Ireland is set to overtake the United Kingdom in solar PV capacity per capita for the first time, a new study by EnergyEfficiency.ie has revealed. Ireland's overall solar PV capacity reached 1,185 MW in the summer, with more than half of this coming from solar farms of over 5MW. With the CSO's updated population estimate for 2024, Ireland now has 220 watts (W) of solar PV per person - while the UK is just ahead with 252 W per capita. Ireland is expected to have around 1,600 MW by the end of this year - which would mean 297 W of solar per inhabitant in Ireland. With PV capacity growth much higher in Ireland than Britain, we will overtake our neighbours for the first time by the end of 2024. The increase in capacity here has been down to an increase in utility scale solar projects, both large and small, as well as an increase in residential and commercial solar installations. The study looked at where we stand on a per capita basis compared to other European countries. The study found that Ireland falls significantly behind other EU states on a solar per capita basis, but that the gap is quickly closing. Germany, leaders in solar energy in Europe, had 82.6 GW after Q2 2024, and this is expected to reach 88.9 GW by the end of the year. That is 80 times the total solar capacity of Ireland and 978 W per inhabitant - around four times more than Ireland. However Germany is behind the Netherlands when it comes to solar per capita, with the Dutch boasting 1,036 MW of PV per person. Spain was one of the first EU countries to truly embrace solar energy, and in 2023, the country further increased its solar PV capacity by an impressive 28%. This added almost 6 GW to take its overall capacity to 25.5 GW. This means the photovoltaic capacity in Spain is 535 W per inhabitant - more than double that of Ireland. France falls behind both Germany and Spain when it comes to overall solar PV capacity, with 21,100 MW in total at the end of March 2024. With a population of 68 million, this works out at 310 W per person in France. Italy recorded a photovoltaic capacity of over 32GW in March 2024, so its per capita figure is 540 W per person. Ireland remains well behind in terms of overall capacity and capacity per capita compared to Denmark, which was one of the pioneers of PV in Europe. With a similar population to Ireland (5.9 million), Denmark had over 3.5 GW of PV capacity in 2023 - more than double Ireland's capacity on a per capita basis (590 W per person). Sweden also has a higher solar capacity per capita, with 390 W per person as of 2023 - a total of 4.1 GW for its population of 10.5 million. Norway on the other hand has a much smaller solar capacity than Ireland with a similar population. How many households have solar panels in Ireland? It is estimated that around 100,000 households in the State now have solar panels installed - however the distribution of these panels is not spread evenly across the country. In Census 2022, 11% of households in Meath reported having a solar array installed, compared to just 3% in Co. Dublin. The meteoric rise in installations in 2023 due to the removal of VAT has continued into 2024, according to data published by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland. The number of panels being installed has risen again in 2024 despite a slight reduction in the SEAI grant on January 1st. Read the full study at energyefficiency.ie

What are the warmer destinations in the states in May? Joel Saxum: Actually, the weather doesn't look like it's going to be too bad. It's going to be, it's going to be what sounds like I've been talking to some of my friends that they're, what you would expect is a traditional spring in Minnesota. Not snow, not 80 degrees. It looks like 65. So it'll be nice where you can wear a blazer and do your things and not sweat too much. Allen Hall: Is that a promise, Joel, or a wish? Joel Saxum: Weather in the Midwest, it's a wish. Bring flip flops and winter boots. Allen Hall: And Weather Guard will be with AC 883 at ACP. And so if you want to come talk to us, stop by, you'll see us wandering around the halls and making all kinds of noise and reporting, recording podcasts. If you have a company that's involved in wind energy and you want to be on the podcast, that's a good time to talk to us. Our podcast numbers have exploded. So there's a lot of listeners at the moment. And if you want to get your company out in the industry, heard of all around the world. We're a good way to do it. We're absolutely free. And we'd love to talk to you. The other thing that's happening which is I think going to create an earthquake up in Minnesota is that Phil is actually going to go to ACP. You can't believe the amount of leverage it took to get him out of sunny California and go to Minnesota in May. We worked on it for weeks. Joel Saxum: He'll be there though. Smiling. Philip Totaro: This is actually something I'm pretty excited and interested about this time though, because I've never had so much so many potential, partners and customers show up to an event before and so many existing ones as well, there's a lot of people that I'm going to have. It almost feels like we're back to before the pandemic, which is when I was, a lot more enthusiastic about going to these these events and trade shows. There was a lot more payback, frankly when you participated and that diminished a lot. For obvious reasons with the pandemic and whatnot, we weren't getting together in person. But it feels like they're starting hopefully to create an environment that is conducive to the industry flourishing and actually transacting some business. And so that's what's attracting me to, to participate in this thing. I hope that continues and, I'm happy at this point to dip my toe back in the water of participation. Joel Saxum: So if you're in Minnesota, be prepared for a hundred percent increase of people that grew up next to Rick James. Allen Hall: All right, over in New York State the offshore industry has been really hit, and this is due to the state's third solicitation, what they call a third round for offshore wind, and they aim to add four gigawatts offshore. Everybody goes back in time and remembers they had all the sort of the cancellations happened and they re bid everything at the end of last year. That got approved, there were three projects approved, Attentive Wind, Community Offshore Wind, and Excelsior Wind.
Ilika PLC (AIM:IKA, OTCQX:ILIKF) CEO Graeme Purdy tells Proactive's Stephen Gunnion that Agratas, Tata Group's battery business, has joined the SiSTEM project which aims to build a 1.5MWh solid-state battery (SSB) assembly line. Purdy noted that SiSTEM was awarded a £2.7 million grant from the Advanced Propulsion Centre as part of the Automotive Transformation Fund. This grant supports the collaboration with UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UK BIC) and Mpac Group plc to develop a 1.5MW hour solid-state battery assembly line. The line will produce large format pouch cells for electric vehicles (EVs), with scale-up trials to occur at UK BIC using industry-ready equipment. Agratas' participation is primarily to evaluate and design a concept facility for implementing solid-state battery manufacturing at Gigafactory scale. Purdy views this collaboration as a significant validation of Ilika's technology, demonstrating commercial interest in their capabilities. THE CEO In April 2021 Nigel Pocklington was announced as the successor to Juliet Davenport the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Good Energy. This transition is part of the continuing evolution of Good Energy from its roots as a simple green energy provider to a newer world green energy services and 'mobility as a service' provider. Nigel most recently served as Chief Commercial Officer of Moneysupermarket.com Group plc. Prior to this, he held a variety of senior roles within Expedia Inc., including President of eBookers and Chief Marketing Officer of Hotels.com. He spent a decade of his early career at Pearson plc, including a period leading the digital operations of the Financial Times. A DEEPER DIVE INTO THE COMPANY Good Energy have 2 different parts to the business. They supply Renewable energy to domestics & business customers: On 20 January 2022 they announced the disposal of its 47.5MW generation portfolio to Bluefield Solar Income Fund for a total consideration of up to £24.5m. This generation portfolio of two wind farms & six solar farms supplied 15% of their customers. They now have long term power purchase agreements with a community of 1,700 independent UK generators that supply their 277,000 customers. This sale of their generation portfolio was part of their strategy to transition to a higher margin energy services provider. Energy Services, this includes Solar Installation & generation, Heat Pumps & Transport Through acquisitions they now have a business that can install solar panels, heat pumps and manage customers generation. They are the second-largest feed-in-tariff operator in the UK, and has one of the highest profitability/customer in the industry. Transport: They also own 49.9% of Zap-Map, the UK's No.1 EV charging map iOS/Android app. It allows users to search for EV charging points, plan journeys and pay for charging. It has 600,000 customers and recently raised £9m, £5.3m was from from Fleetcor, (NYSE: FLT) is a leading global business payments company that helps businesses spend less by providing innovative solutions that enable and control expense-related purchasing and payment processes. FORECASTS Year Revenue Net profit 2023E £267m £1.75m 2024E £258m £4.55m The net margin is therefore expected to increase from 0.6% in 2023 to 1.7% in 2024, which is more than doubling. They had £38m gross cash at the end of May, which is considerably larger than its market cap. Good Energy rejected a 400p hostile bid in 2021. Canaccord, their brokers, have a target of 475p, current sp 174p. Canaccord: “At our unchanged 475p target, which continues to be based on a sum of-parts, the stock would trade at 13x/8x 2024/25E P/E, and still with a substantial net cash position. We remain Buyers” MY OPINION Good Energy are the original renewable energy company have loyal customers who are of the same ethos, which is to champion green energy decentralisation. As a company they are profitable, pay a dividend and have a big chunk of cash, around £20m. Some of this will be used to acquire complimentary businesses to enable them to expand further into the green energy, higher margin, services sector. This is a sector that is growing and will continue to grow for decades backed by global regulation to cut carbon emissions. Their revenue generation of £240m+ pa means even a slight improvement in margins, which will happen as they transition from energy supplier to energy service provider, could see a major positive re-rating on their valuation. [00:00:44] Allen: And this episode's gonna be one of those cases actually, because we, we, we, we, we talked about vestus sales and they had a huge quarter in the fourth quarter. Last year, 2022 5 billion, over 5 billion euros. That's a, that's an amazing number. And meanwhile, GE Ver Nova's market cap looks to be about 13 billion in total when they break off in GE and beginning of 2024. [00:01:10] Allen: So there's a, a big difference between those two. And, and then we take a quick look this week at Equinor RWE working on some hydrogen projects and of course rosemary has a lot of insight on that. Blue hydrogen, green hydrogen, gray, hydrogen. , no hydrogen, all electric And then we there's a really interesting concept coming out of Purdue and I, I kind of poo poo it, but I don't mean to poo poo it in this episode because it, it is, I like new ideas. [00:01:38] Allen: And Purdue has a new idea about using, essentially a hydro drive using water to drive turbine. Drive generators using the turbines as a power source. Makes sense. And then we, at, at the end here, we talk about EO link. And they're, they have that pyramidal shaped wind turbine, very similar tot Omega here in the States. [00:01:58] Allen: But EEO link is massively ahead and they're gonna make a demonstrator five megawatt demonstrator. That's gonna be a big winter bin. They're hoping to have that in the water by 2024 for an offshore demonst. Genius and glad. I'm glad that they're doing it. I'm Allen Hall, president of Weather Guard Lightning Ticket, and I'm here with my good friend from Wind Power Lab, Joel Saxon and the Pride of Australia, Rosemary Barnes,
In this season of Beyond the Meter, we're taking a closer look at the meaningful impact business energy project have on the world around us. Host John Failla is joined by Jay Harris, Director of Data Center Services and Facilities for Clemson University, and Wayne Johnson, Key Segment Manager for Education at Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions. They discuss their organizations' collaboration on energy infrastructure projects and provide insights into why these projects are critical to the university's overall success. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Data operations at Clemson [04:16] Duke Energy's role in Clemson's upgrades [08:10] The partnership structure [11:38] Flexible contracts that grow as the business need grows [15:54] Impactful Projects [21:11] Major benefits of Duke Energy partnerships [28:23] “Outsourcing vs right-sourcing” Key lessons and tips for innovative energy [33:07] Advice for the academic sector [37:00] The Journey to Success In 2007, due to a breaker labeling error, Clemson University had both of its 20-year-old UPS (uninterruptible power supply) o out. That incident led the university to prioritize upgrades. The university would have needed several years to do the research required to fully understand the design and procurement to get the upgrades done. This is when Clemson turned to Duke Energy for guidance. The university started the conversation with Duke Energy in April of 2007. By mid-November, the university had a new generator, two new UPSs, 250-ton air-cooled water chiller, and four new computer room air handlers. The university went from piecemealing together their strategy to a fully functioning infrastructure. A Board-Approved Financing Option Clemson University worked with Duke Energy to identify areas that are ready to be improved or equipment that needs to be replaced. The university signed a 10-year agreement with Duke Energy and amortizes the cost across the length of that agreement essentially transferring CapEx to OpEx. Instead of needing the funds upfront to purchase and install equipment, the contract spreads the cost across 10 years. This structure has made budgeting a lot easier for the university. Approval is easier with an amortization schedule vs. obtaining approval for millions of dollars upfront. Most university campuses are struggling with deferred maintenance costs, especially in facilities. Now Clemson University's facilities team can propose a solution that removes them from the CapEx competition on campus in exchange for a little more OpEx. Not only will this help with resiliency, sustainability, and efficiency initiatives now, but it will also make sure those goals deliver across the lifespan of those assets. An innovative business model Part of what makes Duke Energy's contracts so successful is their flexibility. Duke Energy has its own in-house structuring, counsel, engineering, and operations teams. These teams determine what each client is good at, and then Duke Energy prices and builds solutions around what the customers do and what they need. As a company, Duke Energy wants to have relationships with customers working collaboratively to deliver solutions across time because that's where the most significant energy savings and reliability services outcomes are found. Considerable savings can occur when working together to develop these contracts and partnerships. Rather than simply selling a product and leaving the rest to the customer, Duke Energy is involved in the design, build, operations and maintenance phases. Working through these phases with a single vendor can save money while achieving the comprehensive outcomes, including sustainability, reliability, and resiliency. Resources & People Mentioned Case Study: Clemson University Information Technology Center Clemson University Note: The above project was performed by Duke Energy's Business Energy Services team. Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions leverages these specialists to deliver innovative solutions to customers. The Federal Government, says 10 states were to contribute 1,000 megawatts of off-grid electricity to the quantum of power being produced across the country. It says each of the states would generate 100MW of solar power, noting that it was currently enabling off-grid electricity projects in their various domains. The Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu, also announced that the Federal Government was set to build a 2.5MW hybrid solar power plant in the Nigerian Defence Academy to enhance security at the institution. The minister noted that to achieve Nigeria's commitment to climate change, the Federal Government was implementing different initiatives targeted at achieving at least 30,000MW generation by 2030 with 30 per cent from renewable energy sources.
Some of the areas of the NEC that we cover in this podcast are: Ground Fault Protection, Ground Fault Detection and interruption (GFDI) term clarified (not to be confused with GFCI), 690.45 Equipment Grounding Conductors (EGC) includes DC and AC not having to increase size of EGC when upsizing current carrying conductor for voltage drop (now also applies to AC PV and modifies NEC 250.122), 250.122 EGC sized based on OCPD, Microgrid Interconnect Device (MID), Interactive Mode vs. Voltage Mode, putting multiple inverters prior to the first OCPD, 705.13 Power Control Systems (PCS) was changed to Energy Management Systems (EMS), EMS was previously just for loads, Tesla Powerwall, PCS is not the part of the EMS that is controlling sources, Batteries as Source and Load, EVs Article 625, and more! Quotes: Bill Brooks (soon to be famous quotes). “Changes in size for voltage drop do not have to increase the size of the equipment grounding conductor” “It's penalizing you for doing the right thing” Bill on 250.122 upsizing the EGC for voltage drop. “All we've done is we've taken the microgrid interconnect device and stuck it inside the inverter” Bill on multimode inverter with 2 AC outputs. “We could have a system that was 50kW going into a 100A service.” [South: at about 49 min, so let's put in intro.] “We have large systems right now, that have a 5MW interconnection that have a 30 PV array on them.” “You can run a 400A feed to a large EV charging area, you can put 20 cars on it.” “The controller would never allow you to draw more than 400A.” “You have a controller that prevents the conductors from receiving too much current.” “At the end of the day, the NEC is all about safety. It's all about, we do not burn buildings down with correctly installed electrical equipment.” This is a recording of part of an NEC workshop at the Intersolar 2022 conference at the Long Beach California Convention Center in January 2022. The workshop was titled: Energy Storage, PV and the NEC. Bill Brooks is instrumental in the process of coming up with material for the NEC for renewable energy systems, especially for solar, energy storage and interconnections. Although the 2023 NEC has not been finalized or published, this is as good of a preview as you can get for knowing what the future will bring. Many manufacturers, engineers, CEOs and other decisionmakers can make better informed decisions about the future, knowing what will be in the National Electrical Code. Bill Brooks is on NEC Code Making Panel 4 (the alternative energy panel) and has been perhaps the most active member of the PV Industry Forum, which is where new material for the NEC for Solar PV, Energy Storage and Interconnections are made. Bill has been working on Codes and Standards for 34 years. Bill Brooks and Sean White also published the book PV and the NEC. Note: This podcast was recorded on an iPhone 13 and to my surprise the recording quality was way better than expected, so we decided to podcast it! WARNING: Bill Brooks and Sean White sometimes think they are funny. If you disagree with this and do not like dad jokes, do not listen to this podcast.

The UK has made a legally binding commitment to net zero emissions by 2050. Boris Johnson recently released a 10-point green plan, which included the claim that all UK households will be powered by wind energy by 2030. The UK Committee on Climate Change has recommended a big expansion of wind and solar but says that up to 40% of electricity in 2050 will need to be firm, low carbon...which means either gas or biomass with carbon capture, or else nuclear. They've also suggested electricity demand will double from now to 2050. While today 18% of UK electricity is supplied by nuclear, almost all of this will disappear by 2030 as the advanced gas reactor fleet is retired this decade. Indeed, of today's electricity generation, none will be on the grid in 2050 except possibly Sizewell B. Gas and wind are growing to dominate the grid with an unhealthy serving of biomass (fuelled by wood pellets imported from the US). 120 GW each of wind and solar are being contemplated to meet climate goals but will result in 500 sq miles of solar farms needing to be built in the densely populated "sunny" south of England and 24,000 5MW offshore wind turbines. The UK enjoys bipartisan support for nuclear power but has committed to private financing with its only new nuclear build financed with a 9% interest rate. Cost remains a serious concern. As Tim Stone, chairman of the UK NIA, has said: "Only two numbers matter in nuclear construction: capital cost and the cost of capital.' Some institutional investors are resportedly shunning the proposed Sizewell C nuclear project, citing uncertainty over environmental, social and corporate governance concerns. However, the UK government is now in negotiations with EDF to find a financing model that reduces the cost of finance and leads to a better deal for consumers. This is likely to involve more government support than previous projects. I am joined by David Watson, a nuclear safety engineer from the UK, to discuss this and more. David has over 10 years' experience in consulting supporting the operation, construction and decommissioning of nuclear power plants. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Generation Atomic blog recently started an instagram channel called atomic trends, which he refers to as the "nuclear dream factory".

POLESTAR OPENS NEW PRODUCTION CENTRE IN CHINA Polestar, the electric performance brand, today opens its first production facility, a key milestone for the rapidly growing car company. The new Polestar Production Centre in Chengdu, China, sets a new industry benchmark in electric vehicle manufacture and will produce the Polestar 1 – an exclusive, carbon fibre-bodied Electric Performance Hybrid. The facility, which has been completed on schedule, will produce vehicles for both China and global export markets with first customer deliveries expected before the end of 2019. The inauguration underlines China’s maturing industrialisation, an improving reputation for quality manufacturing, and, crucially, access to the right skills. Five hundred Polestar 1 cars are planned to be built per year in the new Chengdu facility, with a total of 1,500 planned over a three year production cycle. https://www.polestar.com/press-release/2019/08/27/polestar-announces-world-manufacturer-identifier-and-opens-new-production-centre-in-china ELON MUSK IS RUMORED TO UNVEIL FIRST CHINA-MADE TESLA MODEL 3 AT EVENT THIS WEEK "Tesla CEO Elon Musk is going to Shanghai later this week, and he is now rumored to unveil the first China-made Tesla Model 3 at an event on Thursday." reports Fred at Electrek who does say you should take this one with a pinch of salt: "On Thursday, Musk is set to kick off the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai with a fireside chat with Alibaba cofounder Jack Ma. Musk confirmed that he also plans to launch a Chinese division of his Boring Company during the trip. Both of those things don’t have much to do with Tesla, but Shanghai is also where Tesla is currently building Gigafactory 3, the automaker’s first Chinese factory. Now local media reports are suggesting that Musk also plans to unveil the first China-made Tesla Model 3 at the WAIC." https://electrek.co/2019/08/27/elon-musk-tesla-china-made-model-3-rumor/ THE UPGRADED VW PLUG-IN HYBRID "The Volkswagen Passat GTE has been given an EV range boost thanks to a larger capacity lithium-ion battery pack." reports CarAdvice.com.au: "The Passat GTE's battery capacity has been boosted from 9.9kWh to 13kWh. Electric-only driving range under the WLTP standard is now rated at 56 kilometres for the sedan, and 54km in the wagon. With this boost in battery capacity, Volkswagen claims the Passat GTE is capable of completing most commutes around major European cities without any tailpipe emissions. The rest of the drivetrain remains unchanged with a 115kW 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine and an 85kW electric motor built into the six-speed dual-clutch transmission." https://www.caradvice.com.au/787212/2020-volkswagen-passat-gte-gains-bigger-battery/ FARADAY FUTURE RUMORED TO RESTRUCTURE "Embattled Chinese electric vehicle maker Faraday Future (FF) has added another chapter to its tumultuous history, as the company is rumored to be restructuring its organization and CEO Jia Yueting will step down as the firm’s leader." according to PenDaily.com: "Following FF’s very public break up with the Chinese real estate giant and lead financier, Evergrande Group, the electric vehicle company lacked the funds to continue much of its operations. FF was forced to lay off many employees and sell its Los Angeles headquarters. With Jia stepping down as the leader of the firm, the company should be able to try and revive itself, whether that is via a joint venture partnership or some other type of structural reorganization." https://pandaily.com/faraday-future-to-restructure-ceo-to-step-down/ BMW IX3 TO BE AVAILABLE IN EUROPE FIRST IN 2020 "As we approach 2020, the picture of BMW iX3 market launch becomes clearer. This new model, actually the first with the 5th EV generation drivetrain from BMW, is scheduled for production in China in 2020 by BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture in Shenyang." so says InsideEVs: "Unofficially, the first version of the iX3 will be rear-wheel-drive with a 75 kWh battery pack named sDrive75. With more than 200 kW of power, probably up to around 200 miles of real-world range and 150 kW DC fast-charging capability, the most important factor will be the price - it must be competitive with the highly anticipated Tesla Model Y. sales to start in 2020 in Europe, then also in China and North America" https://insideevs.com/news/367360/bmw-ix3-first-in-europe/ ELECTRIFIED ICEBREAKER REACHES NORTH POLE "A Norwegian Coast Guard icebreaker equipped with ABB’s Azipod electric propulsion system has reached the North Pole as part of an international environmental research expedition." according to electrive: "The KV Svalbard, built in 2001, was on its way in Arctic waters as part of the Coordinated Arctic Acoustic Thermometry Experiment (CAATEX). In this episode, Mitchell Levy and co-host Josh Jones had an inspiring conversation about having a "laser-focused mindset" with special guest Steven Spencer Elliot, the Senior Director Client Development at Branded Entertainment Network. They talked about how it can help entrepreneurs, salespersons, and anyone who want to get things done properly and successfully. Steven is very observant and likes to pay attention to people’s best practices. He finds ways for him, along with others, to live those practices. His objectives are for him to become his potential, be an aid to those he works with, and not become complacent. He loves hard work, feedback, and knows how to push himself. Success is a motivator for him. Whether it's his own personal success or that of those close to him. You can reach Steven Spencer Elliot on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stevenspencerelliott/ or you can text him at: 801-819-6888. For nearly 4 years after that he has been selling and managing a sales team for Vivint Solar. Josh has worked in CA, AZ and CT. He has personally installed nearly 3 MW. In 2017 Josh's team installed around 5MW. The crowning achievement of his career thus far is authoring two books on sales and achieving off-the-charts success. The titles are "$300K @ 26" and "Don't Knock it Till You Knock it". A fundamental belief Josh has is, as Zig Ziglar said, "You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want." Jordan LaPlace was successful, but he wasn’t quite living up to his potential. He always had the bug to sale, as a kid he even sold hot dogs just to satisfy the need to achieve. In college, he got his first real sales job selling B2B office products and decided that his future was in selling and he no longer needed to spend time on schooling. Jordan spent about 5 years selling various services, before ending up in solar energy sales. He was well established and had seen some success, but in the end of 2014, he made a decision that would change his life. He put together a plan that helped him to earn in excess of $1 million in commissions, and plans to create $3 million in 2016. Jordan made way more than just your average shift; in this episode, he tells us exactly what he did and how you can start crushing it too Josh Jones's door-to-door (D2D) career began with a 2 year service mission for the LDS church. We can often feel tempted to use the word 'but' when relaying bad news or disagreeing with someone which can backfire and hamper conversations. Fortunately, there is a better way. Josh and Mitchell talk about the concept of replacing the word 'but' with 'and' to transform our conversations. They reveal the advantages of adopting this approach and the best way to apply it. Thursday 12th April 2018. As a treat, or punishment depending on your point of view, you get two podcasts today for the price of one. And as that price is free, I’ll give you a full refund if you’re not satisfied! As well as the news, you can hear the first in a series of shows the infrastructure around electric cars. We talk about cars a lot, but what’s it going to take to make the whole ecosystem work. So for the first episode we head to the maker of some of the worlds most luxurious cars – Bentley. Work starts this week at on a giant solar carport, which will be the UK's largest when complete, at 2.7MW. The company behind it is called FlexiSolar and they'll be fitting 10,000 panels to frames which will shelter almost 1,400 car parking spaces at Bentley’s manufacturing headquarters near Crewe. The carport will take Bentley’s on-site solar capacity to 7.7MW having also installed 5MW of rooftop solar in 2013. And on our special edition today, we talk to Adam Goves from the company. If I do say so, i think it's a fascinating chat about using car parks as power stations for electric cars... So if you are thinking of listening, i'm publishing the interview a few minutes after this show, so it will show up in your podcast feed and on YouTube right next. I do hope you enjoy it, and i've got more interviews coming soon. PAGANI DEVELOPING ELECTRIC HYPERCAR At the recent Geneva Motor Show, Horacio Pagani, whose car company bears his name, committed to electrification: “There is electric-car research already ongoing,” Pagani said. “That is not something you can just pretend not to see, that everyone is developing something in this direction. The management is already organizing the company to have a division specifically for electric cars. Already, by the end of 2018, the idea is to have a section where electric cars can be developed and tested. “The technologies and safety standards you need are completely different from any combustion-engine car production—we’re talking about 800 volts—so all of the training and the technicians will have to be up to the standards to work on such a vehicle.” https://www.caranddriver.com/news/pagani-starts-work-on-an-electric-supercar BOLT SOFTWARE UPDATE According to GMAuthority: “General Motors has officially responded to reports of isolated battery cell failure in 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV models. In response to the possible issue, the automaker will roll out a software update for Bolt EV that dealerships will perform free of charge. GM told InsideEVs that the recall is not a safety recall, but asked that all owners participate in the software update. Some owners have reported battery cell failure that leaves the Bolt EV without drive power. After analyzing OnStar data, GM noted the issue seems isolated to very early production units of Bolt EV. http://gmauthority.com/blog/2018/04/gm-issues-software-update-over-potential-battery-cell-failure-in-some-2017-bolt-ev/ DO YOU WANT TO SOUND LIKE AN ICE? From those fast Pagani’s, to a record breaking Tesla Roadster Gen2, to the crazy Rimac C_Two, electric cars aren’t short of performance. But what about sound? It seems like some people want the old engine noise. Soundracer make a gadget that you wire into your electric car to make it sound like your choice of angry combustion engines on the inside and the outside. https://newatlas.com/soundracer-ev-engine-sound-eveess/54140/ FUTURE AUDI PHEV SPOTTED Spy shots of the performance crossover SUV the Audi SQ3 which is being built on the SQB platform. And that of course opens the door to plug in and electric powertrains. Autoguide say “The current Q3 is the oldest model in Audi’s lineup, so expect some fairly significant changes, especially since the segment has gotten a bit more crowded.” http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2018/04/2020-audi-sq3-surfaces-for-the-first-time.html MITSUBISHI COULD PRODUCE PERFORMANCE EV Don Swearington, chief operating officer and executive vice president of Mitsubishi Motors North America, told Digital Trends in an interview published on Tuesday that the future is wide open for electrified cars. He made it clear that Mitsubishi will look at both plug-in and pure battery-electric vehicles. On the topic of electrified performance vehicles, Swearington specifically said, “there’s a great opportunity. “I think our engineers in Japan would love to develop something like that,” he added. Well now, according to scmp.com: “Global carmakers received a double dose of good news from China’s President Xi Jinping on Tuesday: a reduction in import tariffs and a raised investment cap with regards to mainland-based factories. New energy carmakers such as Tesla are set to become the top beneficiaries of a relaxation by Beijing on foreign ownership in the automobiles sector”. Coming first to mind is Tesla who have long wanted to make cars in China but not wanted to sign over half the factory to a local manufacturer. http://www.scmp.com/business/global-economy/article/2141148/xi-puts-chinas-car-industry-top-gear-plans-raise-foreign I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
