“I cannot do an interview without talking about who I come from as it pertains to the writers who have influenced my work because their fingerprints are all over [it].” - Elizabeth AcevedoIn an interview, we may hear Elizabeth Acevedo's singular voice, but she assures us she is not alone. Elizabeth reminds us that she is part of a lineage and an amalgamation of many voices. She, like all of us, represents those who came before her, those whose books she devours, those who have shaped her life, and those who inspire her. A Greek chorus, if you will. In fact, when I asked Elizabeth about her personal journey, she called on her community and family at every phase—the community that raised her and continues to nurture her. Elizabeth credits everyone, from the neighborhood boys who encouraged her to spit bars at the local corner store to the teacher-mentors, with being essential to her rise as a critically acclaimed author and international slam poet star.Elizabeth Acevedo is a beloved poet and author, celebrated for winning prestigious honors like the National Book Award, the Prinz Medal, and the Pura Belpré Award. She also held the title of Young People's Poet Laureate. And on a personal note, she is one of my all-time favorite authors. Elizabeth is renowned for her young adult novels, including "The Poet X," "Clap When You Land," and "With The Fire on High," along with her recent adult novel, "Family Lore." Her writing vividly explores her Afro-Latina heritage, delving into themes of identity, family, and the relentless pursuit of dreams. In this episode, we discuss Elizabeth's secret mentors (and mentees), and some of the spurns she has encountered within the literary community. She reminisces about Friday nights in her apartment building, reflects on the importance of names, and ruminates about what her future may hold. She even shares her original rap name!***True to her poetry roots, in her reading challenge, "Novels Through Poems" Elizabeth has compiled a list of books that are just that tell stories through poetry.
The first time I heard Tomi Simmons perform I CRIED. This slam poet and yoga teacher is one of the best in the game. Her writing skills + performance delivery is literally some of the best I've ever seen and she inspires me SO much. If you are ever lucky enough to see her perform LIVE then you will totally see what I mean! In this episode: Tomi and I sit down 1:1 for the very first time and talk about our relationship to poetry + the performance aspect of it She shares all about how she started and fell in love with it at a very young age, plus how it's helped her process trauma and communicate some really difficult things with her family that she may not have been able to otherwise. AND she was sweet enough to bless our ears with two of her beautiful poetry pieces and her inspiration behind them After hearing her share her love for this art, its almost as if poetry won my heart all over again. I am always so amazed at hearing just how much its helped others not only cope with difficulties of life, but also meet and connect with community and close friends. Tomi is now starting her very own poetry slam in the OC area and creating a space for more poets to come together and share their art. You can follow and keep up with upcoming events via instagram at: @ocpoetryslam And connect with Tomi directly via: Her website: https://www.tomisimmonspoetry.com/ Her instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tomisimmonspoetry/ You can purchase her merchandise and also book her for upcoming poetry events, open mics etc!
Mit: Andreas Matti (Wolfisberg), Samuel Streiff (Georg Singer), Joël von Mutzenbecher (Johannes Pfütz), Ágota Dimén (Marisa), Joachim Rittmeyer (Bippo), Carolin Schär (Emelie), Liliane Amuat (Polizistin), Nicola Mastroberardino (Polizist), Julian Thorner (Moderator 1), Mia Hofmann (Moderatorin), Andreas Müller-Crepon (Moderator 2), Ranja Kamal (Nachrichtensprecherin), Geri Dillier (Redaktor), Rebecca Dütschler, Felix Münger u. a.

His monumental work, A People's History of the United States, published in 1980, continues to have an impact today. For Zinn's' centennial we explore what made his model of history different with three guests who were influenced by his bottom-up approach: Anthony Arnove worked with Zinn throughout the latter part of his life, and wrote the introduction for the 35th-anniversary edition of Zinn's classic work; Jamaican poet, performer and writer Staceyann Chin performed in The People Speak, a documentary film based on A People's History; and Imani Perry, professor of African American Studies at Princeton University who just won the National Book Award for Nonfiction for her own bottom-up history: South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation. What lessons can we take from Howard Zinn's model of history for this time?“. . . [Howard Zinn] was extremely clear on the importance of anti-racist education, so he would be absolutely in solidarity with people associated with critical race theory . . . who are just trying to do basic education about the history of racism . . .” - Anthony Arnove“This book is only beginning to uncover what really happened throughout history . . . a hundred years from now, new truths will come forward and be recorded in new ways. New enlightenments will come to us, and new truths will land on us in different ways.” - Staceyann Chin“Even as there are devastating events and all of this injustice, you actually can feel hopeful. That's incredibly important . . . that you give people a sense of possibility and a desire to invest in freedom.” - Imani PerryGuests:• Anthony Arnove: Editor, Voices of a People's History of the United States; Director, The People Speak; Editor, Director & Producer, Voices• Staceyann Chin: Poet, Performer, & Activist, The People Speak• Imani Perry: National Book Award Nonfiction, South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation; Professor, African American Studies, Princeton University

The boys get together to discuss the very recent news of the Russia/ Ukraine situation. How it is not a black and white issue, meaning that race isn't exactly the issue in this particular conflict, however, racism is bad. The boys share the totally not cringe poetry about the conflict from AnnaLynne McCord. It was a great poem and was definitely not a long nonsensical poem. This leads the boys to discuss the writing process of comedy/ poetry and how they will invite a female artists over to write. The boys get into spirituality and take a short dive into Chris and Col's zodiac charts. The boys reinforce that this podcast is also a mental health podcast. J.K. Rowling: Harry Potter en de geheime kamer 2. Derek Otte: Toflof 3. Amina Belôrf: Zonder het licht te breken
Our guest for the sixth episode of the Creative Flow: Thinkers and Change Agents Podcast Series is Brandon Williamson. He is a Creativity Consultant, an Admissions Counselor at Fredonia State University of New York as well as the founder and creator of the internationally recognized Pure Ink Poetry Slam. Brandon shares his love of all things creative and how applying the intellectual side of the topics that he studies helped him achieve successes with multi-cultural groups on the SUNY Fredonia campus, minorities in the Department of Justice and in diversity workshops. In this most entertaining episode, Brandon discusses how he uses a tool called Forced Connections in his poetry to help change perspectives so a poem can touch and move his audience. One of the insights he often shares in his workshops is “Creativity is the catalyst for change. Creativity is not the icing on the cake, it is the cake.” Listen to the end for a performance of one of his favorite poems called Buffalo Wings that ties into his feelings about his home, the City of Buffalo, NY.
