Ryan Munger tells us how riding at Woodbine is so much better than what he was doing in South Africa. We love to talk about the daily double and when one paid over $2,400, we threw it into this audio. We've got the 1st race on the newly built 5/8ths track at Grand River. Driver Chris Brown carried an 87-race losing streak into a Stakes race at Century Downs – guess what happened? For fans of Karen Russell's Swamplandia! comes a new tale of found family and magic. After his mother dies, Peter Berry collects memories in broken watches the way others collect photographs. Peter takes his box filled with broken watches and flees his childhood home to a battered apartment complex in San Francisco—his mother's favorite city—in an attempt to bury the box with the dark truths of her haunting memory before she returns to take him too. The night Sofia Morales's daughter disappears, Sofia begins to hear her daughter's voice. Her world crumbles—her marriage crumbles. After demanding her husband leave, Sofia runs from Buenos Aires, Argentina to San Francisco—a city she always wanted to visit—renting an apartment in a beat-up complex at the edge of North Beach and blasting the radio to escape the voice of whom she can't bear to listen. Peter and Sophia become close friends in the confined space of the city, finding companionship in the shadow of their unspoken nightmares. When Sofia receives a letter from her estranged husband, and Peter proves unable to bury his box of watches, the ghosts of their pasts once more threaten the lives they have created, now tearing at the fabric of their friendship with the tormented memories they keep, whether real or imagined. Unfolding over three decades, Life Between Seconds sets Peter and Sophia on a collision course with their respective pasts propelling them toward either redemption or damnation. Engrossing, heartbreaking, and surreal Douglas Weissman's first adult novel is a meditation on trauma, family, and how to heal after a great loss. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/daniel-lucas66/message

All Home Care Matters was honored to welcome two remarkable guests, Peter Berry & Deb Blunt. They are cyclists, authors, and dementia advocates helping to raise awareness for dementia.   Peter was diagnosed with early onset dementia eight years ago, when he was 50. Before his diagnosis, Peter ran a successful timber business. After a period of depression following his diagnosis, Peter made the decision to live well with the condition. He is very keen to help others understand his experience, both of the condition and the diagnosis process. When he's not delivering presentations, Peter spends his days cycling around the Suffolk countryside, being the embodiment of his own doctrine of living well with dementia.   Deb is a retired social worker. She took early retirement and moved from London to Suffolk five years ago. The friendship with Peter has helped Deb to fulfil one of her main life ambitions: to be a published author. But this friendship has also taught Deb has to re-evaluate her own life and to try to live in the moment and to appreciate the joys that life has to offer.   Peter and Deb have written two books: “Slow Puncture, Living Well with Dementia” and “Walk with Me: Musings Through the Dementia Fog”.

At the age of 9, Peter Berry's family was involved in a car accident that killed both his parents, injured his 5 year old sister and left both he and his brother paralyzed from the waist down. Despite losing his parents and use of his lower body, he used his innate optimistic mindset and physical drive to focus on what he could do. Since then, he has redefined what family means, is thriving and continuing the legacy of his parents. His drive, determination and follow through on commitment have earned him a full scholarship for wheelchair basketball at University of Alabama and a spot on Team USA. Sage House is a dementia hub in Tangmere, West Sussex. Said to be the first of its kind in the UK, the hub is located in a light, airy building of dementia-friendly coloured zones, wide passageways, Daisy's café and numerous meeting rooms for everything from legal advice on drawing up wills and powers of attorney to hairdressing, from Citizens Advice Bureau sessions and dementia assessment clinics to Reiki. The hub provides a one-stop shop to give all the various services that someone diagnosed with dementia and his or her family might need. Crucially, they will also be allocated one person to help them navigate their way around the mind-boggling systems and choices they will now confront. Chief executive Sally Tabbner is passionate about what she does. She was recruited even before Sage House officially opened in 2018 and has taken her team from a staff of three to 36 employees and 66 volunteers who between them over the past 12 months have provided direct support to over seventeen hundred people affected by dementia. So successful has the hub proved that Chichester University is currently evaluating the model to see if it might be rolled out across the UK. Volunteer Ronnie Patmore, whose late wife Dolly used the hub until she died during the first Covid lockdown in 2020, initially felt guilty and doubtful about leaving his wife in the care of others. However, ably supported by Jackie, a dedicated, personal Wayfinder, Ronnie soon realised that the hub and its resources were just what the couple needed. And since Dolly died, he's volunteered at Sage House, helping in the café and, in his inimitable way, cheering up the customers. “I find myself chatting to people starting out on the same journey as I have had,” says Ronnie. “I know what it's like and I hope that if I speak to them I might brighten their day”.Find out more about Sage House at www. www.dementiasupport.org.uk/sage-houseThe book Pippa mentioned, by Peter Berry & Deb Bunt, is called Slow Puncture: Living Well With Dementia, and is available from Amazon. They've written a new book, a volume of poetry, musings, that Peter sent to Deb via text messages at the end of long days living with dementia. She transcribed his words and lovingly put them in a book called Walk With Me: Musings Through The Dementia Fog. Its pages are exquisitely illustrated with the work of Daniel Ruffles, a talented friend and photographer who captures the beauty of the Suffolk landscape and coastal areas where Peter and Deb live. In celebration of this vital new addition to dementia literature, we're replaying their podcast interview. After the podcast, you can read more about the book on our website, AlzAuthors.com. Enjoy! About Peter and Deb Peter Berry was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's at age 50 and took an early retirement from his job working in the family's timber business. After the devastating diagnosis, he became depressed but, being a ‘glass half full' personality, battled through his depression and focused on his lifelong passion for cycling. He has used this passion to raise awareness of the condition, particularly in younger people. Peter's whole philosophy is to live well with dementia and to inspire others to do the same. He maintains an active lifestyle due to his love of cycling, which keeps him fit both below and above the eyebrows, he says. He rides a penny farthing, a single speed bike, a road bike, and a 1950's Claud Butler, although not all at the same time – he's good, but not that good, he jokes. Along with his friend Deb Bunt, Peter cycles nearly every day. Their travels throughout Suffolk, England have led them to have many serious heart-to-hearts about his disease, which Deb put together in a book called Slow Puncture: Living Well with Dementia. “It's a book about me,” Peter says, “but a book I have never read and never will read as my short-term memory means I have forgotten the previous sentence as soon as I have started a new one.” In this episode we discuss the difficulties encountered with a dementia diagnosis at age 50, the financial pressures he's had to overcome, and how cycling has made life with COVID tolerable. Peter discussed the deep depression that engulfed him after his diagnosis and shared how he managed to not only climb out of it but learned how to live well with dementia, and to inspire others to do the same. "You're looking through the wrong end of the telescope", says Peter Berry of Baccus 6mm - "6mm figures aren't tiny, 28mm figures are very very big".On this episode of the Tabletop Miniature Hobby Podcast, we're exploring the world of wargaming in the 6mm scale. This is a great conversation highlighting the many joys of six. Peter is keen to point out that this isn't a case of one scale OR another (most of us love 28mm first and foremost, after all), but using the right tool for the right job. It almost goes without saying, but, the smaller the scale of your troops, the bigger a battle you can have. I'll bet many listeners to this show will have first-hand experience of that, too. Do you remember navigating multi-based squads of Eldar and Orks through the cardboard skyscrapers of Space Marine in your youth? There are other practical appeals of 6mm. You can buy an entire army for less than £50, paint it up in a day or two, and store it in a shoebox. People might find the thought of painting these miniatures intimidating but as Peter advises, you should try to "paint the unit, not the man". He has some painting guides on the Baccus 6mm website, too. Also on this episodeWe talk about the solo and co-op game that is Pony Wars.6mm is popular with historical wargamers, but Perfect Six, Microworld, and Rapier have great fantasy ranges. The Joys of Six is a 6mm wargaming event that takes place in Sheffield each summer.Bonus resource: Want to make your own 6mm-scale trees?Oh and I talk about the worst Patreon campaign in podcasting, too. This won't be used to improve the show, nor will it include any rewards. Don't worry though, I won't bang on about it all the time, either!

Peter Berry uses cycling as a way to remove the stigma from a dementia diagnosis. Deb Bunt's life changed when she meet cyclist, Peter Berry (who had an early-onset dementia diagnosis at age 50). As she and Peter cycled together, their friendship grew and he started to share the story of his dementia diagnosis. When he said, “I fear I am just going to forget who I am,” Deb offered to keep a note of his thoughts for him. Thus the beginnings of the book Slow Puncture, Living Well With Dementia was born. “Dementia is a diagnosis for the whole family,” Peter says, “but don't keep it secret because it will eat away at the whole family.” Since that day, he has learned to live with his very own dementia monster. From depression and suicide attempts through to his determination to confront his dementia, Peter has embarked on a series of challenges to show that life isn't over with dementia. Looking at Peter when he is cycling, you would never know that this fit, healthy man is living with dementia. His goal now is to do what he can to erase the stigma of his diagnosis. He does this by raising money for dementia charities, cycling hundreds of miles in his quest to show that life is always worth living. Peter Berry and Deb Bunt met by chance – through the spin of the wheel one might say – in Sax Velo, a cycling shop in Suffolk in 2018. Deb (together with husband Martin) had recently retired and moved to the market town of Saxmundham. Peter, a Suffolk man through and through, took over his father’s timber business; for him the trees and woods of his county are as familiar as old friends and family. Peter is also a keen cyclist and, aged just 50, he was diagnosed with dementia. Deb knew no one in her new neighbourhood. And very little about dementia, other than holding the common and mistaken belief that it only came with old age, liver spots and false teeth. Peter, slim, fit, and living with Alzheimer’s when she meets him, not only blows apart this myth but offers to show her some local cycling routes. And so an unlikely friendship begins. Like all the best friendships it’s mutually reciprocal, hugely rewarding for both, and based on trust. It’s been captured in a remarkable book, brilliantly entitled Slow Puncture. It tells of their year together and in doing so, lays bare Peter Berry’s tumultuous Alzheimer’s journey in his words. So they are co-authors but it is Deb Bunt who has written it. Peter simply can’t. What’s more he will never read it. He will never, in fact, read his own story. The more the pair cycle together over the months, the more the trust builds between them and the more Deb learns, not just about Peter and his dementia monster, his ways of coping and his hidden demons, but about herself. Peter shows her the joys to be found in living in the moment and of celebrating the journey for what it is even if you lose your way and end up, as it were, in Orford instead of Framlingham. “It is perhaps a cruel paradox that Peter’s dementia, which is chipping away at his world and shrinking it, has created a whole new world for me,” Deb says. While, in his inimitable way, Peter tells her that while the condition’s taken so much from him – his income, his self-esteem, his future, he has taken a lot from it. “I live every day; I enjoy every day even if I might forget it moments later. They say you only live once, but that’s rubbish: you only die once. You live every day. And that’s what I fully intend to do”. This quarter, we've talked about leadership from several different perspectives. My guest today is Peter Berry, whose leadership experience is varied and fascinating; particularly interesting in light of his undergraduate degree in Fine Arts. Peter is a perfect example of how a liberal arts degree can be a great springboard for moving into leadership roles. Peter talks about what employers are looking for in today's workforce, both for entry-level positions and as Millennials step into leadership roles. We talk about emotional intelligence, managing employees, critical thinking skills, communication skills, the ability to articulate a vision and enroll others in that vision, and the ability to offer solutions as being the skills employers seek to move employees into the leadership ranks. One of my favorite concepts from our conversation is what Peter calls “Life/Work Balance,” because Millennials put their quality of life before their job. So much has come up with the Me Too Movement and women speaking up. More and more men are also speaking up about their own wounds and their own experiences with sexual violation and the things that they’ve gone through as well. In the healing process, we don’t make each other male and female villains, victims or victimizers, and create a further divide. We heal in a way that can bring us back together in partnership and equality. Peter is passionate about supporting women to heal from the wounds of patriarchy. He is the co-founder and partner at Juicy Sacred Living along with his wife, Licia, and focuses on creating partnership and equality and creating sacred union on earth. That means supporting people to practice partnership both internally and in relationships by taking those seemingly opposing energies, or feminine and masculine energy, and bringing them into a connection.
