He is a pitcher for the Mississippi Braves, the Double A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, with whom he signed as a free agent in 2021 after having pitched in the MLB Draft League. He then proceeded to post a 2.76 earned run average over 16 ⅓ innings in rookie ball. He had played collegiately in Lakeland, Florida, and in high school as well. Fans of Major League Baseball absolutely will recognize his last name, with his having had three different family members who all played in the big leagues.

The Knuckleball… a pitch that is turbulent, unpredictable, and rarely mastered. One player who did was Phil Niekro. With 318 career victories he currently sits 16th on the All-time Winners list, the highest of any knuckleball pitcher. Of course the knuckelball is a fickle mistress. Niekro may have had three 20-win seasons, but he also had two 20-loss seasons as well; and to top it all off he is the sole MLB pitcher to pick up 20 wins and 20 losses in a single season, throwing 21-20 for the Atlanta Braves in 1979. With 24 seasons under his belt, there's a lot games to choose from. For today's classic, we're heading back to 1967, as the Braves visit the Houston Astros.Phil Niekro is on the mound, facing a pitching duel with the Astro's Don Wilson Behind the microphone are Gene Elston, Loel Passe, and Harry Kalas to take you through the game. 7/9/1967 - Braves vs Mets - Shea Stadium in New York -In the 1967 season, both the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves showcased considerable performance. The Cubs, though talented, had a challenging season, ending 5th in the NL with a 87-74 record. Their inconsistency hindered a promising start, and they missed the postseason. Players like Ernie Banks and Ron Santo contributed solid performances, but the team's overall lack of depth was apparent.Contrastingly, the Braves had a more successful year, finishing 7th in the NL with a 77-85 record. Hank Aaron and Phil Niekro were instrumental, with Aaron hitting .307 with 39 home runs and Niekro posting an ERA of 1.87. However, despite these individual achievements, the Braves couldn't secure a postseason berth, as they struggled with inconsistent pitching and defense..Atlanta Braves starting lineup1 - 1B - Felipe Alou2 - CF - Mack Jones3 - RF - Hank Aaron4 - LF - Rico Carty5 - C - Joe Torre6 - 3B - Clete Boyer7 - SS - Denis Menke8 - 2B - Woody Woodward9 - P - Ken Johnson.New York Mets starting lineup1 - SS - Bud Harrelson2 - CF - Larry Stahl3 - LF - Tommy Davis4 - 1B - Ed Kranepool5 - RF - Ron Swoboda6 - 3B - Ed Charles7 - 2B - Bob Johnson8 - C - Jerry Grote9 - P - Jack Fisher

This is the second of our two-part conversation with Claire Smith, who broke down barriers for women and journalists of color during her esteemed four decades of covering Major League Baseball. We talked a lot about the pioneering aspect of her career in the first episode, including the time she was thrown out of a team clubhouse. This second episode focuses on some of Claire's favorite baseball stories and people. She takes us to Cuba with President Obama, as well as to London with the Yankees and Red Sox. Claire tells us about her special connection with the great Sandy Koufax. She recounts tales of the Niekro brothers, Joe and Phil. Claire also shares heartfelt memories of Don Baylor, the much-respected player and manager she co-authored two books with. You can listen to part one of my conversation with Smith here: https://evergreenpodcasts.com/press-box-access/claire-smith-part-1-how-you-used-those-barrels-of-ink-mattered#episodeContent Smith spent 32 years in the newspaper industry, starting in Pennsylvania at the Bucks County Courier Times. In 1979, she moved to The Philadelphia Bulletin, where she mostly covered college basketball and football. When that paper folded in 1982, she was hired by The Hartford Courant. By mid-season that year, she was put on the New York Yankees beat, making her the first woman to cover a Major League Baseball team, full-time. Claire covered the Yankees for five years before serving as the Courant's national baseball columnist for three years. She became the New York Times' first national baseball columnist in 1990 and held that role for eight years. In 1998, she moved to the Philadelphia Inquirer, where she was a columnist and assistant sports editor until 2007. Claire left newspapers in July 2007 to become a coordinator editor and baseball remote news editor at ESPN. She worked for the “Sunday Night Baseball” crew and the production team on MLB game broadcasts until November 2021. In December 2016, Smith was named the 68th recipient of the Baseball Writers Association of America's Career Excellence Award (formerly known as the J.G. Taylor Spink Award) – the highest honor a baseball writer can receive. She was the first woman to win the award, and the fourth African American, joining Sam Lacy, Wendell Smith and Larry Whiteside. Claire was honored at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum's annual induction in July 2017. She was also presented the 2017 “Robie Award” for Lifetime Achievement by the Jackie Robinson Foundation. Smith was named the inaugural winner of the Sam Lacy-Wendell Smith Award for the Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism at the University of Maryland in 2013. Other milestones: Sports Journalist of the Year from the National Association of Black Journalists (1997); the Mary Garber Pioneer Award from the Association for Women in Sports Media (2000); the Sam Lacy Award at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (2010); and SAbR's 2021 Dorothy Seymour Mills Lifetime Achievement Award. Smith was a member of the NABJ Hall of Fame's Class of 2021. Claire was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and she was winner of three New York Times Publishers' Awards. Episode 35 of The Far Middle is dedicated to Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro. Nick describes the five-time All-Star knuckleballer as, “proof positive the unconventional and different is a way to make a mark in chosen field.” This Far Middle installment centers around the twisting, turning, and volatility of managing the pandemic. “Our current leaders’ management of pandemic in this nation is now getting as shaky and fluttery as a Niekro knuckleball,” says Nick. Also included in this episode are new “Mask Mania” and “Fauci Focus” segments, as well as a discussion of three industries that the pandemic’s damage will have long-lasting effects on. Nick concludes by wishing a happy birthday to Alexander Hamilton—a well-deserved icon to continue to be the face of our $10 bill.

Joe Rizzo brings you baseball. Riz & Jeff "The Dawg" Healy welcomed former professional baseball player Missy Coombes in honor of International Women's Day and, of course, baseball! Missy (https://twitter.com/MissyCoombes) pitched for the Colorado Silver Bullets, an all-female professional baseball team, from 1994-96. A crafty lefty, Coombes knows the game inside and out. She recounted her amazing story, starting with a zinger for Riz and covering her time with the Silver Bullets, her All-America career on the softball diamond for Cal State Fullerton, her relationship with the Niekro brothers, and general philosophies of pitching and playing from decades of knowledge. She even talked about her unique new-age mentoring of young female baseball player Lillian Martineau (https://twitter.com/Lilli_Martineau) across social media. Dawg got things going with Veteran of the Day. It was General Ann Dunwoody, the first 4-star female general in US Army history. GEN Dunwoody rose through the officer ranks commanding at level. Her last assignment was head of US Army Materiel Command. GEN Dunwoody retired in 2012 after a 38-year career. The Astros all-time franchise leader in career wins with 144, Joe Niekro pitched in 11 seasons with the Astros as part of a 22-year career in the Majors. While the knuckleballer found moderate success prior to joining the Astros, he blossomed into a true ace with Houston. Niekro will be inducted into the Astros Hall of Fame in August and Bill Brown talks about his career. First, Robert Ford and 3B Coach and 5-time Gold Glover Gary Pettis catch up before Saturday’s game against the Rangers.

Joe Niekro was a right-handed pitcher. He was the younger brother of pitcher Phil Niekro, and the father of Major League pitcher and first baseman Lance Niekro. Born in Martins Ferry, Ohio, Niekro attended Bridgeport High School in Bridgeport, Ohio and attended West Liberty University in West Liberty, West Virginia. During a 22-year baseball career, he pitched from 1967–1988 for seven different teams, primarily for the Houston Astros.
Listen, I tried to find a clip of Free Jazz to drop into this episode, but all my options for YouTube rips were 40 minutes long. Here's a link instead. Give it a listen when you have a chance. It's good, I promise. Elsewhere, we bemoan the sorry states of our favorite baseball teams and the inevitability of the Los Angeles Dodgers, declare the winner of the Home Run Derby (sorry this episode was late - we were wrong several times, both intentionally and unintentionally,) and talk about the mystical realm of knuckleballers. Phil and Joe Niekro went head-to-head several times over the course of their long and illustrious careers. But in an utterly bizarre coincidence, 43 years ago this week, Joe hit the only home run in his big league career in more than 1200 plate appearances off of his big brother. In an episode abbreviated by the holiday weekend, Mike and Bill trace their careers from start to finish, pausing only to examine this truly weird moment.
What was it like to play for the Astros in the 1980's? Host Robert Land looks back at his conversation with Kevin Bass and Enos Cabell. Bass remembers the '86 NLCS run, Mike Scott, Nolan Ryan and the special clubhouse. Cabell compares and contrasts Carlos Correa to Cedar Cedeno, shares memories of the 80's team and tells us about his friend J.R. Richard. Please review the show on iTunes.
