My guest today is someone I've been looking up to and admiring for nearly twenty years. A training and fitness legend, Joe DeFranco is the founder and the owner of DeFranco's Gym where he trains high-caliber athletes. He joins me today with his nearly three decades worth of experience and wisdom to touch upon his Agile 8 approach, reflecting on the important lessons learned over the last twenty-six years of his training career. Joe also walks us through his career and how his mindset about certain things has shifted and changed. He explains how he has become more open-minded over the years about using machines to exercise and train, explains how training pro wrestlers is different than other types of pro athletes such as football players, reflects on whether or not he has found balance between his professional life and personal life, and so, so much more! It was truly an honor having Joe whom I've admired for so long on the show, and I had so much fun chatting with him. If you enjoy this conversation with him, please be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcast app if you aren't subscribed already. I would also really appreciate it if you would share the podcast with at least one other person you know who might also enjoy it and if you would leave me a five-star review! That really helps the show out! Your Career Podcast with Jane Jackson | Create Your Dream Career
Alden Mills shares his career journey with Jane Jackson on Your Career Podcast as he is on a mission to help 100 million people Be Unstoppable. He has over 40 years of experience failing and succeeding in areas including sports, the military, business, nonprofits and community action groups.Alden has learned that success is driven by one vital factor – leadership – of oneself and others. Alden Mills first learned to lead himself. As a weak child with asthma, doctors insisted he limit physical activity and avoid sports. But no he didn't! With the mindset instilled in him by his mother that “no one defines what you can and can't do, but you,” he went on to become a National Collegiate Champion rower, earning Gold and Silver medals at the Olympic Festival, and a Navy SEAL who was top of his class. From a young age he amassed notebooks of invention drawings. One of those ideas became the wildly popular Perfect Pushup and today he holds over 40 patents worldwide. As Alden achieved personal successes, he repeatedly grew into leadership positions. He became captain of his collegiate rowing team, was promoted three times to Navy SEAL platoon commander, and ranked #1 platoon commander each time. He turned a single invention into a global fitness powerhouse in over 70 countries with multiple products, leading Perfect Fitness to become the fastest-growing consumer product company in the country, with over $95 million in sales in just three years. Along the way, Alden cultivated a methodology - Unstoppable Leadership – that develops people into congruent and authentic leaders who successfully build teams and create cultures that are unstoppable.Through speaking, coaching, writing, board advisory, and teaching, Alden helps people acquire the mindset, tools, and actions required to accomplish more than they thought was possible.Find Alden here--------------------------------------------------- Want to know what's missing in your personal Career Toolkit? Alden Mills is a three-time Navy SEAL platoon commander, author of Unstoppable Teams and Be Unstoppable, and was the CEO of Perfect Fitness, one of the fastest-growing companies in America. He learned that even in an elite team like the SEALs, leadership is not a given and respect must be earned. Alden shares about his transition to civilian life. It involved him adapting to a new set of values and culture, but his training in the military helped him set new goals and a mission plan to achieve them. He talks about having 2 oars: passion and purpose. Without one, he would go around in circles, but with both, he has his north star. To be unstoppable, use your progress forward as the fuel that keeps you going with the next action, and then the next, and so on, until you reach your goals. He developed over 40 patents, including the Perfect Pushup, Perfect Pullup, Perfect Sit-up, and Perfect Ab Carver. “I appreciate you talking about all my successes, but oh man have I struggled a lot. And, I really think authentic change comes from facing that friction and going all in on it,” shares Alden Mills, CEO of Perfect Fitness, three time Navy SEAL, division I athlete, best-selling author, and advisor to chief level executives and board members. Today he discusses how to embrace authentic change and be an unstoppable leader. Alden faced many challenges along his path to success starting from a very young age when he was diagnosed with asthma and smaller than normal lungs. In spite of these difficulties, he did not allow them to deter him from getting involved in sports and Navy Seal training. Even when he was almost medically dropped from Seal training, he did not give up on his dreams. Alden explains that people are always more likely to choose pleasure over pain, but that change comes from embracing the pain and pushing through it. It is always more comfortable to stay put in what is familiar, but when the fear of not moving forward becomes too great, then it is time to make a change. Alden shares the importance of congruence, explaining that when what you think and what you desire align, that is the ticket to being able to be persistent through any challenges that arise. To truly be unstoppable you must be willing to embrace change even in the face of adversity. You must stay persistent and be willing to try new ways of doing things in order to achieve success. Being successful and unstoppable does not mean that you will never face hardships or that it won't be a painful journey, rather it means that you will embrace the pain and push through it, because you know what is on the other side of that pain is worthwhile. Quotes: “I appreciate you talking about all my successes, but oh man have I struggled a lot. And I think authentic change comes from facing that friction and going all in on it.” (2:37-2:52 | Alden) “The old adage, you got to see to believe is inaccurate. It's the inverse, we've got to believe before we can see.” (6:38-6:49 | Alden) “When you start thinking persistency, it's not about just doing the same thing over and over and over again. It's about constantly evaluating and looking at new ways to do something, and trying with full vigor. It isn't just going through the motions.” (6:50-7:05 | Alden) “There's two basic fears we grapple with. The fear of staying put and the fear of moving forward. And until the fear of staying put is greater than the fear of moving forward, we're going to stay put.” (8:04-8:24 | Alden) “I first think it comes down to asking yourself, honestly, authentically, what do you want?” (21:01-21:09 | Alden) Links: Mentioned in this episode: Learn more about Mike Horne on Linkedin Email Mike at mike@mike-horne.com Find more about Leading People and Culture with Authenticity Learn more about Alden Mills Website | alden-mills.com Facebook | facebook.com/UnstoppableAldenMills/ Twitter | twitter.com/aldenmills Instagram | instagram.com/alden_mills/ LinkedIn | linkedin.com/in/aldenmills/ YouTube | youtube.com/channel/UCx48SFN1Lei3F3zfKewxZeA Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

QUOTES “When you have a tiger by a tail, with that kind of a launch, as fast as it can go up, it can also go down. I really didn't want to have to sprint to hire a bunch people and then fire a bunch of people.” – Alden Mills “In SEAL team, we would call it darkest before dawn. And that's actually a true phenomenon. It's actually darkest and coldest, right before dawn. And I liken that, to dealing with ideas that you're bringing to market. The biggest challenges you deal with during the darkest moments are the challenges between your ears.” – Alden Mills “But we will be so brutally hard on ourselves. And we will accept that whiner if we're not careful. Now there's another voice. It's much quieter, it's softer, and you have to be aware of it. And tune into it. And that's the whisper.” – Alden Mills TIMESTAMPS [02:52] Alden's failed businesses and how he ended up succeeding [09:12] Three controls to your mindset and how to use them to your advantage [11:33] Getting rid of naysayers [19:46] Fighting temptations to stay focused on your goals [24:55] Becoming an author, the 10 year process [28:38] Sacrificing for success [37:56] How to scale business [41:27] Roadblocks along the way [46:32] Big challenge Alden had to overcome RESOURCES & RELEVANT LINKS Alden Mills Social Media:LinkedIn Website Chan With A Plan Max Chan on Social Media

In this episode, Jaden speaks with Alden Mills, CXO Advisor, Speaker, Founder, and Investor at Alden Mills Company. Alden discusses his journey to becoming a leader and how he uses his mentality of being unstoppable to inspire more leaders. Throughout Alden's life, he has always been a leader. Whether as a team captain in rowing, a Navy SEAL platoon leader, or a philanthropy chair, this has been constant. He's experienced the trials of being a leader and learned what's necessary to become unstoppable in the community and workplace.Alden emphasizes the importance of struggling as a leader. Being a leader inherently means that you struggle occasionally. However, it also means learning from mistakes and making sure similar ones don't reoccur. Having an unstoppable mentality means working through missteps and realizing power as a leader lies in being present with everyone.Another important facet Alden discusses is how to create meaningful relationships. There are two main steps Alden follows to building the most positive relationships he can. The first is to be deeply curious, followed by learning how to specifically communicate and connect with that individual. To do this, Alden recommends suspending judgment of others and being a good listener. Although you cannot control others' opinions, you should always present yourself in the best manner to show you're an unstoppable leader. Now inspiring others through speeches and books, Alden influences change in the workplace by teaching the 3 levels of leadership. The first concerns being yourself and how you present to others, and the second with how workers act and lead. The third level is the community culture that arises as a result of the prior two levels. Alden leverages this framework and emulates these facets of leadership to become unstoppable. He joins us now to share his journey of leadership and to inspire future unstoppable leaders. After leaving the Navy, Alden starts the company Perfect Fitness. What inspired you to start Perfect Fitness? As Alden was building his business, he reached a point where everyone was telling him to give it up, which he nearly did. Alden realized he should have started with innovation instead of invention. What led to you ultimately pivoting again and selling that company? Alden wanted to know how he could achieve a broader impact. He published his first book, Be Unstoppable, in November, 2013. Alden started working on becoming a “content entrepreneur.” Be Unstoppable is really a book about persistence. Alden explains the 8 essential actions to succeed in life. Alden discusses the role exercise plays in persistence and taking control of how you think, feel, and act. Rich transitions the conversation to ask Alden about parenting. Alden discusses the importance of letting children fail so they can learn from their failures. Why do people stay in the “harbor” of their lives and how can they break out? What does it mean to you to have a richer life and what are you doing today to live a richer life? Have the courage to push yourself out of your comfort zone and create a challenge for yourself. 3 Key Points: Surround yourself with a tribe. Stay curious in life and keep learning. It's only a failure if you don't learn anything. Tweetable Quotes: “The best way to thank a veteran is to go out there and serve somebody else.” -Alden Mills “The importance of having somebody else to believe in us cannot be understated enough.” -Alden Mills “I've still failed way more times than I've succeeded.” -Alden Mills “I'm no more extraordinary than the next person, I just have the willingness to keep going.” -Alden Mills “There is no greater lesson than learning from failure.” -Alden Mills “You're not failing unless you're not learning from it.” -Alden Mills Resources Mentioned: Alden Mills: Website | Instagram | Twitter

The Fitness Fairy just dropped off the Perfect Pushup V2 , from Perfect Fitness. So consider this a quick hands-on, not a full review. (Give me a few days for that. ) My first thoughts, compared to the mobile unit I reviewed a few months ago: my God the handles are a lot more comfortable. So yeah, the main differences here between the first version of the Perfect Pushup (and the mobile one I reviewed) deal with the comfort of the handle and the "spinnyness" of the twisty part. (Technical jargon, I know. ) I used it a few times today and the handle is wider than the aforementioned models. It's pretty helpful, believe me; I've been using the mobile unit for months now, and having a wider handle makes grabbing it much easier. The handle itself is softer (like a foam-type material) with grooves, like a Pringle. Now your hands, theoretically, should slip less (but that was never an issue for me). The other big difference is that it's a lot more "spinny" this time 'round. That taps into the whole idea behind the Perfect Pushup: as you push up and down, your muscles also have to "fight" all the wobbliness caused by the rotation. The smoother the rotation, the harder your muscles have to work. The Perfect Pushup V2 came out earlier his month. It's $40. That's less than what you pay for your iPhone plan, lol!. Oh, and here's a pic of the new Perfect Pushup XP that I saw last week. It'll be available this autumn. The handle detaches and you can use it as an easy access free weight. The handle, as you can see, is also more ergonomically-minded, with contours for your hands, rather than just a straight bar as in the V2 and other models.
