Are you Team Edward or Team Jacob or some secret third option?**Marcelle asks this question only at the very end of the episode, and you know why? Because there is so much more to discuss when it comes to Stephanie Meyer's Twilight. And who better to dig into this novel's plot and place in pop culture than Jackson Bird (he/him) who, over fifteen years ago, was a Twi-hard. If you frequent fan spaces, you might know Jackson through his previous work with Harry Potter Alliance or his very popular Youtube channel. Or perhaps you know him from guest spots on the podcast Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, his own (now retired) podcast Transmission, his 2017 Ted Talk (How to Talk and Listen to Transgender People), or his book, Sorted: Growing Up, Coming Out, and Finding My Place. Or maybe he's a new person to you, in which case, you're welcome — he rocks! In this conversation, Marcelle, Hannah and Jack discuss what was going on in 2005 that primed Twilight for such wide success. They ask: Why were young readers so hungry for a character like Bella? What does the plot of the novel suggest about the reading appetite of millennial readers coming of age in an era defined by impossible beauty standards and purity politics? As a former volunteer and later employee of Fandom Forward (what was then called The Harry Potter Alliance) and a transgender man, Jackson Bird's feelings about Harry Potter have certainly evolved, especially given the extremely divisive statements JK Rowling has made about the transgender community. He shares how what was once an important part of his identity has faded away and why, as well as how he feels about his memoir four years later and what he's working on now. Here are some of the references from this episode for those who want to dig a little deeper:Jackson BirdSorted: Growing Up, Coming Out, and Finding My Place (A Transgender Memoir) (Simon & Schuster)Jackson Bird - YouTubeCool Stuff Ride Home podcastFirst Draft Theater newsletterThe Infinite Wrench — The New York Neo-FuturistsHenry's writing about the Harry Potter Alliance:"Cultural acupuncture": Fan activism and the Harry Potter AllianceWizard RockFandom Forward > (formerly The Harry Potter Alliance)Jackson Bird: ‘Harry Potter' Helped Me Come Out as Trans, But J.K. This week, we offer the second of an ongoing series of episodes focused on fandom and fandom studies. Last week, we explored fandom’s relationship with the creative industries. This week, we are looking at fan-based activism. The episode features Janae Phillips, Director of Leadership and Education for the Harry Potter Alliance, who oversees the Granger Leadership Academy and the Fandom Forward study guides project, among other things. Shawn Taylor is one of the founders of Nerds of Color and a founding organizer of the Black Comix Arts Festival, a festival that highlights and promotes artists on the margins of the mainstream comic book industry. Shawn recently published a white paper, We The Fans: How Our Powers Can Change the World, as a Senior Fellow for the Pop Culture Collaborative. We begin our discussion by trying to understand what we mean by fan activism and why fandom has emerged as an important driver of movements for social change. We consider why fandom might not only enable young people to enter the political process but also how fan activism becomes more sustainable because of the elements of joy, empathy, and passion it brings with it. We consider the darker sides of fan activism, including links between “toxic fandom” and the alt-right, but we also consider how fandom has become a site for anti-racism work. We share our experiences at the Granger Leadership Program this summer as an example of how the Harry Potter Alliance is helping to train young activists and the Granger/Lovegood campaign as a specific effort with the goal of registering and informing potential young voters. Finally, Shawn closes us out with some reflections on Afro-futurism as a philosophy and model for social action and the risks that it has become too cool, too fast. This episode is dedicated to the memory of Karan Nevatia – a remarkable young producer, fan, activist, and professional. Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper: Here are some articles Henry has written about the Harry Potter Alliance’s model for social change and its Not in Harry’s Name Campaign. Henry’s research group had more to say about the Harry Potter Alliance in their book, By Any Media Necessary: The New Youth Activism. In 2016, I put out an episode about how JK Rowling’s themes in the Harry Potter series inspired a generation of progressive activists including Jackson Bird, who was the spokesperson for the Harry Potter Alliance. Jackson is also trans. Recently, JK Rowling has alienated many of her fans and supporters with her views on transgender rights. I catch up with Jackson Bird to discuss how he’s handling the cognitive dissonance of being inspired by the messages in the Harry Potter books while feeling profound disappointment in JK Rowling. I'd say that anyone who's paid attention to the news in the last few years, has been on social media—or has just conversed with other human beings—has probably gotten the sense now and then that the world seems on edge. Still, many of us parents can get so inspired by our own kids that we get the sense that they're going to change the world—or at least their own corner of it. And a lot of kids might feel like they want to do exactly that. But how to start? How to take the desire to do good and turn it into something real, something that can truly help people? That's the aim of my guest in this episode and the amazing organization she manages. I got to geek out a bit in this conversation because Katie Bowers is the managing director of the Harry Potter Alliance. No, it's not some sort of group where people talk about how awesome Harry Potter is. No, the HPA takes the passion that fans of Harry Potter and other books and movies have, and helps them turn that passion into action. As Katie says in our conversation: “When people truly become passionate about a book or a character, it's because they see themselves in that hero.” And the HPA has turned fans' passion into amazing results. With hundreds of thousands of members spanning 35 countries and six continents, the HPA has helped kids and adults create meaningful change around the world. They're pretty freaking awesome if you ask me! In our conversation, we talk about: The work of the HPA and how they “turn fans into heroes” Why Harry Potter and other fictional characters inspire fans to make social change How to decide what to do if you know you want to do something, but don't know what or how The power of “unironic enthusiasm”—the best way to foster your child's eagerness to help How to help your kids develop leadership qualities needed to bring about change Why it's okay to be Neville Longbottom instead of Harry or Hermione Specific projects for preschoolers vs. elementary school aged kids vs. high schoolers Tips for when your child's project fails The importance of building a good team around you How to help kids handle the risks of the spotlight when they stand up for what they believe Why kids might have a better opportunity to build bridges with those with opposing viewpoints than adults How to teach kids to handle tough conversations with friends and loved ones with opposing views And the value of “time, patience, love, and a willingness to keep at it.” Guys, I got fired up by this conversation—it's a great launchpad for you and your kids to make the world a better place. On the Schmooze Podcast: Leadership | Strategic Networking | Relationship Building
Today’s guest says the pendulum has swung too far in the direction of superficial online communications. He spotted the real-time marketing revolution in its infancy and wrote five books about it including “The New Rules of Marketing and PR,” with over 400,000 copies sold in English and also available in 29 languages from Albanian to Vietnamese. In 2002, his entrepreneurial journey began when his ideas were a little too radical for his bosses so he started writing books, speaking at events, and advising emerging companies. He recognizes how tech-weary and bot-wary people are hungry for true human connection. He developed a winning strategy, called a Fanocracy, helping organizations tap into the mindset that relationships with customers are more important than the products they sell to them. Please join me in welcoming David Meerman Scott. Would you leave an honest rating and review on Apple Podcast? Or Stitcher? They are extremely helpful and I read each and every one of them. Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast My guest today is Andrew Slack. He joins me to share his thoughts and personal experience on how to use storytelling to create social change. A climate activist and former head of the non-profit Harry Potter Alliance—which used the collective fandom of J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World to create a movement of good-will in the real-world—we talk about his approach of using the arts to catalyze movements through the stories we share, as fans of fiction, from our culture, or our individual lives. He also asks some questions of me about why permaculture matters, in a conversation that wound up personal for both of us. You can find out more about Andrew's current project at savesantashome.us. I've also included links in the resource section of this episode to The Harry Potter Alliance and other places you can find more about him and his work in the wider world. Visit Our Partner: VerdEnergia Pacifica When I started this podcast in 2010, I wanted to deepen my understanding of permaculture and share what I learned during my permaculture design course. As time went on my interview skills improved and more and more people joined me as guests, including authors whose books you have on your shelves to others recording their first-ever media appearance. As that happened, so the show became about people sharing their stories. For those who were media savvy, to get them to stray from their talking points and tell us a personal tale about who they are, where they come from, and why what they do matters. For those who were new, to draw out their passion and hear more about what they care about. Together we could find threads in common to connect to and inspire. That regardless of our backgrounds we could understand one another as people, and make the world smaller, more intimate, and peaceful. Meeting with Andrew and sitting down with him in his apartment in Washington, D.C. I wanted to understand how people take their stories, their art, and the connections they see to create something bigger than individual actions. Something more than ourselves that is engaging, fun, and world-changing because as permaculture practitioners, we know how to solve problems. How to grow food. How to feed people. How to care for the other-than-human. How to restore ecosystems. How to repair damage to our communities. What I find missing is how we share the vision of what this bountiful future based on ethical design looks like. How do we use story, modern myths, the arts, to create broader social change? How do those of use skilled beyond the landscape apply our talents to create lasting and permanent culture atop the regenerative surplus of permanent agriculture? I know many of you are artists and storytellers yourselves. You write. You draw. You make comic books. You paint. What kind of collective can we form and work together so that people yearn for the dream of a lush, verdant, bountiful world? I'd love to hear from you. Leave a comment below. Since the election of Donald Trump as President many have been wondering what they can do to make their voice heard, get involved to fight what may be coming, and fight against the hate that's been unleashed. Many in entertainment and fandom have been voicing their displeasure with the election and are working to add not just their voices but also their talent to the mix. Joining this politically focused episode of Graphic Policy Radio is Andrew Slack, co-founder of the Harry Potter Alliance, and Rafael Shimunov, the Creative Director at Working Families Party. Dan has been in England for a week and now it’s time to come back to America and Election 2016--but first, he has a nice, quiet plane ride with no access to the news. Surely that will go well. Like Dan’s plane, this election is coming in for a landing. How will this last week go? We asked CNN’s Brian Stelter to talk us through this final week and to discuss the role the media has played in this entire, never-ending (but maybe actually almost ending?) election. Come on, everyone. We’re landing this election on the Hudson. Hang on tight. SPECIAL NOTE: next week, at 8pm EST, we’ll be going LIVE on election night. MuggleNet Academia is a comprehensive insight into the literary thematic elements and scholastic endeavors that author J.K. Rowling has provided in her writings of the Harry Potter and Cormoran Strike series. We look through the entire Harry Potter series for various elements in alchemy, literary components, composition attributes, as well as available classes at Universities and Colleges around the world, and various unique studies that are being implemented today. We also dissect the Cormoran Strike mystery detective series as the books are being released, helping readers understand and appreciate the writings of the modern-day Dickens, J.K. Rowling. Once again, the MuggleNet Academia team of host Keith Hawk, managing editor for MuggleNet, and co-host John Granger, the Hogwarts Professor, brings our fans the latest in academic discussions within the Hogwarts saga. Science in Harry Potter? You’re kidding, right? Harry’s adventures are set in a magical world that is the antithesis of the Muggle realm’s dependence on science and engineering; magic by definition is the suspension of the laws of nature, and, as science is the exploration of those laws, the worlds should not meet, even in the potions laboratory of Professor Snape. Except in one field, namely, genetics. Witches and wizards, pure-blood, half-bloods, mudbloods, and even squibs are all subject to and products of the vagaries of chromosomes and genetic coding like all the rest of us and as this is no small part of the larger meaning of the Hogwarts Saga – the prejudice of purebloods to muggleborns – getting the genetics right is an important thing. Joining us today to talk about this is Dr. Eric Spana, an Assistant Professor in the Practice of Biology at Duke, who is an expert on the subject and Priyanka Nadar, founder of the Harry Potter Alliance chapter at Mary Baldwin University who has her Masters in Engineering Sciences from Dartmouth. We hope you enjoy the show. Thank you for listening.

Achieving these aims as a practice manager demands a clear vision, sound preparation, planning and marshalling of resources, broad business knowledge, an understanding of a rapidly changing world, and above all wise judgement. So why Genghis Khan? Although some in the West see him in negative terms, the Mongol leader created one of the world's greatest empires. Hold on to your broomsticks! This week we spoke with Katie L, the founder of Asheville's chapter of the Harry Potter Alliance. The Harry Potter Alliance is: "changing the world by making activism accessible through the power of story. Since 2005, [the HPA] engaged millions of fans through our work for equality, human rights, and literacy." What does this mean exactly? We delve into the world of fan activism and learn about what types of charity efforts the Harry Potter Alliance works on, including Apparating Libraries and Accio Books. Next we learn that the popular wizarding sport Quidditch is now available to muggles globally. To top it all off, listen to Benny and Katie test their wits at a round of "Who Said It - The Pope or Voldemort?" Want to learn more about the Asheville Harry Potter Alliance? We also chat about #HungerGames24 and the production notes that Lionsgate recently uploaded to their publicity page (a massive document that includes, among other things, a list of cast members in order of appearance and a full list of the songs that will be appearing IN the film). Courtney from Welcome to District 12 shares her experience at the L.A. Mall Tour stop and we finish sharing the fantastic Crackpot Theories submitted by listeners Grace and Rachel. We are also joined by an incredibly special guest: Andrew Slack, the creator, co-founder, and executive director of the Harry Potter Alliance. He fills us in on the HPA's latest endeavor (which both Adam and Savanna have helped develop): a Hunger Games-related campaign called Hunger is Not a Game.
