Get ready to decrypt the complexities of cyber safety and stay informed. Stand at the frontier of cyber security news, where every insight is a key to unlocking the mysteries of the digital domain. Your voyage through the cyber news vortex starts now. [00:00:29] offsetkeyz: Welcome back to the daily decrypt. Today, we're going to be talking about image-based. Phishing scams to include QR codes, but also just regular images. Highlighting a discovery that a staggering 76% of organizations find themselves in snared by image-based and QR code phishing. After that we're going to switch gears and talk about some tax time tricks, where the IRS flags down. New and classic scams as the tax deadline looms. We're also discussing the first ever. South Korean citizen. Has [00:01:00] been detained by Russia for espionage. As well as seven new Python packages that have been known to drain your crypto wallet. [00:01:13] offsetkeyz: Alrighty. So one of the most important hacks out there. Is called fishing and we're all hopefully very familiar with how that works. Clicking links in emails is the most classic way that people get phished. But attackers are starting to evolve. According to Osterman research, 93% of it, security professionals are aware of image-based phishing attacks, targeting their organizations. 70% of these organizations feel their current security stacks are effective against . Image-based QR code phishing attacks. Yet 76% were still compromised in the last 12 months, according to iron scales and Osterman research. So we've all heard of QR codes. It's essentially when you scan this weird digitized black and white [00:02:00] image and a link or a URL pops up in your camera, then you click on it and you go about your day. We all understand how that can be pretty malicious. You can hide links in there. They can make it look like you're going somewhere that you're not. Watch out for QR codes. What I didn't realize was going on as well, or what's called image based phishing scams. And those can range from. Injecting malicious code into a company's logo. Too. Images that look like plain text. So almost like a screenshot of text, but it's just an image. But when you click on these images, They redirect you to the malicious URLs, but those URLs are buried so deep in the images, metadata. That they bypass a lot of security measures. If the email is just containing an image that. Shows text that text, actually, isn't getting scanned. And thus bypassing its security checks. And if you're looking at your email and you're seeing text. Simply clicking to highlight [00:03:00] something. Can activate the URL in that image. So the best way to catch this is to have any sort of redirect protections in your email address, like Mimecast or something like that, where. It keeps it all. Self-contained in the app. There's nothing being downloaded. You're not allowed to redirect out. Maybe you're prompted once you click on something to say, Hey, is this where you're intending to go? Because this is where the link goes. But watch out, try not to click any images in your emails. [00:03:40] offsetkeyz: Tax day is looming. It's coming up in a few weeks. And we just wanted to talk a little bit about the scams that you might be seeing or will see as this deadline approaches. One of the toughest ones to spot is physical mail scams. They will look exactly like they came from the IRS. And they'll often [00:04:00] say. You are owed some sort of money from the IRS. Maybe in the form of an unclaimed refund. Or simply stating that you paid too much last year and we want to give you some money back. These are hard to. Spot, because this is a real type of mail that you could get. So I'm not going to tell you not to respond to this male. Just be cautious and verify that it's actually coming from the IRS. If you do reply to the mailing, ask for a contact number that you can call to verify. Maybe Google. Some of the verbiage that are found in these letters, maybe the address, the return address, Google, some of that stuff to see if it's. Actually going to the IRS or if it's going somewhere else. An extremely common scam is when taxpayers are getting calls from fake IRS agents. Often falsely accusing them of owing more tax. And. Creating a sense of urgency by describing the punishments that will come about. If they do not pay this [00:05:00] owed tax. On this one, it's really important to know that. The IRS will always initiate communication through the mail, which makes that previous scam harder to find. But anyone who's calling you from the IRS is immediately a scam. If you take nothing else away from this episode, know that you will never get a call from anyone from the IRS. On that note also keep an eye out for any sort of emails from the IRS. Like I said before, they will always initiate communications through the mail. And this fourth scam. You might not even know about, but. Scammers can take information that they found on you on the web or on the dark web, whether that be your address or your social security number or all these things, and actually file tax returns. For you just. Redirecting the return money to them. So it behooves you to file early, to try to get ahead of this. But keep an eye out. For any signs that your refund. Has gone to somebody else. If it has contact the IRS, maybe [00:06:00] even contact the FBI. If you are a tax professional, you are not exempt from these scams. One of the most common ones out there is. Fake taxpayers reaching out to you for your services. This will often be through email and it will be a phishing attempt. If you click any of the links. They could redirect to somewhere you don't want to be. They might also reach out asking for your electric filing identification number under the pretext of verification. But with the intent to hijack your identity and file fraudulent returns. All taxpayers. Should secure an identity protection pin from the IRS. And use only verified tax filing services. And only communicate personal information through encrypted channels. If possible, do most of your tax filing in-person with the tax professional? Or use TurboTax where. You're entering in your information in a web browser. Encrypted. And not sending things back and forth through mail or through email. Those are not the most secure forms of communication. There's a [00:07:00] lot of money to be had from. Tax returns. And fraudsters know that. So as much as I hate to say it and. Encouraged sticking to the big names, but those will be your safest bets. H and R block TurboTax. Places like that. [00:07:15] transition: Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do. [00:07:21] offsetkeyz: And finally, we've got a quick lightning round for you. There are two stories here. One. Uh, south Korean national was caught in Russia's espionage net. Bake one soon, a south Korean citizen was arrested for espionage. Marking a first in Russia, South Korea relations. Now, this was reported by TASS. And it's marketed as a Russian news agency. And you can find the link to that in the show notes below. Bake Juan soon was transferred to Moscow for further investigation. After being identified, handing over classified information to foreign intelligence. The information that this individual handed over was classified as top [00:08:00] secret. Which reflects the sensitivity and potential diplomatic implication of the charges. Okay. And finally. In relation to yesterday's stories with the leather wallet. [00:08:09] offsetkeyz: The hacker news has identified. Seven Python packages. That if downloaded can drain your crypto wallets. This research comes from reversing labs. And it outlines these Python packages. Being designed to steal BIP 39 pneumonic phrases, which is critical for cryptocurrency wallet, recovery. These packages have been downloaded over 7,451 times. And our targeting developers specifically in the crypto wallet space. Like I said there are seven malicious packages. They will be listed in the show notes, but just to read them out, it's JS BIP 39 dash decrypt. BIP 39 pneumonic decrypt. Pneumonic to address and. Others. So if you're in the crypto wallet, development space, keep an eye out for these packages. And if you accidentally have [00:09:00] downloaded them, Please remove them. And. Um, probably transfer your crypto. Revoke all login sessions. And change that passcode. All right. So that's all we've got for you today. Keep an eye on those tax returns and we will talk to you some more tomorrow.

Many of us are already stressed out with work, taking care of family, and all the other life things. Then, your child says something that hurts your feelings. It's a difficult experience to deal with especially when you have to deal with their intense emotional outbursts, too. Lauren discusses the seventh of her “7 Disarming Communication Tactics” in this episode: the “I feel….” Strategy. Part of this strategy is having a healthy conversation with your kiddo about how you feel. If you model healthy communication by expressing your feelings, your kiddo learns how to manage their own emotions. Discussing feelings can also help them develop empathy and compassion.Lauren also talks about how to communicate feelings effectively. She also gives some important Do's and Don'ts relative to this strategy, as well as when and how to talk to you kiddo. (Her blog post linked below has great tips, too!) Remember – When making changes like this, give both yourself and your kiddos some grace. YOU are learning a new “language”, and THEY need time to understand it. When problems come up or children misbehave, effective communication is key to changing the situation. Can writing a note to a child with good old pen and paper be effective? It sure can! Lauren discusses the sixth of her “7 Disarming Communication Tactics” in this episode: the “Written Note” Strategy. Part of the reason this strategy works is because it removes any tone or emotion from the message. This option gives you a chance to cool down before responding. With less emotion in the message, kiddos are less likely to feel criticized or bossed around. The body's stress response system REALLY likes that! Lauren also talks about the best ways to use this strategy and how it can be most effective. One great reason to communicate with a note? When feeling stressed or emotionally reactive, slowing down to write a quick note really helps you to cool down and get your thoughts organized. It stops you from saying things in the heat of the moment that you did not intend. Remember – When making changes like this, give both yourself and your kiddos some grace. YOU are learning a new “language”, and THEY need time to understand it. You find dirty clothes all over your kiddo's bedroom floor. What do you say? And how do you say it? Information gives your child facts about something and helps them to make a decision. Instructions are about telling your child what to do. A blunt, straightforward order with no option for discussion. Which is better? Lauren discusses the fifth of her “7 Disarming Communication Tactics” in this episode: the “Giving Information” Strategy. This strategy is all about giving your kiddo information about what is needed and not instructions (AKA “giving orders”). This option gives them a chance to be in control of the situation instead of being told what to do. The body's stress response system REALLY likes that! Lauren provides tips on how to use this strategy effectively. One of the most important tips…..give them time to process what you just said. They need a few seconds or a minute to take in the information and solve the problem you just presented.Remember – When making changes like this, give both yourself and your kiddos some grace. YOU are learning a new “language”, and THEY need time to understand it. Do you find yourself talking, lecturing, or repeating yourself to your kiddos? Resulting in getting annoyed and then raising your voice or yelling? Stress! How about a new strategy? Lauren discusses the fourth of her “7 Disarming Communication Tactics” in this episode: the “One Word” Strategy. Instead of lecturing or repeating yourself, try using one-word reminders to help guide their behavior. When you've discussed and agreed in advance, these short clues are all they need to remember the task. One reason this works well: It reduces the number of words the brain has to process. Why would we do this? Language is stimulating. The more language we use, the more kids are stimulated. More language also means the more kids have to process all those words. Then, once they process the words, they have to take action. That takes a lot of time and energy. Now, try using just a few words. Kids can process and take action much faster. And using just a few words feels less like “an order” and more like a reminder. By guiding and not lecturing, kids feel they are not “being told what to do” and lose all control. The stress response system likes this! Often, how we communicate with kids triggers their stress response system, and they get stuck in their Emotional Brain. When that happens, they cannot act/think logically or rationally. You cannot reason with them. This is why it's so important to “disarm” the stress response system by using communication that sets kids up for success. Remember – When making changes like this, give both yourself and your kiddos some grace. YOU are learning a new “language”, and THEY need time to understand it. Getting kids to communicate. We all use so many strategies to try and motivate our children to talk with us. We do our best to ensure we capture their interest so they participate. Here's another strategy to add to your tool belt! Lauren discusses the third of her “7 Disarming Communication Tactics” in this episode: the “Humor” Strategy. Lauren talks about how humor can be used to improve communication between you and your kiddo…all while neutralizing the stress response system. Using humor has been shown to have these positive effects:Adds joy and happiness to our lives.Generates optimism.Increases confidence, self-esteem, and enthusiasm.Reduces stress levels.Helps us enjoy life's playful aspects.Helps people accept and handle differences better.Helps kids deal with childhood adversities (teasing, changing schools, moving)Develops critical thinking skills, communication skills, and creativity. The BEST part of using humor in communication………it takes us from the Emotional Brain (IE kiddo having meltdown) into the logic and rational part of the Thinking Brain. Once kids are in their “logic and reason” part of the brain, we can again guide and redirect them. We all can appreciate some humor now and then. Many of us are not natural comedians, though. Lauren talks about how to easily add in humor when talking to kids of all ages. Remember – When making changes like this, give both yourself and your kiddos some grace. YOU are learning a new “language”, and THEY need time to understand it. Mentioned in this episode:Pneumonic for the 7 Communication Tactics: SCHWINFLauren answers this week's listener question during the episode: How do you best figure out the need or root cause of why a child is behaving badly or what triggers the behavior?Try-at-home tip: White space.Other related resources from The Behavior Hub: Blog Post: Positive Communication: Try Some HumorImprove Communication by Giving Kids Choices5 Reasons Behaviors OccurPodcast:Why Behaviors Occur - The 5 Needs AreasOur Online Courses: From Conflict to Calm: Communicating so kids listen the FIRST time From Wild Emotions to Tamed Feelings – How to Self-Regulate (5 Needs Areas)Classroom Design with the Brain in MindDo you have a question? Communication is a two-way street. As we talk with kiddos, we are also teaching them how to talk with others. When it comes to teaching kids communication skills, the younger the better! Lauren discusses the second of her “7 Disarming Communication Tactics” in this episode: the “Choices” Strategy. Part of this strategy is giving your kiddo choices and being involved in the decision. This option gives them a chance to be in control of the situation instead of being told what to do. The body's stress response system REALLY likes that! While this is not a new idea, the key thing to remember is…..the choices need to be fair and motivating to the child, not just choices that you/the adult think of. Let them be part of the process in coming up with the choices! Reasons why this Strategy works:Having choices can greatly reduce the “power struggle” with kids.Kids gain a sense of control.Kids feel heard, like they matter, and their opinion counts.Choices force them to think and weigh their options.Choices are an opportunity to learn and to take pride/ownership in their choice. When kids feel heard and valued, it improves their self esteem and feelings of self worth. Another reason why good communication is a win-win! Another important item….. timing. In order to make a choice, the child needs to access their Thinking Brain. If a child is stuck in their Emotional Brain (tantrum, breakdown), they cannot access their Thinking Brain. Therefore, they can't make choices at that moment. Remember – When making changes like this, give both yourself and your kiddos some grace. YOU are learning a new “language”, and THEY need time to understand it. Mentioned in this episode:Pneumonic for the 7 Communication Tactics: SCHWINFLauren answers this week's listener question during the episode: How do we calm kids when they insist they cannot be calmed?Try-at-home tip: Less in your space is more clarity for the mind. Great communication with your children results in stronger relationships, greater cooperation, and feelings of worth and value. As adults, we have no problem dishing out instructions but that takes away all of the child's control and ownership. This often leads to kids that don't listen. Lauren discusses the first of her 7 Communication Tactics in this episode: the “I see…” Strategy. Part of this strategy is giving your kiddo a problem to solve instead of a verbal order. This option gives them a chance to be in control of the situation instead of being told what to do. The body's stress response system REALLY likes that! Remember – When making changes like this, give both yourself and your kiddos some grace. The theme of this week's episode is: silver linings. We may be living in a 2020 Hellscape but at least it's not 14th century Europe; at least that's what we tell ourselves as Katie turns the pages of The Haunted Heart History Book to the Black Death. It's here that we get some amazing tips to staying healthy such as: covering yourself in piss and shit, definitely DON'T bathe, don't sin, and drink plenty of aromatic teas. Oh, and there's something about a dead sheep in there somewhere. All of that is rounded out with some spooky facts about the aftermath of the deadliest pandemic in recorded human history. Contributor: Don Stader, MD Educational Pearls: Yersinia Pestis is the bacteria that caused the black plague. It was first discovered to be the cause of the bubonic plague in 1800s in China during the 3rd bubonic plague where 10-20 million people died Causes 3 types of plague: Bubonic plague: characterized by severe swelling of lymph nodes called buboes, most commonly in the groin, also axillary and olecranon lymph nodes. Septicemic plague: characterized by severe sepsis, no lymphadenopathy. This strain famously causes disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC) and can lead to limb necrosis and fingers turning black. Hence the name the Black Death. Pneumonic: most dangerous of the plagues and characterized by PNA on CXR with pronounced mediastinal lymphadenopathy Fleas are the largest reservoir, although prairie dogs and squirrels have been known to carry the bacteria as well. Yersinia Pestis creates a microfilm inside the stomach of fleas and renders them incapable of digesting your blood when they try to eat it and they vomit the bacteria into your blood. Doxycycline and Ciprofloxacin are the mainstay of treatment. References Achtman M, Zurth K, Morelli G, Torrea G, Guiyoule A. Carniel E. Dave Lukas, The Misfit Entrepreneur_Breakthrough Entrepreneurship
This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Jonathan Levi. Jonathan is a serial entrepreneur and lifehacker born and raised in Silicon Valley. He’s the author of the blockbuster “Become a Super Learner series,” founder of Superhuman Academy, and host of the top rated podcast, Becoming Superhuman. And he’s just released his latest book, The Only Skill That Matters. Jonathan has taught hundreds of thousands of students what it means to be superhuman and live richer, fuller, healthier, and happier lives. And it all stems from asking one simple question, “How do you know how to learn?” I can’t wait to explore this with him and have him share what he has learned along his entrepreneurial journey. www.SuperhumanAcademy.com/book Free 7-Day Trial www.SuperhumanAcademy.com/squad Jonathan has always felt like a misfit. When he was young, he was the quirky kid in class and had ADD. His parents didn’t want to medicate him and things worked out ok until he got into his early teens. He had trouble keeping up and learning and keeping up socially. Even some of his friends turned on him and made him the butt of their jokes. He went through several years of depression and contemplated suicide. He felt worthless. Then he discovered entrepreneurship. His first stab at it was as a DJ for parties. He then started doing web design. He realized that through entrepreneurship he could develop and improve himself. It helped to understand that if he can be good at entrepreneurship, he could be good at other things and develop into the person he wanted to be. The way he got our of depression was through accomplishment – but also learning about being the type of person he wanted to be. He realized his self-esteem was based on who he was, not what he wanted to achieve. Learning and the ability to learn is what made the difference. After graduating college and selling his business, he went to an accelerated MBA program where he met some individuals that were experts in accelerated learning. Jonathan immersed himself in learning this skill. What does it mean to be superhuman? It is our generations renaissance man or woman. These are well rounded people that have it all dialed in and have control through all aspects of their lives. They are solid financially, in their relationships, in great health, etc. Beware of the word “average.” Being superhuman is as simple as beating the average. At the 10 min mark, Jonathan and I talk about how being superhuman is also about the standards you have in all areas of your life… “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.” ― Robert A. Heinlein Explain Pneumonic Training… Memory is a ticky challenging thing. We all know what it is like to forget things. There is no learning without memory. There are essentially “cheat codes” to the human brain. We are a product of millions of years of evolution and the brain spends a certain of energy on certain things. For example, 70% of your sensory processing is visual. Our brains have a huge capacity to memorize certain things – specifically smell and taste – and then visual. Pneumonic training is creating visual symbols that they remember and organizing them in their minds At the 17 min mark, Jonathan goes through an example with me on how to use pneumonic training to learn a different language. The key is to creative a vivid picture in your mind and association what you want to remember with it. The picture can almost be absurd and outlandish, so it is easier to remember. But memories can get cloudy the more we access them. Each time, we take them out, they can change. But the first step to memorize is to listen intently and be focused and present. What can people do to read and comprehend at a higher level? Improve your memory capability first. If you move your eyes less, you can read faster. Understand and learn how to minimize subvocalizing. Tell us about the “slipstream technique…” Jonathan tells the story of how it started… Slipstreaming is figuring out a way to work with someone who is doing what you want to be doing. It is finding very unique, standout ways of getting in the door, getting buy in, finding opportunities, and learning from the top mentors in the space you want to be in. Tell us about the Only Skill That Matters… The only skill that matters is improving the ability to learn. By learning to learn better, you can open any door you want to. What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned in building your businesses? Jonathan sold his first business after he turned 24 – an INC 5000 business. He took away a lot of scars and realized one thing he did not want to do is “be in a business where he shipped “widgets” all over the world.” He took everything he learned about learning and figured out to build great online courses. He was very weary of going for big for the sake of going for big. He started Superhuman Academy as side business to bring in some income and as things do with entrepreneurs, it has taken on a bigger mission and thus has become a much bigger business. To build anything you will have to sacrifice things to make it succeed. At the 43-minute mark, Jonathan and I have a discussion about what it is like to have our eyes opened up to bigger possibilities and be shown by others what can happen in this world. Imagine if you could have no constraints, what would it take to be able to fund that? How would you change your business to be able to do that? The trick of getting around incredible successful people that can help you level up is not to compare yourself to them, but learn from them, and if possible seek their help. Best advice for an entrepreneur starting out? Understand your market. Understand your customer. Have your customer lined up before you create your product! Have interested parties ready to go. At the 47 min mark, Jonathan talks about Brain health…. First, your brain is indistinguishable from you. You are the summary of your memories, thoughts, opinions, ideas, etc. If you don’t take care of it, you are losing a part of yourself. Additionally, your brain is the only organ you neither replace of live without. You can transplant other organs, even your heart, but not your brain. The brain is an incredibly sensitive organ, so your sleep, earing habits, exercise, etc. all help it to be its best. Jonathan’s favorite quote: “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.” ― Robert A. Heinlein Jonathan's Misfit 3: Life is not prefix, it’s a la carte. You can choose your life the way you want and arrange the parts however you want. Happiness is a choice. You choose how you perceive the events of your life, how you respond, and how you frame them in your life. No matter what you want to do or achieve in life, the only thing standing between you and getting it is learning and that is why learning is the only skill that matters.
An outbreak of plague in Madagascar has killed 124 people and infected 1200. Although not an uncommon occurrence in the rural areas, this epidemic has hit the larger cities in the island nation, and is the deadlier version called "pneumonic plague". Pneumonic plague can be cured if found very early but if not, invariably results in death. Dr. Alton tells you all about bubonic, pneumonic, and septicemic plague and what the off-grid medic could do to prevent this terrible infectious disease from running rampant. Also, inflammation of the liver, called "hepatitis", is caused by various viruses which are harder to cure than a bacteria like what causes the plague. There are several types of hepatitis, and it's important to know what to do to avoid becoming a victim of it. Symptoms, diagnosis, and prevention are discussed by our hosts Joe Alton MD and Amy Alton ARNP. Plus, we start a series on pain issues, discussing different types of pain and also the government's categorization of drugs into "schedules" from 1-5. All this and more in the latest episode of The Survival Medicine Hour with Joe and Amy Alton! Follow us on Twitter @preppershow Facebook: Doom and Bloom YouTube: DrBones NurseAmy Channel
