POPULARITY
Friday has arrived, and the gang is doing everything possible to safely land this week without accidentally starting an international incident. On this episode, the crew kicks things off with air show excitement taking over St. Louis. Between Blue Angels screaming across the sky, traffic nightmares in Chesterfield Valley, food truck plans, soccer matches, and Moon somehow scheduling approximately 47 events in a single Saturday, the weekend is already off to a chaotic start. The team also swaps stories about hidden local gems, parks they've somehow ignored for years, and the eternal struggle of trying to get anywhere during a major regional event. Then the conversation takes a serious turn as the crew discusses the heartbreaking situation involving Steve Ewing, his wife Beth, and the tragic loss of their dog after an attack in Tower Grove Park. The gang shares thoughts on responsible pet ownership, leash laws, dog training, accountability, and the kind of people who make terrible situations even worse by running away from them. It's an emotional discussion that highlights how quickly an ordinary day can become unforgettable.Of course, because this is a daily comedy show, the conversation eventually veers into parenting dilemmas and one question that immediately divides the room: what's worse—finding out your child is being bullied or finding out your child is the bully? That launches a flood of personal stories, old-school parenting advice, schoolyard fight memories, gym teachers who looked the other way, and lessons learned from growing up in a world where conflict usually worked itself out one way or another. The crew also tackles a surprisingly passionate debate about things that were ruined once too many people discovered them. Food trucks. Craft beer. Airbnb. Festivals. Etsy. Secret parking spots. National parks. Podcasts. Nothing is safe. If you've ever loved something before it became wildly popular and slightly unbearable, you'll probably find yourself nodding along while simultaneously realizing you might be part of the problem. And then comes the story that feels like it was specifically designed for the internet. An Olive Garden server receives a massive $700 tip, management gets involved, fraud reviews begin, accusations start flying, Facebook explodes, and suddenly nobody knows who to believe. The gang breaks down every confusing twist in the story and tries to figure out whether somebody got cheated, somebody got scammed, or everybody involved simply communicated terribly.Along the way you'll hear tales of childhood heroes, local legends, travel headaches, restaurant pet peeves, and the type of random conversations that somehow only make sense when heard together. That's what happens when a group of friends sits down with microphones and starts following every ridiculous tangent to its natural conclusion.Whether you're here for weird news, heartfelt moments, sarcastic commentary, or stories that spiral completely out of control, this daily comedy show delivers a little bit of everything. By the end, you'll laugh, shake your head, question humanity, and maybe double-check the tip amount before signing your next restaurant receipt. If you're looking for a daily comedy show packed with St. Louis stories, bizarre headlines, unexpected detours, and the kind of conversations that feel like hanging out with friends who absolutely should know better, Episode 42 has you covered.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

From there, things get appropriately ridiculous. In music news, Ace Frehley's legendary 1975 Gibson Les Paul sells for over half a million dollars, proving that Kiss fans remain one of the most dedicated—and financially dangerous—fan bases on Earth. The crew dives into the legacy of the iconic guitar, the musicians inspired by it, and why certain pieces of rock history carry a price tag bigger than most houses. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, where former guitarist Josh Klinghoffer says his era with the band has basically been erased from history. The gang debates forgotten albums, band politics, and why some musicians act like entire chapters of their careers never happened.Elsewhere, Madonna surprises fans with a pop-up Pride performance in Times Square, Ted Danson opens up once again about one of the most controversial moments of his career, and Bret Michaels' daughter shares stories about growing up backstage at Poison concerts that absolutely sound like they came from another planet.Movie fans get fed as the crew breaks down reviews for the new Masters of the Universe film, debates whether nostalgia can carry a franchise forever, and discusses famous movie mistakes that accidentally became iconic scenes. Plus, Nightcrawler gets some love, The Birdcage remains a classic, and everyone learns that sometimes the best moments in cinema happen when things go completely off the rails. The crew discovers what modern audiences consider "dad rock," and let's just say nobody was emotionally prepared to hear Blink-182, Linkin Park, Korn, Creed, and Fall Out Boy thrown into the same category as classic rock legends. Time comes for us all.The gang dives headfirst into one of the most ridiculous E-Memoriums we've had in a while, featuring cheese addiction, public stupidity, psychedelic suburban dads, shattered aviation dreams, and one of the most unexpectedly wholesome surprises we've ever pulled off.Rafe kicks things off by documenting his descent into dairy madness after being forced onto a 90-day elimination diet. What started as a simple food sensitivity test has turned into a full-blown cheese withdrawal situation. We're talking Gouda cravings, cheddar desperation, and behavior that would get you escorted directly out of a Target. If you've ever loved cheese enough to question your life choices, you'll feel seen.Meanwhile, Rizz discovers there's now a Lost Boys musical on Broadway. That's right. Somewhere, a vampire is singing show tunes and Gen X dads everywhere are suddenly considering season tickets. The crew debates Broadway shows, Book of Mormon, and whether Lost Boys might be the gateway drug that finally gets middle-aged rock fans into theater. Then comes one of the week's strangest news stories as the gang revisits the infamous Hooters incident involving a customer who somehow managed to turn a chicken wing restaurant into the site of a criminal investigation. It leads to a conversation that proves common sense may officially be extinct. The laughs keep coming when Rizz recounts his Primus concert experience. What should have been a nostalgic night of music instead became a fascinating study of what happens when suburban dads try to reconnect with their youth through psychedelics while simultaneously worrying about mortgages, roofing contractors, colonoscopies, and elevated heart rates. It's less Woodstock and more West County Wellness Check. After learning he lost his chance to fly with the Blue Angels, Moon was genuinely crushed. What follows is one of the coolest surprises we've ever pulled off. With help from an incredible listener, a Blue Angels-themed Corvette Stingray appears outside the station, giving Moon the next best thing to taking flight. What starts as a joke quickly becomes a heartfelt moment involving family memories, aviation dreams, and enough horsepower to temporarily heal a broken heart.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.Man arrested for smashing bar window in south St. LouisOlive Garden Faces Backlash After Server Says $700 Tip Led to FiringAce Frehley's main Kiss guitar, the 1975 “Budokan” Gibson Les Paul, sells for over half a million dollars at auctionRam Made An AI-Generated Shirt With A Tacoma On ItVolunteer firefighter arrested for setting blazes and responding to them with his own department during 30-hour arson spreeNew York robber on the run after stealing just $605 from six banks across cityMan allegedly had 11-year-old hold flashlight during burglaryCedar Point bans guest from all Six Flags parks for life after video shows him eating chicken nuggets while riding Millennium Force roller coasterHere's why a Newark flight to Spain had to turn around over the Atlantic68-year-old woman arrested for calling 911 over Jell-O shot denial at Ocala barMan accidentally shoots himself in groin while shopping at Florida WalmartSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The gang welcomes Ashley Vogt and NHL veteran Jamie Rivers into the studio to celebrate two massive life events: a surprise Nashville engagement and the launch of Synergy Integrated Healthcare. But before anyone can get sentimental, the show immediately derails into a debate about throwing apple cores out of moving vehicles and whether that technically makes you a criminal. Spoiler alert: Missouri law apparently has thoughts.Meanwhile, Moon relives the heartbreak of being passed over for a coveted Blue Angels flight after thinking he was officially cleared for takeoff. The crew spends an alarming amount of time trying to figure out who could possibly be worthy of stealing his seat. Steve Ewing? John Goodman? Wayne Gretzky? Andy Cohen? The investigation continues. As if that wasn't enough, the crew checks in on the internet-famous guy attempting to live in a room for an entire year while livestreaming the experience. He's lost weight, picked up hobbies, and somehow still has fewer viewers than some houseplants on social media. The discussion quickly turns into a philosophical debate about personal sacrifice, family life, and whether staying locked in a room sounds like punishment or a vacation. Then comes Alpha-Gal Syndrome, the tick-borne condition that could potentially rob meat lovers of everything they hold dear. Lern takes a suspicious amount of joy in imagining a future where Riz can't eat meatballs in Europe, while the rest of the room tries desperately not to anger the tick gods.Elsewhere in the chaos:A movie theater guest commits the unthinkable by removing their shoes during a screening.Twizzlers become accidental footwear accessories.Ashley reveals the incredible multi-layered deception behind her Nashville proposal.Jamie explains why acupuncture works wonders despite his refusal to bother Ashley with every ache and pain. The crew discusses regenerative medicine, healthcare innovations, and how a grand opening somehow ends with another reminder not to throw food out your car window. It's everything you'd expect from a funny podcast: weird stories, unnecessary arguments, heartfelt moments, and just enough public embarrassment to keep everyone humble.Whether you're here for the engagement story, the Blue Angels drama, movie theater etiquette, Alpha-Gal panic, or simply to hear grown adults debate the ecological impact of a Granny Smith apple, this funny podcast delivers exactly the kind of daily chaos you've come to expect. And if you're wondering whether Jamie ever stopped throwing apple cores out the window... absolutely not. At least not voluntarily. This funny podcast may not improve your life, but it will make you feel significantly better about your own decision-making skills.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShowHear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Moon is finally back from Europe... barely. After rocking massive Goldfinger shows in England, Moon thought he was headed home with some great vacation stories. Instead, he found himself trapped in a German airport nightmare involving missed connections, endless lines, angry travelers, confused airline employees, and enough frustration to test the patience of a saint. If you've ever been stranded while traveling, you'll feel every second of this story.Of course, this being The Rizzuto Show, we can't simply discuss international travel like normal adults. Before Moon can even finish explaining how he got stuck in Frankfurt, the conversation somehow derails into an in-depth investigation of nose hair trimming technology. Which trimmer works best? Which one is lying to you? Can any of them actually reach the mysterious "front cave" region of your nostrils? Important questions are asked. Very few are answered.Moon also shares stories from London, Paris, the European heat wave, questionable airport experiences, and the realization that saving money on flights sometimes costs your sanity. Along the way, the gang debates the worst possible movies to watch while flying on a German airline, and somehow turns Saving Private Ryan into an accidental international incident.Meanwhile, back in St. Louis, the crew talks about the vandalism at Steve's Hot Dogs and why supporting local businesses matters when they're already battling construction, rising costs, and random acts of destruction. The conversation then drifts into National Hot Dog Day planning because apparently that's how professional broadcasters handle serious topics. And just when you think things couldn't get any weirder...A Maryland Heights Hooters becomes the setting for one of the most bizarre crime stories imaginable. Let's just say one customer took "dining in" a little too literally. The crew breaks down the unbelievable details and wonders how someone ends up making that series of life decisions. Also in this episode:Moon's European vacation recapThe great nose hair trimmer debateGerman airport survival tacticsTravel horror storiesSt. Louis hot dog newsGas price hunting strategiesForest Park getting national recognitionStrange airline movie choicesHooters headlines nobody asked forThe usual daily chaos from Rizz and the gangIf you enjoy sarcastic humor, ridiculous travel disasters, bizarre news stories, and a group of friends getting distracted every five seconds, this episode delivers exactly what you'd expect from your favorite daily comedy show. Thanks for making The Rizzuto Show part of your day. Whether you're listening at work, in traffic, or while aggressively researching nose hair trimmers, we're glad you're here. The daily comedy show continues with another episode full of travel fails, unexpected detours, weird news, and the kind of conversations that probably shouldn't happen on a morning radio show.Moon got rejected by the Blue Angels. That's right. After years of dreaming about flying with the legendary flight team, filling out paperwork, getting medical forms completed, and generally doing everything he was supposed to do (allegedly), the Navy said, "Nah." The crew spends way too much time trying to figure out who got the spot instead, throwing out names ranging from Cardinals legends to local celebrities and basically anybody who isn't Moon. Then things somehow get even weirder. The gang debates one of the most ridiculous music questions ever created: if you could only listen to one genre for an entire year, would you choose mumble rap, post-9/11 patriotic country, Christian death metal, or AI-generated EDM? The answers reveal way more about everyone's personalities than anyone intended, and somehow Christian death metal becomes the surprise hero of the conversation. In Crap On Celebrities, the celebrity chaos is firing on all cylinders. Diddy drama takes another bizarre turn, Sabrina Carpenter gets a restraining order against an alleged stalker who apparently thought hiding in a Prius was a good plan, Taylor Swift fans once again convince themselves they're decoding secret messages from the universe, and The Black Crowes find themselves at the center of a USA chant controversy. The crew also dives into the latest music news, including Mick Jagger somehow still having more energy than people half his age, a Gene Wilder biopic that already has everyone fan-casting, and the ongoing debate about whether Val Kilmer was a misunderstood genius or simply impossible to work with. Then comes the emotional destruction.A list of the most heartbreaking animal moments in movie history sends everyone spiraling. From Artax sinking into the Swamp of Sadness in The NeverEnding Story, to Mufasa's death in The Lion King, to Homeward Bound, Fox and the Hound, I Am Legend, and more childhood trauma than any morning radio show should legally be allowed to revisit before noon. If you've ever cried because of a fictional animal, prepare to relive every painful second. It's another completely normal day with The Rizzuto Show, which means absolutely nothing is normal. Disney, Trivia Contests, Escape Rooms, Stephen Sondheim, Crosswords, and Puzzles Eagerly awaiting the next season of Reality Escape Pod? Great news! Season 11 is just around the corner. While you wait, enjoy a special compilation from Season 10. Our editor Steve Ewing, has chosen a memorable clip from every episode. It's the ideal way for new listeners to get acquainted with the podcast, and the perfect trip down memory lane for our devoted fans. This season featured a variety of talented creators, escape room owners, designers, game makers, and even a live audio escape room that first debuted at RECON Remote in 2025. One of our dream guests launched the season: Puzzlemaster Will Shortz. This episode was filled with fascinating stories about his time working at Games Magazine and his early years editing the puzzle section for the New York Times. Other veteran creatives this season included Jim “The Oz” Olivia, who helps run the World's Largest Trivia Contest, and Doris Hardoon whose years as an Imagineer at Disney yielded many insights for us into what it took to create “the happiest place on earth” at EPCOT and later at Shanghai Disney Resort. We uncovered the parlor game and puzzle obsessions of Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim with author Barry Joseph, who has published an in-depth look at a little-examined facet of Sondheim's genius. Adam Bellow detailed the process of developing escape room-inspired educational kits for classrooms all over the world through the work of his company, Breakout EDU. Of course, we had many standout escape room owners share their trials, tribulations, and moments of triumph. Will & Kim Rutherford, owners of Escape Artist Greenville, Stephen & Stevie Kristof of 60 to Escape in the Chicago area, and Jonathan Driscoll & Sacha St. Dennis of Escaparium in Montreal, where RECON will be held in August of 2026. Zach Sherwin will be at RECON Montreal, running his hilarious act The Crossword Show. He joined David & Peih-Gee to chat about its development, and what it's like to be a comedy rap star on YouTube! And we caught up with Rita Orlov & Lauren Bello of PostCurious to learn about their latest collaboration in the world of boxed puzzle games. As always, we featured a couple episodes that were pure fun. Yannick Trapman-O'Brien & Lyra Levin played Mark Larson's audio escape room: BLOT. On our Holiday Special, REA team members Theresa Piazza and Andrew Reynolds tested their mettle against Peih-Gee's Playhouse word puzzles. Finally, we received the yearly industry report from RoomEscapeArtist.com Editor-In-Chief Lisa Spira. She walked us through her data analysis concerning escape rooms in 2025, including trends in booking times, revenue, and the growth of challenge arcades. Rock music has its roots in Black culture and with his docuseries “They Called Me a Sellout: Being Black in the ‘White' Rock & Roll Industry”, Chan Maurice Evans explores that history. The series features St. Louis legends like Bernie and Uvee Hayes, Steve Ewing, and rock icons like Ben Kenny of Incubus. The series centers Black artists in the rock genre and their experiences. Evans joins St. Louis on the Air to discuss how, after years of being called a “sellout” for being a Black rock artist, he made it his mission to show Black people that rock is rooted in Black culture.

Why doesn't St. Louis have its own hot dog, like the iconic Chicago dog? That question was on restauranter Steve Ewing's mind when he created a March-madness style bracket and asked St. Louisans to choose the hot dog that best represented their city. Then, in 2022, the Board of Aldermen declared the competition's winner the Official Hot Dog of St. Louis. In this encore presentation, Ewing shares how to make a St. Louis hot dog and the inspiration behind its ingredients.
Back in the late '90s, when I was diving headfirst into the world of playing in bands, I was like a sponge—soaking up every bit of inspiration from the best of the best. One of the biggest influences on me when it came to stage presence and connecting with an audience was someone I now have the privilege of calling a friend: Steve Ewing of The Urge This is Steve's second time on the show—and I can't wait to share this latest episode with all of you. Even more pumped to see The Urge live again on July 12 in Omaha. You do not want to miss it!

Steve's Hot Dogs is a St. Louis classic. They had a massive year in 2024, opening new locations and serving up their popular hot dogs at St. Louis sporting events and festivals. But when we first talked to founder Steve Ewing on this podcast back in 2018, he was hanging up his hot dog hat, prepared to shut his doors for good. But the community said no way, and after bringing in new partners, the restaurant has seen major success and growth. And to think it all started with a hot dog stand outside a concert venue. We sat down with Steve to talk about how his career as the lead singer for The Urge spurred his second act as a restauranteur. With locations on South Grand, Delmar and now The District in Chesterfield, it's easier than ever to find St. Louis' official hot dog.

"Why is there blacklight from the killer helping me?" We groggily wake up in a dingy bathroom. It's creepy and dark with an ominous sense of dread. Our kidnapper comes on the screen and explains what will happen to us. "I am also an escape room enthusiast and a horror fanatic. Therefore, I built a horror themed escape room. You are about to experience my masterpiece." While these words are uttered by an actor playing the part of a psycho killer, the sentiment is straight from the heart of creator Christine Barger-Lutes. After reviewing escape rooms and haunts for almost a decade, blogger and influencer Christine finally opened up her very own escape room with husband and partner Jeremiah Lutes. 13th Basement is both a parody and homage to horror escape rooms. Christine joins us on the Spoilers Club to talk all about 13th Basement, including designs borne out of frustrations and her own pet peeves with escape rooms. While discussing a key that falls with a purposefully loud clang onto a metal tray, David notes , "Christine was reviewing escape rooms for a long time before making this. She knows that one of the most annoying things to happen in the escape room is: a cool thing happens, you earned something, and no one knows it happened." I really enjoyed hearing Christine talk about her design decisions, especially when it comes to making sure her room is accessible. We dissect all these influences and more in this month's Spoilers Club of 13th Basement. There's a reason Los Angeles is known as the City of Dreams. It's a town populated with dreamers and makers. They concoct fantasy worlds filled with quirky characters, dashing heroes, and tormented villains. Oftentimes, the backdrop of Southern California serves as inspiration itself, with its wide sandy beaches, snowy mountaintops, and the desolate wilds of the Mojave desert. In honor of RECON Los Angeles, Season 7 of REPOD is filled with creative luminaries all hailing from Southern California. We curated a select cross-section of the different types of immersive games you'll find locally, and there is an impressive variety of experiences. They range from escape rooms and magic shows to networking games, large scale festivals, and theme parks. There's even an escape room in a vacation home where the Joshua Tree landscape itself is part of the set. Our editor, Steve Ewing, put together some memorable clips from each episode of Season 7. It's perfect for new listeners of this podcast or fans who want to relive their favorite moments. I hope this episode inspires you to visit my hometown of SoCal, and if you're coming for RECON Los Angeles in August, make sure to check out these featured experiences. On this week's episode presented by Busey Bank, Josh has the chance to sit with Danni Eickenhorst and Steve Ewing of HuSTL Hospitality – the group behind both Steve's Hot Dogs and the Fountain on Locust. Danni (and her husband Marcus) got involved with Steve in February 2020 when he originally announced the closing of Steve's Hot Dogs. They spent some time talking through how together they re-imagined the concept, worked through those changes throughout the pandemic and have grown the brand to now include not only the flagship location on South Grand, but satellites at Citypark, Enterprise Center and America's Center. Additionally, HuSTL will be very shortly opening an additional Steve's Hot Dogs and The Fountain off Locust – a spinoff of The Fountain on Locust – this summer at Maker's Locale, a new event and dining complex located in the Delmar Maker District. Josh and Danni and Steve get into a lot. Scale, growth, leadership, vision and even a little bodybuilding. Fun to talk to folks moving quickly. Let's go…

"Where Terry and I live is between games and theater." If you ask any escape room enthusiast to recommend a must-play game in Los Angeles, you'll hear about Lab Rat. When it first opened in 2018, it was ranked #8 in the world on the TERPECA list. It has maintained a ranking in the top 100 games ever since, which is no small feat. Hatch Escapes' highly anticipated new game, The Ladder, has wowed the escape room community with its unique, replayable mechanics and branching narrative. Terry Pettigrew-Rolapp and Tommy Wallach, the creative minds behind (and owners of) Hatch Escapes, join us for a deep dive into escape room storytelling. They spend a remarkable about of time thinking about how to craft stories with interludes – a skill they developed while writing musical theater. They approach escape rooms from a writer's perspective, with an eye towards unique interactions, but always with storytelling at the heart of the experience. "When we played our first escape room, we realized immediately: oh, this is a medium that captures, in some ways, the best of both worlds.” Terry and Tommy are constantly iterating on escape rooms as a medium for narrative. I especially enjoyed hearing their analysis of what makes for good storytelling, and the details of how they advance plot and characters in their work. They muse on including plot twists or moments where the stakes change. Terry and Tommy are truly excited about the future of escape rooms as a medium and the ways in which it can evolve, and that excitement is contagious. If you enjoyed this episode, don't miss their talk at RECON LA titled: The Hatch Escapes Championship Title Bout: “Tell Better Stories vs. Stop Telling Stories” A debate between Terry Pettigrew-Rolapp and Tommy Wallach in which the ultimate fate of the medium shall at last be determined. “I have irrational exuberance about the future of immersive.” Whether you work in the immersive theater space, or have more than a passing interest in the immersive arts, chances are you've seen Noah Nelson at an immersive event, or listened to his coverage of it on the No Proscenium podcast. Or maybe you've read about it on their weekly newsletter. Whether it's reviews of immersive theater shows, thought pieces on the term “immersive” or articles on how to break into the immersive industry, No Proscenium has it covered. After attending Sleep No More and Then She Fell, Noah he came out of these experiences with his mind on fire. He started compiling a list of upcoming immersive shows to share with his friends, which eventually became the No Proscenium website, an incredible resource for all things immersive. On the podcast, Noah shares insights from his decades long coverage of immersive, including how immersive theater and escape rooms can learn from each other. I especially appreciated hearing him talk about teaching immersive at the college level and hearing about the passion that his students have for the medium. “They're obsessed with the idea of telling stories this way. They want to figure out how to make a good immersive experience, right? It's not cynical at all. They believe in the power of the form. And that's what takes all of this from being a fad and becoming a medium and industry is that the love of the form is such that people pursue it at any cost.” If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to check out the No Proscenium Podcast. "I think being silly is really important." Playing pretend together is powerful stuff, and Andy Crocker knows this better than anyone. If you've experienced heartfelt shenanigans at Ghost Town Alive, or exchanged thrilling secrets in the engineering room aboard Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser, chances are you've come across Andy's work. As an Immersive Performance Director, Andy's work involves creating unscripted moments that gives the audience a chance to dig into their inner silliness. In addition to her work with Interactive Performance at theme park experiences, Andy is also one half of Mister and Mischief. They create what they call “fun-forward interactive experiences designed to delight audiences and turn strangers into pals.” Escape From Godot definitely fits the bill as a play that suddenly becomes an escape room. Their more recent 40 Watts from Nowhere turned the guests into pirate radio DJ's reliving the memories of Sue Carpenter, a kickass radio rebel. Andy takes the business of being silly very seriously. Her enthusiasm for spreading the joy of make-believe is palpable. She designs her experience to create a safe space for the audience to indulge in childlike joy. The power of make-believe is real, and no one believes in it more than Andy Crocker. If you want to see the magic for yourself, don't miss Andy's talk at RECON this August, and make sure to get tickets for Escape From Godot. “We always want to make something that we haven't seen before.” There are few companies who have been as influential in the escape room scene as Cross Roads Escape Games. Not only are all their games highly polished with brilliant puzzles, gorgeous sets, and fun interactions, they're also creatively experimental. The owners, Luke and Madison Rhoades, have made some of the most innovative and format-breaking escape rooms in the world from the iconic experience, The Hex Room, to their most recent masterpiece, The Weeping Witch. In this episode, we break down the brilliance behind their games and what makes them unique. At their core, Luke and Madison are creative dare devils. They look for ways to challenge the industry and add their own fun twist on what defines an escape room. Combined with their theatrical backgrounds and business acumen, this experimental nature is what defines Cross Roads Escape Games and makes them such an iconic company in the escape room scene. "There's absolutely no difference between Magic and the Magical." We shuffle slowly into the basement, careful not to bump into anything. This is harder than seems, because everywhere we turn, there are boxes and objects. Collections of items are spotlit, dust motes dancing in the air. Curious, we split up and start exploring. In one hidden nook, there's a display of antique brass locks, and in another, a strange set of wine bottles. Over in the corner, there is a sculpture of a Van Gogh head, which hides pontifications on commercialized art on the back. This basement belongs to Michael Borys, and was our first introduction to the man behind The 49 Boxes. Michael is not only an innovative game designer with a storied career, he is also a magician and a writer. His magical experience, The 49 Boxes, blurs the lines between puzzle hunt, magic show, and interactive theater. We also explore Michael's other work, including The Arkham Files, an exciting new type of tabletop game that makes use of AR technology. Michael cares deeply about creating a magical experience for players. Whether it's through magic shows, tabletop games, or his experience The 49 Boxes, Michael's games aim to transport the player and make them the hero. We are thrilled to bring his unique experience to RECON Los Angeles. "A delightful dream world" Imagine walking up to the lobby of an escape room, only to be confronted by an enormous semi-truck that has smashed through one of the walls. Maybe you're climbing up a massive, sprawling tree and ducking into the treehouse of your childhood dreams. Local favorite Confusion Escapes engineer all their games to maximize fun, which made a lot of sense once we discovered that owner Al Delcome has a background in mechanical engineering. His wife and business partner Stacey Delcome is the one responsible for the gorgeous set decor. The duo honed their talents on haunts. They created incredibly elaborate home haunts, complete with stunt work and elevator simulators. One of the things I appreciated most after our conversation was their emphasis on safety. Al and Stacey are meticulous in their build approach. They ensure that every build is structurally sound and that every surface is finely sanded to prevent splinters and snags. It's always a pleasure to chat with owners who are passionate and ambitious in their creations. “The most Myst-like experience I have had in real life” You arrive at the Airbnb, ready for a fun-filled weekend with your loved ones. The ranch is gorgeously furnished with mid-century modern touches. Outside, the desert stretches off into the distance. You wander in after a soak in the hot tub and find a little piece of paper that says "Start Here." Before long, you're uncovering secrets about Grandpa Ray and going on adventures out into the desert. And what is hidden behind those locked doors in the courtyard? Blake Hodges-Koch and Thomas Meston have created magic in Joshua Tree – an escape room-esque immersive experience packaged in an Airbnb. By discovering secrets and solving hidden puzzles in a place you're calling home, the story starts to come alive and the characters become real. Delightful little touches like the custom soundtrack that plays throughout the property add to the experience. Time spent in an experience truly aids immersion, and nothing quite beats living in it for the weekend. Blake and Thomas put a lot of love and effort into crafting a home that's comfortable, appealing, and with plenty of mysteries to discover. It was especially fun to hear how appreciative they are of the escape room community embracing of their project. As David puts it, even after playing a thousand escape rooms, Wild Heart Ranch still managed to surprise and delight him. "Our love language is building together." “High on fun” is how David introduces the games at Steal and Esape, and that's exactly how I felt after playing their creative and unique games. From popsicles to hilarious assessment tests, and challenges that gave me Survivor PTSD, the games created by husband-and-wife team Jason and Marketa Richard are maximizing the fun factor. Steal and Escape is an escape room company that pulls out all the stops. Indeed, Jason told us he thought The Missing Season might be the last game he'd design. That's why he threw in all the toys and tricks that he'd always wanted to see in an escape room. You can feel when designers of a game are truly passionate about their craft. And I'm not just saying this because I found an article written by David pinned to the wall of their gamemaster office. But it told me that these owners truly care about the player experience. You can clearly see that they design from the heart. Your palms are sweaty, but your body is filled with exhilaration. You're still coming down off the high of pitching your ludicrous idea on stage to a room filled with your peers. Thunderous applause, whistles, and exuberant cheers fill your ears. You walk off, clutching your squashed penny prize. An hour ago, you walked in, nervous as hell, with no idea what to expect. Now you're leaving with new friends and the satisfaction of exercising your creative muscles. That's the magic of Imagi-Ne'er-Do-Wells, the brainchild of themed experience designer Brett Jackson. Brett created this event as a creative social club, where guests formulate ridiculous attractions following some hilarious prompts. Not only does it get the creative juices flowing, it also fosters networking opportunities. I especially enjoyed hearing about all the design elements he's deliberately built into the event. Brett designs with fun, humor, and the safety of his guests as a priority. I hope this episode inspires you to become an Imagi-Ne'er-Do-Well. "The desert adds an incredible layer of realism that you're never gonna get in any polished one hour experience." You've been driving through the desert for miles. It's nighttime, and you've seen nothing but scrub brush and rocks for a while. Suddenly, emerging from the darkness is the glimmer of lights… neon lights, and as you get closer you hear the thunderous pounding of music. People in funky lit-up outfits are running around in this vibrant neon construction. You sigh as you settle into this post-apocalyptic city that you will call home for the next 5 days. It's difficult to convey the scope of a fully immersive event that spans 5 days and is chock full of missions, tribal allegiances, subcultures, music, and mayhem. Wasteland Weekend and Neotropolis are multi-day, larp-esque, dystopian-themed immersive festivals taking place in the barren wasteland of the Mojave Desert in California. Jared Butler is the mastermind behind these events. He joins us to break down how it all works. It was fascinating to hear about the logistics of running such a complex event. However, what struck me most during this interview was not the commitment to immersion, which is enforced by required in-world costumes, nor the scope, which includes missions, art pieces, performances, and a cohesive narrative. Rather, I was really impressed with the dedication to creating an open and welcoming community. Jared's insistence on keeping his events an inviting and collaborative place to play is apparent, and I could feel how it trickles down through the culture of these events. Wasteland Weekend and Neotropolis are can't-miss experiences if you're looking to delve deeper into immersive play. "Quirkiness is a core value." In Season 7, Episode 1, we chat with Adam Moody, Jonathan Berk, and Benjamin Berk, the creators of The Ministry of Peculiarities in Azusa, California. Their first full-length game, Hope End, established their quirky brand of escape room, elegantly mixing story, puzzles, and adventure into one of Southern California's preeminent experiences. One of the reasons this company is so beloved is their commitment to immersion. In the podcast, they talk about how the storytelling begins the moment a guest clicks onto their website, and continues once they step foot into the lobby. There's a lot of off-beat humor woven into their experience. They've even got a few lobby “gags” and pranks, one of which David calls “obnoxiously compelling.” Hope End is the rare escape room that does a little bit of everything, and does it all extremely well. Whether it's the high production value found in their set design, props or video work, the intimate moments that stem from a great actor, or puzzles with a wow factor, The Ministry of Peculiarities has set an amazingly high bar for the escape room scene in Los Angeles. We loved getting a peek into the minds behind this unique blend of escape room and immersive theater. "Why did it have to be snakes?" "Since we started this podcast, I have been talking repeatedly about my desire for there to be more lower budget, experimental, thought provoking, and thoughtful productions." David calls this game "the black box theatre" of escape rooms, while REA Patron Dan Egnor called it "the best room in the world in awesomeness per square foot." You've probably never played this room, or even heard about it, but David and I love this room so much that we dedicated 90 minutes to thoroughly dissecting and reliving The Ghost of Mentryville. Creator Matt Tye of Arcane Escape Room in Newhall, CA joins us to share his design and thought process behind this brilliant game. In this preview, Matt talks about how difficult it is to run this game, especially for the gamemaster, who is operating as a performer, gamemaster, and audio/ visual technician, all within the confines of a very small space.
