During this episode of A Richer Life, host Rich Weingart speaks with Alden Mills. San Francisco-based Alden Mills began taking control of his life at age twelve, when his doctor told him to learn chess because his asthma would keep him from playing sports. His first goal was to conquer the asthma, and he went on to achieve extraordinary things in sports, academics, military service, business, and philanthropy. For tools and resources to help you become unstoppable, visit alden-mills.com Episode Highlights: Alden recounts his childhood asthma diagnosis and how his parents helped him realize it didn't need to hold him back. Alden explains how the sport of rowing really unlocked a change of mindset for him. How does rowing lead to your recruitment in the Navy? How did the Navy lead you to becoming a Seal? What was the hardest moment that you had and what kept you from quitting? During hell week, after many, many members of his class quit, Alden was pulled aside and told he was a terrible leader. After leaving the Navy, Alden starts the company Perfect Fitness. What inspired you to start Perfect Fitness? As Alden was building his business, he reached a point where everyone was telling him to give it up, which he nearly did. Alden realized he should have started with innovation instead of invention. What led to you ultimately pivoting again and selling that company? Alden wanted to know how he could achieve a broader impact. He published his first book, Be Unstoppable, in November, 2013. Alden started working on becoming a “content entrepreneur.” Be Unstoppable is really a book about persistence. Alden explains the 8 essential actions to succeed in life. Alden discusses the role exercise plays in persistence and taking control of how you think, feel, and act. Rich transitions the conversation to ask Alden about parenting. Alden discusses the importance of letting children fail so they can learn from their failures. Why do people stay in the “harbor” of their lives and how can they break out? What does it mean to you to have a richer life and what are you doing today to live a richer life? Have the courage to push yourself out of your comfort zone and create a challenge for yourself. 3 Key Points: Surround yourself with a tribe. Stay curious in life and keep learning. It's only a failure if you don't learn anything. Tweetable Quotes: “The best way to thank a veteran is to go out there and serve somebody else.” -Alden Mills “The importance of having somebody else to believe in us cannot be understated enough.” -Alden Mills “I've still failed way more times than I've succeeded.” -Alden Mills “I'm no more extraordinary than the next person, I just have the willingness to keep going.” -Alden Mills “There is no greater lesson than learning from failure.” -Alden Mills “You're not failing unless you're not learning from it.” -Alden Mills Resources Mentioned: Alden Mills: Website | Instagram | Twitter

Most people work out all wrong! They get in their car, and drive to a gym to exercise. Or, if they have wised up over time- they skip all of that, and have a home gym setup at home, in their garage or basement. That is fine, and what I have done for many years; the idea of driving to a gym and working out is fine in high school or college, and is how I exercised throughout my early 20’s. It’s a good way to learn…Then, you work out on a regular schedule in your home gym. Weights in the basement, with a sturdy power rack are great. You can get big and strong in this manner, which is great in your youth! But as you age, what is the best way to stay fit?Well, I maintain that working out in your living room or TV room if you have one is ideal! Not only for you, but for your 4 year old grandson as well, and he can show you how:Approach your workout like pure play, for that is what it ideally is. All you really need is a space in front of the television, a yoga mat (to protect your carpet and cushion you a bit), a rebounder, and an Exergenie (ideally) for isometrics. I also recommend the Perfect Pushup, but get the pro or heavy duty model- high volume pushups will wear out a standard model quickly, while my heavy duty model has lasted more than a decade with no signs of wearing out! The other thing I like to have is an ab roller, which is a wonderful exercise, but this is optional- straight-legged setups are just as good- I just like to do both. When my 4 year old grandson is over, as he has been lately a lot, and we can’t go outside because it is so cold, I turn on the TV for him, and just observe. He sets down my rebounder, and starts- jumping! If the TV is on for an hour, he jumps the whole time! Sometimes, he may run into an adjacent room to get a toy to hold while jumping (Batman is a favorite), or to crouch down by his giant Batman cave toy, but he quickly resumes his jumping again. I notice that when the action is exciting- (fast cartoon chase scenes and the like)- he jumps much higher and faster! He gauges his intensity by how he feels at the moment in time, and this is the essence of intuitional training. His endurance is off the charts! I feel he should avoid strength training until he is at least 40 pounds or so…He doesn’t do it for health, or because he should. He just does it naturally, out of joyful movement that is part of our humanness. It feels good, and so he does it with gusto! We should do the same. Now that I am in my 60’s, I have no desire to be big. Strong is something else, something we should all aspire to improve, always! Maintenance of musculature is one of the most important aspects of health, lifelong- but especially as we age. So, isometrics are ideal, as they vastly increase strength, without huge additions of bulk! No, just lean, corded muscle (and tendon improvements as well), that shapes and is the engine of your body.I have a book I wrote a few years back that outlines my workouts, called Perfectly Paleo Exercise. The ebook version is better, and cheaper, but the gist is here- I do virtual resistance exercise first, (after turning on the TV of course), and flex my muscles throughout their entire range of motion. Here is my basic outline right here, on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DI65LRENdKoThis is the perfect core series of exercises for anyone, for all time! Years ago they were called Tiger Moves, which I think is king of hokey- I like Virtual Exercise better. But whatever- this type of weightless exercise, where the resi
Alden Mills, author of Unstoppable Teams and Be Unstoppable, a three time Navy SEAL platoon commander,, and a INC. 500 entrepreneur, shares why starting a company may be even harder than SEAL training, why corporate cultures are often flawed, and how the best leaders may fail more times than they succeed. Key Takeaways [3:12] Alden is the inventor of Perfect Pushup. While some may think that was his overnight success, it really took him 10 years. [4:08] Be Unstoppable was really a “Just In Case” letter for his four boys, and a first person account of how he learned persistence and leading yourself first to lead others. [6:09] The most powerful human emotion is the baseline of love. [6:55] After graduating from SEAL training, Alden chose to go into the SEAL delivery vehicle program and spent two tours on submarines. While confined in close quarters he started his invention sketchbook, and later took a couple of those ideas to market while in business school. [10:14] Being part of the SEAL team self discipline and focus, but it also meant coming up with new ways to do things and flexing the creativity muscle. [13:42] Great leaders maintain a balance of confidence and humility. They know it’s easy to stay humble when there is so much to learn and so many to learn from. [16:37] We each have the “whiner” and “whisperer” as voices in our head. We have a choice if we want to listen to them, or have the courage to go after what we really want. [20:36] SEAL teams have an X-Division, where they remove the quitters from the arena. As a civilian, you have to create your own X-Division so you are not surrounded by those with a quitting mentality. [23:04] Alden was told that due to his asthma he needed to live a less active lifestyle. His parents encouraged him to keep trying and eventually led him to try rowing. He ended up becoming a gold medalist in the Olympic Festival, and Captain of the freshman and varsity teams at the US Naval Academy. [29:17] To lead is to serve, and to serve is to care. The job of a leader is to build trust and inspire others to believe in themselves. They do this through building relationships and empathy, and in turn building trust. [31:06] A mother that inspires and encourages is a great example of a leader. [32:55] The magic sauce we are missing in today’s corporate world is creating a culture that takes care of its people. [36:06] Great leaders are vulnerable and open to asking for help where they need it. [38:02] Alden’s challenge: remember that imagination and determination are our two biggest limitations. Quotes “I think being a father is the pinnacle of leadership.” “Nobody cares how much you know, until you know how much they care.” - Teddy Roosevelt “You are never as good as you think you are.” “You need to have confidence. It’s the arrogance that kills you.” “Your choices determine your outcome.” Website | Twitter | Facebook| Instagram |Linkedin Perfect Pushup Leaders Eat Last Ishmael TLP048: Trust and the Tribal Origins of Leadership

It’s not easy when the likes of social media can be so addictive and time-consuming – so you may think you don’t have the time to read a book or to develop yourself. There is however, an app I highly recommend, it’s called Blinkist. Blinkist is the only app that takes the best key takeaways, the need-to-know information from thousands of nonfiction books, and condenses them down into just 15 minutes so you can read or listen to. Blinkist is made for busy people like you, who want to get the main points of the books quickly without reading the entire book. With an audio feature, Blinkist makes it so easy to finish 4 books a day while you are on the go. 8 Million people are using Blinkist right now and it has a massive and growing library: from self-help, business, health to history books. I like Blinkist because, in less than 15 minutes, I feel like I can fast-track my path to a more intelligent/informed me. I use Blinkist most mornings when I’m making my morning smoothie. In fact this past week alone I’ve gone through The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, The Power of Habits by Charles Duhigg, and Start With Why by Simon Sinek. I love being able to breeze through some of these incredible books and still get the main takeaways from them. It’s actually really, really cool. More heresy- stop weight training? Get flabby and soft?? Well, how about stopping damaging, dangerous heavy weight lifting, and replace it with a type of strength training that is far safer, more beneficial, and will leave you with a body that is not only fit and healthy, but aesthetically pleasing as well. I mean it, friends- I have literally tons of weights in my basement, that nowadays I never touch. Well, not never, because there is one exercise that you do need to use a barbell for that is wonderful- essential actually for your back health and strength- The Jefferson Curl. I just stand on a platform, and slowly perform the lift for 10 reps, slowly and methodically, stretching out until the bar is below my raised feet. I’ll put a video up on www.paleojay.com in the show notes, so you can see it first hand. And sometimes I’ll do lateral raises with small dumbbells or plates, but I generate most of the resistance from within, by flexing deliberately as I move, superslow fashion. But that is it. And now I am 64, and more muscular and stronger than when I was 10 years younger or more, and lifting very heavy on a regular basis. How can this be? Gymnastic rings! Yup, these things are the best tool you can possibly find to really build your body and fitness. Safe, convenient, (I have them hanging in the middle of my basement from the rafters, and I can just walk down and start into ring pushups no muss, no fuss. If you want to go light and high reps to really infuse the blood into your muscles for a pump, you just walk forward, decreasing the “lean” into the rings. Or, you can go back as far as the rings strap reaches, and go “heavier”. And it you really want to go heavy, you can elevate your feet on a bench or platform. Infinitely variable, and the changes from exercise to exercise are instantaneous. For instance, I usually start with a light, high rep set of pushups, where I am standing at just a slight angle, and do a set, followed immediately by flies in the same position. Then, I just back up, and make it harder for another two sets. Back again- you get the idea. I think high rep pushups done like this on the rings are the best total body exercise ever. Strength and endurance all together, along with complete safety. Let’s say you do heavy bench presses. Even if you have a spotter or a power rack for safety, you are definitely damaging your joints. Don’t argue- you are. The compression of the weight on your body, coupled with an incomplete motion of the shoulders leads long term to damage- rotator cuff surgery, at the very least. Pushups, especially on the rings, puts the shoulders through a complete range of motion, strengthening them, not damaging them. It’s just a much more natural movement pattern. Think of our primate cousins- what is it they all do? They brachiate, which means they use their arms to hang from trees, swing and stretch. With gymnastic rings we add this evolutionary exercise back into our modern lives- I honestly believe that without brachiating, in some way in our daily life, we are not giving our whole upper torso and back what they need to stay healthy and strong! It’s ancestral, our bodies need and expect it, just like sunshine and real, non-processed foods. I also do lots of pull-ups on the rings, and rows, along with L-sits, where you just hang on the rings, holding your legs out in front of you. And, pistol squats are wonderful on the rings! Anyone can do a pistol, safely, holding the rings in your hands for balance, and leaning back a bit. The backwards lean would be impossible without the rings, and is the only way to do a pistol, or one-legged squat, that is safe on the knee joint. I also do pushups on yoga blocks in the living room, and with elevated legs on the Perfect Pushup rotating handles. But the rings are the best, the most effective, and really, the most fun. Get a pair- they’re about $30 or so, and hang them up i

Coach Nick from Fusion teaches us how anyone can learn to perform a push-up even if you think you cannot. He takes us step by step through the process with several special modification steps to getting your first push-up before modifying into more challenging push-ups. Fitness requires a solid foundation in technique and body position before adding strength.
The Fitness Fairy just dropped off the Perfect Pushup V2 , from Perfect Fitness. So consider this a quick hands-on, not a full review. (Give me a few days for that. ) My first thoughts, compared to the mobile unit I reviewed a few months ago: my God the handles are a lot more comfortable. So yeah, the main differences here between the first version of the Perfect Pushup (and the mobile one I reviewed) deal with the comfort of the handle and the "spinnyness" of the twisty part. (Technical jargon, I know. ) I used it a few times today and the handle is wider than the aforementioned models. It's pretty helpful, believe me; I've been using the mobile unit for months now, and having a wider handle makes grabbing it much easier. The handle itself is softer (like a foam-type material) with grooves, like a Pringle. Now your hands, theoretically, should slip less (but that was never an issue for me). The other big difference is that it's a lot more "spinny" this time 'round. That taps into the whole idea behind the Perfect Pushup: as you push up and down, your muscles also have to "fight" all the wobbliness caused by the rotation. The smoother the rotation, the harder your muscles have to work. The Perfect Pushup V2 came out earlier his month. It's $40. That's less than what you pay for your iPhone plan, lol!. Oh, and here's a pic of the new Perfect Pushup XP that I saw last week. It'll be available this autumn. The handle detaches and you can use it as an easy access free weight. The handle, as you can see, is also more ergonomically-minded, with contours for your hands, rather than just a straight bar as in the V2 and other models.
