Lonestar Data Holdings is a pioneering company that offers Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) from the Moon. On this edition of The Ex Terra Podcast, Tom Patton talks with Chris Stott, the Founder and CEO of Lonestar Data Holdings. In February, Lonestar successfully demonstrated the concept of data storage and retrieval from the Moon as part of the Intuitive Machines IM-1 mission. From the surface of the Moon, Lonestar's Independence payload successfully completed the first ever data center test in their proof-of-concept demonstration. This included the transmission of the Declaration of Independence from Earth to the Moon and the receipt back from the Moon of a copy of the US Constitution and Bill of Rights, all while ensuring data storage on the Moon for the State of Florida. Stott says that his market is terrestrial. Lonestar uses space to serve that market. "This idea of where to keep your data, data has a passport. Especially if you're regulated data from a country or a company, it's finding the right location that offers you protection under data sovereignty laws, as well as access to your data in a safe and secure manner. For us, space was that solution." Lonestar recently announced their second lunar data center mission, the Freedom Payload, scheduled to launch with Intuitive Machines on their IM-2 Lander.
Time flies when you're having fun! While the last five years have had plenty of ups and downs, they haven't dented the enthusiasm and passion of small-cap fund manager Chris Stott from 1851 Capital. Stott launched 1851 Capital in 2020, just before COVID-19 hit, wreaking havoc on the market and his portfolio. Since then, Stott has comfortably beaten his small-cap benchmark, growing the fund's initial capital of $80 million to almost $500 million through a combination of inflows and capital growth. Whilst there was some exuberance after the initial shock of the pandemic, the past few years have been far more challenging for small-caps investors. “Over the past four and half years, the small-cap index has returned 3% per annum. If you look at the 30 years before we launched the fund, it was 10% per annum. So quite a significant underperformance, quite dismal in fact,” Stott says. However, late October 2023 marked a turning point and the small-cap index has recently entered a technical bull market, having rallied more than 20%. So where to from here and which companies does Stott believe can sustain the early track record that 1851 Capital has established? In this episode of The Rules of Investing, Stott shares his lessons from starting a new fund, why he believes the bull run in small caps can continue and five of the stocks he is backing to deliver market-beating returns. For those of you with a good memory, Stott was last on the podcast in June 2020, when he tipped NextDC (ASX: NXT) as the one stock he would hold if markets were to close for the next five years. Shares in NextDC have gained more than 75% over that time, and the company is now in the ASX100, forcing Stott to exit his position. Naturally, we've asked him for a fresh idea. Neil Koenig, former BBC Producer/Director and now ideaXme board advisor interviews Chris Stott, Founder, CEO and Chair of Lonestar Data Holdings Inc. Neil comments: Space entrepreneurs often have grand visions. As the billionaire Elon Musk explained, in a BBC Radio 4 documentary I produced some 15 years ago, his dream is to help mankind become a space-faring civilisation by lowering the cost of interplanetary travel. Today, Mr Musk is making progress, as his company SpaceX continues to build ever bigger rockets and win new customers. And according to fellow entrepreneur Chris Stott, there has indeed been a dramatic fall in the cost of space transport, largely because of the work that SpaceX and its rivals have been doing. As a result, many opportunities for new businesses have emerged. Chris Stott has long been fascinated by space, and he has worked in the industry throughout his career; his wife Nicole is a former NASA astronaut. He now has an audacious plan: to put data centres on the Moon. It sounds like a crazy idea, but Mr Stott is deadly serious. He says that, because the costs of space travel have come down so much, the project is now eminently feasible. In this interview with me for ideaXme, Chris Stott talks of his passion for space, why he thinks it is vital for human society to have data backups in places beyond Earth, and why he believes that the survival of human civilisation depends on mankind successfully venturing into space. A Moon Landing And a Test Launch - Two Events That Could Change Almost Everything The White House says it wants, “to achieve the goal of enabling human transportation and settlement within the solar system.” There are two, possibly seismic, events about to happen in the space ecosystem that could help: The ispace moon landing and SpaceX's first orbital flight test of its Starship super-heavy rocket. To understand what this could mean for the civil, commercial, and defense space sectors, Laura Winter speaks with Chris Quilty, Founder of Quilty Analytics; George Pullen, MilkyWay Economy's Chief Economist; Chris Stott, a serial space entrepreneur, and the Chairman & CEO, Lonestar Data Holdings; and Peter Garretson, a senior fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council and co-author of the coming book “The Next Space Race: A Blueprint for American Primacy”.
Why Virgin Orbit's Chapter 11 Filing and The Silicon Valley Bank Failure Matter The commercial space ecosystem is weathering multiple storm systems. First, there was the Silicon Valley Bank failure. This week the publicly listed launch company Virgin Orbit, and its subsidiaries - including its defense division Virgin Orbit National Systems - filed for Chapter 11 protection. To understand how these events affect the commercial space sector, which the Department of Defense is relying on more and more, Laura Winter speaks with Chris Quilty, Founder of Quilty Analytics; George Pullen, MilkyWay Economy's Chief Economist; and Chris Stott, a serial space entrepreneur, and the Chairman & CEO, Lonestar Data Holdings.

The risk of start up in an industry as complex as commercial space and satellite is made even more intense by the challenges that are part of our business. Yet all around the world, people are looking at the opportunities, the new space of space and making the leap. These are our innovators, and this podcast series will bring them to you. The fifth episode of this series features a conversation with Chris Stott, Founder, Chair and CEO of Lonestar Data Holdings, Inc. Chris Stott is the Founder, Chair and CEO of Lonestar Data Holdings Inc., the Lunar information, technology and communications company. Chris is also the Founder and Non-Executive Chair of ManSat, the world's largest commercial provider of satellite spectrum. Chris serves as the Chair Emeritus, alongside the late Sir Arthur C. Clarke, of the Space and Satellite Professionals International (SSPI), the largest professional association in the global space and satellite industry, which also named him Satellite Industry Mentor of the Year for 2015.
When you think of industry leaders, large caps probably come to mind. Think iron ore giant BHP, biotechnology behemoth CSL, or global logistics software provider WiseTech. But that's not to say there aren't bourgeoning industry leaders within the micro-cap end of the market. In fact, many small stocks have already made a name for themselves, and have become the go-to for their products and services on the global stage. So in this episode, Livewire's Chris Conway was joined by 1851 Capital's Chris Stott and Yarra Capital Management's Joel Fleming for their analysis of three micro-cap stocks making serious strides. Plus, our fundies also each name one micro cap with an enviable market position. Note: This episode of Buy Hold Sell was filmed on Wednesday, 14th September 2022. You can read an edited transcript below: https://www.livewiremarkets.com/wires/buy-hold-sell-5-industry-leading-micro-caps/
After a few months of episodes at the top end of town, the team here at Buy Hold Sell thought we would take a trip along the road less travelled. Why? Well, micro caps are often under-researched, undervalued and underappreciated by investors. This means these stocks can potentially produce outsized returns - far greater than those seen in the large-cap end of the market. But not all micro caps are created equal. These companies are often far less transparent, far less liquid, and can carry a hell of a lot more risk. So in this episode, Livewire's Chris Conway makes his Buy Hold Sell debut alongside 1851 Capital's Chris Stott and Yarra Capital Management's Joel Fleming for a look at three undiscovered micro-cap gems. Plus, they also each name one much-loved micro-cap with serious headwinds on the horizon. Note: This episode of Buy Hold Sell was filmed on Wednesday, 14th September 2022. Now pushed back to Friday, NASA is billing the $4.1b Artemis I mission launch, a test of the Space Launch System and the crew-rated Orion capsule, as the beginning of a new chapter of U.S.-led human space exploration and sustained presence on the moon. Putting the warm and fuzzy excitement aside, Laura Winter explores the geostrategic and economic implications with Namrata Goswami, an independent scholar on space policy and great power politics and co-author of the book “Scramble for the Skies”; Chris Quilty, a pioneer of Wall Street analysis of the commercial space sector and founder of Quilty Analytics: and Chris Stott, “a Manx-Born American", who is a serial space entrepreneur, and the Chairman & CEO, Lonestar Data Holdings.

In this third year of our Summer Fun podcast series, we again talk with industry leaders and some of space and satellite's most interesting people to find out something about them you may not know. This year's question is: “What did you learn about the commercial space & satellite industry that you didn't learn in school?” For the fifth episode of Summer Fun – School's Out, we hear from Chris Stott, Founder, Chair and CEO of Lonestar Data Holdings, Founder and Non-Executive Chairman of ManSat, SSPI Chair Emeritus and the 2015 Mentor of the Year.
Chris Stott has created several successful space businesses and organizations. Yet when he first told me about his stealth project a few months ago, I was more than a little skeptical. Could data storage on the Moon actually work? Now that Lonestar Lunar has come out of stealth mode, Chris can explain what the company is doing and why. Cold Star Project host Jason Kanigan asks Chris Stott: What problem are you solving? Who will use it? How did the business case present itself? How was the executive team chosen? Why is it cheaper to build a data center on the Moon rather than on Earth? What are the steps involved in implementing your solution? Who are you dependent upon eg. launch provider to put equipment there? Do you have sites chosen? What improvements do you need to make to commercial data storage & transmission equipment to have it survive this environment? In your other life at Mansat you've developed considerable competency in the field of spectrum. Given the volume of data I imagine you'll be moving back and forth, is there any extra requirement? How should early adopters contact you? Chris joins David to discuss his fund, the 1851 Capital Emerging Companies Fund. Since inception in Feb 2020 till Dec 2021, the fund had produced a compound growth rate of 33% p.a. Chris explains why he believes that the small-cap sector is the most inefficient part of the market, where fund managers can deliver the largest amount of outperformance to clients. He attributes much of this to the lack of broker coverage when compared to larger-cap counterparts. Chris and David also discuss the methodology that 1851 applies when analysing businesses and their management. Chris identifies the importance of even the smaller details when interviewing senior leadership teams, such as the subtleties of body language. Working for more than 18 years in the Australian funds management industry, Chris has extensive experience investing in Australian equities. Most recently, Chris was the Chief Investment Officer and Portfolio Manager at Wilson Asset Management Pty Limited (WAM) During his tenure as Chief Investment Officer at WAM, group funds under management (FUM) grew from $300 million to over $3 billion. In 2014, the Australian Financial Review named Chris as one of the Five Best Young Fund Managers in Australia.

I invite you to call to mind the great contests of the recent past. Ali versus Foreman! Fischer versus Spassky! Federer versus Nadal! Gatting versus Warne! Actually, maybe scratch that last one - but you get the picture. These were titanic tussles with everything at stake, all to play for, and no quarter given. Glorious triumphs and disastrous defeats that could bring a tear to even a psychopath's eye. Now, in a worldwide first (we assume), we give you the Battle of the Small Caps! Chief adjudicators of this soon to be fabled duel include Marcus Burns from Spheria and Chris Stott from 1851 Capital. In this very special thematic episode of Buy Hold Sell, the two small-cap specialists pit fan favourites against each other and crown winning stocks from each sector, leaving the rest out to dry. We'll pit NRW Holdings against Mader Group. Temple and Webster against Nick Scali. CSR against Fletcher Building. And Pro Medicus against Healius. And just because we are feeling generous, our fundies also throw in two exciting opportunities within the small-cap arena. Who knew that Buy Hold Sell could get any better? Note: This episode was filmed on 27 May 2021.
They say that it is an investor's best ideas that produce the best returns. It sounds simple, right? (Right?) And yet, investors and fund managers' portfolios consistently balloon out to 40, 50, or even 60 holdings or more, with diversification for downside protection often to blame. And while no one - and I mean no one - likes to see their portfolio in the red, Harvard Business School researchers Miguel Antón, Randolph Cohen, and Christopher Polk recently found that a portfolio of high-conviction holdings - AKA your best ideas - actually statistically outperforms. In fact, they found that active and hedge fund managers' top ideas outperform the market - as well as their other holdings - by approximately 2.8-4.5% per annum. Meantime, the vast majority of the other stocks these managers hold don't exhibit this significant outperformance. So, in this episode of Buy Hold Sell, Livewire's Ally Selby is joined by arguably the best Aussie small-cap managers in the country - Chris Stott from 1851 Capital and Marcus Burns from Spheria, for their analysis of their best three ideas. Plus, they'll share their thoughts on each other's top holdings too. Note: This episode was filmed on 27 May 2021.

Since the market bottomed in late March, the S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries Index has soared over 40%. However, it's evident that the rebound is thus far two-tiered in nature; e-commerce and technology-oriented stocks have done much of the heavy lifting and left nearly everything else in their wake. The key question for investors now is whether the dichotomy in sector performance presents an opportunity to take profit from the exuberantly expensive 'online' stocks and redeploy it into the laggards... or is it the case that the world really has changed and the COVID-19 winners will keep on winning? Here, Gary Rollo of Montgomery and Chris Stott from 1851 Capital discuss this thematic and whether its time for investors to make a big portfolio pivot into the small caps which have been behind. Visit Livewire Markets to access the video and edited transcript for this episode. Note: This episode was recorded on 9 September 2020.

A tornado has ripped through markets in the last three months, knocking the S&P/ASX 200 Index down 30% in just 30 days. The long-awaited sell-off in markets has finally arrived and as is usually the case, the bears are sinking their teeth hardest into the small fish, with the S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries Index off over 20% in the past month. But the five stocks in today's episode aren't just any small caps; 3 of them (EML Payments, City Chic and WISR) featured in the fundies' #1 stock picks for 2020; 1 (Nanosonics) was nominated as a quality to stock buy at a cheaper price, and the last (Breville Group) is a company that both of our featured guests have a common view on. These stocks have on average lost a third of their value over the last 30 days, with WISR plummeting over 70%. Is now the time for investors to put a brave face on, or should they bite the bullet?
