Opening for any major international touring band is a daunting task, but when you face the prospect of opening for two heavyweights of the metal scene in Sylosis and Angelmaker, that task becomes almost impossible. But don't mention that to rising Australian metalcore outfit Lune, who will be doing just that when the Australian tour kicks off in Perth on February 11. Not that they won't agree with you, it's more that the band already know and are more than ready for the challenge.HEAVY caught up with founding members and brothers Nathaniel (vocals) and Krys Smith (guitar) to find out more."I'm particularly nervous," Krys began, "because Sylosis are one of those bands that I found when I was formative with my guitar playing. I remember watching a video with Josh (Middleton) teaching how to sweep, and I was just learning to play guitar at the time. So it's pretty hectic for me to be playing shows with that guy. I'm super keen. Just in the process of putting a set together and making sure the nuts and bolts are nice and tight. Very, very excited."In the full interview, the band spoke more about the honour of playing with bands they grew up listening to and the challenges of putting on the best show possible. They elaborated on their touring strategy, focusing on musical perfection and creating a positive environment for all involved, highlighting the importance of tailoring their set list to resonate with audiences while maintaining high energy during performances. We went deeper into a Lune live performance and what to expect, the reception for previous album The Change Around Us And The Change In You, new music and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Summoning the most brutal elements of Floridian death metal and combining it with the coldest permafrost of Scandinavian black metal, emerging Canadian deathcore outfit Angelmaker are making huge waves on the international metal scene.By confronting listeners with furious, focused, and violent extremity, Angelmaker create deathcore of the highest order - injected with blackened thrash, a smattering of power violence, and the urgent ferocity of underground hardcore. They are a band who let their music do all the talking, raw, confronting and in your face. With new vocalist Ian Bearer strengthening the band, Angelmaker are poised for the debut Australian tour earlier next year, supporting Sylosis for a run of shows in February. To find out what all the fuss is about, HEAVY sat down with Bearer and Angelmaker's other vocalist Casey Tyson-Pearce to find out more.We start by asking why the band have neglected us here in Australia for so long."We've been trying," Casey laughed. "(but) Nothing has really aligned for us. We just did our first European tour a year and a half ago, so we've been working our way into more international markets. For us, we're Canadian so it makes a lot more sense for us to just tour in North America, but now we've got a good foothold to actually make our way over there. We got this opportunity, and it was like, there's no way we're saying no. We need to see koalas. We need to see kangaroos."In the full interview, Angelmaker discussed their upcoming tour in Australia, starting in Perth on February 11 and ending in Brisbane on February 16. They expressed excitement about the tour and their anticipation of experiencing Australian culture. The band also mentioned their new song, Relinquish, and their plans to play a mix of old and new songs during the tour.We discussed the band's unique sound and their approach to songwriting, explaining that the band members write their own parts, which are then integrated together to create a cohesive sound. They also discussed the addition of a new vocalist, Ian, who has brought a powerful presence to the band and the dynamics at play with dual vocalists and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Atlanta-based metal band Alluvial, formed in 2017, channels a haunting blend of rapid-fire polyrhythms, sludgy atmospheres, and tight grooves. Comprising Kevin Muller (vocals), Wes Hauch (guitar, vocals), Tim Walker (bass), and Zach Dean (drums), the band recently unleashed their 2024 EP, "Death Is But a Door," aiming for an even more sinister sound than their previous album, "Sarcoma."Guitarist Wes Hauch, a recent guest on the Vulgar Display of Podcast, shares the band's creative ethos, expressing a perpetual pursuit of darkness in their evolving sound and imagery in their videos. The EP represents their commitment to intensifying their message and vibe, drawing parallels to iconic shifts in heaviness seen in legendary albums like Slayer's "South of Heaven" and "Reign In Blood."Having transitioned from their instrumental debut, "The Deep Longing for Annihilation," Alluvial introduced vocalist Kevin Muller in "Sarcoma," resulting in a remarkable synergy within the band. "Death Is But a Door'' showcases the evolution of their cohesion as a unit, delving into bleaker and heavier territories while maintaining a delicate balance.Rooted in death metal, Alluvial's sonic exploration extends beyond genre confines. From the thrash influences of Pantera and Metallica to the darker grunge tones of Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, the band remains committed to keeping their audience on their toes with a diverse musical palette.Wes Hauch emphasizes the band's intent to create meaningful yet intense songs that elicit both terror and heartbreak. Despite the brutality inherent in their music, Alluvial navigates twists into clean passages and atmospheric ambience, inviting listeners to discover new dimensions within their compositions. With the collective background of its members deeply entrenched in the death metal scene, including experiences with bands like The Faceless and Suffocation, Alluvial's music promises a brutal journey. Hauch envisions their records as immersive experiences, a place where listeners can find solace with a unique tint to their perception. In their pursuit of musical exploration, Alluvial transcends gritty brutality, showcasing technical prowess alongside atmospheric depth. Wes Hauch affirms that the upcoming EP, more furious than their previous work, retains the unmistakable essence of Alluvial. As they continue to craft a distinctive sonic experience, the band invites listeners to delve into a world where influences meld into an unparalleled soundscape.Alluvial is gearing up for a nationwide U.S. tour, slated to kick off in January as the tour support for Veil Of Maya. This extensive tour will see them sharing the stage with fellow bands AngelMaker, Reflections, Left To Suffer, and Until I Wake.www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

Nick Harkaway, "Titanium Noir" (Knopf, 2023)

According to Merriam-Webster, noir is “crime fiction featuring hard-boiled, cynical characters and bleak, sleazy settings.” The Cambridge Dictionary says noir shows “the world as being unpleasant, strange, or cruel.” Nick Harkaway new novel Titanium Noir (Knopf, 2023) has all that but with a twist—rather than the fedora-wearing detective hired by a woman who just as soon stab you in the back and love you, the first-person narrator is P.I. Cal Sounder, hired by the police to help investigate the murder of a 7'8”, 91-year-old man who by all rights could have lived several more centuries. Sounder's specialty is investigating crimes against Titans, the one percenters among one percenters, whose access to an exclusive medical treatment known as Titanium 7 enlarges both their bodies and their lifespans. The story is set hundreds of years in the future, when such miracle treatments become possible, but the book also sends roots into the past. The murder weapon, for instance, is a .22 Derringer, a small handgun not too different from the weapon used to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. “Killing someone with a gun is noir. Every poster of a noir movie is someone with a gun, whether it's a shadow with a revolver or a kind of Rico Bandello in Little Caesar. The gun is bound up with noir and vice versa,” Harkaway says. It is characterized by its heavy and aggressive sound, incorporating brutal breakdowns, guttural vocals, fast-paced guitar riffs, and complex drumming patterns. Deathcore bands often explore dark and intense lyrical themes, including violence, death, nihilism, and existentialism. The origins of deathcore can be traced back to bands such as Despised Icon, Job for a Cowboy, and The Acacia Strain, who helped shape the genre's sound and style. These bands incorporated the technicality and brutality of death metal with the breakdowns and melodic hooks of metalcore, creating a unique and distinctive sound.Deathcore quickly gained popularity among metal fans, particularly among those who enjoyed the extreme and aggressive nature of the genre. The heavy and relentless nature of deathcore music, combined with its intense live performances, attracted a dedicated and passionate following. One of the key elements of deathcore is the breakdown, a section of the song characterized by slow and heavy guitar riffs accompanied by powerful drumming. Breakdowns are often used to create a sense of heaviness and intensity, encouraging moshing and headbanging among fans during live performances. The breakdowns in deathcore songs are known for their bone-crushing impact, creating an exhilarating and cathartic experience for both the band and the audience.Lyrically, deathcore explores a range of dark and disturbing themes. Bands often delve into topics such as violence, horror, despair, and the human condition. The lyrics can be introspective and thought-provoking, examining the darker aspects of life and society. Some bands also incorporate elements of horror and the occult, further adding to the genre's macabre and sinister atmosphere. In conclusion, deathcore is a powerful and aggressive subgenre of extreme metal that combines the brutality of death metal with the melodic hooks and breakdowns of metalcore. Bio: If time is a flat circle, then 2 things are true: 1) Deathcore's return was inevitable. 2) Andrew Baena, Johnny Ciardullo, Cooper Lagace and Travis Regnier were destined to form another band. The quartet killed off predecessor Galactic Pegasus' djenty metalcore as their writing trended deadlier. So intense was Carcosa's devotion to death that the body was still warm when they started. Their June 2020 unveiling and release of the 'Absent' EP 2 months later took them from disregard of to mastery over death. Carcosa stares into the abyss—knowing everything happens in cycles but with nihilistic knowledge, everything ends. Their name, as well as the black, yellow and spiral-laden imagery, were inspired by 'True Detective.' One could argue their lyrics and sound came from the hopeless mind of Rust Cohle. The music borders on apocalyptic but accepts the bleak end as the twin of the hopeful beginning. It's the kind of doom-and-gloom through which The Acacia Strain and Chelsea Grin channeled their brutality, tempered with the futuristic noises of contemporaries like Brand of Sacrifice. The lyrics on debut LP 'Anthology' don't follow the tragic journey of their debut, but the collection renews its endless loop construction. The new release drops on the year anniversary of its predecessor (8/19) and the final track seamlessly segues to the opening of both. Though done intentionally for 'Absent,' on 'Anthology' it happened without conscious thought; time is a flat circle, indeed. What Carcosa is drinking: Andrew (guitar) and Johnny (vocals) are the only two people in the band that drink beer consistently but Johnny can say with full confidence that both of their favorite beers are 1664's Kronenbourg Blanc Make sure to give Carcosa some love via any of the following: Website | LISTEN | Facebook | Instagram Jam Hypnos and other gnarly tracks from previous Featured Bands on our Bands to Watch For playlist Beers fueling this week's episode include Agua Straight from the Tap in Todd's Apartment (Todd's pick) and Starbucks Vietnam Da Lat reserve Blend (Arie's pick.) Or at least it was during the recording of E31 of Brewtal, regardless, it's always Shark Week in our blackened hearts. This episode has Todd recovering from his first float trip, and some brewtal fire ant encounters, while Arie teared up during The Ghost Inside livestream. As much as Todd wanted to remember his fire ant encounters he decided to go with a Fire Eagle for his beer(works) selection, while Arie stumbled upon a Wild Little Thing, no it wasn't a shark, in his fridge for his beer selection. Opening up the metal floodgates we found that the legendary Iron Maiden dropped their amazing new track, 'Writing on the Wall,' the almighty Phil Bozeman has teasing us with some BTS content for their upcoming 8th album, our boys in Haine got on a few dates with Shadow of Intent, Angelmaker, and The Last Ten Seconds of Life, not to mention more killer new jams from Crytsal Lake, A Night In Texas, and Slaughter to Prevail! We float down from the shark infested waters into Hell of the Human variety for our featured band this week. Your life was one deprived, but will be fulfilled by the end of the episode. Turn it up to 11, crack open that beer, it's about to get BREWTAL! Featured Band: This week's episode features Life Deprived from Human Hell. Bio: Human Hell. Absolute finality. Void in rest. terra firma. Firmly in terror. Unanswered, we continue life deprived. We're following up from our most recent single Amalantrah with a much heavier sound. Life deprived is released on all streaming platforms from July 16th What Human Hell is drinking: Our favourite beer is pretty much anything from the Camden Town brewery, mostly notably Camden Hells and Camden Pale. We also are very fond of Mikeller - Hair in the Mailbox. Make sure to give Human Hell some love via any of the following: Merch | Apple Music | Spotify | YouTube Music | YouTube | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | TikTok Jam Life Deprived and other gnarly tracks from previous Featured Bands on our Bands to Watch For playlist Beers fueling this week's episode include Austin Beerworks' Fire Eagle (Todd's pick) and Sierra Nevada's Wild Little Thing (Arie's pick.) Fire Eagle is an American IPA that, "flavor swoops in (cue EAGLE SCREAM), grabs you by the face and flies you through the hop rainbow. At the peak of the ride it swoops back to earth and gently drops you back on your bar stool where you are refreshed, excited and ready to ride again." Easily, one of the best descpritions from a brewery out there, Austin Beerworks! This American IPA will have you screeching for sure after having a few of these bad boys coming in at 7.3% ABV. Austin Beerworks is located in Austin, Texas. Wild Little Thing is a slightly sour ale that is light-bodied and refreshing! With notes of guava, hibiscous, and strawberry Wild Little Thing is very easy drinking with a 5.5.% ABV to boot. Very dangerous! Sierra Nevada is located in Chico, California and Mills River, North Carolina. That's right! Ian and James talk your scene news from:The Ghost Inside, Ozzy, Breaking Benjamin, Marilyn Manson, A Day To Remember, Warped Tour, Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein, The Word Alive, Blessthefall, Wage War, and a serious conversation (on a comedy show) about sexual misconduct/assault accusations in the scene. This is not a conversation about who is “right” and who is “wrong”. This conversation does not choose sides and does not expect you to either. It is an analytical conversation, all speculation, all opinion, on the current state of accusations that happen to take place in the scene. If you like an open conversation with no judgements that may actually be thought provoking, then this conversation is for you. If not, you can skip it and go on to New Songs. The entertainment show, known as Ian Hates Music, is normally a comedy show, but the co-hosts try to be open and honest and sometimes that means covering the big stories that involve a sensitive nature. And New Songs talk from:Born A New, Low Dose, AngelMaker, Whitechapel, Dayshell, Harm, Life Itself, The Damned Things, Our Last Night, New Idea Society, Belle, The Anchor, and Charlatan!Add on album reviews from:Attila - Villain - Self-ReleaseExitWounds - Visions - EP - SharpTone RecordsBlood Youth - Starve - Rude RecordsBoundaries - My Body In Bloom - EP - Unbeaten RecordsTo the Rats and Wolves - Cheap Love - Arising Empire/Nuclear Blast RecordsMinors - Abject Bodies - Holy Roar/Deathwish RecordsDeadships - D.O.A. - Stay Sick RecordingsGhost Iris - Apple of Discord - SPV/Long Branch RecordsPlus, stuff and/or things and maybe some more! Also, Ian has opened a Patreon to help with the costs of the many Ian Hates shows. Twenty-eight episodes, just like there are days in February! This time, Nick and Alastair both read actual books - specifically Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway and Maus by Art Spiegelman - and one probably had a cheerier time than the other. But at least both enjoyed The Lego Batman Movie (5:25), an exercise in joyous Batglee like no other. Good to be back on the comic adaptations for 2017. In other franchise-sequel news, it's time for T2 Trainspotting (20:41) (and for Nick to watch the original movie). Can these Scottish heroin addicts anchor a franchise with as much panache as Batman? Sticking with superheroes and tripping out, next it's time to try X-Men-adjacent TV show Legion (36:09). Finally, Alastair recommended Nick the Danish surreal-horror show The Kingdom (48:08). Did he like it? Will he include clips of its amazing theme tune in the show? (Yes.)

This special edition of Book Talk features three interviews recorded on location at Edinburgh International Book Festival last month. Kate Summerscale, author of the phenomenally successful The Suspicions of Mr Whicher discusses the results of her success and her new book, another fascinating piece of historical non-fiction, Mrs Robinson's Disgrace. Angelmaker author Nick Harkaway talks about how being the son of John Le Carre meant being raised in 'a house full of stories', as well as going into detail about his own fiction writing. Lastly, debut novelist Natasha Soobramanien explains her fascination with islands and describes how years of life experience shaped her novel Genie and Paul.
