Beth Reuschel is a professional military records researcher who helps families discover their legacies of service. She conducts research for people and also coaches them to do their own detective work. Through her expertise and guidance, dozens of people have tracked down service records of veteran parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, as well as brothers and sisters. Beth joins The Scuttlebutt to give us “Military Records Research 101” briefing. She'll offer tips and tricks to guide family history seekers through their own research journeys. If you've ever been curious about your veteran ancestors or family members, you'll want to join us to talk with Beth and ask questions about how to start or get past the obstacles in your way. Beth's own path to archives began with a search for her grandfather, Jack Perz, who died before Beth was born. An airman in Europe, Jack spoke little of the war. He even threw away his uniform in 1945. It was a black hole in her family history. By asking questions and digging into archives, she discovered a picture of his crew, his original Certificate of Discharge (DD-214), his ribbon bar, even his Individual Flight Record. She eventually traced him a B-24 tailgun position in the 766th squadron, the 461st Bomb Group, 15th Army Air Force in Italy. Researching his unit both online and at the National Archives II, she was able to compile a complete list of every single combat mission he flew—all 36 of them– including the target, mission number, accuracy rating, and, for some, the number of the aircraft the crew flew that day. With a little more work, Beth then discovered the Holy Grail for any military researcher: the Official Military Personnel File (OMPF). The OMPF is the official administrative records of a service member's military career. It tracks where they trained, what they qualified to do, where they went, how they performed, what trouble they got into, and most other highlights and lowlights along the way. She requested Jack Perz's OMPF through the National Archives website. She was prepared to be disappointed. Up to 80% of all Army OMPFs were destroyed in the NPRC 1973 fire. It turned out, Beth's grandfather's records were scorched, to be sure, but not totally destroyed. She received 60 pages of his file. And the stories she learned about her grandfather's service provided her relatives, including her grandmother, a source of pride and love for a long lost family member. This first experience taught Beth her biggest lesson in military records research: Don't give up. There will be obstacles and seeming dead-ends. They can seem insurmountable. But the paths to discovery are many, and there's almost always a workaround. Even brick walls can be climbed. Join us to share your questions and our research story! And learn more about Beth's work at reuschelresearch.com. They were the pioneers who trod the territory beyond the sound barrier… a place no man had ever been before and which had killed many who attempted the journey. The rocket powered, winged bullet first flew only 42 years after man's first powered flight, an achievement that still astounds me. To think that a toddler around at Kitty Hawk who saw one of the Wright Brothers first flights, could have heard the world's first man made sonic boom before they reached the ripe old age of 50 is a true testament to the ability of America's finest minds and the bravery of their greatest pilots. Abstract: Poor nutrition during pregnancy causes permanent metabolic and/or structural adaptation in offspring. The adrenal gland produces various steroid hormones during pregnancy. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of diet during pregnancy on the adrenal glands of Wistar rats. For this, 10-week-old pregnant Wistar rats (p, n=15) and non-pregnant rats (np, n=15) were divided into three groups and received a normoproteic control diet (C, 17% casein, n=5), isocaloric low-protein diet (PR, 6% casein, n=5), or 50% calorie restriction (CR, 50% of the diet consumed by group C), over a period of 21 days. On the 21st day of gestation (21dG, p groups) or on the 21st day of diet (np groups), after anesthetic deepening, the right adrenal gland was collected, weighed (total mass), and prepared for inclusion in Paraplast for histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analysis (Ki-67, glucocorticoid receptors (GR), and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR)) in the different areas of the gland. Data, expressed as the mean and SD, were evaluated by one-way analysis of variance with Tukey's post-test (p less than 0.05). CR in pregnancy increased the amount of GR, MR, and Ki-67 receptors in the adrenal gland. The npRC group showed highest GR staining compared to the animals that received a normal diet. Protein restriction in pregnancy decreases adrenal MR. The results allowed us to conclude that even without altering the weight of the adrenal glands, the pRC group suffered the most from stress during the study, suggesting that CR associated with pregnancy can cause morphofunctional changes in the adrenal glands. First, the saga of the 1890 census, a marvel of advanced data collecting at the time that was lost almost completely in a series of events decades later. Then the history guy will talk about the fire at the National Personnel Records Center, which destroyed millions of military records. https://www.magellantv.com/ (MagellanTV) - a brand-new streaming service that features the very best collection of historical documentaries available anywhere. Jeff Felts, from Center Mass, is our guest on the latest episode of the CATO Podcast with Marcus Sprague and Kris Jenny, CATO Training Cadre member. As a young sniper, Jeff found himself well trained, but poorly prepared for a very dynamic hostage situation. This setback sent him on a journey to improve his training and resulted in the formation of Center Mass, the National Patrol Rifle Conference and Championship, and the patrol rifle utilization survey. Each year, participants from around the country compete in a variety of patrol rifle scenarios taken from the streets of America. Jeff retired from law enforcement after serving for twenty years as a Police Officer and Sergeant in suburban Metro Detroit. He is also a veteran of the Army, where he was an MP and in the reserves as an Infantry Drill Sergeant. He also served for 12 years in a part-time capacity with the Western Wayne County Special Operations Team as an Operator, Sniper, and Sniper Team Leader. He holds an associate degree in criminal justice, a bachelor's degree in business administration, and is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command. Jeff is a certified special weapons and tactics instructor, tactical rifle instructor, sniper instructor, pistol instructor, and President of Center Mass, Inc., and serves as an Advisory Board Member of the American Sniper Association (ASA). The pandemic hasn't been especially kind to federal agencies that deal primarily with paper. The National Archives and Records Administration houses millions of military and medical documents that veterans need, to apply for federal benefits. Most are still paper. Employees at the National Personnel Records Center are handling some records requests. But today the center has about 500,000 pending records requests and another 400-thousand records that need refiling. Scott Levins is the director of the NPRC in Saint Louis. In part one of his conversation with Federal News Network's Nicole Ogrysko, he explains how the backlog accumulated.

The New York Times reports of a monkey shortage. But there's no monkey shortage at U.S. labs. The Times was used by vivisectors looking to get more monkeys. Dr.Lisa Jones-Engel, PETA Animal consultant and a one-time primatologist with National Primate Research Centers, crunches the numbers and shows that reports of monkey shortages in U.S. labs are exaggerated at best, if not outright lies. Jones-Engel speculates that the centers are taking advantage of a perception that the monkeys have anything major to do with vaccine development. But only 51 monkeys were involved in the development of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines. Jones-Engel also talks about the real harm to eco-systems when monkeys are taken from Asia and imported to the U.S. because of the billions of dollars involved in the monkey trade. She is an active member of her rural community, serving on the Water Commission and the local food cooperative, as well as Montana-based Northern Plains Resource Council. She represents NPRC to the Western Organization of Resource Councils and to the NFFC. With Doug, she discusses the relentless efforts by multi-national agribusiness and extraction corporations to control our food and agriculture system and what the NFFC is doing in the fight to sustain non-GMO, heritage and indigenous seeds and fresh, potable waterLearn more about her and her work with the National Family Farm Coaltion at www.NFFC.NET
Sheila Collins explains that natriuretic peptides protect mice from the metabolic consequences of a high-fat diet by acting on adipose tissue.
The news includes: FamilySearch ushers in 2012 by adding 119 million new records. The New England Historic Genealogical Society announces education programs at its Boston facility. The Association of Professional Genealogists has added back issues of the APG Quarterly for 2004-2011 available in the Members Only area of its website. Arphax Publishing Co. announces the launch of its historical maps website, HistoryGeo.com. GenSoftReviews announces the 2011 User Choice Awards. Listener email includes: Many condolences have been received from around the world for the passing of Fletcher, our dilute calico cat who "spoke" on many podcasts over the years. She died on 8 December 2011 and is deeply missed. Carole advises us that the Doña Ana County Genealogical Society in Las Cruces, New Mexico, will be holding its first conference in April 2012. She also discusses the recurrent problem of the accuracy of documentation and the conflicting data that can result. Dave recently wrote about his research in St. Croix. Listeners may be interested in reading his blog at http://200inparadise.blogspot.com. Mac tells us that if you are going to order any New York certificates, you might also want to cross-reference the databases at italiangen.org. Rich asks a fascinating question about how to represent the correct country in his RootsMagic software for Canada at different historical periods. Wayne reports that he cannot download the podcast using the latest version of the Ubuntu operating system. The Guys ask other listeners about their experiences with this. Maria asks Hank Jones and The Guys about Palatines in Australia. Sébastien has had good results with the DNA genealogy study between Coombs and Comeau descendants. He recommends the site at en.comeaunet.org/dna/big-annoucement-regarding-antoine-comeau-2/ to our listeners who may have a Coombs ancestor. Joel Weintraub tells us that the discussion on a previous podcast about markings on ships' passenger lists/manifests could also have pointed people to the site at www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/Manifests/. Mark shared with us a publication by the St. Louis Post Dispatch that discusses the new National Personnel Records Center facility. The 12-page PDF document is an excellent overview of the NPRC, where many U.S. military service records are stored. Noi asks for a recommendation of a good website that compares genealogy database software programs. We recommend going to Wikipedia and searching for the phrase “Comparison of Genealogy Software” for some excellent comparisons. Susan asks about whether she should use Family Tree Maker 2012 or RootsMagic. This spurred a detailed discussion by The Guys about the GEDCOM standard and how data is exported from one program and imported to another. They talk about the fact that there will be a need to manually handle some data after the transfer.
Because the thymus expresses the natriuretic peptides (NP) as well as their respective receptors, an involvement of NP in the physiology of this organ has been suggested. To evaluate functional aspects of NP in the thymus, we looked for thymic cells bearing NP receptors (Npr). Furthermore, the regulation of Npr expression by activation of cells and the influence of NP on the proliferation of thymocytes was studied. Expression of receptor messenger RNAs CmRNAs) was examined by PCR and Northern blot. Existence of functional Npr was confirmed by measurement of cGMP, the second messenger of NP. Proliferation of thymocytes upon concanavalin A (Con A) stimulation was analyzed by incorporation of [“Hlthymidine. We report here that thymocytes express mRNAs for the three Npr, namely Npra, Nprb, and Nprc and that activation of Npra and Nprb increases cGMP levels. Stimulation of thymocytes with Con A (1 pg/ml, 48 h) resulted in an increase of mRNA coding for Npra, the receptor specific for atria1 natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide. Nprb and Nprc receptor expression was not altered under these conditions. In agreement with these data only ANP, but not the C-type natriuretic peptide, elicited increased cGMP response in Con A-stimulated cells. ANP inhibited also the proliferation of Con A stimulated thymocytes, whereas C-type natriuretic peptide did not show this effect. These results suggest that ANP affects the complex mechanisms of thymocyte proliferation and differentiation.
