We're trying something new and doing a throwback episode. Season 1, Episode 4 was an early darling amongst REPOD listeners. Guests Anne and Chris Lukeman of CU Adventures were such delightful guests.  Back then, neither David nor Peih-Gee had played their in person games (but they loved their digital and tabletop games). Since then, David has gone to Champaign-Urbana, and fell further in love with their work.  With that in mind, Room Escape Artist is hosting Escape Immerse Explore: Time & Space 2025 (Chicago to Champaign-Urbana) in the spring of 2025. Tickets are available now for Session 1 (Sunday, April 27th – Tuesday, April 29th 2025) and Session 2 (Tuesday, April 29th – Thursday, May 1st 2025).  Get your ticket now, while supplies last.     Production Credits Hosted by David Spira & Peih-Gee Law Produced by Lisa Spira Music by Ryan Elder Logo by Janine Pracht

In this episode, David's wife and business partner, Lisa, joins us again in the Bonus Show to reflect on 10 years of Room Escape Artist. She paints a picture for us of the early years, when it was just David writing reviews in their living room.   They talk about how their writing style has changed as they've added more writers to the team, and we discuss some escape room industry trends. There's also a trivia game I crafted based on the number 10.   In this preview, Peih-Gee tells a story about how AI changed her writing style, and Lisa and David talk about why it's important that reviews are written in the past tense.   If you enjoy these previews, I hope you'll consider joining our Patreon. For only $5 a month, you'll get access to our Bonus Aftershow, where we continually release new episodes, even in our REPOD off-season.

In Season 5, Episode 3, we chat with Leroux Botha, the executive producer who managed to revive the production of Survivor South Africa, largely through grit and sheer moxie, after it had been dead in the water. Leroux shares his journey from Survivor super-fan to content producer, to eventually creating his own version of the show. Survivor South Africa is really a fan love letter to the show. He pays homage to past challenges and prefers to keep twists and turns to a minimum. Instead, Leroux chooses to focus on engaging and straightforward storytelling instead of sneaky editing to designed to maximize drama.   Leroux is a self-proclaimed geek at heart, and he shares some of the many Easter eggs he slipped into Season 9, Return of the Outcasts. Some of these are nods to Star Trek, Stargate, and even Magic the Gathering. (Be still, David's heart.) He also shares some behind-the-scenes insights into the production and casting process. Peih-Gee talks about her experience during the casting process for Survivor China and how the producers ask leading questions to create more drama. LeRoux talks about a much smaller budget has forced them to be more creative. I really enjoyed hearing about Survivor from the producer's side, especially when the producer is a scrappy fan who managed to create a compelling homage to the show he loves so much. Survivor South Africa is well loved in part because it reaches for the same magic that made old school Survivor so compelling. I hope this episode convinces you to give it a watch.   Full with Show Notes Timestamps Episode Sponsors Thank you to our sponsors:  Morty Morty is a free app for discovering, planning, tracking, and reviewing your escape rooms and other immersive social outings. In Season 4, Episode 9, we share stories from Ukraine. We talk to Nataliya (Tasha) Tarkhanova of Hypno Dive, creator of the Project Avatar series of virtual escape room games. Project Avatar is an incredible virtual experience that plays like a live-action video game, where you are directing a live actor (the Avatar) through an enormous abandoned warehouse. With stylish, acrobatic moves and impressive special effects, tech and visuals, Project Avatar was a high point in quarantine-era virtual escape rooms. Then war happened. On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which began in 2014. This episode is a bit of a departure for us, but we wanted to share Tasha's story. We begin with discussion of Project Avatar and escape rooms, but in the second half of this episode, we dive into how the invasion has turned Tasha's life upside-down. It's a heavy episode. It's not graphic and there are no explicit depictions of death or violence, but Tasha candidly shares stories of the upheaval in her life and business. There is an emotional story of the war's impact on her daughter that brought both David and Peih-Gee to tears.     The stories that you're going to hear are tragic and hilarious and kind of off-the-wall. Tasha is resilient, creative, and captivating. We think that this is a really important story to tell.   We are donating all of REPOD's income from this episode to Direct Relief, earmarked for the crisis in Ukraine. Next up on our global tour, in Season 4, Episode 3, David and Peih-Gee go down under with The Doctor and The Alchemist, aka, Aaron Hooper and Leanne Yong from Next Level Escape in Sydney, Australia. They gave a fantastic talk at RECON '21, Playing with Game Structure: the Macro of Mechanics. In this podcast, they go into more depth about designing unusual game mechanics like their game, The Game, a competitive escape room where players go head to head, battling for objectives, or The Show Must Go On, which is part audio play, part interactive performance and part escape room. Leanne and Aaron both came from finance backgrounds—Aaron previously worked as an economist and Leanne as a business analyst. They combined their hobbies of tech, writing, and gaming to create some very fun escape rooms with humor, loads of player interactions, and unique gameplay. Because of their backgrounds in business, it was very interesting to chat with them about the economics of running an escape room, especially when they are located in the heart of the Central Business District and run games for lots of corporate groups. After chatting with them on the podcast, it was clear that Leanne and Aaron put a lot of love and thought into creating their escape rooms, especially when it comes to creating innovative game mechanics.   Show Notes   Episode Sponsors Thank you to our sponsors:  Morty - A free app for discovering, planning, tracking, and reviewing your escape rooms and other immersive social outings. We're kicking off Season Four of Reality Escape Pod with a RECON Boston recap! David and Peih-Gee are joined by Lisa Spira and Theresa Wagner. RECON was an incredibly special event with brilliant talks, amazing lobby parties, and some very special escape rooms. Magic was definitely in the air.   We recap the talks from industry leaders and discuss the amazing ARG (alternate reality game) created especially for RECON. David and Lisa give us insight on some of the aspects designed to help the convention run more smoothly. We look back fondly on the lobby parties, and Peih-Gee talks about her nefarious goal of making David cry at RECON (and how it backfired). We listen to voicemails from attendees, discuss our top secret special guest, and replay his incredible imitation of David.   RECON was truly a magical experience, judging by the response from attendees. It was a celebration of the escape room community, an experiment, and a knowledge share... We look forward to making more RECON magic in the future.   Episode Sponsors Thank you to our sponsors:  Morty - A free app for discovering, planning, tracking, and reviewing your escape rooms and other immersive social outings. We recommend listening to that episode before you listen to this one. After getting stuck on donuts and pies, it was a relief to know that Dani and Bill had graciously reserved one of their harder rooms for us. We dissect some of the puzzles in the game and debate the merits of various puzzle design etiquette, including common expectations like prop reuse and crossword puzzle rules. If you enjoyed these episodes, we hope that you'll check out Escape This Podcast and listen to more of their wonderful audio escape rooms. Anthony is an old school larper (Live Action Role Play) who also happened to play Survivor, which is one of the most immersive games in the world. Larping is one of the original forms of immersive gaming, and it was a blast chatting with him about the different types of larp. We also discuss how to incorporate role-playing into our everyday lives. Those attractions were Wizard Quest, a fantasy-themed scavenger hunt and House on the Rock, which Anne describes as a "skyscraper hobbit-hole of kitsch." We learn about their background in indie filmmaking and how it has influenced their escape room design process. As part of his design philosophy, Chris says that anywhere in one of their escape rooms, “it should feel like a picturesque, lived-in space, and either tell part of the story, inform part of the puzzle, or be weird, or be funny. It HAS to do one of those things." They talk to us about the pros and cons of operating in a smaller community. We find out why they decided to release their remote game Lost Temple as a print-and-play. David and Peih-Gee gush over Solve Our Shirts, their latest project, which is an escape room in a t-shirt. It’s New Year’s Eve, and Max and Corn-Row Corinne welcome two-time castaway Peih-Gee Law to the show for a little champagne and a lot of Survivor gossip. Topics of discussion include which Gen Xer big timed Peih-Gee at a finale week party; the one must-have item from the Mike Skupin legal defense fund charity auction; Adam Klein’s hula hoop video; and Brandon Hantz’s new face tattoos. Max and Peih-Gee reminisce about the Second Chance campaign and vote reveal. Corinne updates us on Electronic Skateboard Guy and her redheaded Cabbage Patch Doll Rusty. Peih-Gee asks Max and Corinne to explain what it means to be Jewish and talks about what it is like to be an Asian woman on Survivor.

This week we interviewed Peih-Gee Law. She left the game in episode 3 of Survivor Cambodia. Peih-Gee's luck went from bad to worse. She was unfortunate enough to start on a tribe with Abi-Maria which triggered conflict right out of the gate. She took a turn for the worse when she was shuffled onto a tribe with no resources, her primary alliance fell apart, was still stuck with Abi, and eventually became her second victim. Listen to this interview to hear behind the scenes details at Angkor beach, more about Varner's meltdown at the challenge, what she wishes had been shown and more! It's been 6 days! Erin and Parv also talk to Shirin about being the second fallen castaway. Did she play too fast too soon? Does she wish she handled the Abi situation differently?   They are classic Survivor sins: overconfidence which leads to a false sense of comfort. Anytime a castaway becomes convinced that they are "calling the shots", safe and in control, you can almost guarantee that they are not long for the game. The editors are really emphasizing the "no change equals no chance" theme. Shirin and Spencer both get called out for making the same mistakes as their first season and they are immediately on the chopping block. Likewise with Stephen Fishbach. They have all been portrayed as cold hearted gamebots that haven't adapted and thus are at risk to leave the game early. Will the shuffle help or hurt Fishbach and Spencer? How did you feel about Shirin's lack of support for Abi? Was Abi right to take some gleeful revenge? Were you surprised by Woo's response to Shirin and Spencer's pleas? How did you view Savage's speech about his wife? What did you think of his description of Fishbach? Who would you have kept: Shirin or Spencer? How do you think the shuffle to 3 tribes will impact the game? Who do you think will be next to go? Here are the tribes after episodes 2.   Survivor season 31, Cambodia: Second Chance, is off to an exciting start! They managed to squeeze in a little something from all 20 castaways. It was encouraging to see no one got the classic "Purple Kelly" quiet treatment. Some are playing smart, a select few, not so much having fallen back into old habits. We even got two big surprises: "immediate" Tribal Council and our first blindside. How did your assessments of the new castaways change once you saw them in action? What did you think about the placement of the HII in the challenge? Who do you think is in control of each tribe? Who would you have kept: Abi or Vytas? Who do you think will be next to go? Oh, we get it. Todd was never at risk in this episode. Those "Next on Survivor" clues from last week were just a misdirect like when they hinted that James was at risk. No, wait, that really did happen. How does this work again? Ok, you gotta sound off on this one. Did Todd give us a Johnny Fairplay moment, or was that story about his sister true? Will the ladies rally and give us an all female final 4? PG is definitely a scrapper. Do you think she could win it all if she makes it to final 3? Do you find yourself rooting for the underdog even a little bit? Here's the merged tribe after episode 11. Hae Da Fung: Amanda, Courtney, Denise, Peih-Gee, and Todd Jo Ann's back to thinking PG will go next. Those diabolically clever editors did it again. With all the promo talk and hints about someone being blindsided, we figured it was just too obvious that James would be the target. It just had to be someone else. Next, they'll trick us into eating our vegatables too. How does someone have TWO immunity idols and never play one? Did you watch James' final words video? Do you think he just got tired and quit? Was it wise of Amanda to finally show her hand and take control of the alliance to initiate the removal of James? Would it have been better for her to plant the seed with Todd and let him do the dirty work? What about Erik and PG? Will they make it to the final 3? Here's the new merged tribe after episode 10. Hae Da Fung: Amanda, Courtney, Denise, Erik, Peih-Gee, and Todd Jo Ann is convinced that the "fourth time is the charm" and PG will finally be voted out in episode 11. Last week Courtney helped rid us of JR, and this week she indirectly helped show Frosti the door too. Denise evidently wasn't mad enough to turn the tables on the power trio. Episode 4 offers up another classic Survivor dilema. Who do you value more: a workhorse in camp or someone that helps you win challenges? Dave's erratic behavior and caustic leadership style finally led to his downfall. We got to see a new side of Sherea too. Fei Long resumes their winning streak, and Todd is quite possibly the luckiest person to ever play the game. Why do you think Fei Long chose to kidnap Dave? What do you think of Jean Robert now? Do you think his tribemates are really buying into his come from behind strategy? Wow, episode 3 of Survivor China was packed with even more twists, turns and surprises than last week! Daffy Dave continued to berate his tribemates with wacky outbursts, developed a new compulsion to clean things in his outdoor surroundings, and decided to compete in the reward challenge by stripping down to his birthday suit. Amazingly, Zhan Hu easily won both challenges. Ok, so no one was surprised to find out that Courtney was worthless in a physical challenge. Leslie, the Christian Radio Host, turns out to be the least trusted person in the game. Who do you think is really pulling the strings in Fei Long? Could Jean Robert emerge as the "puppet master" of the tribe in spite of his apparent lack of a social game? How do you think the two tribes compare now? Here's the tribes after episode 3. Survivor's back, and they're already kicking the drama and action into high gear with episode 2. In a bit of an uncommon twist, both tribes seem to really want and need leaders. Ashley's choice to continually go after Dave led to her downfall. When is it ok or safe to challenge the leader of the tribe? What do you think about JR's "lazy man" strategy? For Leslie, there's no question. It truly is better to give than to receive. Do you think she chose well? What will happen when someone else in her tribe gets a clue and tells everyone else how it works? What do you think about how the challenges are shaping up? Here's the tribes after episode 2. Welcome back Survivor Fans! One of the cardinal rules of Survivor is, "Don't isolate yourself." It's interesting to contrast how James and Chicken handled the early stage of the game. James, a self professed loner, accepted and bonded with Leslie and got tips for how to better fit into the tribe. Chicken took every opportunity to point out what he thought his tribemates were doing wrong and consistently chose to physically stand apart from them. While he was busy complaining about how they couldn't work together, five of his tribemates banded together to decide he didn't deserve to keep playing. We're in the 15th season now and we still see people who show up to play and not realize it's primarily a social game. Do you think Peih-Gee will be able to keep it together to lead her team to victory? Will Dave and Peih-Gee fight over who's really the leader? What happened to Zhan Hu at the end of the challenge? Do you think anyone in Zhan Hu really thinks that Dave is being sincere? What did Jean-Robert gain from accusing Todd of being devious and clever? Here's the tribes after episode 1. Fei Long: Aaron, Amanda, Courtney, Denise, James, Jean-Robert, Leslie, Todd Zhan Hu: Ashley, Dave, Eric, Frosti, Jaime, Peih-Gee, Sherea We both think that Zhan Hu will lose the next immunity challenge too.
