Ron Baetiong, Founder of Podcast Network Asia, and Jeremy Au discussed: Philippines Basketball Jock to Founder Exit: Ron shared his early life as a basketball jock raised in a lower-middle-class Filipino household by his single mother. Determined to achieve the Filipino dream of owning a house, Ron worked in a call center at 18 while studying at the University of Santo Tomas. Ron's time at Groupon (2011) taught him foundational sales skills that later became pivotal. He launched his first startup, a nightlife app called Partyphile, inspired by his personal pain points as a clubgoer. Despite initial traction with 50,000 users, the business struggled with monetization. By 2016, Ron pivoted to Chatbot.ph, leveraging the emerging chatbot market. Within a year, the company was acquired by Sterling Paper Group, allowing Ron to fulfill his dream of buying his mother a house. 2. Startup Failure Lessons: His journey revealed key lessons about being a solo founder and the importance of monetization strategies. Ron shared how missing opportunities to sell club tables—a lucrative revenue stream—hindered growth. The business faced a turning point in 2016, following a tragic incident at a major rave event and political shifts under Duterte's presidency that dampened the nightlife scene. Transitioning to Chatbot.ph, Ron capitalized on timing and his ability to build quick MVPs. By mid-2017, the company generated over $10,000 in monthly revenue and attracted investors, leading to its acquisition. Ron highlighted how this pivot taught him to prioritize building strong teams and focusing on cash flow. 3. Podcast Network Asia & Serye FM In 2019, Ron founded the podcast HustleShare to document startup journeys and give back to the Philippine ecosystem. He expanded this passion into Podcast Network Asia (PNA), which grew to manage 320 shows, including exclusive collaborations with Spotify, paying $20,000 per show annually. However, Spotify's strategic pivot in 2023—ending exclusivity deals—led to significant financial strain for PNA. In response, Ron launched Serye FM to address the growing demand for localized audio content. Serye FM adopted a paywall model within Spotify, enabling Filipino listeners to access serialized audio series. With 100% month-on-month growth over five months, Serye FM has emerged as a rising star. Ron's teaming with co-founder Rexy Dorado, formerly of Kumu, reinforced the platform's potential to replicate its success. Jeremy and Ron also talks about the grief of losing his co-founder in 2023, managing platform risks with Spotify, and his plans to scale Serye FM from the Philippines to the U.S. === Watch, listen or read the full insight at www.bravesea.com/blog/ ph-founder-podcast-lesson Nonton, dengar atau baca wawasan lengkapnya di www.bravesea.com/blog/ ph-founder-podcast-lesson 观看、收听或阅读全文,请访问 www.bravesea.com/blog/ ph-founder-podcast-lesson Xem, nghe hoặc đọc toàn bộ thông tin chi tiết tại www.bravesea.com/blog/ ph-founder-podcast-lesson Get transcripts, startup resources & community discussions at www.bravesea.com WhatsApp: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VakR55X6BIElUEvkN02e TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jeremyau Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeremyauz Twitter: https://twitter.com/jeremyau LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/bravesea Spotify English: https://open.spotify.com/show/4TnqkaWpTT181lMA8xNu0T Bahasa Indonesia: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Vs8t6qPo0eFb4o6zOmiVZ Chinese: https://open.spotify.com/show/20AGbzHhzFDWyRTbHTVDJR Vietnamese: https://open.spotify.com/show/0yqd3Jj0I19NhN0h8lWrK1 YouTube English: https://www.youtube.com/@JeremyAu?sub_confirmation=1 Apple Podcast English: https://podcasts.apple.com/sg/podcast/brave-southeast-asia-tech-singapore-indonesia-vietnam/id1506890464

In today's episode, we had the privilege of interviewing Deannah who shares her journey through three unique birth experiences. Deannah's first two births were within the MGP program, where she faced challenges such as unwanted interventions and unfamiliar midwives during the birth of her first baby. She discusses how she realised she suffered from postnatal depression (PND), postnatal anxiety (PNA), and postpartum rage (PPR)following her first birth. In her second pregnancy, Deannah took a proactive approach by researching and securing the support of a known midwife who respected her wishes for a hands-off approach during labour, despite experiencing a postpartum haemorrhage. Upon relocating to NSW, Deannah encountered limited options for care models due to her location, prompting her to carefully consider her choice of care provider, especially given her higher risk of postpartum haemorrhage. Ultimately, Deannah opted for a private midwife for her third birth, which took place at home. The skilled midwife's expertise proved invaluable as she effectively managed Deannah's postpartum haemorrhage in the comfort of her own home. The Local Media Association (LMA) and the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association (PNA) have united to establish the Pennsylvania Fundraising Lab. This groundbreaking venture is designed to empower Pennsylvania news organizations with the expertise and understanding needed to secure philanthropic funding for their reporting projects , thereby enhancing their financial sustainability and enabling them to continue delivering high-quality journalism.   In a recent episode of 'E&P Reports,' Frank Mungeam, LMA chief innovation officer, and Bill Cotter, PNA president, shared the success story of the LMA's Lab for Journalism Funding. With over $23 million raised for journalism funding through the national lab, the decision to expand to a state-level initiative in Pennsylvania was a logical progression. The Pennsylvania Fundraising Lab will operate within a six-month ‘cohort learning format,' offering participating newsrooms the opportunity to learn from philanthropic fundraising experts, share best practices, and receive guidance from experienced mentors. Bill Cotter emphasized the importance of strong leadership and community-focused projects in driving the success of the Fundraising Lab. "Newsroom leaders play a critical role in championing fundraising efforts and ensuring that selected projects address local community needs," stated Cotter. “This lab encourages proactive, solutions-oriented journalism that makes a tangible impact on communities, fostering support and engagement from local audiences.'" The Pennsylvania cohort will be led by Liz White, a former newspaper owner/publisher and an LMA Advanced Fundraising Lab graduate. LMA staff and a team of coaches will also provide one-on-one support to the participating newsrooms.  In a recent statement, the PNA explained that preference for participation will be given to media organizations that: Have solid local leadership and deep ties to the community. Are focused on high-quality local journalism. Have leadership-level buy-in to participate in this lab and make the time/resource commitment. Value staff and leadership diversity. The statement went on to say that each publisher in the cohort will set a fundraising goal, in consultation with the coaches, that aligns with that publisher's market size. Participating publishers will also attend the LMA Fest in September and meet with funders and other fundraising lab participants. Case studies and an industry playbook will be published, sharing best practices and lessons learned. During the E&P interview, Cotter shared the Lenfest Institute's involvement in the project, stating: “They will play a crucial role by providing programmatic support, guest speakers and case studies to enrich the learning experience for participants,” Cotter went on to highlight the Institute's expertise in assisting news enterprises with fundraising through the Lenfest News Philanthropy Network and its focus on digital transformation for historically print news organizations through the Lenfest Beyond Print program. Cotter said, “This collaboration underscores the commitment of all stakeholders involved to equip Pennsylvania news organizations with the resources and knowledge necessary to navigate the evolving media landscape effectively.” To offer additional support, the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association will also award participating Lab newsrooms three $20,000 grants at their 100th Anniversary Gala.

Taking a wandering migratory path starting on the Texas Gulf Coast, Bubba made his way to fisheries conservation and management via the U.S. Navy and Alaska. He also served in the Peace Corps in the South Pacific Islands before making his way to New Zealand to focus on Pacific tuna. Tuna are some of the fastest and most valuable fish in the sea. While bluefin tuna can command hundreds of thousands of dollars at auctions, other species are canned for the $257B global seafood trade, or brought to shore to support local businesses and communities. A tuna swims thousands of miles in its lifetime, crossing national borders and ocean ecosystems. Tracking tuna and the people who fish over this vast area is a job for technology, and Bubba talks about his work making tech tools accessible to fishers at all levels to help keep the industry accountable and sustainable. Hello beautiful podcast listeners and welcome to this week's episode. In today's conversation I speak with Alison, about her experience developing postnatal depression and anxiety after the birth of her first daughter. Alison was left recovering from her birth with undiagnosed and severely low iron levels. Couple that with a baby who would only sleep whilst being held, sleep deprivation and feeling like she could not talk about how hard things were getting, Alison's PND and PNA symptoms worsened and she was admitted to an inpatient early parenting unit. 3 years on and Alison has learnt to prioritise her self care, plan things in the diary to look forward to and is grateful for the small things in life. I loved recording this episode, and I hope you enjoy listening too. In this episode I share my two postpartum experiences, each very different. I chat about entering the unknown, motherhood! I share my very first experience from those very early days which were just shocked the shit out of me (no preparation!), being diagnosed with hypothyroidism at 4 months postpartum to pregnancy after loss when Oliver was 12 months old. I then share my second story which was amazing in parts but also blighted with crippling anxiety which was later diagnosed as PNA. I reckon I suffered from PNA with Oliver too but just wasn't aware. I sought help and can honesty say it was one of the kindest things I did for myself, I put myself first and as a result I have gained so much.I then share my constant struggle with deciding to stay as a family of four. I'm super honest here as it's still very raw and hard to process although not as hard as it was. I know many of you are currently at the same phase of life deciding whether or not to close the chapter on pregnancy and adding to your family for a number of reasons, for me it has been the most challenging season yet. The Balut Kiki Project: Uniquely Pinoy. Unapologetically Queer.

Bayani. Hero. Martyr. Immortal. Nurse lang ang sakalam. (Hindi nga?!)Geoff goes in-depth with former colleague, national nurse licensure reviewer and nurse-educator Ryan Dizon Reyes of Quezon Province about the Filipino's seeming perennial ambivalence towards nurses and the nursing profession. Once regarded as the unsung heroes of an ailing Philippine health care system, nurses have been thrust into the frontlines in the war against an unforeseen pandemic, and now ostensibly forgotten with little help and recognition in sight. Galaw-galaw, mga ka-duty! Kaya pa ba? Due to length and breadth, this is the first installment of the discussion on this topic.Disclaimers: This project was recorded during the 2nd quarter of 2021.
