The Parking Association believes multiple changes are needed for chasing up unpaid fines. In the three years to the end of 2024, just 68% of almost $29 thousand Auckland Transport fines were paid in part or in full. While AT says it's not a straightforward process, Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown says he's asked for advice on making them better debt collectors. Association chair Mike Kelly told Mike Hosking the psychology around it is one major issue. He says there are lots of people who get tickets daily for repetitive offences and aren't too bothered, and the tickets end up with the Ministry of Justice. Increased fines and even penalty points are being tipped as potential solutions to stop motorists illegally parking in Clare's disabled bays. Although the total number of parking fines issued countywide dropped by a third last year, the number of fixed charged notices for parking in a disabled bay without a valid permit went up by more than 9% in Ennis alone. It was also the most common offence in Kilrush accounting for one in three fines there last year. If you were in a bit of a rush yesterday morning, I dunno - perhaps somehow you were caught out by daylight saving and you scrambling to get to an appointment - and you forgot to put money in the meter before rushing off, you'd have been fined $40. If you did it today, exactly the same offence, you'd be fined $70. Almost double. Parking fines are up for the first time in twenty years and errant parkers will be facing stricter penalties across the board. I don't have an issue with the higher fines. If you don't want to be fined, pay for your parking. It's pretty simple. But despite supporting higher fines, Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown isn't happy with the regime. He takes issue with the fact that fines are still set by central Government under the Land Transport Act, rather than local councils. I think he's got a good point. It seems absurd to me that for all the talk about localism, councils are still relying on an edict from Wellington to set their parking fines. If a council can't be relied on to set appropriate parking fines, how on Earth can expect it to manage a balance sheet, consenting or complex infrastructure planning? And Wayne Brown's quite right - there's no reason that fines in congested city centres should be the same as parking fines on the main street of a regional town. Central government says it wants local councils to be focused on the basics. Setting the parking fines within its own jurisdiction qualifies as a basic, for me. A lawyer says it would be useful to have a look at regulations around parking fines. Some concert goers at a Foo Fighters show in Auckland were left hundreds of dollars out of pocket after a parking scam led to them being towed. Clifton Chambers Barrister Ben Hamlin says people will have to pay the fee, but they can raise a dispute after the fact around if the fee was reasonable. He told Tim Dower that there's room for reform. Hamlin says there should be a maximum fee for private towing, same as there is for public carparks. A storm's brewing over a Bay of Plenty Coffee cart and some instant parking tickets. The drive through coffee shop is on a lot behind a service station at Tauriko on State Highway 29 just out of Tauranga. The Bean n Gone cart owner apparently leases the site and uses another company to police the parking. Painter Peter Wise pulled into get a couple of takeaway coffees, pausing long enough for his workmate to hop in the van. It turned out to be one of the most expnesive caffeine hits in the bay. The nasty aftertaste kicking in about a week later when he got a ticket in the mail. Paul Marston from Tauranga Tasting Tours believes it's just a massive money spinner. One of his drivers got pinged when he stopped on the lot to pick up a passenger. He reckons the signs posted by Parking Services Limited are small and obscured and the fines are grande. Daniel Haines owns Driven Auto, it neighbours the Bean n Gone lot. He noticed a camera go up on a pole several weeks back Daniel says annoyingly some people do block the coffee drive through and that is not on. But most genuinely mistake the site for a parking lot and he is frequently warning people to steer clear. Checkpoint contacted Parking Services Limited boss, Jacob Thomas. He declined to be interviewed, asked Checkpoint to email him questions and then hung up. Checkpoint emailed him, asking questions about his signage, what he defines as parking, the number of tickets he's issued, what constitutes a fair fine and how much he is adding on for late payments. We are yet to receive a response. Checkpoint has also contacted the owner of the property occupied by the coffee cart and Gull Service station.
