Dare to Dream. It goes... places. https://www.youtube.com/c/patrickhwillems (Patrick Willems) spent six years on YouTube trying to attract an audience for his short films, before he pivoted to video essays about everything from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elXLAcl363A (baseball movies) to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBqRAaZulAY (Francis Ford Coppola's filmography) to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6SbUIDnzJw (Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again.) Those essays got wildly popular and today, he has more than 350,000 subscribers. However, he kept making shorts, embedded in his essays as narrative framing devices. In other words, he says, he "trick[ed] the audience into watching short films that I also wanna make, but that normally would not get the views on YouTube or have sponsors on them." Then, starting in early 2020, he began connecting those narrative shorts into a serialized story about an evil talking coconut named Charl. This so-called "Charl saga" culminated in June with the release of a feature-length film, https://nebula.app/videos/patrickhwillems-night-of-the-coconut (Night of the Coconut), which is available on the streaming platform Nebula. A dream is just a wish your heart makes. In which we discuss episodes 9, 10, 11 and 12 of LOST. We talk about how Danielle Rousseau is scary and beautiful and how Jean-Jacques Rousseau is neither of those things; rationality and the enlightenment; dreams, psychics, horror and surrealism; Jonathan talks about the history of Iraq in the 20th century; Erin describes an incredibly weird, slightly disturbing Eraserhead inspired dream she once had. This episode both opens and closes with nerdy discussion, so fair warning for that, but it's episode, what did you expect? We're gonna acknowledge it. Damn. Other than that, the boys have been up to quite a lot the past few weeks, and you'll definitely be told about it. Some new pop culture was taken in as well! Hear Darrens Thoughts (TM) on the new Sufjan Stevens, Fleet Foxes and Neil Cicierega albums respectively! Also Marshal watched The Social Dilemma so now he's more woke than ever before! Also discussed are a couple POP CULTURE MURDERS and a large snack disaster. NOTE: if you notice a weird edit before the break, just know you'll find out why in due time. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/talkingbutourversion/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/talkingbutourversion/support

This week begins with your hosts sharing stories of drive-thru experiences. Matt gives Tyler some insider knowledge. Next up is a discussion of the new Neil Cicierega album, Mouth Dreams. This includes a digression about Vine, an argument about pre-announcing media, and a conversation about comedy. This is a tangent-filled episode. After some complaining about podcasts, Matt talks about his headaches and how he tries to deal with them. Tyler is relieved that he’s not alone, and he’s pretty sure neither of them have a brain tumor.
